We made an appointment with Brennan to have our furnace cleaned as part of the Angie's List coupon. The deal was during the slow season, as the assistant on the phone told us. She was very polite and scheduled an appointment with us. The tech arrived on time on the appointed date, and cleaned our furnace. When he was through, he called me over to "show me something." He was not aware that my husband was at home, apparently, and looked a bit surprised when I called my husband over to talk to him. The tech then informed my husband that a part on our furnace was old and cracked and the risk of the furnace leaking carbon monoxide was very high. He suggested replacing then entire furnace and, lo and behold, there was a special going on with Brennan. He then left us estimates for three different levels of furnace that we could use and, just to be safe, turn off the internal switch that fed gas to the furnace. Keep in mind, these estimates ranged from $2700 to nearly $7500...and the furnace was now completely deactivated. At this point my husband decided that we needed a second opinion and called the company we have using for years. Our usual company sent a tech the next day who checked over the guy's work and told her that although our furnace was old, there was nothing wrong with it. He then asked if the tech showed us a CO2 meter reading to prove his claims. Brennan's tech had not. Our usual company's tech then showed us a CO2 meter reading which proved to us that our furnace was completely within a safe emissions range. He then kindly turned the gas back on inside our furnace. Then, of course, we had to pay our usual company's tech for his time, on top of the Angie's List coupon fee. A bit of a false economy, we think. I am glad that this happened during the warmer months, when we didn't have to worry about not having heat and did not feel pressured into making an expensive financial decision out of fear, one that is still a few years away for us. That said, this solidified two things for me: One, in spite of the technician's punctuality, I am never using Brennan again and will advise others to steer clear of them. And two, I will be cancelling my Angie's List Big Deal subscription.

Response from Brennan Heating & Air Conditioning
I have left the homeowners a message with an offer of a free review when both of them are present. We never tell a homeowner they are getting CO in the house but when we find cracks in the heat exchangers, especially on an old furnace, we like to be straight and let them know the potential of CO coming into the house during the Winter is way greater and at that point give them prices for replacing the heat exchangers or replaceing the furnace. Our service techs are not high pressure salepeople but we do like to give our customers options. If the cracks are bad enough our policy is to shut the furnace down. We can not leave a furnace operating in that condition for many reasons, liability being one but also we don't feel thats doing right by our customers. Hopefully we will be able to make contact with the homeowners and once again show them what our tech found in the heat exchangers. Thanks.

During an unrelated job in the garage, a worker from another company mentioned that our furnace had not been installed correctly and was not level. He explained that for proper performance the furnace and venting must be level and that condensation can run back into the furnace and damage it if it's not level. Looking at the furnace, it clearly was tilting backwards and the venting pipes were not perfectly vertical and horizontal where they exit the furnace. I called Brennan with my concerns and they sent a rep out to take a look and they agreed that it hadn't been installed well and a follow up appointment was made to correct the issue. During that follow up appointment, the worker attempted to level the furnace and make repairs but in tearing it apart, he discovered that the poor installation had indeed damaged the internals of the unit and that parts would have to be ordered. Specifically- a new 'heater core'- which is the meat of the entire furnace from what I've gathered. While I was unhappy that the furnace had been installed poorly to begin with, and that the "inspection" by the city had passed, and that this very expensive furnace was damaged and had not been operating at optimum capacity in the two years since it was installed, I was happy that Brennan was owning up to it and taking responsibility. A lot of companies might have just given me a hard time and tried to blame it on ground settling or some other silly variable. So they were very upfront in making it right. Luckily this happened during the summer as we were without a furnace for quite a long time. It seems finding the heater core for this furnace is not as easy as I might have hoped, and I did have to call every couple of weeks to get the ball rolling on the final repair but all in all it worked out fine.. In fact, the gentleman doing the final installation discovered a short in my doorbell transformer which was sizzling and frying the lines behind the wall and could have easily burned down the house if not discovered by his keen ears and eyes.... Not a simple review. I wish I could have given them all A's on this, but that initial installation nixed that possibility. They do get kudos for taking responsibility for the debacle and making it right though.

See above comments. DO NOT HIRE BRENNAN HEATING!
Description of Work: We hired Brennan Heating to do an annual service on our gas furnace for $68. The service tech came out to our home, spent a few minutes in our furnace room and then told us that our furnace heat exchanger was damaged and that carbon monoxide was being pumped into our home. He then said it would be $2800 to fix the heat exchanger, but he recommended a new furnace since ours is an older unit. He then gave us a few options to choose from and quotes ranging up to $7000 for a new furnace. He left and we decided to get another opinion since our furnace had been working fine previously and our carbon monoxide detectors had never once alarmed. We had Puget Sound Energy come out to check the furnace (which they do for free). PSE opened up the furnace and found the circut box hanging from the few remaining wires still connected, the majority of the wires had been ripped out of the circuit box (obviously done by Brennan Heating because the furnace had been working until his visit and PSE confirmed that the furnace can not function with out the circuit box). PSE spent an hour reconnecting the circuit box to be able to test the furnace. PSE found NO damage to the heat exchanger and NO carbon monoxide detected from the vents. We then hired another company to check and service the furnace, just to make sure it was safe and becasue Brennan Heating did not preform any of the annual service tasks that we hired them to do. The second company came out and also confirmed that the furnace is working fine, no problems, no damage to the heat exchanger and no carbon monoxide in our home. Then I called Brennan Heating to report our finding and question their recommendations. I spoke with a service manager and explaned the entire story, then he transferred me to a woman (I assume reception) who took my phone number, said they would look into it and call me back by the next day. After 1 week, I have received no call back and I am disputing the charge with my credit card. Shameful Brennan!!!

