James and his crew at Cox Custom Remodeling did a great job with our bathroom remodel. Our house was built in 1900 and the nonstandard framing made things more complicated. His lead, Dan was particularly great, taking the extra time to understand components we picked that were new to him. James always had a positive attitude, showed up when he indicated and got things done. Low dust, protection for floors and respect for the rest of the house while the construction was going on. James also provided the best tile guy, Eugene, that did a fantastic job with natural stone and the complicated very fragile mosaic. We would definitely use Cox Custom Remodeling again. Great job guys!

I had heard horror stories from friends and family in regards to their experience with contractors and remodeling projects. My remodeling experience with James was wonderful! He is organized, reliable, reasonable and positive. I appreciated his style of open communication and can-do attitude. He remodeled our kitchen, put new flooring in, painted all walls, replaced vanities in our bathrooms and replaced the windows in our entire house. His subcontractors were reliable and friendly. I originally found him on Angie's list and saw his good reviews. He did not disappoint. I would encourage you to hire him for your next project.

This is my second review for Cox Custom Remodeling and once again I have to give them an A+. This project was an unexpected master bathroom remodel that was required when we discovered our tile floor had a large spongy spot. My husband is disabled and can only use our master bathroom. When James (owner) evaluated the situation and knew that he would have to rip up the floor, he offered to do it while we were on vacation and have it completed upon our return. Since I had past experience with James, I completely trusted him to do this. We were not disappointed. It turned out to be a lot more work than originally anticipated with several rotten floor joists and a leak discovered behind the shower. James and his crew worked diligently including over the weekend, to be sure that it was completed when we arrived home from vacation. He took pictures to show us the damage they found and kept me updated on the progress. We wound up having to replace all the tile in our large double shower and the floor throughout the bathroom. We replaced a glass bock wall with large glass panels, and we put in a new toilet and new shower fixtures. James’ crew and subcontractors are excellent and we were very happy with their work. All of the people associated with Cox Custom Remodeling have proven to be reliable, professional, and good at what they do. James always makes sure that any problems that come up are resolved to his customers’ satisfaction. He is consistently on or under time and budget. Can’t wait until we have another project we can hire him for!

James and the Cox Custom Remodeling crew did an outstanding job on my remodel project despite the fact that I changed scope significantly multiple times during the work. The project began with a fairly modest goal to make an exterior covered deck a bit more resistant to wind and rain by adding side walls, but after the initial bid I asked if it would be possible to turn the deck into the equivalent of an interior room that could be used year-round. James presented a number of different options that were cost-effective and could be accomplished without significant structural changes to the house as I wanted to avoid major alterations if possible, and the team was able to deliver a 4-season room in just over 2 months of work (and with several more changes I added during construction) that's perfectly integrated into the original design of the building. The new room has become the focal point of the house. The crew also completed a full bathroom remodel, added several new window openings, and completed some other projects during the ~10 weeks of construction, but the new room is really what showcased the Cox Custom Remodeling expertise and ingenuity on this project. Before and after pictures attached.

James and his crew were able to take care of all of my requests or sub contracted with those who could. They replace my outside decking and stairs with Trex. I had them back to refinish my frontroom hardwoods and replace my front stairway with hardwood for which they hired excellent sub contractors. They designed and installed a bannister on this stairway. They replaced two ceilings with shiplap. They remodeled my upstairs bathroom sub contracting out the tile, plumbing and wiring. The sub contractors were excellent. as well. James helped me visualize what I wanted done in my home and then made it happen. I can't say enough good things about James and his Crew.

