They were very professional when they arrived, however their estimate was too high in comparison with other firms that I set up appointments with competitors.

Their contract included the installation of a dehumidifier in the crawlspace to reduce the moisture levels below the house in the crawlspace and on the inside of the house. It also included an instrument to reflect the temperature and humidity levels in the crawlspace and the inside of the house. I contacted Lucas to inform him that the humidity levels were lower on the inside of the house due to the installation of the dehumidifier in the crawl space. I provided him via e-mail he humidity levels for both areas for a 30-day period. He responded back requesting the make, model and serial number for the dehumidifier. Later I realized that he used this information to set me up in making his claim that the dehumidifier was consuming the cost savings from ceiling the attic. He sent me an e-mail making this claim and also attached attachments from the internet supporting his contention. I was livid and Lucas called and asked me to review the information he had sent; I informed him I was not going to study or read the information he had sent as I was not an engineer and it was his job to resolve the issues related to the work he had perform. I informed Orkin of his e-mail and contention that the electricity from the dehumidifier would consume enough electricity to eat up the 20% cost savings; Orkin requested that I send this information to them and they would respond, Their response was in the form of an e-mail that stated the dehumidifier would not run any more than 2 hours per day and would not consume enough electricity to eat up the 20% cost savings he promised me. Lucas of Key Energy Solutions sent Orkin another set of questions and did not copy me. I had sent Lucas several e-mails requesting next steps and actions regarding resolutions to the issues with the attic and the extra heat in the second story. He did not respond except for an e-mail he sent stating he would respond to me after Orkin responded to the questions he sent them. I contacted Orkin and they informed me there were not planning to respond to the questions Lucas had sent and stated they were not going to share their information with him because he was their competitor. I e-mailed Lucas and informed him Orkin was not going to respond to the questions. Lucas had the nerve to send me an e-mail asked why they were not going to respond. I responded that I did not know ?but had an idea that I did not choose to disclose. To make a long story short, Lucas is not knowledgeable of the work he performed in sealing the attic in my house and has grabbed at every straw possible to back me off his promise of a 20% savings in my utility bills. The fact that he is researching on the internet and sending me articles from the internet shows his incompetence. Orkin informed me that the product they installed is an energy star product and stated it will run longer than 2 hours per day. They have been very professional in resolving any and all issues I have had with their sealing of my crawl space and I am receiving the desired results. Lucas has ignored my requests to advise of next steps and actions to resolve the issues with the attic and had the nerve to inform me that the humidity levels in the crawl space would result in mold in the crawl space even though he has nothing to do with the crawl space and is trying to degrade the work Orkin performed. . Orkin has adjusted the dehumidifier and will continue to address and adjust as needed. The installation of the dehumidifier had nothing to do with Lucas? proposal for a 20% cost savings in the utility bills for my house; he never mentioned one and his only solution was lowering the thermostats to remove some of the humidity levels. The claim he has made is very unprofessional and reflects his incompetence in the type of work he is doing. I have sent e-mails asking if additional information was needed from me such as utility bills, humidity level readings, so far; I have expressed desire and willingness to work with him in reaching a solution to the problem. He has not expressed any desire to do not one thing other than continue referring to the energy consumed by the dehumidifier installed by Orkin which essentially helped to resolve the problem he said was the reason the temperatures were higher on the second level of the house. UPDATE: Lucas Spencer's response contains lies and false statements. First of all, he told me before and after the installation of the materials in the attic that he guaranteed a 20% cost savings in my energy bill (which is why I decided to use him instead of another business owner) and a warranty of 25 years on all of the materials. There were not two other companies who sealed the crawl space. Orkin, a very reputable company who has stood by their work, sealed the crawl space and corrected and addressed each of the issues and concerns I requested. He is not aware of how they sealed it and sent them a bunch of questions regarding their work that they refused to answer. The work performed by Orkin lowered the humidity levels in the crawl space and on the inside of the house--corrected the problem he stated was the reason there was so much heat on the second level of my house.. As soon as I informed him that the humidity levels were reduced in the house due to the sealing of the crawl space and the installation of the dehumidifier, he offered no further solutions to resolving his guarantee of 20% cost savings in my electric bill and began saying that the electricity used by the dehumidifier would consume the cost savings. Orkin sent him an e-mail indicating that this was not true. I am recording the amounts of my utility bills and will send this information to all the other organizations I am going to contact regarding the work he performed in my attic. As you are aware, one can find information on the internet to support any opinion which is why I refused to review what he sent me. I was kind enough to inform him that the humidity levels were down in the house since he stated this was the problem and even sent the information he requested on the make and model number of the dehumidifier--then he used this information to not take any further steps to resolve the issue related to the work he performed after he promised that he would work with me to resolve the issues. He is the most crooked business person I have ever dealt with. He has not taken one step to work with me and kept insisting that the dehumidifier used all of the cost savings. He used this as a way not to deal with the issues he created at my house, and I will not stop until I get a resolution in which he will be held accountable by refunding my money or correcting the problems he created. I plan to contact each of the organizations you sent me in reference to this complaint and will get the information and all of the e-mails exchanged in the mail this week and all the information he forwarded to me regarding humidity levels in the mail this week. I filed a dispute with my credit card company and will contact them for documentation regarding his assurance to me of resolving the problem which is the reason I closed my case with the credit company.
