Response from Shoreline Concrete
[Member Name Removed], When I first read this review I was quite upset. I have policies and procedures in place so things like this do not happen. One of those procedures is a call and email log that is filled out whenever someone calls the office, emails through the website or messages through an internet site. I personally investigated how you seemed to have slipped through the cracks. Here is what I found out: Sat 04/28/18 at 11:03 pm you email through the company website Sat 04/28/18 at 11:00 pm you messaged through Angie's List Mon 04/30/18 at10:40 am I responded to your Angie's List message requesting more information so that Christine could contact you Mon 04/30/18 at 11:24 am You responded with the requested information Mon 04/30/18 at 1:49 pm Christine called you at the phone number you provided and left a message Wed 05/09/18 at 11:03 am Christine attempted to follow up with you again and she also messaged you through Angie's List. At this time she informed you of her work hours Wed 05/09/18 at 3:56 pm you returned her call and left a message. This is because it was after hours Thur 05/10/18 at 9:13 am Christine returned your call. She left a message and in it again included what her work hours are Mon 05/14/18 at 9:31 am left a message on Angie's List stating you hadn't heard back and asked if we were still interested in the job Tue 05/15/18 at 1:36 pm Christine called you, left a message stating that we were interested and again stated what the office hours are 05/15/18 was the last attempt we made to contact you. You never returned the call so we figured you found some one else. Then you post this review stating that we never got back to you. As you can see we attempted multiple times to contact you. The biggest issue I can see in this entire exchange is that you wouldn't contact us during our posted normal business hours. Bruce Bartleson Shoreline Concrete

Bruce from Shoreline Concrete was one of the few people to respond to my request for a quote for a relatively small project. He came out to see the site within a couple of days and gave me a verbal quote that ended up being the minium cost they would charge for any project. It was considerably lower than the other quotes I receieved. The crew that arrived to complete the project was courteous and on-time. They explained each step of the project to me. Throughout the process Bruce was very responsive to my e-mails and answered all of my questions. We are happy with the results and would hire this company again.

Shoreline was great to work with. When I go out for bids, I first judge a company based on their timeliness of response, and the professionalism in which they do so. Shoreline checked the boxes and was friendly and clear about the process. I especially appreciate how they are a multigeneration company in business for over 20 years. That was the final selling point for me, after reading the reviews and seeing the responses showed care, not dismissal when people had issues. They care about their company and the work product they deliver. Because of the season (winter) they were able to get out in short order and complete the job in 2 days. Other bids were 4-5. Good quality, very pleased. The crew was respectful and friendly. Would be happy to use again and recommend to others. My neighbor is now getting a bid as a result.

I was really impressed by Bruce and Keith (finisher and foreman). Bruce rearranged his schedule to give me a bid since we live on the Olympic Peninsula. We had a lot of weather delays due to snow and rain but at the earliest opportunity Keith and his team got the prep and pour done in two work days. It was a technically difficult job with the location of an existing catch basin but the work was done with great attention to detail. In my experience they always kept their word and responded promptly. Their team was fast and clean and the quality of this job raised the appearance of the entire property. If you have to wait a little to get on their schedule there is a good reason for it....they are worth it.
Description of Work: I had broom finish sidewalk poured (matched what was already there so stamping wasn't required on this job) and another area where a sloped asphalt driveway was cut with a channel drain installed.

[Member Name Removed] I am sorry that you feel that we did not give you the attention that we try and give each and everyone that contacts us. I had my office manager investigate why you were not contacted. According to the call log you called on Monday, August 17th at 12:09 pm. On that same day my scheduler returned your call at 1:47 to discuss your project and set up a time for me or my brother to come out. There was no answer so she left a message. You did not return the message so she followed up on Friday at 9:02 am. You never returned our call. Again I am sorry that we did not connect, but we did try and reach you. If you would still like for us to come out and look at your project please call the office at 206-629-5169 or you can email me directly at bruce@slconcrete.net Bruce Bartleson, President Shoreline Concrete

Bruce gave me an estimate in May that was right between two other estimates we obtained. He seemed confident that they could handle the job. Keith came early August to prep the floor and then pour concrete the next day. He and his crew were professional but friendly. It's great to have a new floor in that part of the basement. Thanks guys!
Description of Work: Poured a new concrete floor in our 1916 basement where a 13' x 13' foot section had been removed years ago. The also patched the foundation where previous owners had broken out small sections for the entrance of oil pipes for the boiler.