Cox Custom Remodeling is outstanding. James Cox is the owner and project manager and he is everything you hope a contractor will be. I cannot imagine having a better remodeling experience nor can I imagine working with a better group of professionals. I found James through Angie's List and I got estimates from a total of three contractors. The first time I called him I had to leave him a voicemail and he called me back within 10 minutes. He was professional and set up an appointment to come see my project the next day. He showed up not just on time, but a little early. He listened well, understood what I wanted and what my concerns were. He explained to me how he works, and how he estimates jobs. Initially, I had just called him about a bathroom remodel. I knew I was going to remodel my kitchen next, but I wanted to just start with my bathroom. I got a good feeling about James so I asked him to look at my kitchen while he was there. I told him my ideas for my kitchen remodel. Both my bathroom and kitchen projects included completely gutting the rooms and starting from scratch. He told me that the bathroom would take about two weeks to complete and the kitchen would take about four weeks. Then I gave him a challenge and asked him if it would be possible to have both completed by the time of my daughter's high school graduation party which was less than three months away. He said it would be tight but he was confident he could do it as long as I held up my end, which included making timely decisions and getting appliances, fixtures, and tiles on site by the time they were ready to go. He emailed me a detailed estimate the following day. James estimates based on time and materials. He doesn't just give a single price that he claims he can get the project done on. The other two contractors I got bids from were professional and also claimed they could get both remodels done in my tight timeframe. One bid was lower, but there were no details included in the quote, just an overall price, the other took two weeks to get me an estimate and was higher. Once I decided to hire James’ company, things moved quickly. James advised me that the best thing I could do to ensure the project finished on time was to have all my appliances and fixtures on site before they began work and I took his advice to heart. I told him I wanted to do my own demo and painting. (I wound up not finishing either and he and his crew happily completed those jobs.) His work crew was great: Richie, Steven, and Craig. Super friendly, professional, helpful, and flexible. James’ subcontractors are all people he has worked with on many projects and have been tested and proven. He has an excellent relationship with a cabinet maker who is local, reliable, and fast. He’s also a great value and very flexible. The plumber, electrician, tile-layer, and floor refinisher were also top-notch. Every person who worked on our project was reliable, efficient, highly competent, personable, and customer-service oriented. Everyone showed up when they said they would and did what they promised. I was home during almost all the work and they were in constant motion. They started work on May 10th and were entirely done on June 13th. Amazing! They would have been done earlier had it not been for hold-ups on my end, i.e. not deciding on my cabinet layout more quickly, being a week late to pick out my countertops, not buying enough tile for my tub surround, and not doing all the painting I said I would do, not to mention the many times I changed my mind or added in something unexpected. None of my friends believed it would be finished on time and they were very impressed. James went to great lengths to make sure that they completed the work in time for our party and he surpassed his goal. Oh, and did I mention that he also came in under-budget?! How is it that a good contractor is even available so quickly when so many are entirely booked up with new construction? Cox Custom Remodeling specializes in remodels and additions and James is an awesome scheduler and project manager. He knows how to use his crews most efficiently so that he is able to work on several projects at once. James was always available by phone, email, or text and responded to me very quickly. If I wanted to add or change something, he would tell me what it entailed, and was always agreeable. He would say, “We can do whatever you want,” (so long as I understood how it might impact the budget or schedule.) I love how accommodating he was, and how sensitive he was to my budget and time line. He always made sure I was happy and kept me calm when I wanted to panic. He was very considerate of our family’s needs and took care of many small items that weren’t part of the original scope of work. I have already hired him to do a remodel on another bathroom. James and his company deserve to be wildly successful and I give him my highest recommendation.

