They came door to door. It is part of their curriculum on their college. We thought, well, we'll give the kids a chance. They were supposed to originally have come out in July. They were late coming to the job. We just have a flat level, little two bedroom house. They did do a fairly decent job and they did have to do some prep work and the prep work was good. I can't think of anything that was outstanding. It was the average paint job that they did but it was all the other stuff wrapped around it. They just were very annoying. They never communicated with you. You had to call 14 people to track them down to get an answer as to when they would come in. One guy walked out with the hardware in his pocket. The other guy fell off the ladder and into my beautiful big tree I had out here by the front door. Then we had to go around ourselves and remove tape that was still on heater ducts and things on the house and still had to pick up a couple of pieces of trash and stuff which I would have thought they would have cleaned up themselves. It was a good price and we got 3 estimates. I wouldn't recommend them.

They did a pretty good job. They get students in the summer and use them for the work. We had to remind them a few times about caulking but the coverage looks good. It was a reasonable price for 3200 sq feet.

My house was in need of painting with numerous examples of peeling paint, etc. When I was about ready to look for a painting contractor I was approached by someone from Student Painters who was going door to door this past Spring. Having been aware of the company for years and knowing someone who had a good experience with them I naively thought I could save some money by using them rather than researching companies here as I should have. Based on the work to be done, the price was good, and the process started out fairly well but quickly went downhill. There were some problems with paint overspray on windows, doors, etc, but the real problem was the unprofessional way they carried out their work. From the time they started painting it took them a full month to get done. During that time there were days where perhaps one student would show up for a couple hours and then leave. The project went on seemingly endlessly. Originally I was told the whole process would take five painting days. As they kept missing dates I kept being told they would finish that day, or perhaps the next, only to again find no one showing up to paint for more than a couple hours and little to show for their efforts. They missed a lot of loose paint or painted areas the siding color rather than the trim color (or vice versa) requiring rework when I pointed out the problem. By the time the work was finally finished, it came out relatively well, but the process of getting there was frustrating to say the least.. Definitely not something I want to ever repeat.

We highly recommend them. The work is all done by locals. They did an excellent job of painting an old lead painted house. They had to do all the scraping and sanding in suits and masks. It is just smooth as glass now and did an excellent job. They were efficient, prompt, and clean. They cleaned up after themselves everyday.

I used Sherwin-Williams paints. Their color consultant came and helped me decide what color was the best on my house. It was really a cool thing. I thought they were fantastic. This is a group of college students doing business major. They have to be hired or given a contract. They are absolutely fantastic. I would use them again.

They hire students. The experience was horrible. If they had done it right, the price would have been fair but they didn't do what they said they were going to do. They did a lot of over spray. I still have one truck that the over spray hasn't been cleaned off of it. They got paint on my lawn furniture and my deck. It was horrible. I called them back on something and they argued about it. I would never use them again.

They were terrible and I'm still trying to clean up the mess. This will be the third summer since they painted my house and I have since been scraping and redoing ever since, trying to get rid of the mess. They got white paint on my new grey roof which I can do nothing about. They even did borrow paintbrushes from me. I should've fired them the first day but the stupid me, continued with them. They just painted the trim, I have permanent sighting and they painted the end gables from the trim, around the windows. They didn’t put back the shutters up properly. They were terrible and I wouldn't let them anymore in my property again. I would never use them again in the future.

The work was okay but I was kind of disappointed. I wanted them to focus on just the south side of the house which was kind of in bad shape and they did go through with it. The salesman and the guy who led the team were energetic and wanted to please but one of the helpers dumped paint in front of the garden areas. One of the helpers kicked a paint bucket down the stairs and it splattered on my daughter's pants. The leader admitted that he discharged the guy after he found out about the incident. I kind of felt bad for the guy who was the leader because I just think that he had bad members of the crew. He was a student painter and was from U-DUB where I went to school, and I decided to give him a hand since he was working and going to school. The price was fine and so was the quality. The guy was quite responsive, and he tried and worked real hard. I would probably shop around in the future.

