Our house was built in 1929 and still has the original windows, so Phinney Ridge was very good about following the EPA regulations about lead paint. We took this very seriously because we have a 2-year-old at home. My first contact was with Nick Palladino (owner), who gave me a quote, discussed the lead issue, and seemed very on top of his game. He sent a team out to hand-scrape our windows. He said they had to scrape instead of sand because of the risk of lead dust. I'm glad he told me that because I got quotes from other companies who were more than willing to sand, and had not notified us of the lead risk. The 2 men who came out did just an OK job (forgot to do one window, and left some paint chips around our property). I called Nick that night and expressed my concern. He was very apologetic and he sent his team back out at 8am the very next morning and they did an amazing job, and spent several hours at no extra charge vacuuming up every square inch of my entire property. They apologized profusely, saying it was very windy the day before. We had a separate carpenter come in to put some trim and flashing on our windows and Nick was very good about keeping in touch with me and scheduling his painting team around our carpenters schedule. When we finally had our house painted, Nick sent out his best team and we had Sam and Miguel come to paint our house. They did it in 2.5 days and Sam was very good about doing an extra touch-ups I asked him to do inside and outside of the house. Sam was also a very good communicator about what was and was not possible. I had a pre-conceived notion that the surfaces were going to be pretty smooth for the end product, but Sam explained that since they could not sand the house (had to hand-scrape), they could not get perfectly smooth surfaces. But he was very open to my suggestion of putting down another layer of very thick primer in some places to try to even the bumps and valleys in the wood. In the end it looked a lot better. The one unforeseen hick-up was with the taping. On the outside of our building, when they were scraping the old paint, they taped up plastic to our cedar shingles. When they peeled the tape off, it left a gray gummy mark on many of our shingles. They apologized and said they would paint over it which they did, but the red that they "matched" to our house was hardly a match, and the shingles that they painted came out "orange-red" instead of red. We didn't want to ask them to do it again, so we just got ourselves a small can of new mixed red and are doing it ourselves. As for the taping on the inside of our house, I don't know why they used masking tape instead of painters tape. I guess we should have taken it off after they scraped the house and it wouldn't have left a mark (that's what they told us later), but we figured we'd leave it on until they came back and painted (since they weren't done). But since the tape got left on for 2 weeks, by the time we peeled it off it took quite a bit of paint off our window sills. Sam very graciously touched it up for us, but I wished that they would have told us to take off the tape or it will cause damage to our window sills. When the job was finished, our entire property was vacuumed very thoroughly (as I requested), and they did a fantastic job with getting every last paint chip. All in all, I think Phinney Ridge Painting did a very fine job. There are always hick-ups with every job, and Phinney Ridge was very professional about fixing things and following through. Their communication was prompt and courteous, and Nick and Sam were a pleasure to work with.
Description of Work: We hired Phinney Ridge Painting to do all the windows and trim on the exterior of our house. They did 16 windows, with matching trim around the whole house (exterior), along with the gutters, our back door, and the trim on our garage.

I am very pleased with the paint job and would use this company again and highly recommend them. They did a very thorough job of prepping the house and the painting is meticulous. I have had his house painted on two previous occasions and this job is the best one by far. They did not paint any windows shut and were able to pry open a couple of windows that had been painted shut by a previous painter. They were courteous, communicated well with me, showed up early, worked all day and completed the job in the budgeted time which was about a week for the prep and two weeks for painting. They were tidy enough and cleaned up after themselves when the job was completed. There were no extraneous paint splatters or other damage. The cost was reasonable given the size of the house and the quality of work.
Description of Work: Pressure washed wooden deck and cement walkways that were covered with a lot of moss. Prepped and painted a two story Dutch colonial style house that was built in 1919 and had not been painted for 18 years. The house is on a hillside so one side is very high and requires a 40 foot ladder in order to access the second story for painting and prep. The house has lots of trim.