We did about a week of demo ourselves prior to James and his crew coming in at the end of June 2017 to do the rest of demo and start repairing our awful sub-floor. Our house has a lot of quirks and likes to throw curveballs at us so we knew it was possible that things would go wrong - especially with putting in 1400 sq ft of heated tile on a very uneven and no where near close to flat subfloor (we could plainly tell from the hills in our previous hardwood). I am thrilled to say that James' team repaired the floor wonderfully so that our dream floor became a beautiful reality! We have three small kids so with such a large remodel, we planned to go out of town for a month during the project. We were very comfortable leaving our house in the crew's capable and trustworthy hands (we had "tested" them out in January 2017 for a smaller project to fill in the sunk-in living room and update our fireplaces). When we returned home for the remainder of the project, all the guys were great with working around our family and the kids even ask when "the guys" are coming back. Of our approximately three month project, the tile installation was the longest (and most expensive) part as it was very time consuming and a huge undertaking. With such a big chunk of change going to one aspect of the project and not having known the quality of Yuriy and Paul previously, while having seen others have such a crappy job done with simple tile-work, it was a big leap of faith to just trust James instead of do extra homework to look into who was going to do the work. James was right and after that we pretty much went with what James said as we were able to consider him a trusted adviser. Needless to say, Yuriy and Paul are great tilers and did an amazing job! The kitchen got the update of my dreams and is the clean, modern and sleek kitchen we had hoped for. While there were a couple of bumps, there was nothing James couldn't remedy and was always happy to make it right. Also, he had to deal with my picky detail-oriented self which he did without complaint, in fact was always happy to meet my silly little nit-picky requests. Our three bathrooms (one with a new tub/shower combo, one with double sinks and giant glass shower enclosure, and final small kid's bathroom with shower that just got an update to cabinetry) look stunning with more cabinet space for storing toiletries and clean counters with undermounted sinks - finally!) I really couldn't be more thrilled with the skill, competence, communication and finished product of our renovation by Cox Custom Remodeling. We are hoping for phase three in the upcoming year which will have James and crew working on the exterior of our house and building out a new entryway and covered living space if all goes to plan!
Description of Work: Remodeled entire 1400 square foot main floor including kitchen, 2 bathrooms (plus 1 on the other level), re-floored entire level with wood-look heated tile, built-in fridge with custom paneling and cabinetry.

James, Craig and Richie became like family for the summer. James worked with us to perfectly time the work for our summer break from school. He listened to our vision for the project, made wise suggestions, always found a way around any problem that arose, and made our dream a reality. It was necessary for us to be out of town a couple of times during the project, but we were very comfortable with James and his crew in our home while we were gone. James worked hard to schedule the subcontractors efficiently, and delays were minimal. He was readily available via text or phone call at all times. We appreciated his fair pricing and detailed billing. James' positive attitude and expertise along with the great group of people he has working with him made this project a success. We definitely will be calling him for any future work.
Description of Work: The entire upper floor of our house was remodeled. This included painting the existing kitchen cabinets, installing quartz counter tops, and tile backsplash. The popcorn ceiling was removed in the main living areas and bedrooms. Hard wood floors were installed throughout the main living areas and tile was installed in the bathroom and entry. Front door was raised to accommodate the tile floor. The rock fire place surround was removed and replaced with tile and a new fireplace surround, The bathroom update included a new tub with a tile surround, vanity and toilet. New doors and existing windows were Shaker style trimmed and new baseboards were installed throughout the entire area. All rooms were painted.

James, Richie and Craig were all great and did an excellent job of tearing down the giant brick fireplace surround and when we ran into issues of major water damage in the chimney, James was able to come up with a plan of attack for fixing it. Since we had to take out the old firebox, we ended up upgrading the fireplace and expanding the project to remove the brick from our lower level fireplace and remedy what water damage also made it down below as well as build out a new fireplace. While we unexpectedly had to expand our scope and solve a huge issue, it still came within the budget James had laid out since he bid for a worst-case scenerio -- so glad he did and we didn't just go with the cheap guys who would have probably made our disastrous and dangerous chimney worse. In the end we were super happy with the way the project turned out and we start phase two - a kitchen remodel and new whole level flooring - next week!
Description of Work: James and his guys started with a "small" project for us of tearing down a brick fireplace surround and filling in our sunk in living room which included raising a sliding door to a balcony as well. This project was the first of a phased remodel to make sure we liked the guys and their work was what we were hoping for after having a bad experience a year before.