We had pumper truck supply to backyard. Estimated quantity needed was very good. I had separate smaller area, about 6' x 8' that I included in project, to be used as a foundation for a putting green. Beyond that there was one full wheel-barrow of unused cement after cleaning out pipes run from pumper truck. fortunately I had a place from a different project where we poured that remainder. I would hire this contractor again, but whether it be this one or another I will hope to remember to ask about the disposition of any remainder, especially if I don't have a place to dispose or use. On the bright side, having a little extra is a whole lot better than being a little short. Might not have yielded such a smooth putt.
Description of Work: Expanded patio and hired this company to cement it. It is approximately 25' x 25', maybe a little less. I had prepared ground with mesh and rebar along with forms at boundaries. (Don't recall the exact date of service.)

Bruce was waiting when I arrived home to meet him for the bid. After I explained what I wanted, he was able to give a price right away. His bid was the lowest by a wide margin, but still met every requirement I needed. ALL other contractors were higher to much higher even leaving out cheek walls. I also was clear that I wanted them to work neatly and not leave any mess to cleanup. When work commenced, they covered the lawn, work area, and house walls with plastic and kept their tools on it. They worked carefully and neatly. They cleaned up thoroughly every day before they left. The job site (my front yard) showed no effect from a week of workers tromping around (not including curing time). The work exceeded my expectations; I could not be happier with my choice to go with Shoreline Concrete. I would recommend them without reservation. I would mention that the best way to communicate with them is by email; they always answer the same day or first thing next morning.

They were able to schedule within a week of my call. On the scheduled day, Tim arrived with his team of 3 workers, along with the big Salmon Bay cement mixer truck. The guys trundled wheel-barrow after wheel-barrow full of concrete from the huge truck down about a 50 fool long alley to the site. They worked swiftly, efficiently, as a coordinated team They had arrived at 10:30am. By 10:50 all the concrete had been delivered and Tim was working on smoothing. By 11:30 when I checked, Tim had gone while the concrete "rested". He then was back in the afternoon to do the final surface finishing. I am pleased.
Description of Work: This was an AngiesList coupon deal for concrete patio pouring. A sewerline replacement had required a 20-foot by 4 foot long path cut through my existing patio. When the sewerline project was completed, the sewer contractor had prepared and tamped the gravel bed ready for pouring. The Shoreline Concrete team poured, leveled, and finished the repair in a visually-pleasing manner.

When I arrived home I found that only one of the two support beams had been replaced, there was still about 1-2 feet of rough cut concrete around the garage, concrete rubble was still lying everywhere (it looked like a war zone) and the door to my garage was left wide open. They had already invoiced me, so I called to say there must have been some mistake and that work wasn't complete. Pictures I sent quickly confirmed this. They said they would get out to get the work done and apologized for leaving the door open (literally gaping open, not just unlocked). They confessed they weren't locking the door at night with the key I left them. This was of course concerning for a variety of reasons. I spent a week going back and forth with the company - meeting them at the house 3 additional times - until they finally finished the project to acceptable standards. I will add that they were also very difficult to get ahold of after I had accepted their bid. They were, however, responsive once I told them I was extremely dissatisfied with their work and would not be paying them until it was completed as described. They assured me my experience was not reflective of their usual work and customer experience.

