Tony and Affordable repeatedly, over and over again, superseded my expectations. This company leaves them all in the dust. If your reading this, and have been patient enough to be at this part (I realize this is probably the longest review ever), there is nothing I can say that will do this company justice. Do yourself a favor, and, at the very least, call them and get an estimate. They took such good care of me, and will take good care of you to.
Description of Work: I hired Affordable Abatement to tear down my deceased father’s house. Here’s the catch: My father was a hoarder, not to mention extremely paranoid. Ever watch, “Hoarding, Buried Alive”? I’ve yet to see a hoarder on that show that can beat my dad. For a while, my brother and I tried cleaning it out, but gave up. The mess and the stench was to overwhelming. I was ready to throw in the towel; just have it torn down, mess and all, and hauled away. I made some inquirees with people I knew and got a few recommendations for contractors that did residential demolition. I have to tell you, if you’ve never done this before, it’s harder then you think to find someone competent; that really knows what they’re doing. The first guy I called in the summer of 2010, long before we were ready, but I wanted to get a feel for the cost. He came back surprisingly low (probably to low) because when called him back a year later, I couldn’t get him to return my calls; left several messages and sent several emails – even said that I would understand if the old estimate needed to be revised because so much time had past. The 2nd guy I called was nice enough, gave me his estimate, and advised me I’d need to have the house checked for asbestos, which he was not licensed to do. He also advised me that I needed to have the septic tank decommissioned. Based on that advise, I made some other calls to plumbers; all of which came back at about $1000 as an estimate (remember this – I’ll get back to it later). Sooo…knowing I needed to have the house inspected, I went on the Washington Clean Energy website who provides a list of companies that can test and do asbestos abatement (at the time, I thought they were one in the same. They’re not). A couple places I called mentioned that they would like to bid on the demolition as well as the asbestos testing/abatement. Tony from Affordable Abatement was one of them, and also one other. Tony was a pro from the start; always called right back, did the inspection the next day, and emailed me his estimate which included very specific details as to what’s included (including using existing soil to fill in the basement and separated out the costs for the asbestos testing and abatement). The other place sounded great…at first. They to were quick to give me an estimate, although it wasn’t nearly as detailed as Affordable’s. They were a little cheaper then Affordable’s with the abatement, and allot cheaper with the demo, but here’s where you really need to be careful. 1st, the asbestos testing (Talking about the “other” company here): They were supposed to do it the next day, however, I didn’t hear from them, nor the next day, or the day after that. I sent an email. No response. Sent another email. Still no response. Called and left a message. Finally got a response the following week. They felt so bad about being late they offered to wave the fees, which, I admit, got them back in my good graces. It also occurred to me that I should make sure they’re estimate included everything Affordable’s did. Good thing, too, because it wasn’t even close, which explains why their’s came in so much lower. If I wanted the basement filled, they were going to have to give me a new estimate. They went there, said they’d send off the samples, and should have test results in about a week and would get me a revised estimate. A week came and went and I didn’t hear from them, so here we go again – sent emails, made phone calls, and about a week later, finally got an email with an attachment, that was supposed to be the revised estimate, except, when I opened it, it was so tiny, you couldn’t read it. Not sure what program they used, but you couldn’t enlarge it or do anything. I replied to the email, told them I couldn’t read the attachment, and asked if they could resend it using a different program. A couple days later, I got another email, but with the same (useless) attachment. Again, I replied that it was to tiny to be ledgeable. The woman I spoke with couldn’t figure out what she was doing wrong, and asked if she could just fax it, which was fine, and which she did, except…no estimate. Just the asbestos test results. At that point, although I was glad to have the test results, I gave up on them. I called Tony from Asbestos, he immediately emailed me the contract, which I signed, and also sent him the permit application from the City of Bothell (where the house is). Now, remember when I said one of the other guys said I would need to have the septic decommissioned, and it was going to cost $1000 to do that? Here’s the thing:: Decommissioned ain’t good enough for Bothell. They want it removed. Had I had it decommissioned, I would have wasted $1000. I told this to Tony who said he could take care of that too. I faxed the application into the City of Bothell on a Friday. The very next morning, I got a call from the Bothell Fire Department. The house had burned down. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but now the house was completely unsafe. Bothell wanted it torn down ASAP. I called Tony, and he was on it that very next Monday – would have been ready to start the next Tuesday, but Bothell wasn’t quite ready as I needed a couple special permits from them also. There is so much more then you could ever imagine to tearing a house down, but Tony knew it all – truly an old pro; he knew exactly what to do with L&I, and when the subject of my dad’s oil tank came up (I’d actually forgotten about that part), even handled that too. That’s the thing about Affordable; they can do EVERYTHING – Asbestos, oil tank removal, septic tank removal, house demo (and they’ll know what you need without you having to ask), oh, and get this – one thing I wanted was a stepping stone I’d remembered finding when I was a child. My intention was to find it myself, but when I mentioned what I was doing, 2 guys off of that crew dropped everything and spent 2 hours trying to find that d*** stone. We never did, but I was so deeply touched at the effort they put into it, I d*** near cried.
