It went very well. They were very accommodating -- they agreed to our request to leave the grand piano (fully covered/protected) in the project area. Other contractors/bidders required the work area to be completely clear.

American Environmental Construction was one of the asbestos removal specialists recommended by the asbestos testing lab. From estimate to job completion, this company was professional, competent, and charged a very reasonable price. Since this portion of our remodel had to be completed before anything else could be started, it was crucial that there be no delays or problems. Once again, an Angie's List company came through with flying colors. The estimator (one of the owners) was thorough, and extremely professional. We knew exactly what the removal process would entail, and the costs were clearly detailed. On the day work was scheduled to start, the crew arrived on time, and commenced without delay. The appropriate barriers were installed, and the crew members all wore the required PPE...one of those key indicators of a professional team that knows how to deal with hazardous materials! The foreman also noticed that there was additional asbestos flooring in our kitchen, which we mistakenly thought had been removed several years earlier. The crew removed that as well, which saved us from having the hardwood floor installation come to a grinding halt! While this was our first (and hopefully last!) experience with asbestos removal, if we ever needed a similar service in the future, we would hire American Environmental Construction again without hesitation. We highly recommend this company!
Description of Work: We had vinyl flooring removed after testing revealed it contained a layer of asbestos. This was done in preparation for installing hardwood floors in our home.

The company had closed off the vents in the living areas with plastic taped to the wall and floor. They specifically used painters tape (rather than duct tape) due to the hardwood floors; however, they used the older painters tape (blue colored) and it did not stick well. I had black soot on the floors in the living area where the old tape gave way. I was lucky that the soot did not get on my carpet, since I had folded it back to get it away from the vent. They also missed removing some smaller bits of asbestos tape in the basement that was readily visible. They were responsive when I called and notified the company that there was remaining asbestos, and set up an appointment right away to take care of what was overlooked. They told me that it was safe for me to wipe up the black soot from the floors. The owner came out to take care of the remaining tape and was very apologetic for any inconvenience and thourough by surveying the basement to make sure nothing was overlooked. The guys on the work crew were professional, super pleasant and showed up at the time and date set. The job took less time than they alloted, and they called me when it was all clear to come home (which I did immediately.) The crew had left before I returned home, or I would have been able to address the caveats listed below right away. The caveats: Make sure that they use new tape to mask the heater vents. (If they had cleaned up the soot, I would have been none the wiser.) I was told that I needed to leave the house during the asbestos removal, but could lock my pet up in either a room or kennel. My feeling is if it is not okay for me to be home, I should not leave my pet there either. The pluses: The crew was very nice, and extremely polite. They were very informative in regards to answering questions that the furnace installer wanted to know, and even volunteered to speak directly with the furnace company to coordinate any details.
Description of Work: I had a gravity furnace from the 1920s and needed to remove all the asbestos from the furnace and ductwork to put in a modern furnace.

This was the first step in our remodelling plan, and their quick work allowed us to get other contractors into the house to help with our design and planning process. I was very happy with their thoroughness.
Description of Work: They removed the asbestos in the ceiling of my house--upstairs and downstairs. The area was quite large (and expensive), but they arrived as advertised and did all of the work promptly. Where I had questions, they were able to give detailed explanations. Before they began work, I was asked to remove some things that would have interfered with their work--draperies and some lights. When I did this, some asbestos came out with the lights...in their cleanup, they noted this and cleaned all of this up as well. I would have never noticed this omission, but they were quite detailed about getting everything cleaned up.

We decided to reside our house to update the appearance of our house, to eliminate tiles that were starting to crack, and to coincide with some exterior electrical work that would have required multiple holes (patches) in the old siding. With new siding, we were able to remove the old siding, have the electrical work done, and then covered up with the new siding. American Environmental was hired to remove and dispose of the asbestos siding only. They arrived on time, set up containment, wore protective suits and masks, and set to work. They kept the siding wetted down to keep the fibers from becoming friable. The crew of four finished in about half a day, contained and picked up everything, and left the area around the house clean. We were happy to have this done, and they did a great job!