We hired Phinney Ridge Painting for multiple jobs. First job was painting exterior of 1922 house. They did excellent work and a year later we are still happy with the paint. We like them so well we had them come back to do some custom interior work. We had a vision for an accent wall; they listened and then ran with the concept. It turned out awesome. These guys are knowledgeable and creative - we enthusiastically endorse them! The Christmas lights were a bonus - they had them up in less time than it would have taken me to get the latter hauled to the front of the house. The came back when we asked and took them down too - I will do this again.
I purchased the Big Deal on 1-29-12 for pressure washing and gutter cleaning for $189. I called Nick on 2-7-12 and left a message. No response. I called on 2-8-12 and left another message letting him know this was my second attempt to contact him. He called back later in the evening and I told him what I needed done (pressure wash front driveway and deck and back concrete as well as cleaning the gutters). He told me the pressure washer was in the shop and that should be repaired next week and we'll set something up then. Next week comes and goes and I hear nothing. I call again 2-27-12 since I hadn't heard from him and he hasn't come by the house to do the work. He said the pressure washer is working and he could be out Friday, weather permitting. I told him I'd prefer if someone was here when the work was performed so instead of Friday let's make it Wednesday or Thursday of this week (3-7 or 3-8). He kept going back to Friday but at this point I just wanted the work done, but I made sure to let him know Wed or Thur is preferred. Friday came and went, nothing. Wednesday and Thursday came and went, still nothing. The work was not completed and no response from Nick at all. At this point I was done and contacted Angie's List for a refund. I shouldn't have to chase this guy down to do the work I paid for. I made a good effort to try and set something up but he either didn't show up or just didn't respond.
Description of Work: Would have been for pressure washing and gutter cleaning, per the Angie's List Big Deal.

Response from Phinney Ridge Painting
As illustrated by the customer we had some mechanical issues that had to be resolved. However, the main reason we were not able to handle this work on the exact dates outlined was due to freezing conditions and snow in the area which created difficulty in commuting to jobs (those on the Eastside in particular). These conditions also made it unsafe to be on ladders and roof surfaces which are required to clean gutters and pressure wash houses. Employee safety is an absolute priority. I have tried at all times to do my best to communicate with all of our customers in a timely, responsive manner. We have sold a large number of these deals and managing all of them as well as our regular flow of business can be quite a task. In many cases, I have actually had to chase people down to try and get these Big Deals completed before our peak season begins and the deal expires. All in all, I take full responsibility for letting this customer down. I wish she had called me to convey the urgency with which she wanted this work performed, but in the end it is my job to schedule work and stay on top of our customer's needs. I will not let this happen again.

See comments above. Very satissfied with the job.
Description of Work: Phinney Ridge Painting took care of painting a bathroom and fixing water cracks in and painting the dining room ceiling. The work was excellent, they arrived exactly when they said they would and finished when they said they would. The ceiling crack repair took a number of days. They arrived, did the work and left no mess behind each day. I have worked with Phinney Ridge Painting for years and I will always call them for interrior and exterrior painting work.

Perfect - exceeded my expectations!
Description of Work: Recently, I was tasked with getting a house ready to put on the market and per my realtors advise, needed some interior painting done. Nik returned my call within minutes and made an appointment with me first thing next morning. Nik and Sam were there early for our appointment. Both were very friendly and professional. They were particulary great about listening to my needs and making sure they understood them. They also made several good suggestions that I had not occured to me and had great solutions for a couple problem areas. Nik and Sam gave me a detailed break down of estimated time for each area of the work to be done and the materials needed. The estimate meeting was very positive and comfortable. It had the feeling of a collaboritive discussion. Throughout the project, they both keep me well informed. The work was completed right on target time and money wise and exceeded my expectations quality wise. I was also impressed with their very thorough clean up - literally could not tell that they'd been there, except for the bright new beautiful walls and trim! I manage a couple rental properties and have used other painters before. PRP's bid seemed higher up front, BUT they actually stayed within their bid (!!!) and they are very effecient. I feel that I received an excellent value in a timely professional manner. I highly recommend Phinney Ridge Painting for any interior project.

The estimate was free of cost. They were highly professional, very helpful and very courteous. They were happy to give an estimate and they totally understood even if I found somebody else that I was going to deal with. They were good. I enjoyed talking to them. Some of the companies had different slabs of quality and things like that. It was a little bit different in each case and I can’t remember exactly what each company offered. Phinney Ridge did the needful and I’m happy to go with them. They were very thorough and they seemed to know their business. They suggested things that I hadn’t necessarily thought of in terms of preparations that we’re going to go through and things like that. I liked their professionalism. They seemed to really know what they were doing and I felt like they were giving their best effort. They showed up when they said they were going to. In fact I responded to them as well regarding the estimate. I felt comfortable with what they were doing. I will use their services again in the future.
Description of Work: I got a bid from Phinney Ridge Painting LLC. I did not use their services. They came out around mid September to give me an estimate for exterior painting. I’m having the entire exterior of my house painted.

Nik & Sam and the crew did a great job of prepping the job, getting it painted per the schedule they laid out for me. What I really appreciated was Nik being conscientious enough and hands-on to insist on using high quality products and processes that will ensure a long lasting paint job that looks great. Nik backs up his work with a 7-year warranty that adds another layer of (my) confidence in his work. I would certainly use the guys again, in about 15 years when this one is ready for another coat of paint. Thanks Nik. Mike
Description of Work: Nik power-washed the exterior and scraped as needed. They applied a glue-like primer coat design to bond to the crevices of my combed cedar siding to prevent flaking. They then applied a 30-year Rodda paint that is the highest quality to ensure a long-lasting paint job. They trimmed out the peaks, soffits and gutters, including the garage.

