Had been interviewing roofers and getting estimates, and a door to door canvasser came by. Door to door canvasser came by, scheduled an estimate. Estimator came out and Polar Bears cost was higher than the nearest competitor. They then came down to a reasonable amount for the project, but were still the highest. Selected them because, roofing system, warrantied by Polar Bear and CertainTeed, the roofing mfg. Employees doing the work, not contractors paid by the square. Metal roof edging, nice finish. Polar bear crew came out on the first chance we had with no rain, took some rescheduling which went well. They showed up as expected and got tarps out and removed the old roof. Replaced one small piece of sheathing with plywood. Added Solar Tubes including interior finish. No leaks, they came out and adjusted a crooked roof vent, cleaned the valley and gutter while on the roof. Overall did a good job. Missed some nails around the property when cleaning up, one nail exposed on the roof, needs to be sealed this spring.
Description of Work: Old roof needed to be replaced, not leaking. Removed and replaced entire roof, added 5 Solar Tubes. 2500 sqft of roofing.

We were told that the cost of materials would be reduced if they could combine our materials order with another job. Even so, the price was nearly double what we paid with another builder. I have no doubt that they would have done a good job but the cost was too high.

Thank you for the review, Ive looked into your project and the bid we left you and it appears the price with left was for a more complex and larger of a deck than the more simple one you are describing here. We apologize if we weren't on the same page for what kind of project you are looking for. We hope everything worked our for you and that you found a good contractor who took care of your project and home. Whether it is with us or another company, we wish you the best of luck with all of your future home improvement endeavors!

The sales associate from Polar Bear had been out to measure and provide a quote but it was more expensive than other bids I had received so I declined. I was going to put off the project until the following spring. A month or two later the sales team contacted me about remeasuring and perhaps beating their prior quote. The price quoted this time was similar to others I had received although still not the lowest. What sold me was their ability to begin almost immediately and procure the proper permits and materials quickly and work even in freezing and/or wet weather. They also claimed to over-engineer their products to provide long-lasting quality builds. About a week later the crew arrived to demolish the old deck. A drainage problem was discovered by the deck designers who were basically recreating the old deck design in its prior dimensions over sloping ground. This problem would be an additional $5100 charge to put in a French Drain and replace rotting railroad ties with chipped rock face retaining blocks. Then they could support the overhanging deck portion without it settling. I agreed to this. The tear down and drainage problem resolution took 2 days and went smoothly. The retaining blocks look quite attractive. Then the deck build got underway over a holiday weekend. I talked with the crew on several occasions who seemed friendly and knowledgeable. I wanted them to take care not to damage some radio cables which were running under the deck and indeed these were not damaged at all. Finally on the following Tuesday the deck was complete and looked spectacular. They hauled away the last of the old deck materials the following day and cleaned up well. They even replaced a leaking gutter downspout when cutting out a hole for it to mate with the drain under the deck. The build is clearly beefier and sturdier than the prior deck and has the benefit of the very expensive but low maintenance Trex material. I am very satisfied with the quality of the work performed.
Description of Work: Tear down of existing 400 sq ft cedar deck, build of a new 16 x 8 foot deck of the same dimensions using Trex Transcend material on the flooring and rail.

All went very well, from selection of the windows and doors to the installation, The installers showed up in a timely manner, went right to work and the new windows and doors were done in a timely manner. They cleaned up and the windows and doors look great. I would highly recommend this company. Quality but expensive.

