Tom, the President of the company was both my installer and estimator. I really liked that the same person who did the estimate was also the person to do the install, this meant there would be no surprises when the job started. I also like that Tom is a licensed plumber and not a technician. When Tom came to give me the estimate, he was on time, and prepared. He took a walk through my house, asked a few questions about what I was looking for and presented me a recommend tankless model. He also briefly talked about other models from different manufacturers. His estimate was clear and broken out with the various options that I had asked about (such as replacing my main shutoff valve). On installation day Tom maintained his high level of communication, calling me as he was enroute to give me an updated time of arrival. He was on time. Tom came with an assistant, Josh, both were extremely professional on site and happy to answer my many questions. I really appreciated the level of cleanliness they demonstrated, they cleaned as they went, leaving the various rooms in great shape and careful to protect my brand new basement carpet. The actual installation of the tankless unit was without incident and it works perfectly. When the installation was finished, Tom walked me through the functionality of the unit. For my rental house, I asked Tom to bid on the project looking at a cell phone photo of the old tank. When he got to the site, we both realized that I didn't have the standard tall size tank and instead had a "short" tank. This was at 4:00 PM, Tom immediately called his supplier and had them put the short size tank in their lot for him as they closed at 4:30. I was impressed he was able to get the tank from his supplier even though they were closed, unfortunately, the supplier left the wrong kind of water heater (an electric instead of a gas). Tom called me when he found the mistake and offered to drive to a different distributor to get the right tank that night, this would have required the manager of that store reopening after hours to get the tank. I didn't want to inconvenience my tenants and instead Tom came the next day and swapped the tank out in less than 90 minutes. Further, the new tank was installed properly where the old one wasn't, secured to a wall and pushed out of the way to increase space in the rental basement. I was really impressed with Tom's commitment to customer service and his dedication to doing the job right. The price of the tank heater was the lowest of the 5 bids that I received and his pricing for the tankless water heater was not the lowest but competitive. Certainly fair for work being done by a licensed plumber as opposed to an installer.
Description of Work: Installed a tankless water heater in my primary residence and a conventional tank water heater in a rental property. Tankless install required moving water lines, decommissioning ventilation and extending a gas line. They also replaced my water main shutoff.

They knew exactly what they were doing. They were experts in that area. I really liked that when you call them and ask them for something else because I had another plumbing job recently that I was going to call and have them do and they said I would be better off going to this other company. They were willing to tell me that they were not going to take a little job to do something and gave me somebody else that would be more appropriate for the job that I needed done.

Really easy to talk to on phone and email. Staff seemed really nice on the phone. Answered most of my question on the phone and responsive via email. They came by installed the water heater, earthquake strap and expansion tank. Made sure it worked and then took the old one away. They came with two techs witch seemed to make it easy to remove and install the new one. Both were really nice guys and did a great job. I would hire them again. I think they do contract work for Sears. They are not pushy and only do the work that you want to do. So if you want it to code they'll do it but if you don't want the expansion tank they'll also respect that and won't install it.

Everything went perfectly. My previous water heater had broken. I called Washington Water Heaters on Wednesday and they came and installed a new one the next day. They took away the old one and left the work area tidy. The technician was on time and did the work within the time they estimated. I especially appreciated they confirmed the model type and location of old water heater so they could be sure to install an appropriate model. I don't know if I could have gotten a better price. I didn't have time to shop around. But, the office staff was wonderful and didn't pressure me to make a quick decision. I could have shopped around. I would definitely use them again.

