Our heat stopped working. Bel-red came out promptly. Our house is 5 yrs old. Bel-red sales person spent a long time (2 hrs) assessing our current heater. They said it was installed incorrectly when the house was built and said we would need to replace the unit. Cost was $7k. We got 2 other estimates. The third company that came out showed us that we had a bad circuit board (area was visibly burnt out when they pulled it off) and recommended we replace just the board. Our heat now works. Bel-red never showed us the board. I felt that they recommended the most expensive thing they could do just to get a sale. I have used Bel-red for yearly furnace cleaning, but they were by far the most expensive estimate (the 2nd company also told us to replace our heater but that estimate was $2K less).

We're sorry to hear that you were not satisfied with our diagnostic service, but we do stand behind our findings. Our Service Manager has called you in order to refund your diagnostic fee, and to schedule a time for us to verify the results. This is critical, as our initial examination of your system indicated that the heat exchangers had failed. This is a serious problem that can result in Carbon Monoxide poisoning. While there may also have been an issue with your circuit board, our technician did not have to look past the heat exchanger and installation issues to recognize that your furnace could not be safely repaired in a way that made economic sense, which is why he recommended replacement. We strongly recommend turning off your furnace until this diagnosis can be verified (which we have offered to do at no cost). As for the price of a replacement furnace from us vs. another contractor, there are a lot of options for furnaces, and we can't speak to why ours was more expensive. We match our recommended system to your needs, and provide a high quality installation with the best guarantees available. If you do decide to replace your furnace, we would ask that you give us the opportunity to review our proposal with you so that we can explain our pricing, and offer you other options if you need a less expensive replacement system.

there did a great job, but it was the hugh final cost that really bothered me,
Description of Work: there service was excellent, but the estimate was far less then the actual cost, the cost was way over and i was shocked that it cost so much and i sure did not like that shock.

Very well. They were prompt or even early, polite, wore covers for their shoes, and were knowledgeable. They admitted the problem wasn't what they originally thought but stayed with it until they did find out what it was. Their prices were very reasonable. I have no problem highly recommending them!
Description of Work: Our Rheem air handler and heat pump were purchased from and installed by Aire Force Heating. Our heating went out on 12/4. Their technician, Amor, came out on 12/5 and said the fuse was blown and charged $146. The heating went off again on 12/9. Amor came out the same day, spent an hour and a half before proclaiming he didn't know what was wrong with it and we should call an electrician. That's it. He just left. I called Bel-Red Energy and they came out the next day, Saturday, and thought the problem may be rats chewing through a wire. They charged regular rates, not weekend rates, and were punctual, polite, and on time. They had a master electrician come out who spent several hours and found that the problem was the defrost control panel. They had to order it but they set up the heater so we finally had heat. The part came in and they fixed it for a reasonable price. He actually arrived early and had most of it done before I got home. He just needed to do a final testing when I arrived. The heating has been working ever since. They are good people who know their stuff. I would stay away from Air Force Heating since they can't even fix their own installations.

We had Bel-Red come out for a yearly tune up. They got us scheduled quickly and the tech arrived on time. While the tech was there he told me that I would need to replace the capacitor on my fan and that I would need to replace my igniter. The capacitor was going to cost $167 and the igniter was going to be $331. He mentioned he could do them at the time but if I declined and they had to come back out it would cost me a service fee. This made me feel like I was being sold to instead of advised so I decided to decline and look into it. It appears the capacitor does need to be changed but I will handle that since it is two screws and two cables to save $100. The tech told me my igniter needed to test between 40-90 ohms and documented it on his invoice. After reading through my documentation I found out that my igniter was fine testing from 50-450 ohms. http://0190acd.netsolhost.com/manuals/G40UH_Series.pdf page 20. I looked up the igniter part and found it for around $60 so when I thought Bel Red was trying to charge me $330 to replace a $60 part that takes 5 min to change I was not happy. I called them and told them the situation and asked that they would refund a fee for a program I enrolled in since I now did not want the service done next year. They gave me that refund. The next day a Service Manager called and said his people had mentioned to him what had happened and he had also seen my previous review on Angie's List. He explained that the tech made a mistake in diagnosing my igniter and that it was indeed fine. He mentioned the cost comes from them using a much better quality igniter that is meant to last but that this igniter would not have worked right in my furnace but might have worked for a couple of weeks. He told me for my inconvenience that they would refund the entire fee for the service call. I appreciate them owning up to their mistake and making it right but I did not like the fact that my service call felt as much like a sales call so I will opt to not use Bel Red again.

