A salesman, John, came out and was incredibly aggressive about the process. He was at pains to not only describe how excellent RBA is but also how awful their competitors are, especially Milgard Windows, who he badmouthed at length. Some of the windows in our house were replaced a few years ago by Milgard. He examined each of these and described their defects in a way that, I guess, was intended to make me think their installation and quality are so incorrect at to warrant replacement. Then he proceeded to describe the additional trim work that is available from RBA at extra cost (I am referring to the wood molding that would go around a window on the inside of the house). He explained the options and the extra cost, which is significant. Then he told me to think of this extra wood work as "furniture for your walls." That line right there almost made the whole process worthwhile: it is probably one of the most inane things I have ever heard somebody say. I have repeated that line to everybody in the neighborhood so many times, and we've all laughed at this clown so often, that it makes me glad to have met him. Seriously, can you imagine the focus group they must have run to come up with that kind of a line? That's what they think resonates with people? Then the salesman began describing his prowess and aggressiveness on the basketball court, with special emphasis on how he's 'the one you don't want to mess with.' As he said this rocked back and forth on his feet and looked me up and down, as if challenging me to both deny his sports abilities and his furniture for the walls. Really, I felt like he was trying to bully me. In the end he sent me a quote for about $24,000 for the windows. We got a quote from Milgard for less than $13,000 and that's who we chose. Less than two weeks later RBA contacted me again and said they could do it for $18k; then a little while after that they wanted to do it for about $16k. More than a year after I talked to this guy he called me yet again and wanted to know what our status was. It was great to hear the desperation in his voice. At least he's still got the basketball court. The Milgard windows are terrific. I would recommend them in a heartbeat, and I would use Milgard again if I needed windows. I would avoid RBA completely. If you do have RBA out for a bid then I highly recommend you get at least one other quote. They are unnecessarily expensive.
Description of Work: We asked Renewal by Andersen (RBA) to come out and give us a bid on new windows for our house. We did not select them to do the work. Ordinarily I would not write a review about a company that only gave me a bid, but I think the salesperson was so bizarre that it bears reviewing here so others are aware of it.

We had three visits with Anderson Renewal: 1. they came to our home to access our current situation and consult on products that would work for what we wanted. We were able to decide on a path at that meeting and scheduled the next visit, a technical measure. 2. Anderson Renewal called to set up the technical measure and lead paint testing. The technician was very prompt, personable, and professional and completed the measuring quickly. From this point it is a wait for manufacturing. We were quoted 4-6 weeks for installing the windows. 3. The final meeting was the actual install of the windows. There was a snafu with our initial installation date - my husband was home for most of the day waiting for the install team but they ended up getting hung up on their first job of the day which took much more time than they expected. While disappointing, Anderson Renewal was very proactive with staying in touch on the progress and very accommodating in scheduling an updated time for the installation. On the rescheduled day the team arrived on time and completed the work within the quoted time frame. They did an excellent job with the install (including replacing 3 sills) and cleaning up. We will definitely use them again and plan to replace more windows. They are not inexpensive but we are very pleased with the product and the service.
Description of Work: Anderson Renewal consulted with us to replace windows in our 1923 home. We have all wood windows and did not want to convert to vinyl but wanted a solution that would hold up better than wood. Anderson Renewal has great products and informed salespeople who helped us make decisions on what we wanted.

I was doing some yard work & a rock flew from the lawn mower & cracked the outer surface of my picture window, so I needed a new one. I saw the deal from Renewal by Anderson & decided to give it try. It had been many years since I've purchased new windows, so I learned quite a bit form the Anderson rep. I decided to go with a picture window with sliding windows on the sides. I paid extra over the $1,000 value but it was well worth it, I really like the new window. The rep was professional and the installers as well, I was really happy with the experience. I will look to Renewal by Anderson in the future.