Having painted houses myself on a crew during my college years as well as working as a carpenter for 6 years I've had my fair share of involvement with contractors of all sorts and have to say that from start to finish I was impressed with PRP. The bid / proposal process was about as painless as I could hope for and Nikolas had great suggestions and ideas regarding choices of paint and color. From the moment I met Nikolas I felt comfortable working with him. He never tried to sell me anything I didn't want or need, made suggestions on how I could make reasonable cost savings, and prevented me from spending more than I needed to. With a newborn in the house and my wife at home I initially had concerns about a painting crew being there all day blasting music and hammering on the house, however nothing could have been farther than the reality we experienced. The crew lead, Sam, is an outstanding guy, very easy going and immensely approachable. The whole crew was quiet, respectful and very professional from start to finish. Whatever I asked Sam he nailed it the first time out; I never had to say or ask for anything twice. The whole crew was attentive and professional. In conversations with Nikolas I made it known I was concerned about a specific portion of the house and he had his crew come back and spend an extra day on the prep work. Although the windows and doors were taped up PRP crew kindly removed it without me needing to ask because the days were hot (go figure in Seattle) and Nikolas said he hated leaving customers windows masked off like that. That kind of preemptive 'above and beyond' typifies how PRP approaches their work. These guys are caring, easy going, approachable, professional and everything you would want when hiring a crew to work on your house for days and days while spending large sums of money. If there is a down side I cannot think of it. The communication between myself, Nikolas, and Sam was excellent. Both were reachable via cellphones and whenever I had a question or concern I always had my calls or texts answered very quickly. Although PRP wasn't the cheapest bid I am a firm believer that "cheap is expensive" and feel that given their attention to detail, level of professionalism, and commitment to leaving their customers feeling satisfied I got the better end of the deal. I wouldn't hesitate to hire this crew again and indeed we will be hiring them for interior work this winter. In closing, prior to hiring PRP my wife and I met a former customer while admiring her new paint job. Her experience mirrored ours and was a great comfort in helping us know we made the right decision.
Description of Work: We hired PRP to do a full exterior prep and paint on our 1921 Greenlake craftsman. The existing paint job was done poorly at best and was peeling badly. Additionally there was lead present in the original paint which was a concern for some other contractors (who were probably not lead certified) however not for PRP since Nikolas is lead certified. All windows were caulked with high quality calk, the house hand scraped, and the cleanup was top notch. There was not one spec of paint or paint chips to found anywhere! I was truly amazed at the quality of the cleanup these guys did and the care they took around our expensive vegetation. We elected to reverse the color scheme from a white body and dark trim to darker body and lighter trim. Some other bids I got used that as an excuse to jack the price up however Nikolas didn't even blink when I mentioned that. This was a spray and back roll job and given the horrible condition of the house I am impressed with how good it looks. Neighbors comments are extremely positive and I have been asked by several for a referral.

We first talked to Nic Palladino of Phinney Ridge Painting two years ago when we got several bids on painting just our house trim. Nic was the only bidder who said things didn't look too bad overall and we might want to wait until a later date to paint the entire house since the trim would need to be repainted at that point anyway. We took his advice, saved money that year, and did both house and trim this summer. At every step Nic gave us tons of information and explained all our options in great detail. We wanted a reddish color and he guided us toward shades that would not fade and change in the sun in a couple of years as reds often do. He explained how we could save money by painting the soffits the same color as the siding (we chose not to). We agreed on a plan and a bid and the work proceeded. The team prepped the house by power-washing and scraping flaking paint, taking great care to not leave chips around the yard. The painting of the siding went smoothly and all plants, porches, doors and windows were covered to prevent overspray. They completed the trim with great precision. At the end the house looked beautiful and the premises were thoroughly cleaned up. We paid exactly what we had agreed on (plus a small agreed-upon amount for minor repair of rot they found) and we couldn't be happier with the job. I can't think of anything that could be improved upon. And their work is guaranteed for 7 years!
Description of Work: We hired Phinney Ridge painters to do power washing prep work, painting of our 3-story shingled house in one color, and painting of trim and soffits in a different color.