Response from Brennan Heating & Air Conditioning
First off I am sorry Member is not happy with our service. One of our most experience service technicians was on this call and if you review 1 of the hundreds of A reports we have received you will see Kevins name on many of them. Kevin removed the blower motor to be able to take a good look at the primary and secondary heat exchangers. Kevin found the secondary heat exchangers extremely rusted out with cracks and leaking. Kevin also showed the Member his findings and reviewed what he was looking at and what the dangers could be. We never say a house is getting carbon monoxide but we do say if asked, that there is the potential for CO to be transferred into the house when there are cracks. We gave the Member many price options from repair to 3 furnace replacement options. Kevin is a service tech, he is not a pressure salesperson trying to make a sale. His job is to educate and give all the options. Mr Dir told him not to reinstall the blower because the furnace would be replaced. The high price on replacement was $4150 plus tax. We were asked to also bid adding new duct work to his basement to add heat which in turn brought the high bit to $7000. The furnace in the Members residence is an older 90% effecient furnace that has a track record of secondary heat exchangers rusting out and causing problems. Brennan Heating would never tear apart a furnace and leave the call without putting it back together without direction from the homeowner. I have reached out to the Member on multiple occasions now with no response. I would like to send my tech back out and review what we found and once again show the homeowner the condition of their furnace. We do not do work as described above, if we did we would not have the rating we do Angies List and would not have won all the awards we have. Hopefully at some point I can make contact with the Member's and review the situation. Thanks for reading this response.

We purchased a Big Deal for an Early Bird Furnace Clean & Check to prep for the first winter in our new home. Imran arrived on time, was very friendly and informative and performed a thorough cleaning/tune up. He also offered some thoughts on our water heater in terms of considering a new tank and transitioning from electric to either gas or tankless. In all, couldn't have been happier with the visit, as has been the case with our prior interactions with Brennan.

The company scheduled the visit for not too long after my phone call. Mike showed up promptly and got right to work. He answered our questions courteously and completely and took the time to explain how the system worked (this home is new to us) and showed us how we could use the thermostat to accomplish what we wanted the system to do. His manner was pleasant and cheerful and he seemed pleased to be of help. We'll certainly use this company on a regular basis and we hope they will send us this same employee each time. The regular price quoted for this service was quite a bit higher than we were accustomed to paying at our former home but we were able to use an Angie's coupon.

The tech, Adam G., came out and did the work. He said the type of furnace I have would not cost that much to fix. He quoted me a price $100 cheaper than the deal. That was very honest. He said our furnace is in very good shape and did not need to worry about getting a new one soon. They are every quick and efficient with their work.

We hired Brennan to install a new A/C unit at our house. We interviewed two firms but ultimately went with Brennan because we trusted them more and felt like we would receive better service from Brennan than the other providers. As quick background, my investment firm owns three plumbing and HVAC companies in Sacramento, Dallas, and Houston and I've talked to hundreds of plumbing and HVAC companies as part of my job. So when we hired Brennan I was careful to ask a lot of questions to ensure the services we expect customers to receive at our companies. From start to finish, the service was outstanding. Ryan, the salesperson, was knowledgeable and trustworthy--we basically picked Brennan because of the good vibes we got from Ryan. He was also extremely responsive and helpful leading up to the installation. On the day of the installation, we met Tyler the electrician along with Murphy, Edward, and Martin. Tyler spent the better part of the day trying to find a workaround that wouldn't require punching an extra hole int eh wall. He communicated clearly what he was doing and showed us the issues so that when he did have to put a small hole in the wall, we knew why and where and when he was ultimately finished his work looked great Murphy was the lead installer and was just exceptional. He made my wife and i feel very comfortable and went out of his way to show us what the team accomplished and how to use the system most effectively. We are now long-term Brennan customers and we could not be more happy with the service.