Buyer Beware!! My husband paid this company $230 on March 21, 2010. At the end of August, Brad left me a note stating he was trying to contact us. He said he wanted to come out the next day when I spoke with him that evening. This was less than 18 hours of notice, and was not convenient for me. On September 2, he agree we only owed $228 dollars for the work when it was completed and he let me know he would contact someone to do the work. Brad contacted me the next day and said Nathaniel would do the work on the following Saturday. Nathaniel called a half hour after his scheduled time and said he did not have a running car to make it up our road. I wondered how he could carry a ladder to finish our job and why did they send someone out with a poorly running vehicle. On 9/7, I called their "877 number" and this is a dispatch number. I requested twice that day to obtain a refund. Both times, they stated someone would call me. I also called Brad twice that day and was disconnected on both calls. I have not heard any additional information from Brad or the service and it has been over 5 days. Although Brad was a good salesman of the service, I am highly upset I am still waiting on a refund. I do not like this company avoiding my calls. I would absolutely not recommend this company.

Before you hire Student Painters, ask yourself this question: Why would I hire a group of seasonal amateur painters to paint my house when I can hire a professional? It has been a nightmare working with Student Painters. To say that we regret hiring them is an understatement. Let me enumerate the issues: 1) Our student project manager was replaced by another student prior to the initiation of the painting job as he had to go back to college 2) The replacement student manager brought us the wrong paint color and insisted that it was the one we had chosen. We compromised and went with a color they offered instead of another color that was not within Sherwin Williams repertoire of colors, even though we were promised that they would match the original chosen color. 3) Inadequate/nonexistent prep work prior to putting on the first coat of paint - they went back and putted nail holes, knot holes, etc after we complained about it (we have picture evidence of this). 4) Did not cover our gutters/downspout - this should have been standard practice before spraying our siding; instead, there was overspray all over the place (again, we have photos to prove this) 5) Painted our downspout the same color as our siding - again a mistake on their part as this was not per our contractual agreement. When I complained to the student project manager I was told that I was "rude." 6) Took down our downspout to correct mistakes #4 and #5 above without asking for our permission, thereby voiding the warranty on a new gutter system we had just installed a few months ago. When we complained and pointed out that we should have been informed and our permission obtained prior to taking down our downspouts, we were told that they did not need to inform us nor obtain our consent to disassemble downspouts and that this is their standard of practice. 7) Our small wooden landing outside our basement family room was damaged by the crew of Student Painters. Whoever did it did not inform us of the damage, and left it for us to discover and point out. Granted there was pre-existing dry rot in one of the supporting beam, nevertheless a crew member supplied the necessary force to fracture the beam. When confronted with this issue, the student project manager told us that Student Painters would assume no liability for the damage nor offer any reparations. No apologies for breaking our deck or for not informing us of the damage. 8) Lack of continuity among the crew members - we often saw new faces on the job; often students showed up for one day and were never seen again; I believe this contributes to poor workmanship, lack of pride in the work, cutting corners, and careless mistakes. See also #1 above. 9) Unprofessional behavior - the kids were sometimes rude, appeared unmotivated, did not clean up job site adequately at end of each work day, left food bits/water bottles on our property. One day, a student painter discovered a wasp nest on under the eaves and refused to paint any further. He communicated this problem to us via a text message which we never received. 10) Poor communication and customer relations skills on the part of the student project managers and painters - we were not properly informed about what needed to be done to accomplish the job, what their standard of practice is, what to expect, etc and when we tried to bring up these issues with them we were met with denial and disrespect. One day, a student painter discovered a wasp nest on under the eaves and refused to paint any further and left the job site. He communicated this problem to us via a text message which we never received. We were in the house and all he had to do was knock on the door to tell us about it or give us a call. Our replacement project manager was a foreign student with poor language and customer relations skills. We really tried hard to work with her but felt we weren't getting the customer care we needed and deserved. 11) Failure to complete the project within the allotted time - we were told the job would take one week to finish. Instead it dragged on for over two weeks. We were told that our job was a priority to them. Instead, there were several sunny days when the painters failed to show up; when there was the slightest bit of rain we were told they couldn't come due to a strict policy on their part. However, on the day the student project manager really had to finish the job and meet her deadline, it was drizzling and they went ahead and did touch ups and detail work. At no point during the entire project did we meet or talked to anybody older than 22 years old. It dawned on us that we were essentially dealing with a bunch of irresponsible college kids. Needless to say our trust and confidence in the crew and the project managers were completely shattered. We contemplated pulling out before the job was done but Student Painters requires a 25% down payment prior to work initiation and it would have been too much hassle to do so (perhaps this is the reason why they require the down payment, to prevent people from pulling out when they discover the level of incompetence in the crew). If you are considering Student Painters for your house painting needs, my honest opinion is that you may want to weigh the value proposition carefully. They may be cheaper than professional painters, but the lack of quality in their work more than offsets the savings.

