We examined the chimney together and noted many failed joints and the need for a new crown. Work was done, but the crown suffered some erosion due to rainfall (they did not tarp it) and the leaking into the house continued. I called them back, they returned and did a few more joints. Still leaking and they returned again with the same output. Still leaking. So, I called another company. They were not very complimentary of the previous fixes, in fact pronounced some of them as unprofessional. They then fixed the chimeny tuck pointing properly, replaced a few bricks, redid some of the flashing and charged 1/3 less than the Mad Hatter company

An individual came and looked at both fireplaces, and stated they could do some of the work, but not all of it, as they do not do any kind of work outside of the masonry. He said he would contact me with a quote the next day, but I haven't heard anything from the company. i called in to the office and left a message without a reply. Called a second time and went straight to voice mail. I would expect the first customer interaction to be much better than this has been, and all of my other contractors seem capable of meeting this expectation. The first initial contact after requesting an estimate was awesome, so someone in their front office knows her job, but the rest of the communications have been beyond poor. If this is any indication of the level of communication they exhibit throughout the entire job, I would not recommend them to anyone. In fact, I wont be using them for this job, or any other job in the future.

He came out to see why the fireplace was smoking and showed up the best way to prevent it. We initially thought there was build up in the chimney, which is why we called. He explained how to get rid of the smoke and was very respectful and pleasant. Also, when he had to cancel because of the snow storm, he made sure to call ahead. He was very punctual.

The worker arrived on time and was polite but didn't have a ladder tall enough for a two story building. He said the work order indicated four houses not a two story 4-plex. He thought maybe he could clean the chimneys from the fireplaces rather than from the top on the roof. I have never seen chimneys cleaned this way so I called my husband to load our ladder on our truck from home and bring it to the job site. The technician checked all the fireplaces while waiting but didn't wear protective covering over his shoes which I questioned. My tenants always take their shoes off at the door. Their choice-not my requirement. I respect their choice so I follow their example. He cleaned all the chimneys and then vacuumed inside the fireplaces. He wore covering over his shoes this time. All the fireplaces were free from any debris on his arrival but I imagine there was soot in the fireplaces after using the chimney sweep. I watched him vaccuum one apartment fireplace but left as the smell of soot was bothering me. He did protect the floor in front of the fireplace. I definitely recomend the company replace the vacuum cleaner. One of the apartments was vacant and had just been redone--new paint, carpets, cabinets, etc. I found a fine layer of soot on the fireplace mantel and anything nearby which I cleaned up. This was definitely not acceptable for the other tenants. Two of the chimneys did not have chimney caps. The technicain recommended we install them. We agreed so he installed one but did not have another in his truck. I would not use this company again mainly due to the lack of organization and poor equipment. The four chimney sweeps cost $319.80 and the one chimney cap cost $255.00 for a total of $629.41 which includes tax.
Description of Work: I called the Mad Hatter Chimney Sweep company from your list to have each (4) chimney cleaned in our four unit building. I described the building as having two apartments on ground level and two on the second floor each with there own outside entrance.

Mad Hatter came to my house to look at the chimneys and fireplaces in a house I just bought. The person who came to the house looked briefly at our chimneys. He told us that he would need to speak with his boss first before giving us an estimate. For weeks we never heard anything. I tried calling and still did not get a response. I emailed the company and a few days later I got a call and scheduled another appointment to get an estimate. On the day before the appointment, Mad Hatter called and left a message asking if we could change the time of the appointment so I called and left a message indicating this would be okay. However, the next day, I got a call from the Mad Hatter person stating that he was at my house. He had come at the original time in the late morning, not the late afternoon time Mad Hatter had requested when they called me the day before. I called Mad Hatter; they said that the worker would come to our home at the agreed upon late afternoon time. However, a short while later, they called and cancelled. We're done trying to work with Mad Hatter
Description of Work: The worker came out once for what I thought would be an estimate for repairs. He did not charge us for this visit but said he would call with an estimate.

I called Mad Hatter on several occasions during normal business hours, only to get their voice mail. I left voice mails requesting a call back to schedule a chimney sweep and inspection, clearly stating my call back number several times. I never received any call back or other communication from Mad Hatter. I wasted several days trying to get in touch with them and giving them the opportunity to schedule an appointment, instead of calling a chimney sweep who actually wants new customers. After waiting several days, I set up an appointment with another company. Mad Hatter clearly is not concerned with customer service, good communication or any degree of professionalism. Don't waste your time with a company that isn't even interested in acquiring new customers.

The company had given us an hour time frame for their arrival and they were well within that time frame. He called me within the time frame and let us know where he was and exactly what time he'd arrive and he was on time. He covered the fireplace area with a cloth and cleaned the stove pipe and stove with a powerful vacuum. We could see the dust and particles being sucked down into the vaccum. It turned out very clean. He was always a professional and very personable. We would use this company again.
Description of Work: The company cleaned our stove pipe and wood burning insert using a long vacuum hose. He covered the area around the fireplace with a cloth. The process only took about 15 minutes and it is very clean.