Following a groundwater flood in my basement, the sheetrock throughout wicked up water and became covered in mold. Testing showed that the bedroom walls, which had been covered in a decorative swirling plaster design, contained 2% chrysotile asbestos. That's when I called in Ed P. to help me with my problem. He bent over backwards to deal with my situation which was really quite complicated since there was part of the claim being covered by MY insurance company and part that was not, so he had to come to my house multiple times and break the bid down multiple ways and sign all sorts of papers to get this job done for me. The job consisted of removing all the asbestos containing wallboard in the bedroom which was 4 walls and a ceiling plus walls in the closet, plus cleaning off my belongings that had been in the room when a different company cut into the asbestos without taking proper precautions and spread the fibers around. They also did a small amount of mold remediation that included moldy places other than on the contaminated wallboard. The crew was good and careful and I feel confident that they conducted the removal correctly . It is important to me that asbestos fibers aren't being tossed around in my house or in the environment outside. I would also like to add that Linda, the Office Manager, is incredible and keeps everyone going in the right direction at the right time!

I was not there in person to observe, but the job apparently got done satisfactorily. They coordinated well with the installers of my new furnace. I was in a time bind-- it was February, cold outside, the old furnace died, a new one needed to be installed immediately-- so I relied upon Angie's List to help me get the job done. Of course I gulp at the cost of such services -- hard to imagine that it needs to be so pricey!-- but I needed the service, needed it immediately without waiting around for multiple estimates, and other users of Angle's List seemed to have been satisfied. The job got done in the tight timeline and the new furnace was able to be installed. That was the most important thing for me.
Description of Work: They removed and hauled away the large "octopus-style" furnace from the basement of a rental house, preparatory to the replacement of the furnace. Because the old furnace had some asbestos-wrapped components, the sevices of a specialized asbestos-abatement professional was required by my furnace installer.

I found the firm on Angie's List and contacted them for an estimate to remove the ceilings in my condo. I had already had them tested and knew they contained asbestos. I received a call back within an hour, indicating who the residential estimator was and when he would contact me to schedule an appt. He called within 10 minutes and we scheduled an appt for the next morning. Ed showed up right on time and was extremely professional. He answered all my questions and clarified some information I had received from other firms regarding drywall coverage, etc. He suggested a few different options to approach the job which was very helpful. He promised a written bid within 1-2 days and it was sent the next day. The bid came in a bit lower than another firm. In the end, I decided to tolerate the ceilings for a while rather than move all my belongings into storage for a few days. However, should I decide to move forward with the project, I will call Ed again and have them do the work.

Ed the gentleman who came to give me an estimate was open, informative and professional. I had done a lot of research and he respected my questions. I got 3 quotes. His was not the cheapest but I had confidence that they hired qualified people and would try to protect my beautiful paneling that I have hand refinished recentily. It took several hours. The smell was sicky sweet but went away after 3 days of fans and open windows. I do have more scratches on my beautiful paneling. I imagine they tried very hard not to scratch the walls but it is disappointing. It is labor intensive work and it is a very large room. They did a very good job of leveling the residue on the 1928 cement floor. I would not have choosen the other companies and would use them again if I needed abateemt services.
Description of Work: Removal of Lineoleum tile free of asbestos but with mastic(glue) contaminated by Chrysotile. They hand shoveled the tile off the cement floor and razor scraped the glue. After using plastic sheeting to protect the paneled walls they used a solvent to dissolve and soften the material. It took several hours.

Our remodel contractor arranged for American Enviromental to come out. They were extremely responsive, available quickly, and reasonably price. They worked quickly, and did an excellent job. My surprise is about billing. I was to pay them directly, but apparently became confused. Given the number of bills flying around during a major remodel, I'm sure it's not that uncommon. I may have forgotten at thought the expense was passing through the contractor. I freely admit the bill was my obligation, and that this was my error. Nine months have transpired. No secondary billing, no phone calls. Today the bill was referred to a collection agency. Certainly within their right - but not very forward thinking. In my case, and second bill in the mail (even with penalties) would have cause my to notice my error and have paid months ago. Now they have to eat a collection agencies fees to boot. I was happy with their work, had no idea I hadn't paid for it (and feel poorly about that), but I'm not likely to do business with these folks again. No common sense in the back office.

It was great from start to finish. Ed did the estimate. He was very nice. He arrived on schedule and the bid was emailed the next day. I made the appointment for the removal and it was within a few days. The crew of three arrived right on time. They were very nice and conscientious. They were very considerate of the neighbors, my dog and the house. The did the job in about 4 hrs. I can't believe they did that much work in that little time. The space was left immaculate. John kept me informed through out the project. He is a happy upbeat guy and I enjoyed working with him and his crew. I would definitely use them again.