While our goal is to complete every call perfectly, we know that is not possible, which is why we guarantee every repair we make - taking responsibility for any issues and fixing mistakes quickly. As you noted, our technician did make a mistake, which we took responsibility for. He was unaware the igniter in question was unique to this manufacturer and was allowed a much higher ohm rating before failure. Our technician diagnosed the igniter at 258 ohms which is 2X higher than most manufacturers’ recommendations. He recommended replacement based on this. The part he recommended was a high quality silicon nitride igniter – which is an upgrade from the standard part, with better quality and reliability. As noted, when we were made aware of our mistake, we apologized and thanked you for bringing it to our attention. We refunded the cost of the otherwise complete and accurate maintenance for the honest mistake, with our apologies. We're sorry that you will not be choosing to do business with us again, but invite you to call on us again, and give us another opportunity to show you what we can do, should the opportunity arise.

They wanted to replace a furnace that did not need to be replaced. I am a Realtor and so I end up calling different people to get different things done for the various client houses. Every time I used them they keep saying that the furnace needs to be replaced. That did not make any sense. If they do the work that needs to be done and don't say that they have to replace the furnace I would say they do a pretty decent job. They are all different guys so it depends. Their prices are a little higher than everybody else. As regards being responsive they come pretty fast so that is good. As for professionalism if you don't want to avail yourself then that is not good. I will not use them in the future.

As was stated, it has been quite some time since we serviced a furnace for this customer, since 1999 to be exact. When we serviced the furnace at their old address, it had cracks in the heat exchangers, a potentially life-threatening problem. In many of these cases we recommend replacement of the furnace, as it is more cost effective to replace it and get a new, higher efficiency furnace with a full warranty, than to do this extensive of a repair. The problem is, however, repairable, and it is obvious that is the route they chose to go. In the end, our goal is always to provide our customers with the information they need to make an informed decision. From the fact that they did not replace the furnace, it is obvious that we did not pressure them into replacement, and we are glad that they made the decision they felt was right for them. While we have thousands of very satisfied customers every year, we can not be all things to all people, and ultimately we are glad that they found a provider who was a better fit for their needs.

We have an ongoing annual contract with them to inspect and service our furnace. We think they are one of the better reputable companies. We've had good ongoing service with them. They call us and remind us when it is time for service, which is a really good thing. They troubleshoot problems ahead of time so we don't end up without a furnace in the winter. We are pretty happy with them.

I paid them about $800. I had used them in the past, and I was satisfied with their service. They arrived in a timely manner. They are always careful about putting on booties when they come in and out of the house. They always clean up. They were communicative. There was a question about the bill, and they called me. The office staff called me to confirm that we have gotten a discount that we had discussed. I think they seemed knowledgeable, and they had the resources they needed to do the job. They are probably more expensive than some, but reliable.