James and his team were punctual, timely in their quotes and ordering of materials, and once the materials were delivered they did an outstanding job having them installed. Total cost of the project came in under projection. During the project they were very friendly and personable and were patient with our children asking questions. My wife and I were especially impressed that James came back to adjust the door threshold to ensure that it made a good seal with the sweep. After the project was completed they left the work area cleaner than before the project started. We look forward to using them again on additional projects for our house.

James and his crew arrived promptly at 7 a.m. on day one of the demolition. My husband and I both work outside the home, so we would be leaving these strangers in our house every day for six weeks. At first this made me nervous, but I can say that every single person on James' crew as well as his subcontractors for electrical, gas, plumbing and cabinetry were all top notch. We ran into an issue early on when it became apparent that the wall we wanted removed was load bearing, but we discussed the options with James and his Master Carpenter, Craig, and came up with a solution. Shortly after the project started, we decided to have the electrical panel upgraded and replaced, which was outside of the scope of the original contract. Chris, the Electrician, graciously agreed to fit this work in. Throughout the process, James was always accessible and when minor issues arose (such as the island vent too low caused by a low ceiling or crooked back splash tiles), James responded immediately and ALWAYS came up with a solution, while still keeping the bottom line in sight. In the end, the project ran over a few days (less than a week) and James came in under budget. Next, we'd like to remodel the master bedroom and bathroom. Cox Custom Remodel will definitely do that work.
Description of Work: We hired Cox Custom Remodel to remodel our tiny 1960's kitchen. We had never had a remodel prior to this and were apprehensive about the process. We called James (Cox) and showed him a fuzzy printout of the kitchen we wanted, and he assured us he could make it happen. He sent us a quote, which we felt was reasonable although perhaps a little high (only because we were basing our price on HGTV shows) and a time line of 6 weeks.

Cox Custom Remodeling renovated our entire 2800 square foot home in just over 6 months and we are very pleased with the results. James and his crew efficiently handled many challenges during the project without impacting the completion schedule. The project involved re-wiring and re-plumbing the home, removing walls, adding insulation for sound and energy efficiency, reconfiguring a staircase, replacing windows/skylights and doors and completely replacing the kitchen and two bathrooms. An oil fueled heating system and the associated chimney running through the center of the house were replaced by an energy efficient electric boiler system. Two wood burning fireplaces were replaced by propane inserts and the entire fireplace surrounds were removed and replaced. We lived in our home during the renovation which is a particular challenge for a contractor. James and his crew carefully thought through the process of replacing wiring, pipes and heating so that we were never without utilities at the end of the work day and our living space remained very comfortable during the entire 6 months. James, his crew and sub-contractors are professional and a pleasure to work with. Their experience shows in their workmanship.

James and his helper did an excellent job of getting the ramp installed to a usable state in one day so that my aging parents would have safe access to the house. This is the second job that I have had James do at my house because I was very impressed with the interior remodeling that he and his crew did in December of 2013. This ramp is another impressive job done by a knowledgeable contractor who strives to satisfy the customer's needs and ensure the quality of the work. The attached pictures do more than words can do to explain the excellent work that was done. The decking boards were secured in place with side entry screws in 6 places for each board. James can be a bit difficult to get a hold of initially because he is always very busy. I find that having to ping him a few times is worth the effort for the quality of work that he does. I can understand why he is in demand.
Description of Work: Installed a 4'W x 24'L access ramp with railing to replace the stairs at an entry to my house. The ramp supports were constructed using three 4" x 10" pressure treated beams supported by concrete pier blocks. The decking was cedar and the railing was Fortress iron. The work included removal of an existing planter and fence enclosure. I chose to finish the wood myself.