I got the "Big Deal" coupon where I paid $200 for $1000 credit for windows. I figured that for 3 windows that would be around a 30% savings (without doing any homework beforehand, my mistake, I just assumed any replacement window couldn't possibly be more than $1000). They have a minimum order of 3 windows, and the 3 windows came to about $6000, so about $5200 out-of-pocket after using the coupon. The windows are great, the service was great. I do LOVE the windows, but I still haven't gotten over the cost. The two awning windows are, I think, more of a specialty window (more $$), but were what I needed for that corner because it's a long reach to open/close a slider window there. These particular windows get the brunt of the sun in the summer, so I'm glad to have good quality ones. But I will probably go with a less expensive option for replacing the remainder of my windows. In addition, while they were there, they looked at the installation I had my deck contractor do of two sets of Renewal By Andersen French Doors several years ago. (Apparently these are the only types of windows/doors that RBA lets others install). They commented that my contractor built a wonderful deck, but clearly didn't know all the details of proper installation of the French doors. They repaired some missing calking and re-leveled the doors at no cost to me, just because they wanted their product to have a better installation. Price was my only issue, and maybe if I had done some homework ahead of time to find out what windows cost these days, I wouldn't have been so shell-shocked by the cost. The quality of the windows and all of the service was EXCELLENT.
Description of Work: Measured and installed 3 replacement windows, removed and hauled away old windows. One 35-inch double hung in family room, two 48x48 awning windows in kitchen corner. All three windows are Low-E4 glass. They also inspected the installation of two RBA French Doors that I had a contractor install several years ago, and they repaired the calking around them and re-leveled them.

Very well. Salesperson and installers were on time and pleasant to work with. We had some leaking issues that we had hoped could be fixed by the installers, but they weren't able to do so, but helped us to figure out who we needed to call to make sure things were tight. We're having seven more windows replaced this fall. When the tech measurement guy came for this new batch of windows, we discovered lead-based paint in the window sills. I wish the previous installers had checked this with the other windows earlier as I'm sure they had the same paint treatment. Though they did a fairly good job of cleaning up, but I definitely would have been more stringent in making sure they vacuumed and wiped all surfaces before leaving as I have a toddler in the home. I will be more careful next time. Though these composite windows aren't nearly as beautiful as the old wood windows that were replaced, we feel confident that they will last a long, long time and will keep our house warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. After working with several contractors over the years, we've also been uber-impressed with Andersen's professionalism--they are so much easier to work with. You know what you'll get and you know it will be done well!

The whole process was very professional from meeting with the salesman through install. Scheduling, install and follow up were all very prompt, and we're already noticing a difference in noise levels and air circulation after upgrading in just 3 rooms. The price is higher than we expected because it is a superior product to vinyl, so while we hoped to do the whole house we'll have to do it in portions. Overall, very happy.

We called Renewal by Andersen to do the job and are very happy that we did. The R-by-A rep who first came to our house to discuss the job was great! He asked a lot of questions about the "look" we were going for so the windows could be worked into the overall design. He was able to offer us color and hardware options that fully complemented the rest of the kitchen design. He mentioned he might need to contact our contractor (who was doing our cabinets) as one of the windows would be precariously close to one of the cabinets and he wanted to make sure all got installed properly. That he took the time to even think about this kind of detail really put my mind at ease. [Compare this to another window group we called. Their rep cared only about figuring out how many windows he could sell us. He kept trying to get us to do our whole house even though we kept telling him that, at the moment, we were only interested in the kitchen. He just kept spitting out more numbers about how much more we could save if we did more windows. He offered no options in terms of color/hardware and was certainly not thinking about how the windows fit into the overall design of the kitchen. No thanks.] The day of the windows install, the R-by-A guys arrived right on time. They were respectful and courteous. By this time, we'd decided the frame on the aforementioned window, so close to the cabinet should be left off until the cabinet was installed (this had not yet happened). I reminded them of this and they were completely cool with this decision. I retreated to the back of the house to let them work. After a time, I went out front to take a peek and see how they were doing. I was surprised to see the installation (sans that one frame) was complete. The windows looked fabulous and they had left the kitchen cleaner than it was when they came in. Fast-forward a month. The cabinets are now in. We were under the impression our contractor would be finishing the one window frame. (The R-by-A guys had left behind the materials for this.) But, our contractor thought otherwise and told us we would have to pay extra to have him complete this. We called R-by-A and they came back and finished the one last window frame at no extra charge. ("It is in your contract; you paid for it," they said.) And, truthfully, I was happier to have R-by-A complete the job. After all, they are the experts when it comes to windows. We are completely satisfied with the quality of the work and the quality of the customer service offered by Renewal by Andersen. We will be replacing our living room windows in the not too distant future and will definitely call Renewal by Andersen again.
Description of Work: As part of our kitchen remodel, we needed to replace our kitchen windows. The existing ones were single-pane, unattractive and could not be opened.

