I contacted Glenn several weeks ago for an estimate. He was punctual and very helpful. The estimate came in ~$500 less than the other contractors I contacted. Larry and his assistant arrived bright and early on the scheduled day and worked without any major breaks until the job was done. They were very professional and efficient, and the work is very neat and good-looking. Larry coordinated with Seattle City Light and came back the morning they installed the new meter to do final connections, which again was professional and efficient. I would definitely hire this firm again. Excellent job!

For the most part they did a good job; the price was as expected, the quality of the work was good. But they did do a few things which were not good. When replacing the fuse box and meter base they really messed up where the service went through the wall. They were willing to take it back out and do it properly but by that time I had a work-around so didn't want to redo it. They also put an awful lot of holes in my walls looking for places to put outlets.
Description of Work: I had service upgraded from old fuse box to 200 amp. breaker box with new mast and meter. I had about a dozen outlets with new circuits added.

In spite of starting on the hottest day of the year, had attic wiring, including new master bedroom fan (!), operating on first day. Work areas were cleaned each day, and all electrical devices were able to be used each night. There were no surprises. Many small (1/8") holes in plaster and a few 4" diameter holes in walls left for us to have repaired. These were discussed in advance. Finished project in 2 weeks. Code inspection went smoothly with no issues. Communication with the project lead was successful. We discussed at the end of each day what would the next day's project so we were able to be prepared. Questions and concerns were addressed in a timely manner. We were very pleased with the work and would not hesitate to hire this company again in the future.
Description of Work: Total rewire of 1928 house. Replaced and upgraded main panel, replaced all wire, outlets, and switches. Added new circuits with outlets and switches, installed new owner provided fixtures, including new ceiling fans, added smoke/CO detectors.

Glenn came over to give an estimate. He immediately figured out several issues which took much longer for other estimators to figure out. After obtaining 4 estimates, Kemly's was the cheapest, and based on Glenn's expert estimate, I felt they would do the best job. Two electricians came out the day before Christmas and under Glenn's guidance. They charged us the amount of the bid, which included the permit and tax, but did not include the new wire from the street (which we paid for separately to the utility company). They gave us updates on their progress, and told us when and how long the electricity would need to be turned off. The final product was exactly what they told us it would be, so we were very happy with their work.
Description of Work: Installed new service, meter, and electrical panel, upgrading to 200 amps. Turned old panel into a junction box, and removed unnecessary sub-panel. Added required grounding. Obtained permits for work, as well as ordered new service from electrical provider.

They were very rushed. It ended up being sloppy in the end. I think they probably did a good job. Everything was so badly labeled that I couldn't tell what anything was. I had to go back in and completely label everything. That should have been done as part of the service, especially for the amount of money that I had to pay. I was kind of upset about that. I haven't done this a lot, so I don't know if most electricians rush, or if it was just them. I would use them again with more clarification upfront. I would ask different things upfront. I would be more of a stickler.

We heard a crackling noise when our dishwasher was running, under the sink where the dishwasher is wired in to the electrical connection. I called Kemly Electric and they were able to come out that same day. Larry did the work and was very professional and polite. He explained what the problem was (a bad wirenut, the plastic had actually melted from the bad connection) and showed me what he was doing to fix it (put on a new, better quality wirenut). It was a huge relief to have it fixed the same day, and the job took less than half an hour. Larry and the person I talked to on the phone were very pleasant and polite. I would definitely call them again for electrical work.

Jeff from Kemly called to inform me he was running ahead of schedule. He was able to move the electrical box in the ceiling over about a foot, without cracking the lathe and plaster. He installed the new light with precision and made sure it was level and straight. He checked with me several times during installation to make sure I was happy with the end result. He was able to do all this without spreading dust and plaster all over the room. I would recommend them to anyone and I will use them again. The entire process from start to finish was 2 1/2 hours.

I felt comfortable hiring these guys, but just had a slight preference for another company. The only concern I had was that the estimator didn't have a ladder or flashlight with him when he came, so he had to borrow mine to look up in the attic. But, the 3rd estimate I got didn't even look, so maybe that wasn't such an issue. I got a detailed walk-through and a detailed list of changes with a bottom line price that came 2-3 business days later. All in all, it was a good experience. They seem like a good company to work with. I just didn't choose them since I want to do a partial upgrade (attic only) instead of a full one (attic + walls) and their belief is that all of knob & tube should be replaced.

They came highly recommended but I was not happy with them. The first 2 guys who came in and looked around for an hour and did not know what it was. They could not fix it but they could send a guy around to give me a bid on what it would cost to fix. They sent me a big bill for the guy who could not even fix the problem for me. They were not even willing to listen to my complaints and their service was very unsatisfactory.

Response from KEMLY ELECTRIC INC
This negative review comes as a surprise to us as the work was preformed over nine months ago. Our Electrician went out to trouble shoot the wring problems that they were having in the home and concluded that some over loaded Knob and tube wiring had failed. As the scope the project seamed to be to large of an undertaking for a service call, we sent out an estimator to give them a free estimate on the cost to rewire their home. The management at Kemly Electric was unaware there was a satisfaction issue on this project until the review was posted.

Overall, very responsive and professional.
Description of Work: I had a short somewhere and couldn't figure out where. Two technicians showed up on schedule and quickly diagnosed and fixed the problem, some faulty wiring in a light fixture. Within 30 minutes, the short had been fixed and I had electricity to the bathroom and master bedroom restored. Even though 2 technicians were present, they only charged me for one.