This was an install of a replacement electric water heater bought at Lowes and installed by Washington Water Heater (install setup by Lowes). The bottomline is the LABOR cost was $800 for 2 hours work. I don't see anything wrong with the work performed but Lowes and/or Washington Water Heaters seriously gouged me on labor. The bill detailed out every last part included in the install and was charged separately from the labor so I am strictly talking labor here. When I ordered the water heater at Lowes I was asked MANY questions about my install situation and they included a large list of add-on parts and corresponding labor. No one from Lowes or Washington Water Heaters ever informed me there might be additional parts/labor and I would have never thought so since I was already asked so many questions and charged for so many nit picky parts and corresponding labor when I placed the order. But when the Washington Water Heater installer arrived he immediately said there would be add-on charges since the existing water heater lines were not at the needed height for this water heater. I notified him that no one from Lowes or Washington Water Heater informed me of this; he said he was quite surprised by it and would talk to people. Of the $800 labor I paid $250 of it was added on at the job site to install two elbows and about 12" of copper pipe bringing the labor total to $800. There was one installer and he finished the job within 2 hours. In addition to the labor pricing, he lost points with me because when we were discussing this situation he would not let me talk and kept talking over me, very rude and hardly what I'd think appropriate from an installer. Tell me if $400 per hour is a fair labor price to install a water heater? I don't think so and therefore would never use Lowes or Washington Water Heater ever again. The water heater was just installed today and all looks fine as far as I can tell, ratings reflect this, my beef is the labor price

Response from Washington Water Heaters
It sounds like you have a beef with Lowe's, but you're taking it out on Washington Water Heaters. First off, Washington Water Heaters has nothing to do with pricing as quoted by Lowe's . We simply do their installations and install the items that you bought from them. The Heat Pump style water heater that you purchased normally requires an in home estimate or "Detail" which is done on a separate trip. The detail would have identified everything that would be required, and you would have had the exact cost before you decided to purchase or not. For whatever reason, you declined to have the detail done. When a detail is not done in advance, it is then our responsibility to do a "job site survey" upon arrival, and identify any additional items or tasks that need to be completed in order to do the work to the current code standard. Anything that is quoted to you beyond what you were quoted by Lowe's is discussed with you IN ADVANCE, and your approval to continue is obtained before we do any work. This allows you one final opportunity to cancel the job if you aren't happy with the final cost. Had you decided not to proceed with the installation, we would have left and you would have paid zero. Not having us do the detail in advance actually saved you $50.00. Your statement of not being informed by anyone that there could be other charges is simply untrue. You signed a contract at Lowe's where it specifically states that the installer will discuss any other items / tasks that need to be done in the course of this job, and that you would be responsible for the additional costs associated with those tasks. You signed acknowledgement of that possibility. Secondly, when our office staff member talked to you when scheduling this job, he specifically told you that there is the possibility of additional charge items, ESPECIALLY with the heat pump style water heater that you purchased. Then, Tom went over the pricing with you and had you sign his Change Order agreeing to the additional cost BEFORE he started the job. As for your comment regarding $800 for 2 hours or work, this too is inaccurate. Although Tom is a skilled and efficient licensed plumber, he spent closer to 4 hours total on your particular job. Drive time, picking up the equipment, disposing of the old equipment, clean up, etc, not to mention the time spent by the office staff adds to the total cost of doing business and must be factored into the cost of any project. Tom did in fact complete the installation duties in about 2 hours, but as noted here, there is more to a job than the time spent turning wrenches. As for the additional tasks that Tom charged you for, he did minor plumbing modifications, added a new full port shut off valve, ran the condensation drain line to the drain, and installed bracing behind the water heater. He did all this for $250.00. None of these tasks are part of the basic installation labor you paid up front. You agreed to the cost of these additional tasks before Tom started the job. Finally, your comments about Tom being rude to you and not allowing you to talk are confusing at best. Tom went way above and beyond to help you understand things that you were unsure of. He even called Lowe's on your behalf and advised them that they had sold you an item that you didn't need, and asked them to refund you 100% for that item. If you take a look at the numerous reviews Washington Water Heaters has here on Angie's List, you will find many that refer to Tom as nothing but helpful, professional, and a skilled craftsman. We are a 7 time Super Service Award winner. A company has to work hard to earn that award, and very few contractors have earned it 7 years in a row. I think the record will show that we do everything in our power to please our customers.

They needed to order a new part from the manufacturer since they did not have it in stock. There was a problem with getting the part shipped from the manufacturer, but it finally arrived. This was not an urgent problem because we have a dual water heater configuration in our house. Steve came out the next day and installed the new thermocouple and the water heart works great. I am a happy camper.

