The work done on the windows occurred in 2 phases. In both phases, the work done by Polar Bear's installation crew, supervised by Adam, were excellent. The crew took all the necessary precautions with coverings for the floors, isolating each window install with plastic sheeted workspaces so as to not blow dust into the house, and cleaning up after the work. Overall, the install work was done very professionally and it was clear that the installers were experienced. I give them an A for the quality of the install work. There was an issue with Phase 1 where the windows supplied by VPI were defective. I was clearly unhappy by this given that these windows were not cheap. Unexpectedly, I got a call from Nate, one of the co-founders of Polar Bear, who had heard about what happened. Nate then came home with a VPI technician and they went through the windows identifying the various issues. Nate worked with VPI to ensure that all the issues with those Phase 1 windows were fixed. The issues with the windows turned out to be a manufacturing glitch on VPI's end, and had affected hundreds of other windows. I was just "lucky" enough to receive part of that set of windows unfortunately. I give VPI a D for a lack of appropriate quality control, and then not following up with due diligence after discovering the manufacturing glitch. Nate, and Polar Bear, clearly cared about customer service. I did not expect one of the owners of the company to personally reach out and help drive fixing the issues. I give Nate and Polar Bear an A for customer service. That level of service is typically uncommon in the industry they're in. Phase 2 went smoothly. The quality of the work by the installers were excellent as always. The new VPI windows are great, with no issues. I am now a happier customer.
Description of Work: Polar Bear replaced the aluminum sided windows with triple-pane vinyl windows from VPI.

They seemed like nice enough guys. One of their guys was canvasing our neighborhood, stopped and asked if we wanted our roof redone. I said I was interested in a quote as i expected to be ready to move forward on a new roof in December. They sent one of their guys out a few days later and he took measurements and gave me a quote after sitting with me and selling me on the company for around an hour. He was nice. He was personable and his quote was 27,000 for the roof tear off and redone in PVC. 2-3,000 additional to patch in the rotted facia. I thanked him and told him again we would be ready to move forward likely in December. Then a few weeks later they called and wanted to send a guy out to take more measurements and give me their best and lowest offer. That guy arrived, Casey I believe was his name. He took no additional measurements and ultimately gave me no additional lower quote. He simply sat with us for an hour or so and again talked up their company. I told them again I would like to get more quotes and would likely be ready in December. A few weeks or a month passed and they called me again to take more measurements and come give us their best lowest offer. Again Casey came to our house, he had clearly not recalled coming to our house previously. Again he took no measurements and again the quote didnt change in any way. Instead sat with us and talked up the company, got us to sign papers to move forward on financial aspects. Again we emphasized that we wouldnt be able to move on it until December. We figured out a different financial avenue and told him to cancel the papers, which he did. They called us again a month or so later and asked to come give us their best offer. I laughed and declined the appointment. Our finances came together in March and we secured two additional quotes. One was from an A-rated Angies List contractor. That quote came in at 15,000 for the same work. They even redid all of the facia and that added only 1,300 to the final price. The total bill was 9,000 less than Polar Bears quote. That contractor sat with me for around a half an hour and did not try to upsell his company. Obviosuly take this review for what its worth, considering I got no actual work done by Polar Bear. But I think the high pressure nature of their operation really stands out in my mind. I only thought to write this review as they called me again today to follow up. I informed them that i had already had the work done by another contractor.
Description of Work: Polar Bear provided me an estimate and quite a lot of sales pitch

I apologize that the experience went this way for you. We specialize in roofing, windows, siding and decking....offering numerous products and brands in each of these categories. Typically we have good, better and best solutions that we offer...and of course the better and best options are more expensive. When our customer resource manager does follow up, price is often an obstruction for a customer moving forward so it is common to offer a "step-down" product or scaling back the project size. Almost all project we do have multiple options with multiple price points...except for our flat roofs unfortunately. We only do EPDM and TPO (we do not install PVC roofs because there is not an acceptable warranty offered by any of the manufacturers), so there really isn't a less -expensive option that we are willing to put on someones roof and stand behind. Flat roofs are a disaster waiting to happen in the Northwest and we do not offer, nor we install, any flat roof other than a TPO or EPDM. I understand you got a quote for a different kind of membrane roof that was cheaper. I'm sure you could probably find a roofer that would do it for cheaper than that even. Our quote was for a 60-mil WeatherBond TPO roof that comes with a 50-year manufacturer-backed warranty. There is no PVC roof that comes with a 50-year warranty, so although the other quote may have been cheaper it would not be guaranteed to last as long as our roof, nor would it. We apologize you had a frustrating experience and wish you all the best with your future home improvement projects!

