We talked of the scope of work before the crew started; my concern was that the tree could not be lightened enough. John and his crew were suitably aggressive with the job, resulting in a better looking front yard, as well as opening more of the front garden that had been choked for sunlight. The rockery looks substantially better as well.
Description of Work: Needed to prune a tree that was overwhelming the front yard, as well as pruning and removal of climbing cotoneaster in the rockery.

Description of Work: The owner visited in November and toured my property while I showed him several projects. I wanted a certified arborist to examine trees and assure me that they could be altered without damage. He prepared a proposal and, because of heavy backlogs [wind, etc.], we set a date for 12/16. His crew of three arrived exactly on time at 8:30 and worked until about 2. They were fun to watch: each had his project, they conferred among each other. Most important, they checked to make sure that the work was to my satisfaction. One of the projects benefited my neighbor's view. He wasn't home, so a crew member and I went up to his deck to check the view. I decided that more limbs had to be taken off, and one of the crew immediately roped up and scurried up the tree. I guided him and his partner, and they completed the job perfectly.

John is a meticulous tree specialist. I have used him before, four years ago, and he is still great. When I called him to prune two large trees for us, he was in the area, and came right over to look at what needed to be done. We looked at and discussed every tree on the property, and he gave his thoughtful advice about all of them. We decided to cut down an additional tree, based on his knowledge of how that tree was likely to grow in the future. Because of my schedule, some of the work needed to be done within a few days, so John sent his crew person to do it, and he did a fine job. For the large holly, though, I wanted John himself to do it, because he is an artful pruner. It took a couple weeks to schedule, partly because of my own constraints, but then he showed up right on time and got right to work. He is excellent at selecting the right limbs to prune, in the right places, such that the tree ends up being a lovely shape from all perspectives, while at the same time making the tree look natural, as though it hasn't been pruned at all. He takes into account the view blocked by the tree, and the privacy afforded by the tree, as he cuts. He welcomed my input into the process, and clearly wanted me to feel satisfied with the finished product. I am really looking forward to working with Renaissance Tree Care again next time I need tree work.

We contacted a few arborists to get tree chips for garden paths. John at Renaissance responded and gave us a large truckload of chip. They showed up on time and conducted themselves professionally. Would certainly consider them for arbor care in future.

He gave me attitude on the phone like he was too busy - too important to perform my job. He didn't show up for the first appointment (forgot), gave me attitude on the phone (until i told him i was an angieslister), showed up for the next appointment - gave me more attitude and a snooty passive agressive demeanor. He was supposed to do the work that day, but said "i don't have time" - too good to do the SIMPLE job I wanted done and then told me it would be 3 weeks to a month to do a job that would take an hour tops. Not only that, he quoted me one price and then when he wrote up the contract wrote it up for even more and didn't even explain why. I had to ask "um, what's up with the different price"? On the very first time I called him and he informed me he needed to be "paid for travel time" i should have just hung up the phone. Thank god I'm not going to use his service. Luckily a local company in my neighborhood quoted me ONE FOURTH of what this guy wanted to charge me to trim 4 branches from a tree, ummm i don't think so.
Description of Work: I didn't spend any money with this guy and never will.

