David has always been responsive, helpful, and prompt. In fact, this morning, he called to say he could come a little bit early--which worked perfectly with the contractor's schedule. More importantly, he is (rightfully!!) proud of the amendment material he creates. I was a bit skeptical last year (not knowing him), but when I used his stuff on my first attempt at "no till" gardening in my vegetable patch, I was amazed at the results. Frankly, I am flummoxed by the one "D" rating some disgruntled person has posted on this site. I've recommended him to several friends, and would do so again without hesitation.

I have used soil builders for several years running as a source of topsoil and mulch for my home in NE Portland. They deliver quickly and with no hassle, and the product is great. I particularly like their "Our Best Garden Soil" product. There is a 3 yard minimum for delivery, so your needs have to be significant to make it worthwhile.

I have used them in the past and will continue to do so!

I would give them an A. The compost they delivered was excellent. They are one of the best.

A few years ago I asked Dave if he had any good clean rock/weed free fill dirt as we had some low areas that we wanted to fill in. He said he didn't have any but recommended someone out of the Camas area. We gave this fellow a call and he came with a huge truck and wanted to be paid before he dumped his load. I couldn't see what was in the truck but because this fellow was recommended by Dave I gave him the check and told him to go ahead and dump it. I immediately saw that the dirt was riddled with fist-sized (and larger) pieces of rock, concrete and old asphalt. I contacted the DEQ and other state offices but was told that rock, concrete and asphalt did not necessarily mean it was contaminated. We felt it was unusable and it cost us a $1,000.00 to have it loaded onto another truck and moved out of our yard. I called Dave Cox and told him that we were very unhappy with this guy and he should never recommend him again. Dave apologized and we continued to buy product from him. This year, however, the mulch that we bought from his company, Soil Builders, was full of bits of metal, string, wire, plastic and broken glass. It was horrible. I called and told Dave how awful it was but he did not seem too concerned, telling me that from time to time he gets stuff from others and it has a bit of "junk" in it. The president of our local garden club also bought mulch from Dave this year and she described it as being the same way ours was. She said she will never buy mulch or compost from him again.