I am sure that the company wants to do a great job, but I felt that I had to double-check their work and tell them when there were problems. The work seemed a bit sloppy for the price...$3200. The bids had come in at 1100, 2300, 2400 and 9000, so I expected them to be professional enough not to need my involvement. Some examples are that they applied deck paint on a day when rain was expected that night. The paint didn't stick. They then applied it again on a day before the rain, and when I requested that they cover it to protect it from rain, they said that might hinder draying. That coat did dry eventually, but left a patchy look to the finish. I'm quite sure they would have been willing to come apply the third coat for me but I decided it would be best to apply it myself so that I could choose a day when it would be dry enough for the coat to dry evenly. Also, they applied a rubbery calk in a sloppy way so that the place where the dark house paint met the light trim paint was a jagged line. They fixed it, but they didn't even see it until I pointed it out. The color and sheen of the paint they used didn't match the existing paint. The sheen was perhaps an attempt to get better adhesion, so no big deal there, but it would have looked better if it had been a better color-match. They also used a nail gun to nail the siding down...they were convinced (I'm still not totally convinced) that this had to be done for the paint job to last. Unfortunately, the nail-gun couldn't be adjusted light enough not to push the nails pretty far in and split the wood. They did calk the wood, but again, the job was a little sloppy.

It is unfortunate that this customer feels the way she does about the quality of our work and our expertise in this field. I feel that we went above and beyond to save a section of siding on her house that had been improperly installed and improperly coated by another contractor in the past. We used only the best materials and practices and went well above budget to on labor without charging her any addition cost. I even had siding expert and a paint rep come out to meet with her and verify that what we were doing was in fact the most effective way to ensure the integrity of her siding. The reputation we have built in Seattle through word of mouth is our most important source of new clients. I am truly disappinted that our efforts and the final product did not satisfy this customer. We are a very small company and we strive to make sure that all of our customers are not only happy but excited about recommending us to their friends and neighbors.

Phinney Ridge did an excellent job. They gave me a well-explained bid, with several options depending on what I wanted included in the work. They arrived on time each day and always cleaned up before they left. The owner was willing and able to consult on trim color, making a suggestion that worked out really well. I'm happy with the result.

Nick has detailed metrics on how much it costs to do each part of the house. He ws able to decompose the work to be done and offer us options. We felt we really had communciated what we needed. Nick's final bill for the job was exactly what he had bid. He is honest, and really wants the customer to understand what they ae buying and be abel to make a knowledgeable decision. They were so fast, the whole job was done in lest than 10 days. They had to trim shrubs to get to some of the parts of the house. They worked with me and did not butcher my plants. this team really cares about the customer. The entire team is professional!!! Everyone in the neighborhood remarked on how nice it looks. We are a high traffic walking area, and the walkers even commented. This house looks better than it has in 20 years. They are our go to guys for paint.
Description of Work: Exterior Painting of 1922 craftman, two colors. House had multiple challenges, peeling paint, warping shingles and poor quality paint job from 5 years ago and lots of lead in the paint. Nick and his team bid a very competative bid that included lead abatement, and fixing damage from the pressure washing of a previous painter. the team scraped, power washed, rinsed, applied peel stop and primer. applied multiple coats, fixed windows. Nick really knows his techinical stuff about old houses. He knew how to fix our paint problems and could explain them to us. OH MY! so much work. Two tone paint job, hand brushed the trim. White over blue, multiple coats. So beautiful. This January we invited Nick and his team back to do some touch up around the interior. Sam is wicked fast, and so tidy, he got more done in a day than I could have on a 3 day weekend.

Everything went extremely well. The house and fencing look beautiful. I felt that Nick, the owner, was exceptionally knowledgeable and expert on all of the various issues of house painting. This was the lowest bid of four. Nick was helpful with color choices and the work was done quickly, especially given that they had to work around some rainy weather. The painters were polite and friendly while doing their work. All of the work and clean-up was done to my complete satisfaction.
Description of Work: Painted the exterior of my house, carport, and out building and stained wood lattice-style fencing/trim.

Overall it went extremely well. Nick and his assistant, Sam, made a task that we had been dreading easy. From start to finish Nick and Sam were professional, friendly, helpful, and thorough. Estimate was right on the money - $4000 for labor and $1000 for high end Benjamin Moore paint at our request. Wall preparations, protection of furniture, attention to detail (including removing all outlet plates, behind the refrigerator, ceiling fixtures, protecting a large art installation that could not be removed from the wall, and sanding), and the paint job itself were all done beautifully and on time. Initial preparations were made on a Thursday and the painting was completed in four days - Monday - Thursday of the next week.
Description of Work: Prepped and repaired damaged walls, popped nails, bulging beams, etc. and painted three story stairwell, dining room, living room, family room, kitchen, hallways, powder room, all ceilings and entry way.
