All I can say is I'll tell you I can't do it if you ask for it.
When he came to give us a bid the decision was made to hire him because we wanted the work done right away. He said that wouldn't be a problem, and that he and his crew would work through the weekend to get it done. After my wife signed his contract and paid him a substantial deposit, (we will never pay upfront again), he called to inform us that his guys were going camping for the weekend so the work would not be done as promised. During this time we also found out that he did not obtain the proper permits to do the work even though we expressed concern about this at the time of hiring. We told him that we believed he would need to get permits from our HOA. He said that he used to live in our neighborhood and new exactly how the process worked. Had he gone ahead with the work it would have cost us $500.00 a day in fines. When we tried to contact him about these issues he would not answer or return our calls until my wife told him not to come on our property again. He then called back yelling at my wife telling her he didn't want to do the job anymore and that this was his business and he didn't have time to answer his phone or return calls. After hearing all this I called him to inform him that he was fired and that I expected a full refund since no workers had ever shown up, no materials had been delivered, nothing. He then informed me that there was a 25% cancellation fee which was on the contract. This was hand written in his writing and was not clearly legible. We went through the mediation process with Service Master, the website we found him on and he agreed to refund part of our money. He failed however even to do this. Claiming he had to pay subcontractors he'd hired, (no one ever showed up to our property to work). We did get some money back but not what he told us and Service Master he would return. As far as we're concerned "The Yard Guy" stole from us.
Description of Work: The Yard Guy was hired to do some major landscaping. We fired him before he did any work.

First off let me say that there are always two sides to each story. In the event of this customer we worked together and had a contract with all work to be performed scheduled and put together for work to be completed. We do require deposits upfront for large-scale jobs which have a lot of material costs involved Or Hauling disposal fees. And in the event of this the customers were refunded the difference of what Cost spent. What the customers failed to mention is that with the work to be performed I did have four subcontractors scheduled to perform work and services that Day that we scheduled to start on. Being a business owner when you have subcontractors who have their employees and their schedules booked out for you and tell their employees That there will be a full days worth of work and then your customer cancels that job for unknown reasons Subcontractors have their own fees for canceling jobs and that's what my cancellation fee is therefore to cover those costs and my own employees as well. And yes I was being honest with the customers when my employees did Call in and caused this major mishap Over them deciding to go camping and not come into work. I can agree it's not professional but I'm not gonna make excuses like as to why we could not come and do work, or come in by myself as I was prepared and ready with my subcontractors and as for my employees go they were let go accordingly due to this problem. The huffs were very pushy and just did not have any kindness to accept my apologies for being what would have been a day late to start the project And with any job or any workplace delays no matter what the reasons are do happenand apologies are all that can be Acknowledged and hopefully understood. I speak for myself and my company when I say I am honest trustworthy and work as hard as possible to satisfy your needs as a customer communication is all that needs to be acquired by both parties I say I apologize again and thank you.

He came for one day and said it may take less than 8 hours to do the job, but I am here for a maximum of 8 hours. He only worked for about five and half hours hours. He left the brush in certain areas. His workers even came and asked what they were going to do with some of the brush. I told him that Chris didn't want to do the job. He left and never showed up. I paid him for all the work upfront, which I should not have.
Description of Work: He was supposed to clean up the brush and do some shredding.

The job was not paid for upfront let that be said. The job description was to clean up storm debris and fallen trees and limbs chip them on site and leave chips on site. I told him that it would be no more than eight hours to do the job the fact that we got it all done in five and half hours does not matter. We worked very fast and efficiently and professionally The customer did ask about a few other areas and I only told him that those areas and debris were not discussed before hand to take care of being that he had a very large acreage property and that was out of the boundaries discussed. I was paid upon completion not upfront and upon receiving payment the job in my eyes was for sure completed I was then contacted the second day being expected to come back out of pocket and do more work.