The whole operation was totally professional. A salesman set up the appointment 2 days in advance and then called about 30 minutes before the scheduled time and asked if it woulf be O.K. if he came 10 minutes early. When he got there he had several cut-away sections of doors. He looked at the door briefly and recognized it but took a couple of measurements to verify that it had to be a custom size (which I knew). He answered all questions with facts. He then gave me a price after finding out what interior and exterior finished I wanted and what kind of trim (size, shape, material) for the interior. After all that he gave me a price, but my mother always said to sleep on a decision so I said I will decide (no pressure to buy at all). I called the next day and said yes. About 2 hours later, I got a call from the guy to measure and he set up a day and time. He called 15 minutes before and arrived as scheduled and took many measurements and about 20 photos of details for the installed and possibly the manufacturing people. The time involved in producing and delivering the window took about 2 weeks and I think the door was made in either Iowa, Illinois or Indiana (not important where). The installer also called ahead and arrived on time. I did not tell him that I had taken the AAM class (sponsored by the major window suppliers) on window/door installation. The class was about $650 and most of the guys in the class were on the clock for 2 days and were working for builders, window installation subcontractors, testing companies or were inspectors/consultants, since the liability problems and employers insurance companies required a certification for installation. The installer (a sub-contractor to Andersen) arrived with a pick-up and a large enclosed van with ladders on top. Inside the van, he had a work bench, folding work benches, generator, 2 compressors, 2 saws, a couple of nailers, hand power tools, a supply of trim (1x2 square maple for me), step ladders, vacuum cleaner, a refrigerated cooler filled with water and about a mile of extension cords. He arrived at 9:00 AM and fought with the 30 year old townhouse and door. We have 2 cats, so went out to the trailer and brought in some pipe stands and mesh to fence off the inside area to prevent escape. He replaced some hidden rotted wood (sill, etc.) and was done about 11:30 AM. I watched everything while I sat at my computer without being in the way. He spent about 10 minutes explaining the tricks and use of the door, locks, future adjustments and explaining that he adjusted it to close too tight because the gasketing will loosen up in a month or so. Then he went out for the vacuum to clean up everything and then cleaned a few old spots on the carpet. The old door was removed and everything inside and outside was perfect. When talking to him, I said I had taken the certification class and it turned out we both had the same instructor at different times. After that, he started to install the smoke and CO detectors in or near the bedrooms - included in the cost and required by most suburbs in the area. He had the permit inspection scheduled (included in the price) for 1:00PM and the inspector spent more time on the detectors, but be did look at all of the nailing and caulking and operate the door. In general, it was done strictly the way it should have been done and very professional to a high standard. The price was actually a little less than 2 other replacement companies with windows of questionable quality, although they all probable get the glass units from the same manufacturers. There is no question that I will use Renewal by Andersen on my next replacements if I can get the same installation sub-contractor.
Description of Work: I just had a Renewal by Andersen replacement sliding door put in. It was a custom size (oversize 6+ door) that had to match the exterior appearance according to the HOA. My back and knees would not permit me to do the work and I did not have all the tools to do it right.

