I used angie's list and also checked on the Better Business Bureau and Washington Labor and Industries. The latter was very informative as one company with a good angie's list grade had a pending lawsuits once I dug a little (may have been unfounded, but was still off-putting) and some had renamed and reregistered their companies a number of times (and had negatives under their prior company names). We ended up getting three bids and choosing LH. We also liked A Better Roof Company, but LH's came in slightly lower. LH had excellent angie's list reviews, a good better business bureau rating, obviously weren't a fly by night company because of their long work history in our community, and had nothing out of hte ordinary on the L and I website. Our roof had a small leak and they patched it until they could begin work (I think they were two weeks out, so we apologized to our neighbors for the tarp, which did work just fine). We had three layers of old roofing in the front and two in the back, plus a very steep roof. LH was easy to work with and we're happy with our roof. They were very professional, responsive, clean, safe and did great work. I highly reccomend them.

We had a roof leak into our master bedroom closet and finally decided it was time to replace our old roof. I call several top rated roofers from Angie's list to come over and give us an estimate for a new roof. We spent a lot of time getting estimates and talking to these different companies and decided to use Larry Haight's Roofing for the following reasons. Mike Apple from Larry Haight's came over to inspect the roof and gather information for the estimate. Mike was on time, professional and very knowledgeable. Mike found the leak, took some measurements and answered our questions regarding roofs and the new roofing materials available. We received a call two days latter from Haight's to schedule an appointment with Randy May to explain the different options available to us and to review the estimate. Randy came over to our house the following Saturday and presented us with a very detailed and easy to read estimate. With Randy we went over the different options and prices for those options. We asked a lot of questions and spent some time going over the details. Randy was very pleasant and extremely knowledgeable about everything having to do with roofs. We took a few days to study the estimate and the materials used and then hired Haight's. They gave us a two week estimate for the start date and in the meantime they put a temporary patch on the roof to stop the leak. Chris Brockman, the production manager for our job, showed up on the agreed upon day and time with his crew . They protected the house and landscaping before they started the project. Chris paid great attention to detail and took pictures of every stage of the project from start to finish; this was helpful as we are not able to see our roof from the ground level. The crew was very respectful of the property, pleasant, hard working and very skilled. The project took 3.5 days. Chris was there every day to inspect the work and the crew cleaned up before they left each evening. The job went very smoothly and we are extremely pleased with the finished product. Haight's was also helpful in addressing two additional concerns for us. Chris checked out an area of siding, up high near the roof, that had not been installed properly in 1996. He took pictures of this siding and was able to help us come up with a solution to replace it. We have actually hired Haight's to come back and replace that area of siding as well as put in some wire netting on areas of the roof where we have bird problems.
Description of Work: Larry Haight's Roofing Company removed my old roof, replaced some sheathing that had dry rot, installed metal flashing, applied a felt vapor barrier and put on Landmark Certainteed shingles. They also replaced 5 plumbing flashings with new lead flashing and installed 20 feet of roof to wall venting. To prevent further dry rot, they installed venting baffles under the sheathing.

Response from Larry Haight's Residential Roofing Co
This homeowner contacted us on July 26th about a roof leak. We explained to this homeowner that our turnaround time for repairs is running about 7-10 days, especially this time of year. We contacted this homeowner and set a time to meet August 1st and an estimate was mailed out on August 3rd. The total turnaround time was 6 business days, well within the time we initially explained to this homeowner.

I gave the address of my office when we scheduled the meeting and said we could go to a restaurant a block away. The day of the meeting they apparently tried to call my mobile (I was in meetings and couldn't answer) because the restaurant had three locations listed on its web site, and they didn't know which one to go to despite me having given the address of my work building that was a block away. Five minutes before we were to meet I got a call from the rep, and he said he would be there in ten minutes (5 minutes late). He showed up a full 20 minutes late and then said he would need a full 45 minutes to give us all the information. I said we had only blocked out 45 minutes starting at the time we had arranged to meet, so we didn't have that much time left, and he got huffy and said that they had tried to call me because they didn't know where to go. Way to blame the customer. I told him we could go ahead and meet if he wanted but we weren't interested in rescheduling. He said there was no way he could give us all the information in 30 minutes, and he left. We'll go with one of the other five companies that is actually willing to email their estimate without a 45-minute sit-down sales pitch.
Description of Work: Of the six roofing companies we contacted for estimates, this was the only one that refused to send us an estimate without a sit-down meeting. We scheduled a lunch meeting during the work day more than a week in advance.