Could not ask for any better service.
Description of Work: My water temperature started fluctuating and I called on my 2 year old tankless water heater. They came out and completed a descaling but it did not correct the problem. When I called them back they informed me I would not be charged another service call and would come out to diagnose the problem. After numerous visits over a month period one including the mfg rep they were able to determine it was the circuit board and once replaced all is working as it should. They worked with my schedule and most appts were done on Saturdays. In addition, I was not charged for any of the visits, labor or parts. I appreciate that Steve took so much of his time with me and believed me when I told him it was still not working. The problem was frustrating but no fault of theirs and the service of this company made it bearable. I will easily refer this company to anyone and will use them in the future for additional work. A+ company and Staff.

Woke up this morning to take a shower, and the water wasn't warming up. So I went to my basement and there was water everywhere. I called Washington Water Heaters about 8:30 am, and they sent someone out within the hour. I was thinking I wanted a tankless heater, and he advised me that they could do it, but since my house is brick and concrete, the cost would be pretty high since they'd have to drill through it to add a vent. I decided on a normal replacement water heater, and he got to work right away draining my old heater and installing the new one with earthquake braces.

I could not have been more pleased with the entire transaction. I sent an e-mail inquiry, and got a phone call within 10 minutes. Steve took a lot of time to talk about the pros and cons of tankless versus storage tank heaters, without any effort to persuade me one way or the other. When we finished the conversation he said he'd check on scheduling an estimate, and I got a second call within 30 minutes setting up a time. They gave me a two-hour window for the estimate, and Steve arrived about 15 minutes into the window. As before, he took plenty of time to discuss our alternatives without any pressure. The next morning I got an e-mail estimate. We made our decision, and scheduled the installation for Friday the 29th. On Monday Steve called to say that the person he wanted to do the installation was not available on Friday, and to ask if it would be possible to do it earlier in the week. That worked for me, so we moved the appointment up to Wednesday. The installer called to tell me he was running a little late, but he ended up getting there only about 15 minutes past the appointed time. When I got the estimate they told me it would take about 3 hours to replace both heaters; it actually took about 3 hours and 10 minutes. The main reason they took longer than expected was that they had to make some alterations to where the side vent went out through the cement foundation wall. The bill amount was exactly what they had said it would be. When they were done the old heaters were gone, the room was cleaned up, and you would never have known anyone had been there. Everyone I dealt with was very professional and very friendly. As I said, this was as good a business experience as one could hope to have. I will definitely use them again if the need arises, and I would not hesitate to recommend them.

I sent an email request to find out if they could install a Rheem water heater as the one I had was 20 years old and still working fine. I knew it was just a matter of time and it would fail. Since the last one worked for so many years I wanted a same, brand and model number knowing that manufactures make cheaper units for home stores I didn't want to be switched into a cheap model. I received a quote via email back within an hour and they said they could have it ready to install in one day! (they were not listed on Rheem's site as a stocking distributor). After seeing other horror stories with other companies, I decided price wasn't going to be the deciding the factor, but the professional response so quickly and the other reviews on Angie's and other sites, it was going to be Washington Water Heater. The tech was a really nice guy, did his thing and knocked on the door about 40 minutes later. He said he was finished, but....So I took a look and he said that he forgot to install the second anode in it for the extra years worth of warranty that I purchased. Since he would have to partially uninstall, and I needed to get back to work, we agreed he would come back that night to complete. He showed back up after dinner time to do the quick install of the anode and then we did the paperwork. It was very comforting that he didn't present the bill to be paid before he put the second anode in, so I trusted he would come back that night. In today's world it made me feel like we both were honest people and we both would do as expected in the situation. Kind of refreshing, to many contractors are slimy and want money before doing work. As a business owner, I took note of how their employees are professional, quick and nice to deal with, making sure my staff do the same for our customers. Thank you!

On arriving at the condo the technician walked through exactly what he would need to replace. While many companies suggested that you replace the expansion tank at the same time, I was pleasantly surprised that the technician didn't attempt to pressure me into getting a new one. He let me know that the current one I had was working perfectly fine and could continue using it. While I ended up having them replace it anyway, I appreciate his honesty and the sense that he wasn't trying to throw on additional charges. Everything was installed in a couple of hours and after the installation, he again walked me through everything he had done. While they weren't the cheapest estimate I got, I was more comfortable knowing that Washington Water Heaters were upfront and clear through the entire process.