They came on time and worked on one window at a time until it was done. They even put up plactic floor to ceiling and covered the air vents to the heater to stop the dust. They finished the whole house in two days. They made sure I was happy with every window before leaving. I will be using them again for upcoming projects on my home. They are hands down the best contractors I've had work on my house.
Description of Work: They replaced all of my windows on my house. I had single pane windows with aluminum frames. Now I have triple pane Windows. They are great! They also helped me pick out the window that best matched my 1925 house.

The crew was so professional and on sight each and everyday even before 7 AM. The team did such a thorough job my 38 year old house looks like brand new. Justin and the crew answered my calls any time even at night to answer any questions I had. I recommended them to my friends and family and voluntarily giving this positive feedback so everyone would know of the amazing service they provide. I had other little tasks I needed done in my home and Justin sent his handymen to take care of all my tasks. Words cannot tell the quality of the work they did and you've got to see to believe it. In fact, I am going to use them to replace my front door and my deck later this year and already informed Justin.

While the work has yet to be completed, I do feel compelled to comment on the estimation process, as it relates to others that I also got. Generally speaking, I found that different companies could be quite pushy, light on details, and unwilling to put things in writing. Overall, much of my experience left me somewhat uneasy. On the contrary, Casey with Polar Bear struck a balance between his own availability and salesman-ship. I wasn't pressured in any way. He took the time that was needed to go through all of the questions that I had. We discussed some differences between his own bid and others. Overall, a positive experience thus far. I will update as the work is completed.

They came out and gave me an estimate for a new deck that would be bigger than the old one. The price I was quoted for an entire deck was to high ($25000) so I had them just remove the old deck and put in a new frame only so I could put the decking down myself. The first day they came out they removed the old deck but had a problem with the company who was supposed to supply the dumpster (I do not fault them for that) and said the dumpster would be a day late and would have to leave the old deck in a pile which I agreed would be fine for the day. When I got home from work the crew had already gone home for the day but left the entire pile of old deck in my neighbors yard which is very clearly not mine. I had to call them out that day to move the pile since my neighbor was having no part of it because of their small children. They came out and moved it within an hour. The next day they started putting in the deck frame. When they left for the day I went outside to see how it was looking. There was a large amount of trash laying around the work site including cigarette butts, nails, screws, bolts and scrap wood. The had also piled the new wood for the deck again on my neighbors property and I had to move it. The third day the employees were out they worked more on the framing of the deck and pored the concrete footings. Again they left a large mess across the entire work site. The last day they were out the did not bother to fill in the holes around the deck posts where the concrete was pored and did not clean up the large amount of nails, screws, bolts, trash, butts, etc that were laying around. I had to go out and pick up all the trash because I didn't want someone stepping on a nail. I picked up 2 quart size mason jars worth of fasteners that were left behind. They called me that Monday to ask how I liked the work they had done and told them I was not happy. I told the about the mess the large number of problems there were with the quality. At least half of the beams had large gaps common to the strong tie brackets holding the onto the beam connected to the house. The beam on connecting the deck to the house had a gap in the middle of at least six inches and looked patched together. The flashing they installed under the siding was bent in several places and also had a three inch gap at one point. On the beam opposite the one connected to the house there is not one single joint where the board ends meet the is even causing the deck boards to be preloaded where they run across. They did not put end sealant on one single pressure treated board they installed (every board is pressure treated) and didn't do a very good job of cleaning up the end cuts that are exposed. The gussets they installed on the posts all had gaps, two were not even touching the the deck frame at the top. They left at least ten nails sticking out of the deck that could easily of caught someone walking by and injured them. There were a some screws that were put in that did not make it into the boards they were supposed to be connecting to. They had to send out a supervisor/team lead three times to try and fix the problems that I had with the deck before I needed to start putting the decking down. I asked for money off the contract because the deck was not the quality I expected for paying $10000 for a deck frame, I was told the best they could offer was $250 off the price which I argued seemed pretty pitiful for how much was not right and the fact I was supposed to be paying for a new deck but instead got a reworked deck. I agreed just so I could be done with them and be able to start putting the decking down. They said they would mail me a check and put that in writing on the the contract that they signed, That was at the beginning of August, I received the check in January. When I was putting the decking down after all of this I found out they had built the frame too close to the back sliding door, back bedroom door and siding. At the beginning of January I wrote a review of the service I received, they contacted me the next day and sent a project manager out to see the deck and my concerns. They sent out a team the next day, which was a Saturday, they came out and fixed the issues I had and finished installing the decking to fit under the back doors and the posts for the deck. They were very professional and left the job site very clean. I am happy with how the project turned out overall.