Working with American Environmental was great. When we purchased our home, we weren't initially planning on getting asbestos abatement done (we were going to drywall over the popcorn ceiling that contained asbestos), but after doing a good deal of research, we decided to get the project done right. American Environmental was amazing - they were easy to get ahold of, prompt, and did everything exactly as they said they would. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to other people, and would use them again.

I was very pleased with this company. Ed came out to give an estimate within 1-2 days of my contacting the company (in February) and emailed the estimate to me within 1 day. While his estimate was ~10% higher than that of another company, I went with American Environmental because they employ multiple people with experience in this area (see their website) and the other company seemed to be one guy who hires workers as he needs them. This company was very pleasant to work with and highly professional; the only problem was that after I scheduled in February for late June, then moved the date to early July (then moved it once more when their scheduler suggested pushing the work by one day to better match my schedule), there seemed to be undue confusion about which was the actual finalized start date. I ended up emailing several times and then exchanging phone calls several times to clear all of this up. On the other hand, they were very pleasant, responsive, and accommodating. The crew was prompt and friendly. The work only took 2 days, which amazed me because Ed had estimated 3 days and our ceiling is complicated in some areas. (Ours is the kind of house where work always turns up surprises that end up taking longer than originally estimated - didn't happen for their work!) There were 2 things which turned out to be necessities which weren't mentioned ahead of time. First, I stayed in the part of the house without asbestos, which turned out to be useful because on the morning of the 2nd day they suddenly wanted access to a 220v outlet (without unplugging the refrigerator, which was sealed off with plastic anyway). If I'd known ahead of time that a 220v outlet was going to be needed, I could have planned better where I was piling up stuff moved out from the work area. Second, I rented a portable toilet because the bathrooms were all going to be sealed off for 2 days and I would be needing a toilet to use. The workers ended up using it, which is great but also makes me wonder where they would have done their business, so to speak, if the portable toilet hadn't been there. I'd read in other reviews of various asbestos-abatement companies that the tops of the walls look terrible when they're done. I was pleased that that didn't happen in our case, though the other comments that popcorn ceilings were often put up to hide flaws in the ceiling certainly did turn out to be true!

Spoke with Ed at American Environmental about getting an estimate on removing the asbestos containing popcorn ceiling texture in my house. He told me that this was a service that his company provided, and would be happy to come over and give me an estimate for removal. Well, he never showed up for the estimate. He had my telephone number and address, so I'm wondering why he didn't call to inform me that he wouldn't be coming. This is a big red flag, and shows disrespect for other peoples time. I'm not sure why he couldn't make it, but a phone call would have been nice. I'm not an unreasonable person, so a phone call to reschedule, or to say that he couldn't do the job would have been acceptable. Big red flag!

I met the team of 3 guys right at 8am when they said they would be there, and they were gone by 6pm when I got home. The asbestos had been removed and I was impressed with the condition of the ceiling when I got there. The walls have an older wallpaper covered with multiple layers of paint, and in some areas the tape they used pulled some of it down, but still better that I expected. The ceiling was also down to the bare drywall, but it looked pretty darn good.

I was replacing the boiler in my 100 year old home. All of the water pipes have asbestos insulation which needs to be removed before the pipes can be refitted to the new boiler. When I asked for the estimate the heating contractor had already marked where the asbestos needed to be removed except for one area to the kitchen. I received an estimate which was specific to the known areas and one approximation for the kitchen. They have a good reputation and the price seemed fair so I hired them. This is complicated messy work but they did a great job of enclosing the area to keep asbestos dust out of the house. The work was great. the kitchen portion turned out to be a lot less than originally thought but all other work was as estimated. They did a great job When I received the invoice for the work, it was, unlike the estimate, in one lump sum and the amount was almost double! As it was not itemized, I assumed they didn't take into account the reduction in the kitchen work so I did a proportionate reduction. They called me later and said the issue was not the kitchen but they had removed double the amount from the know portion. This did not make sense as the area was known to the estimator so why did he halve it? This would mean he deliberately low balled it OR just didn't know what he was doing (estimator). The foreman on the job admitted he should have created a change order but didn't so we left the payment as originally estimated
