We were looking for ways to get our project done as economically as possible, and were thrilled when Artistic Design's estimator recommended that we install our own firring strips on the ceiling of our garage to save money. My husband rented a nail gun and spent a weekend installing the firring strips (spacers that help the drywall get installed level over an uneven surface). Artistic Designs employees came the following week and installed the drywall on top of the firring strips, leaving drywall mud all over our beautifully finished wooden walls. When we went down to the garage to inspect (clean up) their work after they had finished, we also found several screws lying around and realized they were too short to penetrate the drywall and firring strip to actually reach the structural ceiling above. In other words, the drywall was not actually fastened to the ceiling. We researched the Seattle Building Code and discovered that screws that short weren't even allowed for this purpose! When my husband called Artistic Design to discuss the issue, they at first tried to blame him for not using screws to secure the firring stips (which should never be used for a structural or support purpose anyway--they're just spacers). Then they said that it wouldn't matter anyway because they were "secure enough"; my husband replied that the screws were too short to be within code and that the situation was dangerous and unacceptable because they drywall was marginally attached to the ceiling (at best!). We were concerned it would fall right off in an earthquake. They finally agreed to "humor us" and come back out to install sufficient screws. We were relieved that Artistic Designs was ultimately persuaded to perform decent work, but we won't be calling them for our next project.

Response from ARTISTIC DESIGN
First of all I had just became a member to Angie's List as a General Contractor, in becoming a member it came to my attention that there was a customer response that I performed back in April of 2010. As this person wrote yes there were some problems that occurred but not fully in the way she reported. First of all I never even had discussion with her it was always with her husband. And yes we talked about these firing strips that needed to be installed, and the reason for this is that the customer had a ceiling with 1"x5" boards that were solid covering the complete ceiling and the walls were the same. I said to the customer that he is going to need these firing strips to fir down the ceiling so that the sheetrock will cover over these wires that were stapled onto the wood. I offered to fir these down for a charge of 1hr. labor at $50.00hr, so the customer offered to do it himself for the purpose of saving money, not that I suggested he do it. Well the day that my worker showed up for the job he installed the sheetrock and I was ready the next day to have my taper to proceed with the mudding and taping. I got a call from the home owner and he asked me what size screw I had used, it was one that was of proper length in applying sheetrock. Come to find out the nails that he used to apply firing strips were more on the line of a large head finish nail and there wasn't enough meat in the nail to go through the 5/8" firing strip and the boards onto the ceiling, let alone the ceiling joists. He began to throw out all these codes, and yes I was perturbed, because if he used the proper nail to begin with the screws that we used would have been just fine. The fact is I wasn't or my company wasn't trying to cut corners in cost of materials, the difference between a 2" screw and 1"1/4 we are looking at maybe $1, and yes we did go back and fix the problem, we sunk 2" screws into his ceiling and fixed the problem, but I take exception that he isn't taking responsibility to the equation of all that happened and lastly there was no mud on any finished walls, otherwise they could have included a picture and even if there was a little mud on the walls, warm water and a sponge could have taken the residue off. Finally I don't see any reason for sour grapes, they paid me, and I fixed the problem