Purchased the contractor for a week coupon. James came out and looked at the work, we set up a time. James and his crew showed up on time and got right to work. They actually got done ahead of schedule and asked if there was more work they could help with. So we had them prep our bathroom to get re-tiled. James even gave us a name of a tile guy he knew and the tile guy came out the next two days and got our tile installed. Overall very happy with James and his crews work

After a terrible experience with a local contractor in 2013, we were hesitant to do additional work on our home for some time. After hearing about Angie's List, we contacted several contractors in our area for a quote on the work that we wanted to do. James responded promptly and delivered a quote that was within our budget and also clearly listed the necessary details for the work that would be done. After accepting the quote, James and his team started promptly on the project. They are hard working, arriving at 7:00 am each morning and only leaving the site in the late afternoon, having completed the necessary work to remain on schedule. James works with his team, ensuring that a good level of quality is being maintained at all times. The work on our gym progressed well and in a matter of weeks we have a great space to move our new workout equipment into. Having been impressed by the first project, we asked James to install a heat pump, remodel our main staircase and to install cabinets in our office. James sub-contracted the heat pump to a company that he does work with and organized the necessary upgrades to our electrical circuits. When the company found a problem with our existing furnace, they made plans to install a replacement furnace at a reduced cost. This did delay the installation of the heat pump by a few days, but James kept us updated on the progress along the way. For the office, James worked with a cabinet maker to build custom cabinets and work surfaces to achieve the look we wanted. These took a few weeks to complete before James and his crew came to install them. The quality of James' work is excellent and they spent quite some time ensuring that the cabinets fitted well into the room, which turned not to be square. In the end, they delivered a lovely office with hard wood work surfaces and bookshelves from floor to ceiling - a massive improvement over what we had previously. They also maintained the style of the room by ensuring that the existing mill work butted neatly into the newly installed cabinets. The staircase was completed at the same time and has transformed the entrance of our home. When the iron spindles did not go in an neatly as planned, James and his team stayed on the job until well after 7pm to ensure that they fitted perfectly - the extra effort and attention to detail is something that I really appreciate about James' work. Not only are James' rates reasonable for the local market, but he also keeps close tabs on where they spend their time and what materials they purchase. On several of the jobs we have received refunds when they came in under the quoted amount. For the work on the gym, this was a little over $7,000 - which is a significant amount. Here are some photos of the work that James has completed around our home: https://goo.gl/photos/ZuKYghxwfEhrhFUA6 Overall, I would recommend James and his team to anyone looking to do some home remodeling.
Description of Work: We have been using James' services over the last few month to make several improvements to our home including: remodelling our basement into a home gym; installing a heat pump for air conditioning, rebuilding our main staircase and installing cabinets in our office. James and his team have done the majority of this work themselves or managed the sub-contracting efficiently, such as in the case of the heat pump.

The work was well done, the workers were courteous and professional, the project came in on budget and on schedule. I have received so many compliments on the work that I don't even track them any more. My only regret is that its June 2015 and I'm only now posting this review. Thanks to you James and your crew.

Cox Custom Remodeling installed brand new French doors, and a large window above them, in our split level entry. The work is high quality and was done quickly (coming in well under the original quote!) We have worked with James in the past, and as always he was extremely professional, provided the quote quickly, looked for ways to save us money, and didn?t leave a single trace of dust or debris behind. He and his crew are very punctual, knowledgeable, friendly, and accommodating. Prior to the actual work, James came out to our house to provide quotes on several projects of varying scope we were considering, so that we could prioritize and decide what we wanted to tackle next. He spent plenty of time talking through the options for each project, came up with creative solutions for problems we wanted to address (namely moving a washer and drier upstairs, when there isn?t an obvious place for them ? this is our next project!), and I felt that he was very thorough. The quotes were sent quickly, and the prices seemed very reasonable. A few weeks later, my husband broke our front door so that project moved to the top of the list, and James was able to come to our house within 24 hours to take final measurements of the door and get it ordered. We are seriously so happy to have found Cox Custom Remodeling and will definitely use them in the future and recommend them to everyone we know!
Description of Work: Installed new front door and entry window.