Response from Student Painters.net
As the General Manager for the Greater Eastside I feel responsible for replying to these claims to give them some perspective. I actually met The Member several times in person and each time walked away feeling like all parties were on the same page and while I am aware that there were some concerns throughout the process, I am quite surprised to see this response. As I reply to these, my point is not to be defensive or reactionary, but rather to supplement The Member’s recounting with some relevant facts. In the end we understand that The Member had a uniquely underwhelming experience with our company and again apologize for the turbulence she encountered. A few Branch Managers leave our program early (before the end of the summer) every year for various reasons; a sudden need to take summer classes to graduate on time, family emergencies, etc. In every instance the General Manager (in this case, myself) makes a personal phone call to the client (often the exiting Branch Manager does as well) to inform them of the situation and introduce them to the closest Manager in the area. The contract remains valid and the same work that was promised previously is honored and completed for the same price with the new Manager. Other than not having more interaction with the original Manager, the only thing that can change is a potential start date for the work. We do match colors outside of the Sherwin Williams color repertoire all the time, and unless the sample given to the original manager was the only sample available, I’m not sure why matching would’ve been an issue. With regards to the comments about prep work, this was something that I specifically came to the job site in person to address. I was/am in agreement with The Member that the prep work was not up to our standards and quite honestly, that’s a main purpose for my role in the company. All prep work was completed before the latter of a two-coat finish was applied as well, and had I seen the incomplete areas on my visit (projects are visited by executives to ensure quality) I would have had them finished properly as they ended up being. A miscommunication between the branch manager and crew also led to the assumption that the gutters were to be painted, as they usually are in residential repaint projects, when in fact they were not. Fortunately they were to remain white, and were painted to eliminate the overspray issue. These were the only things to get overspray on them, a clear sign that it was not a lack of skill on the painters’ part, but a miscommunication between the manager and the crew. I’m a bit confused about the reference to being ‘told that we did not need to inform’ the client of disassembling downspouts because I was the actual person having the conversation with The Member. The conversation took place when I answered my personal cell phone at 10:30pm on a Saturday evening and after explaining that we remove and replace downspouts frequently to ensure paint coverage behind them, we’ve still never come across an instance where we’ve voided a warranty on their functionality. This was not a comment made with contempt at all, merely informing her of why we were not on the same page. The downspouts were replaced properly and immediately and I never heard anything else about the issue. I also made a personal visit to the residence to inspect the wooden landing (about 10 square feet) damage and found extreme dry rot on all support beams. Pieces were literally falling off with the slightest touch and it was honestly a surprise that the structure hadn’t fallen on its own. The Member and her husband informed me that they never used the landing as it was in a rarely trafficked area, which certainly makes sense. I informed them that we were not responsible for the dry rot, obviously, but more importantly that we were not liable for something that would’ve broken at its next use, and we just happened to be that person. No contractor or company would offer to repair or reimburse a client for something that was damaged before they arrived. Again, I do not have the intention of claiming falsities, but as stated, no one actually saw an employee of Student Painters break the structure. As a project in the latter half of the summer, the company often sees an influx into our workforce due to students who operate on a semester schedule at school leaving in late July/early August have to be replaced. We also encourage employees not to attempt to remove wasp or bee nests themselves and to use proper tools, often an exterminating substance and extended object to dislodge the obstruction. If an employee didn’t have the necessary tools around, we’re glad they didn’t pursue its removal from a high place on an uneven surface. Communication is something we take pride in, however, and in this case better communication was clearly more appropriate. I would be the first person to acknowledge that the process of The Member’s paint job took longer than anticipated and promised. While we are a company with a strong culture of not tolerating excuses, I do feel that it is relevant to note that during the first week of the project our student manager was involved in a car accident that resulted in her having a bone fracture in her shoulder. As mentioned, when managers are introducing members to their teams they will always be onsite to ensure all directions and procedures are being followed. In this case our manager was not able to be present for two of the valuable sunny days during the week and as The Member mentioned rain was a constant nuisance. It is company policy not to paint in any sort of rainy conditions as we use latex products and the moisture can compromise the integrity of the paint job, something we are not willing to sacrifice to finish a day or two earlier. It is also important to note that completely covered areas and some prep procedures are permissible in moderate rain, but often managers choose not to create situations where moisture can be absorbed into the woodwork of the homes. Lastly, as I mentioned several times, I made several points of contact with The Member and her husband throughout the 2 weeks we were working on the project both in person, at her dining room table, and over the phone. I am 26 and have been in the company for over 5 years now, leaving me struggling to understand where her claim of “at no point doing the entire project” did she speak to anyone over the age of 22 comes from. While I appreciate The Member’s apparent patience for the duration of the project, I don’t feel that her recounting of the experience was completely adequate or particularly fair to the Branch Manager involved or the company as a whole. For any other questions or concerns Student Painters can be reached at (877) 841-6019 or www.studentpainters.net Thank you.