Response from Shoreline Concrete
Thank you for your review. Normally I would use these reviews to better my company. But in this case I want the Angie's List community to know both sides of the story. I first came out to your project and looked at your garage because it was falling over. The garage was in such bad shape it needed to be torn down and rebuilt. The interior was burnt from a fire, the floor was broken in the middle and heaved up, and there was no foundation, just rotten 2x6's on concrete in direct contact with the dirt on the south side and on the north side was in a channel that was used for the rain water. The whole garage was so tilted to one side that the latch on the south side didn't catch. I told you the best way to fix it, Hold up the structure, remove all concrete, fix the subgrade issues and pour in a new foundation and floor. In the process we would have straightened the structure out. You said that that cost to much, so I gave you an alterative of hold the structure, replacing the rotten wood, with pressure treated wood, redirect the water away from the structure and remove the extra dirt that had built up over the years. This is what you wanted. Then you asked me to give you an estimate on placing in a something where the parking area was so that it wouldn't be so muddy. Once again I suggested concrete but once again that was to expensive. So I then said we could place in gravel. Then you asked me to give you an estimate for removing all the concrete in the back and re-grade the back yard. Which I did. A couple of weeks later you called and talked to my assistant and said that you wanted us to do the job. Then you called and changed your mind and said that your landscaper was going to remove the concrete, but you still wanted us to fix the garage. Then you said that we couldn't start until the end of the week of June 19, because the house hasn't closed yet. On June 16th you called and said that the house had closed and that we could start work and the landscaper couldn't haul out the concrete, so we needed to do this also. I couldn't get out there on June 16th. This seemed to upset you, but I was planning on after June 19th. I can't have my crew standing around waiting for you to close on the house, and I have other clients that need work done also. As it was I lost 2 jobs because I slid those jobs until I could get your project completed. One even gave me an "F" on Angie's List. I got a crew out on to your project and it was miserable from the start. But we fixed your garage. We placed in the gravel and redirected the water away from the garage and we removed all the concrete from the back and re-graded the back yard. I allotted 4 days to do this work, but it took almost 2 weeks to complete. Why? Well I will admit that I made some assumptions. I assumed that the concrete was 4" thick, like most residential concrete is. Instead it was 6" to 8" thick. This caused the crew to work 2 extra days and I had to send out 2 more dump truck loads. Normally this would be covered by a change order, but I didn't do that. Another issue was the garage was in worse shape then first thought. I spent an extra day here also. In the end I estimated that your project would be about $7500.00, but it ended up costing me an extra $5,000.00+ to complete. I didn't complain, I just chalked it up as a learning moment. I would now like to address some of the issues that you wrote about. 1, Yes, my field manager didn't lock the garage and in hind sight that was a mistake. But you failed to mention that he moved all your stuff from the garage and placed it in the house and then locked the house up. 2. It is nearly impossible to break the concrete straight when you are demanding that it be removed all the way to the walls of the garage, also that concrete was connected to garage floor. The floor was being adversely affected by us getting that close to the garage. I could have made a clean cut, but you wanted the concrete removed all the way to the walls of the garage. You also fail to mention that we fixed your garage door so that both sides latched. When we left you had a fixed garage, a level backyard with no concrete, and gravel placed in your parking area. I would also like to mention that the gravel wasn't just dumped in. My crew spent extra time to compact the gravel so that it wouldn't be loose. This way it would last longer. In closing here is where I went wrong: 1. I didn't have a contract with you. A contract is supposed to be a meeting of the minds to make sure that everyone is on the same page and that there are no misunderstandings. 2. I didn't collect the customary down payment. By not doing this I felt more pressured to get the project completed. This in turned caused me to allow some steps to be skipped. And finally number 3. Not following my gut by taking the project on in the first place. I had a bad feeling about the whole situation, but I still did the project. As I said before I will use this as a learning experience. Next time I will follow my ALL my policies and procedures to include following my gut.

Shoreline Concrete was able to bid our job quickly. They listened carefully to our requests to ensure the sidewalk drained away from the house and had a rougher finish so that it wouldn't be slippery. The finished result is exactly what we were hoping for. The workers were professional and easy to talk to while the job was underway. There were a few times we expected them to show up on a particular day and they didn't and they didn't communicate with us about the delay. It wasn't a big deal since their work was on the side of our house and didn't impact our daily lives. After the sidewalk was done, Shoreline Concrete protected it with plastic sheeting draped from boards nailed to our house. They said they would come a few days after the concrete was poured to remove the plastic and the frames. They didn't show up for almost a week. My husband finally called them and they said they "forgot" about removing the plastic and frames. Even after they removed them, there was a still a board nailed to our house. Again, not a big deal to remove the board, but I'm a little disappointed at the lack of attention to details.

The estimate didn't go that well. They kept missing the point as to what I wanted. I even supplied pictures. I told them in the beginning that I wanted only the eight treads and risers redone. (two sections) They gave me two bids: one for the treads, risers and sidewalls. The other for the treads, risers, sidewalls and landing strip between the two sections. When I got through to them what I wanted, they gave me a bid for 4 treads and 4 risers. Luckily, I knew exactly what I wanted. They showed up a day late and told me after the fact. Other than that they did a very nice job. I would definitely hire them again. The price was also very reasonable. Again, the guy who did the job did a very nice job.

Shoreline provided excellent service and cost proposal for a very complicated underpinning of existing foundation walls and new concrete foundations for new construction. A phased project that required on time and fast work. Well done Bruce and Keith. The owners appreciate yourexcellent work and pricing. You made me look good. No delays, no added costs. Thanks - we'll work together again. Bob - Project Architect