About the only hitch in the entire process was that the front office sent the crew to the wrong address on the first day. After that, it was smooth sailing all the way. They had 5 guys working on our place and it was a two-day flurry of activity. Everyone involved was courteous and professional, they cleaned up their mess at the end of each day, and one guy made a special trip back the following week to trim out the inside of the windows just the way I wanted them. We have beautiful old fir sills, jambs, and molding, and they fit the new windows in perfectly so the old mill work didn't need to be disturbed. The job was done on time, just when they said it would be. We love the windows themselves and estimate that the inside temperature was 5 or 10 degrees cooler than before after the hot Summer we've had. Something that we didn't anticipate that maybe we should have was how much quieter it is inside.

First project was to install a new roof, according to CC&Rs of the Mill Creek Homeowners' Assn. Workmanship was excellent. Left my property very clean and tidy every night. Worked to time estimate well. Second project was to install a solar panel array system to reduce my electricity costs and provide electricity back to Snohomish Public Utility District. Very professional. Adjusted design to maximize direct sunlight on my two-story roof. Repaired single problem right away. Handled mountain of paperwork promptly, e.g., permits, PUD, state and federal paperwork. Worked to time estimate well. Very capable and cordial staff.

I strongly recommend hiring Polar Bear for home constructions needs. During and after our project they were extremely professional, solution focused and quality driven. The Polar Bear team replaced the siding, decking, and doors on our 1912 West Seattle craftsman home. They also removed a non-operational chimney and installed a concrete retaining wall. When we purchased the home most of the construction was amateur ?do-it-yourself? home improvements and temporary fixes. Polar Bear partnered with us to make sure questionable and old construction was replaced with high quality new materials and good craftsmanship to ensure the project was done correctly. The team on site was focused and hardworking even during the days when it snowed. When there were unexpected issues they quickly recommended solutions and implemented them. The management team visited multiple times to check the quality of the work, check in with us, and make any requested adjustments. Even after the project the office has been very quick to return phone calls and resolve questions. We?ve hired many contractors over the past 12 years and Polar Bear by far was the best to work with.

The bidding process was very complete and thorough - the project manager and his counterpart spent over 5 hours going through the details and gaining a thorough understanding of the work to be done. There were built in gutters and the job was fairly complicated - and the roof was in bad shape. They left with a signed contract. My parents are in their 80's and I oversee their financial affairs, so the PM was told I would need to give approval for the go ahead. Although the price was high, after speaking with the PM I felt confident that the project would be managed well, with my parents best interests at heart. Unfortunately this was not the case. My parents were pressured to sign off on the job and pay in full before the gutters were done. The Project Manager was not the one who came for the signoff, and their protests were not addressed. I called the PM first thing Monday after hearing of this, and received a message from someone else with an excuse about the gutters, then the office called shortly after and said someone would be there in the next couple of days. Late in the afternoon on Wednesday, my sister called the office after finding out my Dad had been waiting for 2 days for someone to show up. They came immediately thereafter and the job was completed. My father's summation of the job is that they did a good job, but he would not recommend them because of the stress of it all. There was added stress today when the PM came by for the first time since the contract was signed to question the review that I wrote yesterday. At my father's request I have modified it to take into account that there could be many factors contributing to the way the situation was handled. He is happy with the roof, and glad the job is done.