We are sorry that you feel the way you do. As you noted, we did try calling you to find out the exact location of the restaurant as there are three locations and to tell you that we were running late. We do require sitting down and meeting with people to explain about one of their largest investments as a homeowner will make, a new roof. This meeting does take longer than thirty minutes. We feel by doing this we are allowing customers to make a wise decision and not just go with the cheapest price. As you can read the other comments, and probably the reason why you contacted us in first place, we are an excellent roofing company and we take great pride in knowing that we install the best possible roof for our customers. Good luck with your project.

We're extremely pleased with the overall efficiency and workmanship of the job. Ran like clockwork. Each member of the crew knew exactly what his responsiblities entailed from day-to-day and were very pleasant and professional. The company never used outside contractors; consequently, it maintained 100 percent control of its staff and realized total efficiency. There were two principal supervisors: one with overall responsiblity for the crew, the lead contractor, and the production manager from the home office, who inspected the project once, twice, or several times each day, The latter party also stayed in constant telephone contact with us, keeping us informed as to the daily arrival times by various personnel. At the end of each work day, the site was cleaned-up very well as humanly possible, heavy equipment notwithstanding. On the last day, the clean-up was exceptional, better than the site looked prior to work commencement. Our house contains two 13-foot cathedral ceilings, which takes a special roofing expertise to accomplish the job correctly. The Haight company knew exactly what was needed -- the prior contractor apparently skipped some crucial work -- which sold us on their services. No complaints at all. Highly recommended.

When the representative performed the free inspection, he quickely identified the source of the problem by using a tape measure to locate the source of the dripping sound on the ceiling then taking the measurements to the roof. The workman that replaced the vent was quick, efficient and thorough.

Very, very well. We noticed a fresh water stain on the ceiling after recent rains. We recently bought this house, and were told they put the roof on, and it was still under warranty. So we called them to check for leaks. Turned out to be the skylight, not the roof. We had them check the other skylights--one other had a problem, too. So they replaced 3 of them in total, and a 4' gutter segment by the front door. They were very professional, very responsive. For the original diagnostic visit, they were out within a couple days, called before showing up, and were actually early. Found the problem quickly and we received a quote within a day via email and mail. Then we thought perhaps we should check all the skylights for leaks and do any others that might be failing. They came out again, quite promptly, and did find another with a problem. New quote out promptly. Then they did the gutter first, called first to let us know they were on their way. Then they told us when to expect the skylights (some were custom sized). I asked to be called a day ahead of them doing the skylights so we would be sure to leave tarps beneath the areas before going to work the day of the installs. They did call a day ahead, as requested. I put N/A for price b/c we did not shop around for this. We preferred for them to do the work, since they did the roof and I didn't want any potential issues with roof warranty by having someone else doing things up there. They were very professional, very responsive, very on top of things. And they did give an Angie's List discount too (the price I quoted did not include the discount). They were a pleasure to work with. Really glad the prior owner chose them for the roof work!

My husband and I had quite a few bids and they were very competitive. They were immediate locals who lived here which was one of the reasons that I went with them. I would definitely use them again in the future.

They did the job pretty quickly. They gave us a good price for the work that they did. There was only one issue. We haven't talked with them about it yet. They installed a rain barrel, but we didn't know what we were getting into with it. I'm not sure that they knew anything about these barrels, but the water doesn't have a way of going back into the rain spout.

We have used Larry Haight's Roofing in the past. They didn't have a picture of the gutter screens installed and if I had seen one before I would not have had them installed because I do not like how they look. We are glad you got your gutters repaired but don't understand why you gave us such a bad rating. Next time we could always lie, say we can do the work then after we started the job tell you we can't do the job. It looks as though you are not the customer for us anyways.