First off I would like to say that the weather was not the greatest during the roof installation, there was lots of rain and wind. They took 3 days to put it on but weather conditions made for the extra time. That said, overall the work done could have been done better. The look of the roof is great, it really looks nice, I do hope that it was put on correctly as I have no way of actually knowing, I just have to trust the installers. My problems were about the extra work done or lack there of by the installers. Cleanup, there were 4 installers and though they cleaned up most of the mess there were lots of small items left on the ground. Days later I'm still finding small groups of staples, pieces of cutoff metal edging, nails in our yard. It concerns be especially when I will be mowing the yard. At no time did my wife and I ever see someone use a magnetic roller to pick up nails & stuff. Then my neighbor found a roll of over a hundred nails from their nail gun out in the road. Thank goodness no one hit it driving down our street. Then lots of pieces of new shingles were randomly left all over the kitchen roof. Then the big wind last week came up and blew stuff over our yard and the neighbors. All of this would have been easy to alleviate by spending an extra 15-20 minutes at the end of the day to clean up and put away stuff. After the first day I emailed the project manager about the cleanup and I got no reply. If you have your email address on a business card it should be used otherwise remove it, as it is a waste of time having it there. I do prefer email as I now have a record that I sent something and of a reply if I get one. Calling someone on the phone leaves no record of anything. During the whole reproofing process (5 days total including breaks because of rain) we never saw or heard from the project manager. And lastly the worse thing was Polar Bear sending out a crew that does not understand the English language. At least that is what they said, "no nabla ingles". I'm sorry, I don't care how good of work they may do if you can't speak to and understand your customer they are not much use. For the money they should have done better overall. Did Polar Bear do a good roofing job, YES. Would I do business with them on any other projects, PROBABLY NOT. UPDATE 11/14/14: I received a call from one of their installers who was out in Lake Stevens and would be coming by to look the grounds over and do a cleanup. He showed up with a co-worker and even though my wife and I had gone over the whole yard quite a few times they were still able to find plenty of staples and cut off pieces of metal. They used a magnet, small rake plus good eyes to find more items in the grass and flower beds. They were very apologetic about the way things were not cleaned up well and did a great job after the fact. I think there would have been less of a problem with cleanup and anything else if the project manager had simply stopped by to see how the job was going. A simple 10 minute stop and chat would have probably resolved everything. Maybe I am wrong but I thought that is what a project manager was supposed to do.

Full disclosure, I was given a decent % markdown and my A.L. annual membership was reimbursed by Polar Bear just so I would write a review after it was all done. That said, they did a great job. Still 1-2 small things that are uncompleted, but they seem on top of it and should be sending someone out to take care of it. They checked in with me very often to make sure I was satisfied and well-informed. Tons of communication on their end, perhaps too much, as I couldn't always keep track of who was involved / who I should call if I needed anything. As it turns out, I didn't really need to ever contact them mid-project, since they basically had everything down and didn't cause me any extra concern. Price was slightly higher than 1 other bid, but we felt much better about this company and they offered a significantly better warranty (transferable, non-pro-rated 50 years = 49 years from now, if something proves faulty, I get a brand new roof.) I know a warranty is only as good as the company behind it, but it's also backed up by the shingle manufacturer, so that's some added confidence. No "nickle and diming" here, price agreed up front = price paid, they also shopped around to find a good credit union that offered a better rate than anything I found, and they took care of all the paperwork to make that happen, making my life easier. All in all, I'm pleased and would definitely recommend this company for a roof replacement.

I should have known better when Kesh was late for the appointment. But the product looked great and the training programs the team goes through seemed fantastic. They had difficulty scheduling the day they'd come out but said they'd be here today, 6/28. They were 2 hours late and only stayed for 2 hours. It started raining so they packed up and left. It only rained for 20 minutes. I called Kesh and he brushed it off and said they'd finish tomorrow. Now I have to cancel my plans because the one thing I said through the whole process was I wanted to be here. I'm sorry, but I'm not comfortable with a bunch of strangers hanging out at my house when I'm not here. I will never use Poler Bear again. UPDATE: Justin (owner) apologized for what happened and provided an acceptable discount on the services. They did a good job on the roof and the interaction since the install has been pleasant.

We sincerely apologize about the inconvenience, we always try to accommodate our customer's schedules, but performing installations on weekends can create logistical problems for us making sure we have enough of the right guys on the job... and of course inclement weather can further complicate things. The caller hung up without answering my question about how he may have had some sort of legal business relationship that made his call legal under the federal Do Not Call Registry law. ========================================= RESOLVED Both the calling employee and the business owner have apologized for the illegal call, with a handwritten card and a gift. This demonstrates that Polar Bear is an honest company that does care about its public image. Apology accepted. My household receives between 2000 and 3000 illegal phone calls per year, in blatant violation of the Do Not Call Registry. I answer a small fraction of them to see what the current trends are, with hopes of occasionally tracing them back to the boiler rooms and possibly help shut down some criminal enterprises. But their Call-IDs are faked and tracks covered, and the few live humans reached are trained to uselessly deflect all questions. Polar Bear did not fake its Call-ID or cover its tracks or try to hide, and has stepped forward to make amends. Unlike the other fly-by-night operations, this call appears to have been an honest error. My original F grades for Professionalism and Overall are therefore removed. I cannot give them an Overall A due to their original error, but I do give them an A for Responsiveness for the quick resolution.
Description of Work: Today I received a cold call solicitation from someone purporting to be this business. He did know my name. This call was illegal, a violation of the federal Do Not Call list. ===================== RESOLVED -- see below

