It went beautifully. Refinishing is not a job that can be turned around in a day, if it's done right, and Gabel's did it right. They finished when they said they would, and we are very happy with the table.
Description of Work: We needed a Danish modern coffee table refinished. Gabel's offer was half the price of a competitor's.

They did an excellent job repairing my dux chair that I had for about 50 years ago. They came to pick it up and they delivered it when it was done. I was very impressed that they where able to fix it, I did not think it could be possible. He told me not to glue it or let anyone else glue it. I would say that I would not hesitate to them anything to fix.

Not the fastest or cheapest but they do great work. Really nice individuals as well.
Description of Work: They took a 1950s side chair with a broken leg and decaying upholstery, fixed it, restained it and upholstered it in leather. I had a wing chair reupholstered and refinished with an ottoman made to match and a Beaux Art settee all redone and am very satisfied.

Very professional and great to work with. They did a beautiful job refinishing the couch and consulted with us on every little detail. They have done some previous refinishing work for us and it has been a great experience every time. They are expensive, but in my view it's worth the extra expense to work with someone you know will do a great job. (note that the cost includes the upholstery fabric, which is also expensive)

Negotiate a total project cost rather than T and M work
Description of Work: My experience was limited to stripping and sanding two small cherry cabinet doors and a small cherry writing board out of a desk set I was refinishing. The people at Gabel's were great. The job was finished quickly. Stripping and sanding these three small pieces at shop rates of $115.00/hour cost $250.00.

When I called Gabel's, Chris called me back immediately. He offered to drop by my house to look at the piece the following day. He showed up on schedule, he examined the sideboard, we discussed the work and agreed on a price, and we loaded it on his truck. He said it would take two or three weeks, and mentioned that he was unsure of the schedule because of an employee's illness. About two weeks later, Chris called and said the wood was all stripped and prepared for staining and reassembly, so I visited the shop and discussed the color with him. The work was finished a week later, and Chris brought it back to my house. The sideboard is beautiful, the color is perfect, and my experience with Gabel's was everything I want when dealing with a service business:* Communication was prompt and clear* The price was fair* The workmanship was excellent* Simple terms, simple logistics, no surprises!* They did all the work (ok, I helped load it on and off the truck, but I didn't have to)
Description of Work: I have a solid maple sideboard that my grandparents purchased in the 1930's. It has been in my garage for the last 15 years or so. It was in good structural condition but looked pretty beat up. Much of the original finish was scratched and worn away and had many water spots and rings. A couple of the joints were loose and separating. Gabel's stripped, repaired and refinished my sideboard.

They are more than willing to work with their clients. Because my sofa is vintage, I needed to figure out whether it was worth saving or not. They advised me that was, and they were very informative and helpful. For example, they stored my sofa for about a year while I decided on fabric. I was very happy with both the quality of their work, and their customer service.

GREAT! as stated Above
Description of Work: I recently moved and a leg on my antique chair broke, and I had an antique/ornate coffee table that was stained by water. I had some major work done a few years back that was done SO SO well, way beyond any expectations. Gabel's was the only people I thought of for this job. Dave responded to my email right away, and as I recalled from the last time was very knowledgeable, responsive and kind. I am disabled, so his partner: Chris of many years, that lives close, came to my house and picked up the pieces. Chris brought them back today and WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The table is even more beautiful then when I bought it. They are real craftsmen. WONDERFUL work and great people to work with!!!!!! I have some more pieces that I thought of that need work, and I know who I will be calling!!

The shop appears to have excellent skill and experience. However I never heard from them after I dropped my lawyer's book shelf off for minor repair. After two months I called and was told they were busy and not able to get to the job. This was fine because I had changed my mind about the repair.

We called them, delivered the dresser and told them what we wanted done. They took care of everything, talking to us several times throughout the process. They sent the mirror out to be re-silvered and that delayed the project for a short time, but was not significant. They delivered the dresser when it was finished.
Description of Work: Refinished and restored a 150 year old dresser. It has been in our family for all that time and was in need of some professional help. They did an excellent job in every respect. There were some repairs that they attended to and they had to fabricate a candle stand, everything was done perfectly. We couldn't be happier. Five years ago they refinished the bed that went with this dresser and it was also done beautifully.

The pride that Gabel's takes in their work was evident in every interaction I had with them. They had me stop in at the shop twice to show me what they had done and to make sure I was happy with the color of the stain. I was fascinated on one of these occasions to watch Chris create a custom mix of stain without measuring anything. He added the pigments one by one until he had just the color he wanted. In the end, he was able to perfectly replicate the color and finish of an authentic Heywood Wakefield piece. That is when I realized these guys are not just craftsmen, they're artists. All of this would be more than enough to deserve an A rating, but in addition, they're some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. I seriously want to buy more furniture just so that I can get it refinished again at Gabel's.
Description of Work: I bought a dresser on Craigslist and it was in pretty rough shape when I took it to them. Honestly, I didn't know how much they would be able to do with it, but I had no expectation that they would make it look brand new. They did. Not only did Gabel's meticulously sand and remove all of the old finish, inside and out, but they were even able to bleach out stains and water marks that had deeply penetrated the wood. Amazing.