This is the second roofing job that Larry Haight's has done for us in the past few years, and we are very satisfied with the end result of both. This latest job was far more complex because we had damage to some wall structure and eave/soffet areas that had to be corrected. Haight VP George Bear did a very detailed assessment for the estimate. George was honest in making sure we understood that costs for some of the structural work would depend upon what they found when they opened up the damaged areas. We got one other estimate from another roofing contractor, and the two were very close in price. We decided to go with Haight based on previous experience and more recent Angie's List ratings. Another factor that helped us select Haight for the job was that they offered us short term (one year) financing with no interest charges. There was a bit of understandable delay in beginning the project due to weather delays on preceeding jobs. We were warned that this could happen and planned accordingly. The roofing and gutter work were done in exactly the estimated time. When we raised some concerns about a cosmetic issue (not a workmanship problem -- we just didn't like the way the roof ridge looked from certain angles) it was promptly worked out to our satisfaction The very knowledgable and professional job foreman, Chris Brockman, working with George, developed a strategy for making the wall repair (using an excellent subcontractor) that avoided much of the incidental rework that we were expecting and thereby actually lowering the overall cost of the repairs. Cost for the overall project was high, but seems reasonable given the complexity of the job and the quality of work. The only quibble we have is that scheduling of the work was somewhat erratic towards the end. They were very diligent about getting the new roof on as quickly as possible so as to limit exposure to the weather, but finishing details, mainly carpentry and interior finishing where the wall repair had been done, dragged on for several days at the end.
Description of Work: Replacement of dimensional composite shingle roof over portion of home. Installation of new surface for internal gutter system. Installation of new downspouts with "clean-out" boxes. Structural repair of one wall (including window repacement) and several areas of eaves/soffets to correct damage from leakage of internal gutters.

Overall, the experience went well. We received at least three bids from other companies, and the price wasn't the most expensive nor was it the least expensive; right in the middle. The price was reasonable for the type of work done. The color that they picked was exactly what I wanted, which was very important to me. I chose this company primarily because they seemed to have a better quality gutter screening system and because they seemed to be able to complete the job sooner than the other companies. They also had good scores from Angie's list. They were not the cheapest. I was told that I would be scheduled for a date as soon as I sent in my 50% down payment. This turned out not to be the case and they kept stalling on an exact date, I would have to call back, they had to get it on the white board, etc. Call were not always returned promptly. I kept telling them I wanted it scheduled when I could be there, just let me know. I wanted to make sure the downspouts were arranged in a certain direction as the County had been pretty particular about the drainage to this building. I even sent in to them the diagram that the County had drawn up in their permit. I requested extensions to the downspouts which the County had requested, and they said they would provide for no extra charge. I know I got pushed back a couple of days due to weather issues, and was finally set for November 9, which was later than I expected. But on October 29, I was told I could be moved up to Saturday, October 30, if the worker could only get his daycare arranged. I said OK, but only if they could arrive by 8:00 am , 8:30 at the latest as I had to leave by 9:00. Chris told me he would be there at 8:00. He left me his cell phone number to call if there were a problem. By the time I had to leave at 9:00 he wasn't there. I called again from my cell an hour later, but still no return call. When I returned late that day, the job was done but the downspouts were not pointed correctly and in fact the water was pooling around the building. I finally made contact with the company on Monday. He promised that the worker would be out in the afternoon to fix the problem. This did in fact happen and the worker corrected the downspout problem and even added a more extended downspout. So in the end, the job was satisfactory and I believe the quality is good, but I didn't like their lack of effort in the area of communication.