See above. I have upgraded the grade report. As I said before, the original bad grade reflected mostly the quality of the original fired employee and his work, and the fact that it isn't an "A" now reflects that it took so long to resolve the problem.
Description of Work: Mad Hatter Chimney Sweep has done a good job in the past of maintaining the wood stove and chimney. The current problem happened so long ago I don't remember when it started. Anyway a Mad Hatter employee (whom they have had to fire do to many botched jobs) put a chimney cap up and cleaned the chimney and re-installed the interior chimney pipe backwards into the wall caulking it with a toxic white putty or glue which created a noxious odor when we attempted to use the fireplace. Installing the backward pipe caused apparent damage to other parts of the chimney. It has taken maybe a year to get this finished, parts ordering etc but finally we have a well-functioning chimney pipe and other damage has been repaired. It required a number of trips. They were very polite and reassuring for all these months and haven't charged for repair parts or time since the original problem was discovered. The technician has also volunteered to come and install straps for free to better anchor the stove so it doesn't rock when loaded, which was a pre-existing condition. I don't remember what the original bad installation cost, but given that they have corrected the problem, have always been polite, and the bad employee is gone, I would ask them to clean and/or maintain my fireplace, chimney etc. in the future.

The day before the service, the scheduler called to say that the "technician wouldn't be able to make it." No further explanation. He just "wouldn't be able to make it." OK, fine. That's nice that they called. They needed to reschedule. Great! I'd love to reschedule! I'm pretty flexible this week... Ummm...this week? Their next date was THREE WEEKS OUT! Not acceptable. I am not the one who is cancelling. You are the one who is cancelling. And if you are cancelling on the customer, it is incumbent upon you to make sure that you go out of your way to find or create a convenient time. Simply bumping a customer to the back of the line, as if I'd just called today*, is not acceptable. It's called customer service. I don't know if this is related to to fact that we told them we would be using a 30% off coupon from Angie's List and they had more profitable customers (hint:don't offer it, then) or if it really is something as simple as a technician who is sick or has a family emergency or some such thing. Whatever the reason, it is not acceptable to bump a customer from tomorrow to the end of the line. I gave them a B or responsiveness for answering their phones and at least calling rather than not showing. For whatever that's worth. I will be taking my chimney business elsewhere and telling others to, as well. It's too bad because I'd heard good reports. *To be sure before I wrote this review, I called anonymously and asked for their earliest time, which was quoted as two to three weeks out.

I left a voice mail with them on a Saturday to set up an appointment. They called back on Monday, and set up an appointment for Tuesday between 2 and 4 pm. On Tuesday, I waited, and waited. 4pm rolled around and no one had come. I called to find out why no one came for the appointment. I was told they called me back on Monday 20 minutes after scheduling the appointment to tell me the appointment was not available and to reschedule. I only ever gave them one phone number, (a smart phone which has absolutely no record of any phone calls from them other than the first one.) They DID NOT call me back like the girl said she had, and lied to me about it rather than apologize for missing the appointment. There is too much competition out there for companies to be that rude and sloppy.

It went very well. Our service tech was Darrell and he was polite, knowledgable and patient. We showed up a few minutes late for our appointment as I hit traffic, and he called to let us know he had arrived and let us know he would get started with inspecting the outside until we arrived. I originally called on this company due to the good reviews on Angie's list, and to take advantage of the $99 special. When I was on the phone with the booking person she made sure I knew that the $99 was for a lined chimney and if it turned out that our new place had no liner it would be an additional $50. It was good to have this info up front so we didn't feel like it was sprung on us after they arrived. With tax it came to $164 plus change. The whole process was a good experience. After the cleaning Darrell was very careful to make sure the insert was straight and that every speck of dust was cleaned up. He wore shoe covers in the house and was polite, respectful of our furnishings and friendly to the kids when they came through. We will definitely call them again when we need more work done.

Our roof was leaking around the chimney. Mad Hatter tuckpointed the joints, installed new flashing and a new crown on our chimney. Three or four days after the work was completed, our roof began leaking several feet away from the chimney. Because it was Sunday evening and pouring down rain and I didn't think it was coming from the chimney, we called a roofing company that does emergency appointments. Apparently, the new flashing was not sealed properly and the water was leaking in through the silicone caulking. In addition, the new cap had not sat under a cover long enough and was still wet. The roofers scraped off the caulking applied by Mad Hatter and said that if the cap did not cure by the end of summer, they would come back, scrape it off, and re-apply it properly. When I mentioned this on the phone to the Mad Hatter folks, they ignored me and explained how I could pay my bill. I will never allow these people within 100 feet of my roof again.

I called about a week before hand after looking them up on Angie's List. I was called right back and scheduled an appointment for the next week. One person came, showing up a little early which was just fine. We went over the job and he went to work finishing up within an hour. He also vacuumed out the access above the insert and explained that there would be a little residual that he just could not get to. That was fine as I was having anew insert put in.

The person who came out was really nice and kept the place clean, which I appreciated. They had a special offer wherein you would get the chimney sweep work and an inspection done for around $100. However, it wasn?t really an inspection. That?s something that I didn?t like very much. Other than that, the work he did was good. He just looked at the chimney and cleaned it. He was very nice and clean. That was all very good, but there was no inspection. I think the price was good. The quality was good for one part, but the work wasn?t done for the other part. I would use their services in the future too.
