1. The grout there was an off-white color and he used a color way too white and left way too much excess grout trying to cover better. The problem was that made it look very sloppy overall, and his daughter used a white grout pen to touch up some areas which was yet another color of white. The stains were mostly covered but it looked very amateur. I finished the cleanup and fixed it myself. 2. I asked them to power wash 2 doors as well. Our garage man door is a custom wood door that was to be repainted by another painter I hired. His son did the power washing and just ravaged the door. The wood was soaked and splintered badly, with several marks and gouges from the washing. The painter was only able to sand so much and the door just looks hammered now! As far as the walkway stain, he agreed to provide the stain. He never had me approve the color before he began, but fortunately it is close to what was there. He had quoted the job thinking he could spray it on and found out this stain is too thick for that. We were having beautiful sunny weather, but because he started the first day of painting after noon, and the second day he was still not done. By the third day it was still sunny in the morning, but he arrived very late and we had a downpour just after he finished and left. The last 20 feet or so had to be re-stained, but the concrete seams between the sections are no longer gray because of the stain running onto them; not sure what I will do with that yet 3. The driveway lights are OK, although I just noticed later that one section of wire is laying on top of the ground by my fountain, rather than buried 6" like they say. Also, my old transformer and lights were taken without asking me! 4. Don ordered a tub that was much smaller than the one I had, which would never have worked since I did not want the whole surround redone. The original plan was to get a slightly bigger tub and cut the opening a bit and adjust the faucet as needed. My tub has an egg shape, which he knew from the start (and noted on the original contract). We had a conversation about the tub, which I clearly stated I did not want (again, no approval from me before buying it) and I did more research about having the tub fixed rather than replaced. At that point I had no confidence in his ability to do that job, and found someone else to fix it. 5.The last job he started on probably should have been the first. He got the floor ready for the new shower pan and planned to get it the next morning and come put it in. I was told I would get a call either way, but ended up with an email saying it was not in stock and had to be ordered, so he did not show at all that day. (Mind you, he knew he needed this pan for weeks and had plenty of my money to buy it then!) I could tell he was in a rush now, since this was the end of week two. On Friday he grouted and tried to seal the grout already, but decided he would need to come back. At that point I showed him the mess where the section of walkway they had stained now had footprints and stains from when they had mixed grout behind my fence. He agreed it would have to be fixed (blaming his daughter for the mess) and that he would need to buy another gallon of stain. We agreed he would come back Saturday late morning and re-stain that section and seal the grout. In the meantime I discovered the grout job was just awful! I see light gray (which I asked for), a darker gray, and white. Some grout lines were very full and others barely had any. I emailed him that he would need to re-grout when he came. He arrived without the stain, and when I showed him the grout he agreed that he needed to redo it, saying he would need to buy more grout. (Since I can identify 3 colors, I do not think he ever had the proper grout but tried to mix leftovers.) He said he would go get those and come back Monday after 5pm if that was OK. We were NOT happy about this at all. We decided not to have him come back at all, and I have done much research about grouting a tile shower floor. (One thing I learned is that the grout should cure for 7 days before it is sealed on shower floors!!!) In conclusion, since I had taken the tub job from him and reused the old shower door, I only owed him a small portion of what would have been the 50% balance due. He was probably relieved when I said not to come back! He will quote a job and then try to research how to do it, but he obviously is a rookie at nearly everything. He underestimated his time on pretty much everything, as well as how to do the work. I should have done more research upfront. This business had pretty high ratings on Home Advisor, and I was not yet on Angie's list. I would not hire him to change a light bulb - so very disappointed we are! He also brings his music right into your house without asking.