I am very sorry that my company did not meet your expectations. I do know however, that we did everything possible to accomodate your demands. When you signed up with us we told you how far out our gutter schedule was (3-4 weeks) and you still chose to have us complete the work. We cannot control the weather nor can we forsee surprises on some jobs that may delay our schedule. George, Chris and Hugo worked extremely hard to get your project completed within three days of receipt of your deposit. I admit that we did show up a half hour late-only because my gutter installer did not receive the message the NIGHT before telling him to show up at 8:30. I strive for excellent communication and every time you called, you either spoke to someone directly who answered your questions or if you had to leave a message, you did receive a call back. I am extremely proud of my crew and the job that they performed at your house.

Our primary complaint is that the company refused to honor an advertised discount worth over $1000 after the work was complete, even though we'd discussed it in every conversation with the salesperson and had never been told we might not get it. The salesperson initially confirmed we could pick either the Angie's List ($500) or Microsoft Prime (5%) discount. When the bid estimate ended up being over $20,000 we again confirmed the discount amounts with the salesperson and said we'd go with Prime since it would be larger for the estimated cost of our project. After the work was complete, the first ?final? invoice was $20,000 too high due to an accounting error, and also did not show the discount, so we called and again reminded the salesperson to include the discount when correcting other billing errors, and he still didn't mention any problem with us getting the discount. When the final "corrected" invoice still didn't show the discount, and when we called again the salesperson finally told us that we would not get the discount and that the owner had confirmed that decision. When we called the owner to discuss, he was hostile over the phone, told us he did not believe our account of our conversations with the salesperson, that his salespeople always communicate clearly, that we were "obviously" not eligible for any discounts since we'd let the salesperson include some N/C insulation in the bid, that any discounts would need to have been specifically printed in the bid, that the insulation was more valuable than the discount, and that we should just be grateful we got a good roof. We followed up with a detailed letter (below) when we paid the final bill, explaining our position and noting that we were paying the discount amount under protest and expected it to be refunded promptly, and we did not receive a response. We believe the quality of the actual work was good, the work crew was clean and efficient while they were on site, the project was eventually completed, and several months later it looks good with no apparent leaks. Communication, scheduling, and coordination were below expectations, and it took about three months from deposit (9/21/2009) to completion (12/31/2010), with significant unexpected delays between the roof, gutter, and chimney parts where we felt we'd been forgotten until we called to ask for status updates. Here?s the protest letter we delivered along with our payment (1/5/2010), to which the company did not respond: To: Larry Haight Residential Roofing From: Arthur Watson, 2219 179TH CT NE Redmond WA 98052 Re: Notice of payment under protest due to your company?s failure to honor advertised discount Although I am paying your invoices in full (invoice 8010 for $13,229.53, invoice 3458 for $306.60, plus note the $10,000 deposit I had already paid for a project total bill of $23,536.13), I dispute $1176.80 of that total amount and I am paying that part under protest while reserving my right to recover the disputed amount either with your cooperation or through legal process. The disputed amount represents your company?s advertised 5% discount under the Microsoft Prime Passport program. Here is my basis for the dispute. I am a member of both Prime, for which your company advertises a 5% discount, and Angie?s List, for which your company advertises a $500 discount. My wife and I discussed both discounts upfront with your sales representative Randy May, confirming that the discounts could not be combined so we had to pick one, and that the Prime 5% discount was preferable for projects over $10,000 as ours ended up being. We discussed the discount with Mr. May in each of our conversations (as my wife Carolyn can confirm, and Mr. May should also remember), and he never indicated that you would not honor the discount until after the work was complete and we?d received your final ?corrected? invoice 8010. Even in our conversation about your initial invoice 8010 (which was over $20,000 too high due in part to treating our $10,000 deposit as a charge rather than a payment), I reminded Mr. May to make sure the corrected bill would also include the 5% Prime discount and he did not indicate even then that your company did not intend to honor it. Your written bid, which we signed, certainly did not indicate that you would not honor the advertised discount, and it also did not call out any items as ?offers which cannot be combined with other offers? such as the advertised discounts. Your company?s position, as I understand it from a telephone conversation with Larry Haight, is that handwritten line 22 of your bid, ?Add 6? Owens Corning blow-in fiberglass insulation and soffit baffles. N/C?, which unlike other handwritten lines Mr. May did not even ask me to initial, constituted an implicit ?offer? that made me ineligible for any of your company?s advertised discounts. My wife and I both recall that Mr. May said that adding 6? of blown-in insulation was included at no charge as part of the reroofing service. We were initially skeptical that we wanted additional insulation even for no charge since we had no reason to believe our existing insulation was inadequate, but Mr. May assured us that more is better and it wouldn?t do any harm plus it was easy to do with the roof off and there wouldn?t be any charge so we should be happy to have it and not worry. Mr. May did not, verbally or in writing, attribute any dollar value to the insulation as part of the bid, and certainly gave no indication that it would effectively cost us over a thousand dollars in discount eligibility since we would definitely not have agreed to it under those conditions. Only on the invoice after the bill was complete did your company list the insulation as a $2200 charge with $2200 credit and then claim that as the basis for refusing to honor your advertised discount. Please reconsider your position and refund the disputed amount of $1176.80 to me promptly. Sincerely, Arthur Watson