We purchased the Angie's List coupon for Renewal By Andersen to replace the windows in our home. The salesman who came to talk to my husband and I was very informative about the product. When the next person came to measure the windows he was very polite and quick. The installation also went over very well. The two installers arrived on time and worked quickly to get the job done before lunch. After they finished installing the windows they cleaned up and then took me around to look at the windows and showed me how to operate them, especially for cleaning. We are very satisfied with our purchase. Our previous windows were difficult to operate and had no screens, now we have windows that look very nice, move easily, and have screens to keep the bugs out.

My wife and I had a great experience with Renewal by Andersen. We knew that the Andersen Window was known for it's quality as we had Andersen windows in our previous home. We recently purchased a new house and wanted to replace the old wood windows but maintain the look of the home. The sales person that came out was very knowledgeable and helped us come up with great ideas for our new windows and match the look of our home. The installers were prompt and very friendly. Overall we were pleased with the service and glad that we choose Renewal by Andersen.

Kudos to 'Renewal by Andersen' for their service. And to the Andersen company for their customer service, and standing behind their product. I highly recommend hiring these guys if you need service or to install new doors and windows, they know their stuff. I will be replacing a set of hinged patio doors and will definitely use them to purchase and install.
Description of Work: Josh is my hero When I moved into my house 16 years ago, it had a 4 panel Andersen Sliding door. Several years ago one of the panels window failed, and fogged. I contacted the Andersen company, and they shipped me a new panel. It was not stained. It ended up taking several years to get around to staining it. I contacted Renewal by Andersen to install it. Josh came out and had it installed in about 10 minutes. He proceeded to make several adjustments to the doors to fix some annoying things that I have been living with for years. Things that were out of whack due to settling. He suggested some new hardware, making sure it would fit the existing holes. He also figured out what was wrong with the screens. He installed the clips to hold the grilles, and lubricated it. It operates like a brand new door.

If you can't spare the Big Bucks, don't buy this Big Deal.
Description of Work: This deal has a hidden clause: You have to buy $3,000 worth of windows for them to honor it. So you can't just use your Angie's List Big Deal to get $1,000 worth of windows. The overall experience was not great. When scheduling the original appointment we were asked to make sure both spouses must be present at the time of the call, which was a bit off-putting as we were in the investigation stage of a complicated project, and did not expect to close on a vendor immediately. The sales person who showed up seemed professional and knowledgeable, and confident about being able to perform the project. He also showed us some demonstrations with a heat lamp of the upgraded glass. So far so good, then things went downhill. He warned us that this project would be very expensive. Then when he did the quote, it was even more expensive than we had anticipated (this was the first actual bid we got, so we did not reject it outright). We then got a push to sign immediately, in order to be able to get a discount. When we resisted, things got even more uncomfortable. After he left, we decided we would definitely get more bids, and we later realized that this company had the highest bid by far. We also realized that their product is not actually the same product as Andersen Windows you see at Home Depot, etc - it is a custom product, that only they can sell and service. In the end, we were not happy with the experience with this company and our business went elsewhere.

I recently purchased one of Angie's Lists Big Deals toward New Windows. However, as part of the deal, the consumer has no real way of telling upfront how much the estimated services will be without a visit or consultation. It is only then do you find out (after purchasing of the deal) and through sticker shock, the extent to which you will have to spend in order to be able to utilize one of these deals. Had estimated cost ranges been available and provided upfront, I certainly would have reconsidered this offer. I am better off forgoing the $299 paid for this Big Deal, than to initiate any new costs from the retailer. I had recently paid approximately 10K to replace my whole roof, only to find out now that one door to my house will cost 7-8K. With these costs, even any small job may be much more out-of-pocket (in addition to the $299) than the consumer may want to pay!! So, as a consumer, you DO NOT BENEFIT, but the retailer definitely does if the consumer does not utilize the offer purchased. I'm sure that I may not be alone. So, for every customer who does not make use of this offer is an additional $299 profited without services rendered. These offers seem deceptive and dishonest to the consumer. I have learned a valuable lesson through "Buyers Remorse" and have no intention of using this or future offers like this that refer to a discount for services (without having an estimated regular cost value or range provided upfront). I am not blaming anyone for not doing my research upfront. I just want other customer's to learn from my experience and be VERY careful of the offers you choose to purchase! Thank you.

