We woke up to a cold house with the furnace not running. After checking out a few things I called Blue Flame as they had done gas line repairs for me before and I was happy with their work. Since this is Seattle I did not want to treat it as an emergency and called at the start of regular hours. They suggested a few things to try first to save a visit but said they could have a tech out late that morning. I did need the tech and he arrived shortly before noon after calling to let me know he was on his way (I had asked for that). He was courteous, diagnosed the issues quickly and told me how to avoid such a problem in the future. I told him my daughter thought the furnace was making funny sounds and he said he could do a complete cleaning and inspection for $50 over the minimum visit charge so I went with it.
Description of Work: Fixed our inoperative furnace (bad thermostat contacts and weak batteries) then did a complete inspection and cleaning at my request.

The initial technician showed me the problem and took CO2 readings. While he did advise me that we need a new furnace, he helped keep it in perspective letting me know that our CO2 readings were extremely low and that we could delay if need be. | |We also had someone from the installation department come give us a free estimate for replacing the furnace. He went over multiple options with use and even examined duct issues we're having in multiple rooms. Overall I was impressed with their professionalism and appreciated being treated like a person rather than a $$. | |We have not yet had the furnace replaced, but plan to hire them to do so this summer.

We received several bids and Blue Flame was competitively priced, their bid was detailed and complete, and they had the best mix of products for our needs. Spent considerable time educating us on our options, the size of furnace needed for our house and helping us compare their bid to others we were considering. Some other companies tried to sell us furnaces that were too big for our house. Blue Flame refused to put that size of a furnace in our house. Installer did excellent work and built a custom metal base for the furnace to improve access for maintenance and repair (old furnace was installed behind a post in the garage). Work was completed quickly and professionally. Furnace and water tank work great. Haven't had any problems for 2.5 years.

I woke up to find cold air coming out of our HVAC registers. After looking at the thermostat and taking the panel off my Trane furnace, I found that the furnace was throwing a "high limit condition" error code. After Googling, I learned that this was most likely due to a clogged air filter or the limit sensor being tripped. However, because I have a Nest thermostat (which has been working fine for the past year) and there appeared to be a possibility that it was incompatible with the second stage heat of the furnace, I decided to get professional help. Blue Flame is a Trane dealer and Nest installer so I gave them a call. They were very courteous on the phone and offered me an appointment for Monday for $99, or an evening on-call appointment for $199. I ended up taking the evening appointment since I needed heat! The technician called before arriving early in the 3 hour window and reset the limit sensor and tested the furnace operation. I asked him to verify the thermostat wiring, the air filters and also that the correct amount of heat was coming out of the registers, which he did. Best of all, he charged the $99 call out fee!

I called in the afternoon because the blower worked but no heat. They were able to come the next morning and gave me a 8-12 window. The technician called at 9ish to say he'd be there in half an hour or so. He arrived on time, was efficient and neat. The ignitor was bad, replacing that costs ~$230. The trip & diagnostic fee was $99. I chose to sign up for the pre paid maintenance plan for $179 which covered this trip and next year's maintenance. The $99 fee was waived because I did the prepaid plan. Total (before tax) came to $373. Later I had a question about the prepaid plan which was cleared up with a phone call. Overall good service and the price seems in line with other sources I checked.

The technician failed to arrive in the 4 hour (3 hour?) window established by the appointment made ... it was a morning appointment, I assume 8 a.m to 12 pm but possibly 9 a.m to 12 p.m. Regardless, as noon approached (and since I had other obligations to honor), I called "call service" to report my concerns that no-one had arrived (and it was close to 15 minters before noon at that point). I specifically asked to be called back if the technician was not arriving before noon. I was told I would get a call back - I believe, regardless but, perhaps that is because that is what I wanted to hear. Noon arrived without any call back. 1 p.m. arrived without any call back. A short while after 1 p.m. the technician did arrive at my doorstep. I was not pleased - I was on the point of leaving for an appointment that could be (and was) cancelled ... like ditching a friend. He apologized but, the bottom line is that I called the call center before noon asking to be informed if the appointment time was not going to be met, informing that I had an appointment to make, myself, and the call center PROMISED I would be called back IF the noon-end deadline was going to be missed. I GOT NO PHONE CALL. I just got a tech showing up after he took his lunch hour ... about 70 minutes after noon. He apologized, said it was his mistake but the call center did not call back to allow me to cancel on an appointment that "they" (the company" failed to meet the timelines. Apparently there were emergencies (cold weather) but this no-show was on top of two no-shows by Out Today for the same basic, non-emergent furnace care ... (tune up/cleaning). So, yes, my appointment was about routine (for both companies) but I had to arrange to stay home for a 4 hour (it might have been a 3 hour window) with zero delivery on the part of the company and zero communication, to boot, when I gave them the opportunity to NOT totally p*** me off (like let me know they were missing their 4/3 hour window and allow me the chance to reschedule). (Instead I cancelled my obligation). Blue Flame then tried to sell me on a "furnace protection" plan (with service to other modules - the hot water heater, I believe). I tried Blue Flame after "Out Today" ditched me two times in a row for "emergencies" (That was Blue Flame's excuse for being late. It did not address why no-one called me back re: my phone call to question if anyone was going to arrive before 12 noon on that day but ..) My concern/point is that both these firms are selling "furnace and hot water preventative care" packages to customers and these packages probably seem like a bargain but, if you are a customer of one of their contractual packages for a one-year care service, then you are likely better off looking for a furnace service company that is not into cash flow over actual (and timely) service delivery.