Overall I am pleased with the finished product. The crew arrived early or on time and worked 8 hours for 5 days in a row!! They cleaned up behind themselves every day. Also, a supervisor came around on a daily basis to check on the crew and with my husband or me. Every service that was listed on the estimate was completed. Our house looks beautiful now. The only repair that was less than expected was the covering of the damage to the L.P. siding after it was pressure washed. In hindsight, we wished we would have had the siding replaced on that side of the house before they painted it.

The initial quality of painting was a B/C, but they DID come back this summer to address some issues - including additional paint touch-ups, and I would call that an A. They had damaged 2 of my new downspouts last summer, and the job manager last year would not take responsibility for that. However, when I filed a complaint through Angie's List earlier this year, they did reimburse me for the downspouts. After attempting to re-paint my front door recently, which had not been prepped or painted properly last year, we agreed to a cash settlement to resolve that issue, and they gave me a check within a few days so that was great. (I'd been sort of wanting to get a new door anyway) I would say to give them a chance and have someone give you an estimate. We dealt with Hannah in the end and she was great - hard working and concerned about quality. I think they could do a fine job for you, but I would recommend monitoring their work as they go along, something I should have been more careful to do.

I just want to thank this member for her candid report. This is a very good repersentation of how this issue arose and was resolved. I am a great proponent of telling it like it is......and I appriciate that she took the time to give an updated Angie's List report. Thank you and to all of our customers who give us feedback via Angie's List and other forums. Sincerely, Jessica Bishop CEO Studentpainters.net

In a nutshell: inefficient, sloppy, and poorly skilled. As far as what I ended up with, I have myself to blame, since I signed for it mistakenly thinking that all problems had been corrected. The bidding process went very well. A cheerful crew manager came to the house along with a regional manager and we had a very good rapport going. Shortly after the house was pressure washed, I received a call from the regional manager telling me that the crew manager who performed the bid had been let go from the company. I probably should have taken this as a sign of things to come, but I happily accepted the situation when I was told that another crew would be filling in to honor the bid. The replacement crew showed up when promised and began their work. I had one early workmanship issue, which was paint overspray on the foundation and crawlspace vents. This concern was sufficiently addressed when I brought it to the attention of the crew manager. Things took a very bad turn when the crew manager informed me that they had run out of paint as a result of the previous manager underestimating and underbidding the job. It quickly became apparent that the crew manager was attempting to buy as little paint as possible to finish the job and protect his margin. After five days of work, the crew manager informed me that they were done. I began walking around the house and was astonished at what I saw, especially when I got to the side of the house where they first started running out of paint. The gun work was so incredibly spotty, I had no choice but to object. The crew manager attempted to attribute this to my paying for only one coat, but this wasn?t about thin coverage, this was about poor workmanship, especially because the coverage was done so much better on the other areas of the house. I went back inside while the crew attempted to improve on what they did. After I came back out for another walk around, I noticed a gutter section on the front of the house that was completely missed. I also began noticing even more missed spots all around the entire house. I told the crew manager that these problems, combined with the quality of the work on the last wall, were completely unacceptable. He then asked me aside to speak privately where he asked that I pay him anyway with the promise that he would return the following day to fix the problems. He also told me that he needed to ?put food on the table and make payroll.? I was completely astounded by this. Granted, he had just spent 12 hours painting my house in the sun, but his personal predicament was not my problem. My only problem was the poor paint job on my house. I stood my ground and told him that while I was sympathetic, I was not paying until the problems were fixed. I went back inside the house. I later phoned the regional manager and left a message informing her of what just happened. The next morning, I walked around the house looking intently and making sketches of each side of the house, noting all the numerous problems. I left these sketches for the crew manager to guide him when he arrives. Later that morning, I received two phone calls, one from the regional manager reassuring their commitment, and the other from the crew manager apologizing for the lack of professionalism. Later that day, the crew manager and an additional worker had just arrived when I got home from work, around 5:30pm. I thought they were getting a late start, given the number of problems that remained to be fixed. They worked quickly, but the situation dissolved into me actually chasing them around the house to tell them what hasn?t been painted yet. We were losing daylight and eventually, I was holding a flashlight for them while they finished off what I thought were the last of the problems. Things remained very cordial between us. Thinking that the issues had been addressed, I signed off on the job and paid the balance. Part of me simply wanted this ordeal to be over with. Little did I know, I would find much more wrong with what they had done. Over the next few days, I noticed several more areas of incomplete base coat coverage, especially on the edges of the trim boards where the ends of the siding pieces b*** into them. Logic dictates that when you are spraying the base color, you should purposely overspray onto the trim boards to ensure complete coverage of the siding and the trim edges. This would then make for a nice, complete finish when the trim work was done. But it seems that in my case, they were almost trying to avoid getting base color on the trim boards altogether, resulting in numerous missed spots on the trim board edges. In addition, the bottom edge of many siding pieces did not receive any paint. There were also a few outside edges of window frames that were unpainted. The final pique came when I got onto the roof and found that they had completely neglected to paint one whole side of the chimney where it faces inward toward the sloping roof of the house. The only place that you can see this area is from the roof, so the crew obviously thought it wasn?t worth their effort, thinking I would never see it. There were other more minor but confounding issues as well, such as the lack of masking over basic things like water spigots and electrical outlet covers. As I said, I have myself to blame for what I ended up with, since I signed off on it as complete, but this experience took far longer than it should have and was most unpleasant toward the end. I could have paid extra for a second coat, but given how poor the workmanship was, I?m not so sure this would have prevented many of the problems I encountered. If there is anything positive I can say about their work, it?s that they did a very good job of cleaning up and being respectful of my property, but that?s pretty much it.
Description of Work: Exterior house paint, including pressure washing, prep, and a single coat of base and trim.