Description of Work: The company sealed the attic in my home by adding additional insulation in all areas where possible and added radiant barrier in the attic area where plywood flooring was installed. They also applied a highly reflective IRCC paint to the ceiling of the attic and sealed all vents and ducts to make sure no air or heat would escape. I spoke with Lucas Spencer, owner of Key Energy Solutions, last summer in reference to ceiling the attic in my two story house. He assured me he would do a good job and I would be satisfied and guaranteed a 20% cost savings (reduction in my utility bills) and a 25-year warranty on the materials at a cost of $2,679.00. He also stated that my house would have snow on the roof in the winter longer than any house in the neighborhood because no heat would escape through the roof from the attic area. This was not the case! The date scheduled for the work to be performed was July 10, 2012 and Lucas showed up on that date between 8:00 –9:00 am along with two college students. The work consisted of blowing insulation into all areas of the attic where possible, installing radiant barrier over the plywood in the storage area and painting the ceiling with a special type silver paint. Overall the work progressed well and completed much quicker than I expected—the job was completed by lunch time. I paid Lucas by credit card and he signed and provided me with a statement of the warranty for the work performed. Within a day or so after the work was completed, I quickly observed that the area on the second level felt much warmer and felt like there was a heater in the ceiling disbursing heat. I contacted Lucas after a few days and he came out to inspect the attic and informed me that all the vents were unsealed. I informed him that I had the vents cleaned by a company but did not think the work they performed would unseal the areas around the vents and hose connections. He used some material and a brush to reseal all of the vent/hose connections in the attic and left the materials with me and asked that I go into the attic to apply more of the material when the areas he resealed were dry. I did as he had requested in sealing the areas. He also informed me that the temperature in the attic area was 3-4 degrees lower than it was in the upstairs area. He expressed major concerns as to why the attic area was cooler than the second story area and indicated that he had never experienced this scenario and would begin researching, talking to experts in the field and collecting data from the attic and second story area to provide information that would be helpful in diagnosing the problems to ensure the 20% cost savings. He installed the data collectors in the attic and second story area and waited two-three weeks become coming back out. After coming out to collect the data, he sent me e-mails with attachments to show the humidity levels in the house and stated that the high humidity levels were the problem. He insisted that I turn the thermostats down to enable the A/C units to run longer to lower the humidity levels in the house. I informed him that I always maintained the thermostats around the 76-78 levels and was comfortable with these settings and had reasonable utility bills. I shared this with him on his initial visit to discuss his solution for a more energy efficient home. He insisted that lowering the thermostats would resolve the problems; however, I reminded him that I informed him during the initial meeting that I set the thermostats at a level that resulted in a comfort level in the house suitable for me along with reasonable utility bills. There was no mention that any time that I should lower the thermostat levels until I told him that the second story level was much warmer and he indicated that the high humidity levels were a problem. Meanwhile, I contacted my credit card company to open a dispute after I paid the credit card bill that included the cost to seal the attic. While Lucas assured me that he would work with me until the problem was resolved, I wanted to have a means to protect my investment in case he did not. I instructed the credit card company not to contact Lucas regarding the dispute because he was working with me and while he had stated on several occasions that he would do whatever was necessary to resolve the issues, I did not wish to have them to intervene as long as he was working with me. However, the credit card company called me in late Fall to inform me that they would have to close the dispute if I did not want them to contact Lucas. I asked them to allow me time to contact Lucas regarding his promise to work with me until the problems were resolved. I called Lucas and asked him if he was going to continue to work with me regarding the problems with the higher than normal temperatures in the attic until the problems were resolved and he assured me that he would. I did not inform him that I had opened a dispute with the credit card company because he promised he would continue working on the problem until I was satisfied and received the 20% cost savings. Based on his promise, I called the credit card company back and told them Lucas had promised me he would resolve all issues related to this case and they could close the case. By this time the summer temperatures had subsided and he removed the data collectors with a promise to resume his work on identifying the problems in the spring/summer when warmer temperatures resumed. Prior to contracting with Key Energy Solutions to seal the attic, I had spoken with two other contractors regarding sealing the attic. When I discussed their solutions with Lucas, he informed me that his approach was a far better solution. I had further discussions with one of the contractors regarding sealing my crawl space but decided to hold off since I had spent $2,679 on the contract with Key Energy Solutions which had not resulted in the guaranteed results. This contractor called me back in mid October and informed me that they would give me a discount if I would agree to have them to seal the crawl space before year end. I asked them to provide me the discounted price; they called me back and provided the revised contract price, so I decided to have them to perform the work.