With this job, there was something that went wrong. It is pretty easy to do a job right the first time and in this case they did make some mistakes and they were quick to admit it. Not only did they come back to fix it, but they actually came back the following day earlier than they would normally start to accommodate my work schedule, so I did not have to miss any work. They definitely accommodated the customer and he has told me he will pay for the repairs that were due to his folks making a mistake, so I think that is admirable. They stuck with it and did not walk away from it.

The thermostat was stuck in the full 'on' position so that the heater was blasting out heat and could not be turned off. This occurred when the daytime temperature was over 80 degrees. I called Kemly because the company is highly rated on Angie's List and is close to my residence in Ballard. I requested immediate assistance and Kemly dispatched an electrician to my house within an hour. The electrician quickly determined that the 20 year old thermostat was broken and replaced it, solving the problem. I am very satisfied with the speed and efficiency with which Kemly Electric addressed my problem.

I had lost power unexpectedly to only part of my house. It was a mystery to me why. I had a full work schedule and there was time pressure as my refrigerator was without power. Kemly responded in a flexible and timely manner. I wasn't able to be there but my teenage son was. James, the electrician who came, figured out what was wrong, added a new strikeplate in a location which would avoid a repetition of the problem, and called City Light to hook up a new line to the house. Unfortunately, they came while I was not there, my son did not pay attention, and the City Light crew hooked up the new line to the old strikeplate, even though the new one was right next to it, and obviously new. I don't know if the communicating was insufficient between James and City Light, or that City Light was just asleep at the wheel. My guess is the latter. (I now have electricity, but am still, 2 1/2 weeks later, waiting for City Light to come back and connect the line to the new strike plate.)

James was very professional in every way--knowledgeable, very efficient, made helpful suggestions, corrected mistakes of past electricians, perfectly friendly but didn't waste any time. We were very appreciative of his skillful service. We decided midway to enlarge the scope of the job to include most of the switches and outlets since he was able to take care of them so efficiently (we supplied the materials and had the face plates already removed, then replaced them when he was done, thus making the job a bit more economical). We were very happy with the service we received. This was the third time we used this company.
Description of Work: James replaced two thermostats; disconnected the electricity to the hot tub; removed a transformer; brought power to a two-gang switch box for proper three-way of dining room (involved cutting out and renailing a couple feet of wallboard): and replaced most of the switches and outlets through the (3-story) house.

I called up Kemly Electric and had one of their estimators come out to estimate my project. I had several other electrical estimates done over the same period. Kemlys was the most expensive. I had another electrical company, Tim (I removed Tim?s company name so it doesn?t cause confusion) come out and also give me a bid. Tim came out after Kemly. Tim asked me what other bids I had and asked me what my budget was, and I told him about several other bids I had [totals, not details] including Kemly?s estimate. I want to be clear that I did *not * show him Kemly?s bid. I didn?t have a printout of the bid from Kemly. I did show him the bid that I got from another electrical service provider, which was significantly lower than Kemlys, and said that was the budget I was working within. The next day [March 4th 2009] my wife got a call from Glenn (from Kemly) who was acting frustrated that we had supposedly shown his bid to another electrician. My wife called me, upset, and I called Glenn back, and explained 1) I in fact did not show the estimate details Kemly gave me to Tim ? I just told Tim the bottom line, 2) Whether I did or did not show Kemly?s estimate to anyone else was none of their business and I was perfectly entitled to do so, and 3) That I didn?t want them calling up in such an unprofessional manner. Glenn told me ?someone who used to work here called up and just did an estimate and had the line by line copy of our estimate?. I told him that wasn?t possible, and couldn?t be true. I asked him if he had seen this ?line by line copy? and he said ?no?. Then I told Glenn that regardless of that, I was well within my rights to show the estimate to anyone I wanted and that we lived in a free market society. Glenn started stuttering and I ended by saying ?Don?t call my house again?. I would NOT use or recommend Kemly, based on their completely unprofessional behavior. As a follow up, I then immediately called Tim. Tim acknowledged he had spoken with Brian from Kemly but that it shouldn?t have been a big deal [just industry colleagues chatting to see if either of them won the deal] and apologized profusely for any angst caused. He was very professional. He completely agreed I was well within my rights to talk about any bid with anyone at any time. He said he?d personally follow up with Brian Kemly . We have hired another company [from Angie?s list] and I?ll submit a report on them once the job is complete.

IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT THEY WERE SO UPSET AND OFFENDED BY OUR FOLLOW UP CALL REGARDING THE PROPOSAL THAT WE PROVIDED TO THEM IN JANUARY. WE GENERALLY SPEND CONSIDERABLE TIME AND EFFORT INTO OUR PROPOSALS FOR OUR PROSPECTIVE CLIENTS. IT WAS SUGGESTED TO BRIAN BY A 3RD PARTY, WHOM WAS ALSO A CONTRACTOR, THAT OUR COMPLETED JOB BREAKDOWN MAY HAVE BEEN USED TO SOLICIT OTHER BIDS. IN OUR FOLLOW UP CALL, GLENN MERELY ASKED IF IN FACT IF THIS WAS THE CASE. THERE WERE NO RUDE OR UNPROFESSIONAL COMMENTS MADE BY GLENN AND WE ARE VERY SORRY IF THEY WERE OFFENDED BY GLENN'S CALL.

I called Kemly Electric and described the work. They gave me an estimate over the phone which saved me time right up front by not having to set up an appointment. The electrician showed up on time and got right to work. He worked very hard for 4 hours and completed the work exactly as I had wanted, well within the estimated time. He even installed a light which I was planning on doing myself. The only negative was that I thought the material price was a little high. I would highly recommend Kemly Electric.