Although it wasn't an emergency, I called them on a Saturday or Sunday. They just had someone answering phones. They spent a bunch of time with me talking about options for replacement water heaters. When I told them I wanted to have them replace mine, they said they would have someone call me back on Monday to schedule the work. Sure enough, first thing Monday they called, and they were able to come by the same day. A couple of hours, in an out. The guy did his work, took out the old water heater, installed the new one, and left the place tidy and clean. A week or two later, I called them back because I thought something might be wrong. The guy came the same day, checked everything out, and explained some things about the heater that I didn't know before. He was patient and professional in his explanations, and he told us to not hesitate to call them back if I had any future worries. All in all, I was very impressed by the professionalism and attitude of everyone I had contact with.

They replaced my water heater (14 years old), which had some backdrafting issues. I liked that they sought pictures beforehand, to make efficient use of time. They had noted the possibility of needing to build up a half-wall in the foundation for earthquake strapping, but didn't have wood/etc with them to do that. Fortunately, I had sufficient spare wood, or else it would have had to have been rescheduled. Some plumbing "hammer" occurred, which they came out today to correct, essentially in the next available non-emergency/after hours slot. Decent price--there were others cheaper, but the flexibility of install hours, quality of service, and after care made this a great choice. Solid firm, great customer service, timeliness, etc.

My 3 year old AO Smith Vertex water heater started leaking on Sunday. Called Washington Water Heaters, but got no response that day, despite their website claiming 7 days a week service. my water heater provides heat for the home, so it was somewhat urgent. Called on Monday and they had someone out on time that morning. Verified it was covered under warranty, managed to find a replacement in stock, and returned later that afternoon to replace it. Len did a great job managing all the details and ensuring everything worked out for me in the end. While the tank was covered, the labor was not. I'm not happy about paying to have a water heater replaced only 3 years later, but I understand the company's stance - they installed it properly, it was the tank that failed. Everything else about the experience was great and painless.

When our 10 year old water heater finally died, we were, naturally, very anxious to get a new one installed asap. We had done our homework and knew what type and brand of appliance would best suit our needs. After phoning 5 Angie's List rated companies, we chose Washington Water Heaters. They offered a clear, straight-forward, estimate. The installers arrived promptly the following day, were professional and very competent. They did not try to up-sell us on additional parts, warranties or services.

We selected WA Water Heaters because they not only clearly knew what they were doing, talked intelligently to us about trade-offs, but they also had the best price of four bids total. While their bias was to sell us a tankless system, there wasn't any pressure there and what the plumbing they did will be necessary down the road anyway if we later go tankless. The fellow that installed the system (Tom) was a bit late due I think to weather (?) but he called well in advance and this was no problem for us. He was just excellent --- did good work, was clear on what he was doing and how things worked, absolutely no hesitation on our part to use this company again should we need this sort of work done. Cleanup was done well, it was all about as painless as possible, and at what we felt was a good total price.
Description of Work: We had two water heaters in our house in a somewhat complicated arrangement. Service was to remove and dispose of an old heater, connect the two water heater locations with a hot water line so that a single heater would serve the entire house, and install a recirculating pump to deliver hot water more quickly at remote locations in the house.

Our water heater stopped heating water two days before Thanksgiving. Washington Water Heaters came out the next day and, after determining our was not repairable, installed a new water heater. The only minor problem we encountered is that the technician did not arrive during the original window. We called to ask about it and were told he was held up at another job. As it was the day before Thanksgiving, I figure they were trying to squeeze people in so that no one would be without hot water on the holiday. Once he arrived, the tech was knowledgeable, friendly and very efficient. We would definitely use Washington Water Heaters again, and highly recommend them.