Initially, I got a sales pitch, not a quote. Two representatives came over, probably an installer and a salesperson. They looked at what I showed them, showed me examples of the products they were selling. They took measurements of the windows and doors to be replaced. They mostly gave me a real sales pitch, and the sales person kept trying to shake my hand, as if that would close a deal for which no details had been agreed to. They gave me a bottom line number, with no hard details of what would be done for that number. I never got an emailed quote. They wanted to send another estimator to my house for the final quote. I figured that if they didn't yet have enough information for a hard quote they had wasted my time and theirs. Some months later, I had decided to do the deck work first. They called offering a quote. I explained my previous experience. They sent just an installer. He looked at what I wanted, took rough measurements and some pictures. I gave him my email address for the quote, and he gave me his card. After several weeks with no reply, I called. He said he had lost my phone number, and a short while later gave me a verbal quote over the phone. I don't consider something a quote unless I have written evidence of what they are offering to do for that amount of money. They had my address to get to my house. They could have mailed a quote either time. As a technical person myself, I also don't take well to sales tactics, The sad thing is that I got a reasonably good impression of their technical capabilities based on the discussions. They knew the materials and options and work required. I will not, however, buy a pig in a poke, so I will not be hiring them.
Description of Work: They contacted me offering to provide a quote on windows. I asked for a quote on replacement windows and doors and a deck repair. Later I asked for a quote on just a deck replacement and expansion..

Outstanding! From 1st contact to fully installed roof in10 days, and that was delayed on our side. The day they were here they had the whole roof torn off and replaced in around 6 hours. My wife, who was home at the time, said the workmen were very professional, but it sounded like we had a herd of elephants on the roof. They used CertainTeed roofing materials, and are considered Shingle Masters, so the CertainTeed Company has issued a 50 year warranty that covers materials, labor, tear off, replacement, and disposal. The warranty is also fully transferable for the 1st 12 years. That's a heck of a sale point when it comes time to sell. The sales team were very professional, and also taught my wife and I more about roofing than I ever wanted to know. The company was also able to arrange financing with no payments or interest for12 months which really helps fit it into the budget. Also, there was not a single bit of trash let over when they were done.

Polar Bear Roofing has greatly exceeded my expectations and I would like to share our experience with others. Late last year my wife and I began to smell a small amount of mildew/mold in our attic and suspected either wood rot or its onset. We took advantage of Angie?s list and met with several roofing contractors to discuss our needs. Several of the contractors we had met had told us that we would need to sheet over our plank roof with additional plywood. However, Polar Bear informed us that our plank roofing was of the tongue and groove variety and we wouldn?t need to sheet over to get a 50 year guarantee using Certain Teed? shingles. I also told them I was worried about rain on the roof during installation and what that might to the planking. Cory, thePolar Bear representative, was understanding of my concerns and emphasized that they had a large roofing team that was well trained and would likely replace the roof in only one day. I was also impressed by the amount of good technical information that Cory provided about shingle materials, the need for ventilation in our attic, and the methods that they employed to impart durability to the installed roofing. I left for work early in the morning of the project around 6:30 am and returned home around 4:00 pm. At that point the workers were just putting the finishing touches on our new roof including the new solar tube. There was a large crew of at least 12 workers busy working to get the job done. By 5:00 pm we said goodbye to the crew as they drove off, marveling at the job that they had done. Everyone was extremely polite and there was not a single piece of scrap left lying around when they had finished. I might add that the day the roof was installed was the only completely dry day that week and was immediately followed with four very rainy days. During the fourth day I climbed up into the attic with my sons and inspected the attic for moisture and leaks. We could not find a single wet spot (or even anything moist). What was even more surprising was the improved ventilation due to the venting installed along the crown of the roof. As a result I am glad that I selected Polar Bear Roofing and would recommend them to anyone. Our new roof looks beautiful!

My last contact with them was the first week of January. I spent about $20000. I was thinking of having solar panels put on the the roof but they went up there and said my existing roof was sort of spongy and that I needed a new roof. The roof had been on for 20 years and it wasn't a very high class covering so I agreed to the new roof. I thought they did a pretty good job and there were 3 or 4 guys who started the work at noon and finished the next day at noon. They were steady workers and I got a 50 year warranty roof so I got a really good product. I got shingles and everything so I won't have a moss problem. I have faith in the product that they provided me. The warranty was from the maker of the shingles and I was very happy.

These guys are great. They showed up on time, cleaned up every day and finished the job within 5 days even with some typical springtime Seattle weather. I should clarify the job cost given above. It includes King County sales tax of nearly 9%. They know what they are doing and unless I am mistaken, all their crew seemed to know one another pretty well. By that I mean they don't hire guys from the Home Depot parking lot. They all seemed to be professional roofers. Do yourself a favor..... Get a bid