We have been using Gabel's for over 20 years and they have done an excellent job for us each and every time. They have done beautiful work for my parents and their friends as well. We just picked up our last 2 pieces and they totally surpassed our expectations of what the old chest and cabinet could look like. They resored, repaired and refinished it to a beautiful condition. They have once again done their magic. I always recommend Gabels to my friends and feel that Dave Gabel, Chris and the rest of the team are always there to take care of me and my furniture. Very professional and talented. They wont dissapoint you. You will love what they can do for your furniture.
Description of Work: We brought them an oak dresser and small cabinet that goes on the top. These peices were in my husbands family for over 100 years. These had been sitting in a chicken coop for many years and then went to college with our daughter and then got more "wear". We wanted Gabel's to restore these loved pieces to their lovely original condition to be used again in our home. They shaved the bottom of the drawers so they would work smoothly, re-glued the top, replaced some broken edges of the drawers, got out the scratches and stains and now the 2 pieces are ready to be enjoyed in our home for many more generations to come.

Dave gave us a tour of the shop, showing us exactly what he would do with the chairs. We were very impressed with his knowledge and obvious passion for his work. Once he had stripped down the chairs, he found that there was more work than anticipated, e.g. he had to painstakingly remove a bunch of old staples. For this he didn't charge us extra. He also found a crumpled copy of a 1913 Cape Times stuffed in one of the chairs and made sure that it was saved and passed on to us. The finished chairs are beautiful -- the restoration allowed us to keep a piece of history.
Description of Work: My sister and I brought in two pairs of chairs that we had inherited from our grandmother. Two of the chairs dated back to the 1800s and the other two were about 100 years old. Although of solid construction, they were in serious need of repair. A couple had damage to their frames and all had been badly reupholstered. In addition, they had endured being shipped over here all the way from South Africa. Gabel's stripped down the chairs to their frames and reglued/repaired them where needed, refinishing the legs as well. They then had to retie the seats and reweb the backs on a couple. All needed new seat cushions and the backs in the older chairs had to be built up too. They were then reupholstered, complete with "antimacassars." (I understand now that this is mostly a Britsh word for protective coverings for the arms and back of the chair!)

I found a free coffee table on the street which I originally thought I wanted to refinish myself. But I had guests arriving on the 15th of April and wanted the table done by then. My plan was to have someone else strip the coffee table and then to apply the finish myself. On March 26 I took the table to Gabel's to get an estimate for stripping the table. After Gabel's looked at the table and after discussing the details of what refinishing would entail, I decided to have Gabel's do the whole job. Chris, a very informative salesperson called me in to see the table once it had been stripped and showed me various color options for the final staining of the table. I was very, very pleased with the result. The table has an oil based finish on it so that if water is spilled on the table, the water beads up and as long as it is wiped up quickly and well, there is no harm done to the finish. The table was done in time for guests who arrived at my home on April 15th. I avoided the hassle of refinishing the table myself in my old, cold, 1920's garage. I avoided shopping for and handling and disposing of refinishing products and couldn't be happier that I now have a coffee table that is just right for my living room. And, re-cycling old wood makes me happy. But it is a lot easier to do when you have people at Gabel's do it. Hand stripping wood is time consuming, so I would not like to suggest that every project could be done on such a close timeline as my project. In my case, I was fortunate that Gabel's was able to accommodate me and get the table done in time for my guests. The price quoted for the job was exactly what I was charged and way less than I would have paid for a new coffee table. I was very pleased with the informative salesperson, Chris. One thing I liked was Gabel's doesn't take credit cards, so it's cash or check. That way I took care of it and didn't create any credit card debt for this project.
Description of Work: A mid-century coffee table, of two different kinds of wood I found for "free" on the street, with a very badly damaged finish was hand stripped and given a hand-rubbed finish.

We used Gabel’s for two assignments (1) reupholstering two pieces (2) creates cushion for a nook. Dave Gabel visit our house and looked at the furniture. He asvise dus about what was and was not worth reupholstering. What impressed me about him though was his clear love of furniture. We discussed other pieces and it seemed to me (a novice) that he spoke from both knowledge and affection for old pieces.
Description of Work: The work itself involved (1) putting new fabric on two older but quite study pieces: a couch and arm chair. We reviewed fabric selections at Gabel’s. we got a clear idea of cost and selection. (2) Creating four cushions for a nook (that is, a table surrounded by a bench). Again we had a chance to review available fabric from what appeared to us to be a robust selection.