Response from Key Energy Solutions
I am willing to provide information. (Member name) has escalated this beyond my ability to placate her. We will not offer a refund. I no longer believe this issue can be resolved as (member name) First I want to explain more about what happened in (member name)’s home. The work we did on 7/10/12 (Installing an IRCC paint, adding R-19 insulation to her attic, and sealing up air infiltration sites in her attic), did exactly as we wanted. It lowered the temperatures in the attic, created better “heat barrier” between the attic and the living space of her home and allowed her HVAC to reduce runtime. The problem with all of this was that because of the design of (member name)’s HVAC (Single Stage Blower) the systems reduced runtime was properly keeping the temperature of the house but it did not allow enough runtime to dehumidify the air. This build of humidity is what caused her to feel uncomfortable and become frustrated. Shortly after we had completed our work she had also hired two separate and independent companies to do additional work on her home. She did this on her own without our knowledge. In August of 2012 (Member name) contacted me and complained of her home being too hot in the second story. I returned to look things over. During my initial inspection, I found that the air ducts connecting to her air handler were not properly sealed. This is when I learned she had hired a contractor to clean her air ducts. My thoughts were that the gentleman who cleaned her ducts had not properly re-sealed them not allowing enough of the conditioned air to reach the interior of her home. For this reason, even though we had nothing to do with the air ducts, I returned to re-seal, free of charge, (Member name)’s air ducts. Sometime later (Member name) expressed to me that the problem persisted and so we began the process of using temperature and humidity data loggers to track and understand what was happening. This was Sept/Oct of 2012, we concluded, after analyzing the data, that the humidity was the culprit of her discomfort. To help find remedy for this situation I spoke with the company who installed her HVAC and discussed it with my peers within the energy efficiency community. (Member name) and I then discussed some of the possible solutions in Sept/Oct of 2012. Unfortunately, by this time the fall temperatures had set in and we would not be able to get good accurate readings for summertime temperatures so we opted to do more research in the spring. About this time is also when (Member name) informed me that Orkin had done extensive work in her crawlspace. They installed a dehumidifier and re-installed the crawlspace insulation. This totally changed the dynamic of the humidity levels and electricity usage in (member name)’s home. Although the dehumidifier would lower the humidity levels in her home it would also significantly raise her electric bills. Furthermore Orkin re-installed the insulation in the crawlspace which will change the dynamic of heat flow from the crawl to the living space. From the information I have Orkin replaced her R-19 batt insulation with new R-19 batt insulation. I have tried to explain to (Member name) how big these changes are but she refuses to thoroughly read my emails or listen to me when we last spoke. She claims I am uneducated in the realm of energy efficiency because I emailed her thorough explanations with references and links to additional and independent information on the internet. I sent these items so that she was not just taking my word for it, but had additional independent information. At this point I have no way to placate (Member name). The decision to have two different contractors do additional work has changed the dynamic in her homes energy usage, but she continues to claim I owe her money. I have never made a promise to guarantee a specific amount of savings on any electric bill. It is out of my realm of control. A home owner could add a new electric appliance, watch more TV, electric rates could rise, or there could be unusually hot or cold weather, any of these could drastically change monthly electric bills. What happened at (Member name)’s is a perfect example of this. Two separate companies did work that have had effects on her homes energy efficiency. How can I guarantee something I have no control over? I have tried hard to take care of (Member name) but she feels the need to attack me personally and disregards much what I try to explain to her. I do not have any ideas on what else can be done to help her.

We have a 2-story home with two a/c and heating units (one on each floor.) It is hard for the 2nd floor unit to keep upstairs cool in summer and it also stays cooler in Winter than we like. We got estimates from two different companies. From the start, Lucas from Key Energy Solutions stood out. He came to the house and spent about an HOUR measuring and calculating up in our attic to see what would be the best solution for us. Key Energy Solutions gave us FOUR separate options, all very detailed, and also based on how long we wanted to stay in this house, and how much we wanted to spend. He spent a great deal of time discussing each one, the pros and cons of each one, and we never got the feeling of being pressured into a higher cost solution. This guy seemed refreshingly HONEST!!! We did have someone else come out and do an estimate, who spent about 1/4 of the time Lucas did, who didn't explain everything as clearly as he did, and was about twice as expensive as Key Energy Solutions. The other guy's least expensive option left off the radiant barrier, and when we asked about that, they said it would be $500 more!!! Needless to say, we decided on Key Energy Solutions. We just got a good feeling about them from the time spent with us, and Lucas' obvious knowledge of what he was doing.By the day of installation, we were supposed to have most everything moved out of the attic to make the installation of the radiant barrier easier for them. Unfortunately, my husband got sick 2 days before the work was to be done, and there were a few shelves and heavier pieces up there. No complaints from Lucas, he and his partner moved them and did a great job. They cleaned up everything afterwards and you would never know they had been in the house. We recommend them highly. They are knowledgeable, honest and do a thorough good job! Their website: www.keyenergync.com
Description of Work: Installed blow-in insulation between the rafters in the floor of our attic, where the attic isn't floored. Installed radiant barrier on the floored part of the attic.