Response from Student Painters.net
As a company we just wanted to acknowledge the experience this member had and both apologize for the aspects of the project that did not fulfill expectations and appreciate the positive reviews on other aspects of the job. We'd also like to state that future clients should not expect these situations in anyway as this one experience is the only instance we've ever heard of in this light. We certainly will be taking this experience into consideration in our training and quality control processes in the spirit of our culture of always improving and putting our customers first. Again, thank you for bringing the behavior of this manager to our attention and we look forward to the opportunity to serve your painting needs in the future.

The original student who gave us the bid left the company before work really began--at first we were concerned that problems would follow in working with a new team leader. Kevin did a great job reassuring us, he paid attention to detail and kept the project on track.
Description of Work: They painted the exterior of our home, including detailed deck work. Student painters power washed, prepped, and painted two coats of paint.

A great experience overall. Taylor came at agreed upon time to provide quote, spent about 1 hr. preparing the quote in detail. Provided an expectations sheet so that we agreed on the work that would be done. Spent a few days coming up with color paint samples to match existing paint and once I agreed to the color, I signed off an agreement to use that particular color. The crew came out to prep the area, power washed and scraped off old paint. Once everything was prepped, painted the townhouse units in 1 day, then came back to take care of any missed spots. When I was satisified with the work, I signed an agreement to that effect and paid for the work completed. Great group to work with, very professional, punctual and always there to answer questions either in person or via phone. I would recommend them very highly.
Description of Work: Painting of 3 level townhouse, front portion area of 2 units. Provided detailed quote of cost of service including prep, painting and expectations. Removed old paint, provided samples for color match to existing paint, painted exterior areas that were agreed upon.

The job took about two weeks from start to finish. Alex McDonald and his crew were hard-working and thorough. If I had any concerns, they took care of them right away. They only painted during dry weather.
Description of Work: Exterior painting. Our house was challenging to paint. It is two stories and on one side is quite high. The house has extensive trim and we also had an arbor painted and a deck re-coated.

The foreman was very professional and very good. His crew was very good and they got the job done in a timely manner. We were in a hurry due to a wedding. They got paint on a brick and I told them about it and they didn't do anything about it.
Description of Work: They painted the eves and the fascia on my house. There were not any other services preformed.