The lesson to be learned from all this. Get competitive estimates!
Description of Work: After having the floor above the crawl space insulated we asked BelRed for an estimate to renovate the duct work. Their proposal came to $ 5,000 incl tax. No mention was made of the need for clean up, disinfect and air seal the crawl space and rodent control. The estimate only stated that the customer will ensure that the work areas are clear of obstacles. We only learned about the urgent additional work required when two installers from BelRed came to start the renovation of the heating ducts and pipes. After 5 minutes in the crawl space they informed us that they cannot do the work as they are getting nauseated from the odors caused by rat infestation. A few days later a Home Energy Consultant from BelRed came to our residence and gave us an estimate for cleaning, initial rodent control and weatherization of the crawl space. It came to another $ 2,000 incl. tax. An unsolicited "maintenance contract" of $ 80/mo. would have added a further $ 1,000/yr to the cost The total bill now being way over $ 7,000 incl tax we became hesitant to have the work done by BelRed and requested an estimate from another company which afterward executed the work professionally and to our satisfaction for somewhat more than half the cost quoted by BelRed. The rodent control we entrusted to Terminix which charged $ 117 initial work and then $ 80/quarterly for continued pest control (total $ 351 incl. tax for first year). In short, way less of an expense than quoted by BelRed. The sequence of events, first an estimate without mentioning the rat infestation which required costly clean up etc., then two installers came without the necessary materials (air masks, replacement flex pipes) in their truck and announced after a few minutes that "it looks very bad" in the crawl space and that they cannot do the work., finally an estimate for the additional work which included rodent control for $ 400 and proposed a "maintenance contract" for $80/mo. made us wonder whether this escalation was just coincidence.

We guarantee all of our duct work for life, and as we told you when you asked us to lower the price, we were not willing to cut corners to make it less expensive. As for the rodent infestation, we did advise you of the need to address it up-front, but as the scope of the problem had become considerably worse between the time we provided our initial estimate, and when we came out to do the work, it was no longer possible for us to complete the work without the infestation being addressed first. We offer pest control as a courtesy to our customers, and as such, we are not going to be least expensive provider of this service. We do, however, guarantee the quality of the work 100%. In the end, you chose not to work with us, and we hope that was the right choice for you. We recognize that we can not be all things to all people, and while we're sorry that we could not satisfy your price concerns, we wish you the best of luck with the providers you did choose.

I spent $200 on their last visit. They came and did the job they were meant to do. I have no complaints but there is nothing special. If fixing something is expensive that needs fixing they tell us it is optional and they did give it to us. There is nothing negative about them.

We have used them for years. They charged us $279.00 plus tax. My husband used them way back before I even met him when he was working at a church. They have done great service when there were problems and they weren't sure if part of it was their fault. They took care of it and didn't charge us for it because they couldn't prove that it was something we had done. Whenever possible, they let us know about warranties that are available that could be used when there has been damage. They look after you. They do their best to do a good job and let you know about some things that you might consider replacing in the future so you can budget for those. We highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Bel-Red Heating & Air Conditioning did the annual maintenance on our furnace and our air-conditioner. We also had them flush out our hot water tank.

Bel-Red came to inspect our house and quote on an appropriate furnace. The sales rep was professional, helpful and explained the options clearly. When we decided to go ahead, they were able to schedule the installation quickly. Two installers came, and they also were friendly and clearly experienced. However they also seemed in a bit of a hurry as this was their last job before the weekend. The Bellevue code inspector who reviewed the installation found it good and complimented some aspects of it as above average. However, about 5 months later we found water was seeping through carpeting in the room next to the furnace, and traced the water to the furnace itself. Bel-Red came to look and found that the installers had broken a plumbing junction on a pump and the pump had probably been leaking the entire time. On the plus side, they acknowledged the problem immediately and fixed it promptly at no charge and without hassle. On the negative, this could have been very damaging. We were lucky that it did not cause serious problems with the floor. Overall Bel-Red is very professional and I recommend them, but their installers apparently did let the quality slip a bit on this job.

It went well overall. The only thing I am not satisfied is that Daniel has to come back again to change one of the parts as the dispatcher did not tell him that parts need to be changed until the day before the service. Daniel needs to order the parts. I wish the dispatcher would let him know as I booked the service 2 weeks ago. They offered 10% discount for changing that parts.
Description of Work: I have the furnace maintained and cleaned up as the last owner has not had the furnace serviced for 8 years. The furnace was very dirty. Daniel cleaned up the furnace thoroughly and have some parts changed. He did a great job.

