He told me that he charged by the hour, plus materials. He said I want the job, and I said its yours if can you do it for around $3000.00. He took my cabinet doors and off he went. Two weeks later, they started to prep. They would show up late, and leave early, which really dragged the job out. They also were very messy- left pee on my bathroom floor, broke the bench in my back yard, left ground floor windows open, would not cover my brand new range while painting and caulking, didn't close gate, etc. They also would paint randomly in the kitchen, not start at one side and work around - rather they did spots, then would go to the other side of the room and paint something over there. This led to James painting the inside of a cabinet that was supposed to be clear coat, which then necessitated him painting a whole row of cabinets rather than clear coat them. That was the day that I found an empty 40 Oz beer by where they had been parked in front of my neighbors house. I kept mentioning my desire to be done and that I had a budget I wanted to stick to, and that I was getting nervous time wise. On October 5, I sent an email asking where I stood money wise, and said I didn't want to spend more than I could afford. I still had not had a response by 10/8, so I spoke with James directly. He denied getting the email, and he seemed offended by my asking how much I was at money wise. I told him I would finish painting if we were over budget. He said he didn't think I wanted to do that, and I said no I didn't but I couldn't spend money I don't have. I asked him to direct his time to the cabinet doors, and give me my balance. He said ok. On 10/10 he delivered a few panels I needed, then I asked again for my balance - which he said Anne would have. On Sunday 10/12 I sent another email requesting my balance, and reiterating my budget and need to stick to it. I also mentioned I was uncomfortable that I had not been given my balance and that it was making me nervous. Well today they tell me my balance is $6700 - more than $3000.00 over my budget- more than twice my initial estimates. I told him that it is not okay. I had a budget I needed to stick to and my repeated requests for my balance had gone unheeded. He denied agreeing to $3000 (rough) budget, denied my having said I had two bids, denied I had requested my balance repeatedly, and told me he still needs 20 more hours! I said we need to work an agreement on that bill, because I refuse to pay $6700 when I had repeatedly told him I needed to stay in budget $3000. He just wanted to tell me what he did, and said I didn't want to finish the job. No I don't want to finish it, but I can't keep paying him endlessly for this. I said bring me my cabinet doors, and no more painting by you. I anxiously await my doors, and the "time cards" he said he can show me. I strongly suggest NEVER HIRE THEM!
Description of Work: I hired James to paint my 12'x12' kitchen. This included ceiling, a little exposed wall, and the cabinets which were new. When I first talked to James, I told him I had two other bids for about $3000.00, and that I wanted to spend about that much.