This is the most polite, friendly and helpful a crew of workers I have ever employed. A crew of 4 arrived when they said they would and put in three days (so far -- one to go) of very hard work. Although this is a messy job they were most cognizant of the surroundings and pretty much cleaned up daily. They really went above and beyond what was expected. Although this was a very stressful decision for me, this company has eased that stress considerably and I am most appreciative. This has been a very pleasant, positive experience. The roofing process was patiently explained to me and my questions were fully answered. by the project managers and the crew members as well. Everything has gone so well that I'm tempted to say: "Good Polar Bear, Nice Polar Bear! Thanks for a job so well done!

It went really well. Initially, I wasn't really pleased that my husband booked an appointment with them. We knew our windows would eventually need to be replaced, but I wasn't sure we could afford to do it properly. Keith came by and spent a few hours going over different types of windows, door options, and pricing with us. We were hesitant and not sure if we wanted to move forward. Keith didn't put any pressure on, he just gave us a call the following week to see where we were with things. I had a few more questions for him and he stopped by and we went over some more exact details, he came up with another quote, and we decided to move forward with the deal. We'd already looked at window replacement a few months earlier with a different company and Keith's pricing was really competitive for the triple-pane windows we wanted. We were pleased that Polar Bear offered so many choices. They don't work with just one brand, so there are a lot of choices you can make. Sometimes they were a bit overwhelming. Double-pane or triple? How do you want the windows to open? French doors or sliders? French doors opening in or out? Both sides opening, or just one? Painted or primed? What outside color? Screens? What way is the window facing? Do you need to block heat from daylight? How about privacy windows? We weren't rushed through the process in any way. I appreciated that because this was a pretty big purchase for us. We knew we were going a bit high-end on the windows, but there is construction going on in our area and we were really hoping to block that noise. These new windows not only look gorgeous, but they really do block the sound and the heat from sunlight. And the house is now filled with light. It's amazing what new windows can do. The install went really well. The team they sent out were really nice and cracked a lot of jokes. They were at the house for nearly 3 days (it was a pretty big job) and I really enjoyed having them here. They were obsessed with getting every detail right. They noticed a couple of things that weren't quite right with the French doors and called someone out right away to assess the situation. Ultimately, the initial doors weren't quite right for the room. Long story short, we ended up going with a different brand of door (Pella) and they are simply stunning. Of course, they were an additional cost, but they really make the room. They checked in with us often to make sure we were happy with how things were going. They really exceeded our expectations. When the time comes for new siding, we'll be giving them a call.

This started out as a cold call, a sales guy called and pushed me to let them send someone out and give a free quote for a deck replacement. The guy was on time and friendly, it wasn't until it came time for us to sit down and talk about the bid that I got a bad feeling. From that point on it was pretty much a high pressure sales pitch the likes I would expect from a used car salesman. Multiple times he ended up calling back to his manager to see if he can get me some sort of discount, then pressuring me to sign paperwork on the spot to lock it in. I was told that they would "let" me get other bids but that if I wanted the discount price I had to sign something right now. The limited time discount was under the guise of them having a crew in the area already and if I didn't act quickly I would miss out. I'm pretty sure that this is just a sales gimmick used to put me under a time crunch and commit to something quickly. I say that because it sounded like the other job in the area that was referenced was in Everett, live in Seattle. Also something that rubbed me the wrong way was how they kept asking about my wife, wanting to know her name and when she would be home. I can only assume they want to be able to give us both the sales pitch, however it was off putting and I didn't like it. Conclusion: They might have done a fine job on the deck but I won't be giving my business to a company like this.
Description of Work: They sent someone out to measure and give me a bid for a deck replacement.