There was a notice put on the door that the gas line was disconnected. I spotted that and found that was the problem and that is why the furnace was not working. We called them and they sent the same guy who had come initially and he said that we need to pay the bill for that. We were charged for two service calls with them. I called them and told that that I agree with the first service call but not the second as the guy should have noticed this problem. They refused to refund the money. I then decided to replace the furnace but I went with another company. I understand the guy who came was new and he did not know much. However, they did not choose to refund and instead they said they will make sure they send an experienced person the next time. They gave me a $10 credit on my next service. I did not go with them after that as it was a matter of principles and customer service. I escalated the issue I had and it seemed that they did not want to do anything about it.
Description of Work: I used Bel-Red Heating & Air Conditioning a year ago. They have serviced my furnace for few years. The heater was not working and they sent the heater to be checked. It turned out that the gas had been shut off from the gas company and that is why the furnace was not working. The text that came from Bel-Red said that the furnace was broken, and I need to replace an expensive part. Their recommendation was to replace the furnace instead of repairing it. We did have one of their consultants come and give us an estimate. He went around looking at the furnace.

You did not take advantage of this offer then, having your service provided in January instead. In spite of this, we did discount your service from the normal $199 for your furnace and AC tune-up to only $181 (a 10% discount). As for the quality of our service, our technicians carry most of the parts required to perform common repairs, and we have runners available to bring out non-stock parts. We made three repairs to your system that day, and had all required parts on site, or brought to your home, so that you didn't have to stay home another day, potentially missing work, for the repairs to be completed. This is a service that few, if any other service providers offer, and one that provided you an excellent level of service and value for your money. Obviously, we still did not meet your expectations, and if you have any suggestions on what we could have done better, we'd love to hear them. We invite you to call us at your convenience to discuss this further. Otherwise, we hope that you will reconsider using us again in the future.

The sales people were straightforward but not pushy. They had a zero percent interest deal going if I paid it off by a certain date. The workman came on time, did the job, were pleasant and explained everything well. I have had Bel Red maintaining my old heater for years and have always had a good exerience with them. I would definitely go to them again.

The salesman came out and talked with me about the pros and cons of installing a heat pump. Although my gas furnace (which they also installed ten years ago) meets my needs most of the time, several recent periods of extremely hot weather prompted me to add the heat pump for air conditioning and additional heating efficiency. The tax credit was an extra incentive. The project took two days - one for installation and one for startup of the system. I was off-site for much of the time, but they took care to impact my house and yard as little as possible, and took time to explain the system to me when I returned. I was happy with the work and appreciate their annual reminder to have the system cleaned and tuned. So far I have had no problems, and am sure they will be right there if I need them.
Description of Work: Bel-Red installed a heat pump to my existing gas furnace. They also added three new air ducts that I had wanted for a long time, but never had done - one in an unheated/as-yet unfinished attic room and two in a family room that previously only had a wood stove for heat.

We had a bad experience with them. For ten years we had their twice-yearly contractual agreement when they would come out and check everything, and make sure that everything was running great. We had problems over the years but nothing they did not take care of and we paid for it and things like that, but then our furnace started really breaking down it seemed and they came out probably three times. A couple of times their person had made a mistake and they replaced the part that their person had installed incorrectly. We continued to have problems with the furnace breaking down. Finally they contacted us and said that they would fix it one more time and after that they would not want to do business with us anymore because it was costing them money. Even after being loyal customers and paying the twice-yearly fee, they said they would not want to deal with us anymore. They made a couple of mistakes and it was not working out the way they expected it to. So we contacted another provider to come out and look at the furnace and tell if we needed a new furnace to get a second opinion. He came out and spent ten minutes down in our basement and when he came upstairs he refused to charge us for the visit and said that it was something very simple. He put the right screws on it and two years later we have never had a problem with the furnace again. He fixed it for free. Bel-Red was so unprofessional in saying that if anything went wrong with the furnace again, they would not like to deal with us. I think they were fixing it wrong and their mistake was costing them money. We paid I think $69 for a year, it was kind of a maintenance fee that we paid where they would come out in the winter and clean and vacuum everything out and things like that. The price was average. Initially we liked their responsiveness very much but eventually it became bad. We did not like their professionalism based on how things ended. We would absolutely not use them in the future. UPDATE: As of july 18, 2012, over three years from the time of this original report, our old furnace is running great. This required a bolt and the service of a great technician from another company. Bel-Red's response suggested the only solution was to replace our old furnace and that has proven to be wrong. I invite Bel-Red to come out and confirm this at any time. We always knew there was a simple, inexpensive solution and we have been proven correct.