.The process was not like any home improvement that I have went through. Greg really understood our needs and made the initial consultation a pleasurable experience. They verified the sizing a few days later and the installation was amazingly efficient and clean. The installers were pleasant and it was clear they really knew what they were doing. We had a couple of small issues after the installation and they came back right away and made the corrections.
Description of Work: We replaced several of our failed (warped & fogged) vinyl windows with Renewal by Andersen's wood interior windows. Their sales guy, Greg, gave us great ideas to improve the look of our house. We added a four panel sliding door and removed three small windows in our nook and added a large picture window to enhance our view. We did not re-hang our blinds in our living space as the new windows are not leaking cold air into our home like our old windows. I really liked that there were exterior color options besides white. We were a bit nervous about the overall cost, but we would highly recommend Renewal by Andersen's services.

This is the second time we have used Andersen and both times found them to be professional, competent, and friendly to work with. We needed to have them remove existing windows, sliding doors and an atrium window set up. They replaced a picture window, installed an awing window, and framed in and installed a large casement window (24x60). Moved in an exterior wall 4ft. framed in and installed a double sliding door with side lights. They also had to jack hammer up and remove a 4 by 12 section of mortar and tile floor. They coordinated scheduling with another company that was replacing decking at the same time. We would hire them again and have recommended them to other people.

We were very pleased with them. There were a few glitches with a couple windows that were installed but the response to that was so prompt I really can’t complain. They did a really good job. They were very prompt and courteous and they cleaned up every day. The workers that were here were very personable and I enjoyed working with them. It was very expensive but it was not above what I was expecting. They gave a very accurate quote. I wish they had taken a little bit longer to complete the project because there were a couple issues they had to redo before the project was completed because they got a little rushed. Again, they were very responsive. If there was anything we didn’t care for, they were on it immediately. We certainly would use them again.
Description of Work: We had our siding and windows replaced by Renewal by Andersen. They replaced 21 windows and resided the entire house. The process started in June and finished in July.

I will have to replace at least some of the windows of my house at some point, but I was looking to get some quotes for when I actually decide to get the work done. I got four companies to give me bids, but Renewal by Andersen was by far the most unpleasant to work with, but hopefully this is only a reflection on the one salesperson. When the salesperson came tardy to do measurements and give me an estimate, they made unflattering comments throughout the house about almost every window and door, even though they were all in good condition except for two. Afterwards, I still decided to go in to check out their product in their showroom. The original quote was $20K and we got it to $14,500 because I realized that the salesperson was trying to add every bell and whistle onto every window, even though it wasn't needed. I was given guilt trip tactics with a used car salesman pitch. In comparison, the other 3 companies I did bids with were very pleasant to talk to. To Andersen's credit, they are really quality looking windows which can be painted, but they cost about 50%-100% more than good quality vinyl and they don't have nearly as good of a warranty. If you have the budget and need to paint your windows, these guys are worth a look, but make sure you get a straight shooting salesperson.
Description of Work: I had Renewal by Andersen come out to do a quote for 16 windows on my 1000 sq. ft. house. The total cost was going to be about $14,500 for their composite windows (3 picture frames, 8 french, 2 single hung, 3 single side sliders). I never actually hired them because of the cost and the manipulative, high pressure sales tactics used by the salesperson.