The first day was a disaster. The crew floundered around making huge mistakes in the demo and install, which few laypersons could possibly have overlooked. Management wouldn't heed my complaints, arguing that "the crew is very experienced". On the second day, I had them tear out the pipes and wiring and redo the installation, with an adequate result. However, a competent crew would have done the job right the first time around, and for nearly $7k, I felt that I had not obtained good value. After the installation, I was very disappointed to find that the "quietest furnace" from Lennox (the SLP98UHV) came equipped with a large vocabulary of squeaks and squawks, gurgles, swooshing noises, sounds of air being compressed and released (like truck brakes), and worst of all, terrifying high-pitched screeches of one spinning plastic part grinding against another one. The Brennan service agent took the position that all these noises were normal, but to humor me, he changed out one part--which didn't change anything. Also, a few days after the install I noticed 3 puddles of (undoubtedly toxic) heating oil under my organic pear tree, whose locations clearly corresponded to various parts of the old oil furnace that they had dumped on the lawn (I have photos). Specific Details I never caught the foreman's name (Rodney tells me it was "Scotty"), but the guy who is doing most of the gas piping work is Dave, and another guy who says he's "a helper" is Mike. Anyway, I'm disappointed with how things went on the first day of demo/installation, which has me wondering about the training and expertise of the salesman and crew members and the effectiveness of the team's quality control procedures. Here's a list of the major problems so far. 1) The last time the salesman (Rodney) visited my house, we agreed that facing the furnace toward the East wall would be the best choice. However, Scotty told me that wasn't allowed, because there had to be 28" clearance to allow swapping out the heat exchanger. I remember Rodney measuring out the same distance, and coming to the opposite conclusion! 2) Re-orienting the furnace to face West caused the original furnace's heating plenum to block a straight shot to the East wall, so they're routing PVC pipes around the side of the furnace alongside the return plenum. When I noticed that Mike had run two PVC pipes directly alongside the ducts, I told him that concerned me because I figured that the PVC (and/or the metal pipe hangers) would eventually rattle against the aluminum ductwork. Along the same lines, the exhaust coupler from the furnace comes very close to the heating plenum and the intake coupler is very tightly jammed against that same plenum (it's so tight, I wonder if it was hammered into place!). I'm concerned that the fittings of these couplers are also going to rattle (in the case of the loose one) or squeak (for the super-tight one) against the plenum someday. NOTICE: I purchased the "quietest furnace in the world" for a good reason, and that was not because I wanted to hear annoying noises from my ducts (which are very good at turning small vibrations into loud sounds)! 3) I noticed Mike trying to wrap an insufficiently long PVC pipe around the edge of the return plenum and cement it to the intake port coupler on the furnace at a 15 degree angle (rather than the required head-on zero degree angle), using all his might to keep the joint closed until the glue could set . Luckily, there wasn't sufficient contact between the parts to maintain the joint. Scotty was right there when I asked Mike what he was doing, and he confirmed to Mike that his approach was incorrect. I later told Scotty that I didn't want Mike running any more piping for my furnace. 4) Dave ran a gas pipe for the kitchen's range, but measured short by two inches (I heard him tell Scotty this). Scotty instructed him to use a couple of 90-degree angles to span the gap. I don't think that's a code violation, but I would have preferred to have a correctly sized piece instead to minimize the number of joints that could leak someday! 5) The T-connector installed for the range was about 4 inches from the back wall, on the floor. This position caused it to strike the bracing for the left rear foot of the range, preventing it from being pushed all the way to the wall. When I showed this to Scotty, he said that Dave must have misunderstood his directions about placing the T, so he had him move the T closer to the wall. To Scotty's credit, he had Dave fix this before work ended today. The range fits now, but I'm left thinking that if I hadn't tested the fit of the range today, the original hole would have been left there for good. Now I've got two holes in my kitchen floor, but at least one is in the right place. 6) When I inspected the hole that Dave drilled in the outside wall to run the gas pipe into the basement, I asked him if he had over- drilled the hole to allow the vinyl siding layer to contract and expand with temperature fluctuations without binding on the pipe (which can cause squeaky noises, buckling, and discoloration of the vinyl). He didn't seem to know anything about this issue, and told me "we always drill the holes this size". That's not what I wanted to hear. I can't tell by looking at the hangers for that pipe, but I suspect that their mounting holes were sized so the screws would catch on the vinyl and the wood, rather than passing easily through the vinyl to catch on the wood. If so, this could cause trouble down the road! 7) I'm annoyed with the stuff that's sticking out of the South side of the furnace--such as the condensate pump, the gas feed, and the electrical box. I wish this stuff was on the other side (where the furnace orientation I decided on with Rodney would have placed it), so I could be confident that people could walk past these protruding obstacles without bumping into them. This won't be easy, because, for example, the power cord's loop sticks out a full 7 inches from the side of the furnace! (With the furnace orientation Rodney and I had decided on, these items wouldn't be in the walkway.) 8) The crew dumped the (probably carcinogenic) oil furnace parts on my back lawn right under an organic pear tree, which is full of fruit. One quick rainstorm, like we had on Sunday, and toxins would have been washed off the 60 year old furnace right into the soil! I would have expected them to lay down a tarp first, at least. Even better, they could have asked me were I would like them to pile up the trash! I paid a lot of money for this furnace and nothing would please me more than to be able to sit back and relax while an experienced crew of HVAC professionals installs it perfectly, and to write a glowing testimonial for Angie's List. However, that's not the way things have been shaping up so fa. As you can tell by the list above, I was able to observe many mistakes in my periodic visits to the work site, which leaves me wondering how many more mistakes they made when I wasn't looking!
Description of Work: Removed old oil furnace and hauled away, installed new 98% efficiency Lennox furnace.