Response from Larry Haight's Residential Roofing Co
The following is being written to defend my company from one of your members who is stating that they are owed an additional discount totaling $1,176.80 and to explain the truth. Below is a true description: 1. On September 9th the member called in to our office asking us to look at their roof and give them an estimate to replace her roof. The member also scheduled a sales appointment for September 14th. When asked "how did she hear of us" The said that she found us through Angies List, not through the Microsoft Prime Card 2. On September 14th, one of our salesmen met with the member's to explain what we found when inspecting their roof and to explain our company and policies. 3. During the sales process, the topic of discounts came up and the member's explained that they were members of the Microsoft Prime Card program, which we also work with and offer a 5% discount to members, and asked if they could use this discount. It was specifically stated by our salesmen that they could choose between the Angies List discount, the Microsoft Prime Card discount or take advantage of our offer of free blown-in insulation. It was stated that these discounts could not be combined. It is also stated on both the Angies List website and the Microsoft Prime Card website that our discounts are "not valid with any other offer." 4. On September 19th, the member sent us a very detailed email stating that he would like to move ahead with us. In this email he states that he would like the free insulation and there was no mention that they would like an additional discount using their Microsoft Prime Card or using Angies List (please see attachment 1) 5. On September 22nd, we mailed an acknowledgement letter to the member's explaining to them the Contract Date, the Contract Price and Contract Extras - which we listed all of their extras and the installation of new blown-in insulation with baffles at no charge. This is where we would explain if the customer is receiving any formal discounts. It is also listed on this letter "if you have any questions or concerns regarding the items listed above, please do not hesitate to contact our office." No phone call or email was received from the member's. (Please see attachment 2) 6. On October 8th a letter was sent out explaining that the project start date is "tentatively scheduled between the dates of October 12_19th." This letter also explains that our schedule is dependent on weather and to call with any concerns. (Please see attachment 3) 7. On October 9th we called the member's to let them know which day we would like to start their job; this date was pushed back due weather 8. On October 16th we called the member's to let them know that we would be starting their job on October 19th 9. On October 19th we started the roofing, insulation and gutter project and the final inspection took place on October 26th 10. December an invoice for the project was created. The members called and stated that their invoice was wrong and they were told that we would look into this matter and send out a new invoice. Again, there was no mention of the Prime Card Discount during this phone call. 11. December 15th a corrected invoice was mailed to the members. 12. The member called our office and asked to speak with Larry, owner, Larry Haight's Residential Roofing, about our invoice. The member was accusatory from the start of the conversation, stating that how bad of company we are. Larry was not hostile toward the member. Larry was forced to defend his company, like anyone who has run an honest business for 25 years would. In closing, I truly believe we did not make any mistakes nor did we at any time mislead the members. The members had ample time to discuss the Microsoft Prime Card discount and they received several communication points from us where they could have brought up the discount. Nothing was ever said about them wanting an additional discount until the "corrected" final invoice was received. We try extremely hard to make sure this process goes smoothly and when situations come up, we do an excellent job in communicating with our customers, just as it has been proven with the members.