This is my second experience with Washington Water Heaters, the first being to install a new water heater. I had a question about that heater and asked if they also did other types of residential plumbing, to which Jackie replied yes and quickly scheduled me for the work. Len and another plumber came out and finished the work quickly, answering my questions along the way, all in under an hour. The prices are a little higher than I would prefer, but the workmanship and professionalism are top-notch and negate any worry about quality or warranty. I'll be calling them to come out to replace a few more shut-off valves in the near future. Note: Both plumbers were friendly with my curious and friendly dog and were careful to remove their shoes, unprompted, in the entry before going across carpet each time they came inside. These details are very important to me.

I was able to get a complete quote over the phone and schedule the installation within just a few days. My only constructive criticism is that it was a little difficult to go through the different model options over the phone when trying to find the most energy efficient tank-based water heater (i.e. power vent). It would have been nice to be able to view the different model options on their website. If you're looking for a like-for-like installation, it's the quickest and most convenient method of getting a water heater replaced. The installation was painless, professional, and very quick.

We arrived home late at night to find our 13 year old water heater leaking. Next morning I called Washington Water Heaters, and made an appointment for that afternoon. Just wanted to replace it with the same size and type; they did not try to upsell, but did tell me they would have to increase the earthquake strapping, since code had changed since it was installed. (really no problem - there was an Angie's List coupon for free strapping!). Also, they warned me that the little tank above (controls water pressure or some such) would likely also need replaced, but they wouldn't know until they could test it. Quoted me a price for the water heater, and a price for the little tank. Not surprisingly, the little tank proved to have also exceeded it's lifetime (they showed me how it had failed). The final price charged was exactly what they had quoted over the phone (plus tax, of course). They arrived on time (at the beginning of the time window they had said), were neat and professional, and didn't mind my asking lots of questions. Really nice guys. And now we have hot water without sharing it with the garage.
Description of Work: Replaced old water heater with comparable new one, and replaced pressure tank above. Put in new code-compatible earthquake strapping.

My townhouse was built around 12 years ago and the water heater was finally giving out/being unreliable so it was time to get it replaced. It was a natural gas combo unit that provided hot water to the house and hooked into the central air heating system. It was also in a tight spot in the garage so I knew I was facing a more expensive than normal unit and installation. I got quotes from multiple vendors that had good ratings on Angie's list and decided based on cost and feel of working with them, that Washington Water Heaters was my best choice. Their tech was really good. The install proved to be even more challenging than anticipated and I got my hands dirty a bit helping out with the install, but I didn't mind. The unit has been working like a champ since installation. I would strongly recommend Washington Water Heaters. They do great work.

They used a part that I already had and I asked them to reorder the part and they have not done so. It has been over a year and I have called several times and they do not return calls. The technician had to be walked through replacing the coupler over the phone by another employee. Do not use their service.
Description of Work: They replaced a coupler in a water pump.

I called to get an estimate of total costs. The person on the phone would not send someone to do an estimate, despite the fact there are several "not sure" issues on what the requirements would be. It was "take our guess estimate" not including earthquake strap, expansion tank, or pan, and have the person come out for an install. I ask twice to have someone come out and give an estimate and I only received run-around from the individual. The price was close to another pre-estimate, however they were unwilling to come out and discuss the final costs. The were also unsure how to apply any discounts or coupons from Angie's List, and only when pinned down did they say they would do Angie's List discounts from their page. The conversation was a bit friendly, however, left me feeling like it was schedule to buy or nothing. We were leaning toward using them until I had the conversation and felt there might be add on's that were not being discussed. Also no mention of possible permitting. Just a fast sell and that's all. When I said I'd get back to them, they hung up, just as I was trying to say thank you for your help. Not planning to use them for these reasons

Response from Washington Water Heaters
It is true that we don't drive around giving estimates on tank replacements. We can do that with 99% accuracy over the phone. A customer is always protected though, because when we do arrive to do the install, we will survey the situation, and provide a firm price to do all the work required before we start any work. If a customer doesn't like our price, then we leave with no charge to the customer. We work on the honor system with the agreement that if we do provide a satisfactory price, that we begin the work immediately. This is how we can keep our prices down. As for discounts, our Customer Service Rep did tell you about our Angie's List discounts, and offered them to you. I did use this situation to point out to our CSR's how perception can vary, and how to better communicate with our customers.