We’re sorry that, after all of the efforts we made to assist you, at no charge to you, you felt that the service we provided did not meet your expectations. Due to the chronic and recurring nature of the problems you were experiencing with a furnace that we did not sell to you or install, we recommended multiple times to you that the furnace be replaced, which you declined. We made multiple repairs, which are detailed below, even consulting with the factory to find some resolution. We ultimately advised you that, while we would be willing to continue servicing your system, we could no longer warranty the same repair over-and-over, as the problem was inherent to the furnace design and would re-occur. As we made clear to you, there were multiple design flaws in your furnace: the original motor was too small to handle the weight of the wheel and would burn out quickly, the mounts for the motor were not sturdy enough to handle the weight of the motor and wheel and would crack and break often. In addition, the bolts holding the motor in place would easily strip out causing the motor to fall to the side and rub on the housing, damaging the wheel and burning out the motor. We had replaced the motor and wheel a total of 5 times over many years of service and we also replaced several broken motor mounts as well as upsizing the stripped out bolts with larger, sturdier ones. All but 2 of the blower assemblies were replaced at no charge to you including the additional labor to uninstall and reinstall the circuit board, the drains and tubing, and all other electronic components, even though we inherited a bad product from the previous servicer. We also performed a free heat exchanger coil and component cleaning prior to the motors being replaced (a $302 value) to compensate you for an unrelated misdiagnosis. Having determined a problem with the design of the blower and the inevitable problems it would have over the remainder of the life of the furnace, we informed you of this condition and let you know after our last full replacement of all components and bolts, at no charge, that we could no longer warranty the parts on subsequent visits when the condition returns. This was not due to the workmanship of the technicians that had performed the repairs, but a design flaw and our full expectation that the condition would return. At the time you were very understanding and grateful for all of the free work we had given. We in no way indicated that we would not service you, only that if you continued with the current furnace and the same problem persisted, we would charge normally for the repairs. We conducted a courtesy follow up with you 9 months after our last repair and were told the equipment was still functioning normally at that time and no additional service was needed. It is evident from your notes that the condition did arise again after this contact due to a visit by another service provider to correct it. We did everything possible to bring the highest level of customer service and quality to the services we performed. Eventually we were forced to concede that the problems are inherent to the equipment and can’t be remedied with more parts. The best solution is still to consider a replacement unit.

The serviceman was professional, friendly and prompt. He performed an annual tune-up for our furnace and cleaned our air cleaner cells. Their rates for the maintenance work seem reasonable. I was disappointed in what felt like pressure to sell us more as we just purchased a new furnace, air cleaner, condensation pump and hot water heater a year ago and we have been loyal customers of theirs for years. It was recommended that we purchase some tabs to help keep our condensation pump free of algae and bacterial growth as a preventative measure. We were never made aware of a problem with these kinds of issues over the last 10 years, but at the recommendation of the service tech, we decided to go ahead with it. Later I found the same tabs online for almost a third of the price. This may have been a wholesale price (I am not sure.), but it did not leave me feeling very happy about the purchase of these tabs. In dealing with this company in the past, I have not had the experience of feeling I was in a pressure sell position, so hopefully this was just an anomaly. My experience with Bel-Red is that the technical work is quality work and they do quality work.

Tech quickly diagnosed and resolved the issue, gave us some good advice for preventing further break-downs.
Description of Work: Our AC went off on one of the hottest days of the summer, on a weekend! We called for emergency service, agreed to pay the upcharge for off-hours surgery. The tech came the next day (a long line of requests ahead of us). In the interim we had called multiple other companies, and one were able to give us emergency service.