Response from RENAISSANCE TREE CARE
In response to the report from this member: I was contacted by this member and spoke to her at length concerning her trees. She insisted that it was a small job and that I should do the job asap and that maybe it would work to estimate it and then do the work at that time. I tried to inform her that I wouldn’t be able to guarantee that the job would fit into my schedule at this time but that I would have time to do an estimate of the work. She continued to press the urgency of the issue and I agreed to squeeze her into my schedule for the following Wednesday. I set up a time to meet with her at 5:30pm to do the estimate and possibly the work. I regret that I missed the appointment and called her to offer my apologies and reschedule. She agreed to a meeting that Saturday at 8:30am. I don’t normally work on Saturdays. I brought my chipper and was prepared to do the job if the price was agreeable. I showed up at the appointed time and spoke at length about the job which concerned in its entirety the neighbor’s trees. She was concerned with how the trees would be impacted so I was very specific with her and reiterated many points so that there was no confusion as to how the finished job would look and how the trees would respond. I spent a half hour to 45 minutes discussing this. I then verbally quoted a price of $150 but when I wrote out the proposal I realized that the butterfly bush was part of the work and added $37.50. In an industry that requires driving to accomplish its jobs I include drive time into proposals. In Seattle this is approximately half an hour, depending on the distance between jobs. The remainder of the cost involves pruning the tree, taking some direction from the client on how the view is opening up (This always takes more time than I think it will) and hauling brush down steep stairs to the chipper. As to the individual that she contracted to do the work for a quarter of my quote, I have this to say: My company keeps up with the latest research and is licensed, bonded and insured. My hourly rate reflects extensive experience and knowledge. Though Seattle is a large city, the community of quality tree care professionals within Seattle is actually rather small. Most of us know each other. Any company that keeps up with the latest research and is licensed, bonded and insured will have an hourly rate that is competitive with my rates. Also, the neighbor, whose property the trees are on, was not present at the time. She indicated that she had permission from the neighbor to perform the work and she herself, voiced the neighbors’ wishes that the pruning on the apple be minimal but should meet the view objectives. Since the entire scope of the work was on the neighbors’ property, I was concerned that I had not had a conversation with the neighbor nor a written letter giving me permission to do the work or any type of directive from the neighbor concerning their actual desires. I spend the time necessary addressing the clients concerns and firmly believe in giving quality work. I have spent my entire career building a reputation doing this very thing. I regularly go above and beyond what is asked of me on the job. Interestingly, in this economy, my reputation has served me well as I continue to build my client base and receive return customers. I thought they were terrific. They came out really quickly and they worked on it extra time to get the job done. They did a great job cleaning everything up. They came back a few days later to make sure that everything was 0K. I have very high regards for this company.

They did a great job. They arrived on time and were very respectful. The only thing I'd say is that I paid them on the spot then realized I had a coupon. I emailed the owner about it and said he could just refund the amount but I never received the refund.

John came to prune a hemlock tree on my parking strip that is going to be larger than I had anticipated, it needs regular pruning to keep out of the sidewalk. I wanted his opinion about whether to have it taken down entirely. I don't want to have to do that because it blocks my view of a phone pole and traffic. He told that it would be a while before it got tall enough to tangle with the live wire and when that time came, the electric company would lop it themselves. In the meantime he thinned it and trimmed it in such a way that it didn't block parking sign or the sidewalk but looked good, not hacked away. He had originally given me a quote that included the hemlock plus other trees in my yard. A friend came and pruned the other trees so he just did the hemlock. He charged me the same price he quoted me to do all of them, whereas I was a little surprised, I was very happy with the result of his work.

He came out to look at the job and told me what the price would be do to the work. It then took him 3 months to actually get him to come out to do the work. Once his workers were here they didn't do what I wanted and so I was left with branches still hanging over my roof. He never came back out to look at the job his workers did. I tried contacting him after the fact, so he could know it wasn't done right but I was never able to get a hold of him. I ended up just letting it go. I would not use him again.
Description of Work: He trimmed two of my trees. However he didn't take enough off the branches because it was still coming down over my roof.

John came and did an estimate. He was on time, pleasant, knowledgeable, and offered advice and information about all of our trees. His bid was comparable to the other bid we got. We set a date to do the service and he and his crew came on time and did by far the most precise pruning we have ever had done on our hedge, allowing us to see the view from our kitchen window without seeing the house behind us at all. There was no damage to the shrubs underneath, and everything was cleaned up completely. I am so glad we found this company.

Owner worked with his cutting crew and all were professional, safe and prompt. We felt the post stump grinding clean up crew needed more supervision than we wanted to provide. Their bid was not the lowest, but we had bids ranging from $2000 to over $3000 and this company's schedule agreed with ours. I recommend Renaissance without reservation.

THE RENAISSANCE CREW WERE KNOWLEDGEABLE, AND EFFICIENT. THE OWNER IS ON SITE FOR ALL WORK. WE WERE HAVING SOME LIMBS ON OUR CEDAR TREE REMOVED TO IMPROVE THE VIEW OF OUR NEIGHBOR. JOHN, WORKED CLOSELY WITH OUR NEIGHBOR, AND WENT OVER TO HER PROPERTY TO SEE EXACTLY HOW MUCH OF THE LIMBS NEEDED TO BE REMOVED. THEY CHIPPED, AND CLEANED UP ALL THE BRANCHES. THERE WERE 2 AREAS ON THE CAMELLIA THAT I WANTED TRIMMED FURTHER, THEY RETURNED, AND COMPLETED THE WORK WITHOUT ANY EXTRA CHARGE. I AM HAVING HIM COME BACK TO PLANT A DOGWOOD, AND TRIM SOME MORE BRANCHES.