Response from Polar Bear Exterior Solutions, Inc
You are 100% correct when you said Polar Bear would have done a fine job on the deck should you have given us your business. We understand the inherent pressure involved in making a large home-improvement investment, so our main objective is to reduce the risk and pressure for customers as much as possible. We didn't mean to cause any further stress you may have taken from the experience. The deck we were bidding for you was quite complicated and the rep who came out to see you was somewhat inexperienced. To get all of our customers the best possible deal, we like to be thorough with pricing projects out. With decks the problem is compounded because there are so many variables structurally and aesthetically that we have to consider from erosion issues and the slope of the ground to the placement of hard rails and planter boxes. There were also several different options that you were considering and he consulted his manager for his opinion on how we could best do your project. There is no standard price for a deck because so many things have to be considered, and that is why our estimator had to keep calling in to his manager. We apologize if it made you feel uncomfortable, he was just trying to get you the best value and safest completed project. We want to do everything we can to alleviate the pressure that inevitably comes with these big home improvement projects, so we offer all of our customers a one-year bid that we can leave behind based on expected costs of labor and materials up to a year from now. We have discounts available based on the size of the project, volume discounts we get from our manufacturer, whether or not we have to arrange a loan, manufacturers seasonal promotions, financing incentives from our lenders, etc. If we are able to get any efficiencies or savings in getting a project done, we pass those savings on to our customers. We did not mean to offend you asking about your wife. We offer free inspections and no-obligation bids for all of our customers, all we ask is that anyone who is a part of the decision be there so we can make sure we are making the most out of all of our time. With projects like decks when there is so much to consider with design, materials, finish, etc. we want to make sure we are getting all of the information right the first time....especially as minor changes can be big price differences. We also often times need to prepare plans that would be appropriate for a building inspector or city permitting office to approve before contracting on any work. This process can be rather time consuming for our office and all we ask is that everyone who is a decision-maker give their input before we invest our time and money to prepare a design, that way we are not needlessly having to redo this process. We appreciate your feedback and we will take it to heart. We are constantly striving to better serve our customers and potential customers alike and we will work with this estimator and do what we can to improve as a company.

Removed all the old siding, replaced with new Hardie siding and Hardie shingle siding. Work performed as bid with fine attention to detail -- trim, field siding, finish caulking, etc. Cleaned the work area every day at completion of the day's work. Left work site clean after completion of the job. All the installers that worked on the site were very professional and in good humor. Always seemed to be enjoying their work. Forrest was on the job the entire two weeks and was always helpful and working as were the rest of the crew. The grounds and plantings were left as undisturbed as possible given the scope of the task.

They didn't asked for any money. I like their customer service. They're very good. I live in a forest and my roof has to be clean at least once or twice a year. I couldn't find any reliable person to do it and they said that they would do it. They did it without a charge. They put the roof on two years ago. I would recommend to anybody to hire them.
Description of Work: I used Polar Bear. They came over to clean my roof.

Nate Harrington and crew are just the kind of people you want to know and work with. Their bid was comparable/identical to bids I had already received for replacing the siding (and was still trying to get over the sticker shock). But it was time to swallow the cost and do some repairs--the siding was heavily damaged by woodpeckers and there was suspected water leakage and carpenter ant damage--which the tear out proved. We did not expect to find the deck completely rotted, but it was (under the siding material, where you couldn't see it). So the job expanded from original siding to several other repairs and tasks. But we're so, so glad we did this work and we're so, so glad Nate and crew were the ones to do it. Every employee from those doing demolition to siding to roofing to painting were extremely professional, kind, and dedicated...the type of people who seem to like what they do, are proud to do quality work (and know what it is), and look forward to coming to work every day (or put on a good face and fooled me! No, really, everyone was extremely pleasant every day). I work at home so was around most of the time and saw the work every day and documented with photos. Owner was on site a couple times to check with me personally during the 4-5 month job (remember, the tasks expanded due to rotting discovered). They did a good job of juggling my job with other jobs while waiting for materials, etc. The communication lagged sometimes and the last finishing work lagged behind by a month or two, but nothing I was overly concerned about (and held back last 10% of payment until the job was 100% complete--maybe should have held back 20%, but everything turned out 110%). They made sure I was happy with the finished job. I've been a homeowner for over 30 years and have worked with several new construction, remodeling, and landscape architects and contractors and Polar Bear is up there with the best of companies in the construction industries. Hire these guys. You won't be sorry.
Description of Work: Tore off old siding (elastomeric aka "fake stucco"), including repairing one side of house from dry rot and carpenter ant damage due to old leak in siding and rebuilding a portion of the roof to eliminate leaking architectural feature (instead turning it into part of the roof). Wrapped house and added Hardi-Plank siding and trim. Tore off old wood deck (which was collapsing due to woodpecker/bird damage and subsequent leaking into the support beams) and old wood porch (including fiberglass/glass rails on both) and built new Trex deck and Trex porch (including new fiberglass/glass rails). Tore off old gutters and facia, replaced new facia, painted new facia, replaced gutters. Painting as needed (primarily doors). Replaced 5 outdoor light fixtures and any affected outdoor electrical fixtures. Put back light sensor switch (and it still works).
