He was very responsive to our request for a estimate and assured us he had been doing this kind of work for 30 years. After he was done the floor looked terrible. He told us it would need a third coat. There were places where the varnish was pooled up, bubbles, and dirt mixed in with the finish. Many places where scratches and scuff marks had not been removed and yet varnished over. Some places there was no varnish at all. A terrible job of molding was applied too, some not even finished to be nailed. There was dust on everything throughout the house and the HVAC vent in the kitchen was completely full and plugged off with dust where he had varnished over the wood vent with out removing it or sealing it off. Varnish had been tracked across the deck in the back, including a paint tray that had been hung to dry on the deck railing that dripped all over the deck and railing. Something (rags?) with varnish on it had been laid on the glass deck table on the deck and left to dry. We had the flooring retested after he was finished for moisture and it was still the same level of high moisture it was before he started (18%). We found that under the floor insulation had not been removed and when it was a lot of moisture under the floor. The flooring at the threshold that he finished over was rotten and had to be replaced by our second contractor. We had another contractor in to redo the floor and you can't even tell it has anything on it and half the cost to do twice as much flooring. This new contractor did a beautiful job in half the time and 25% of the cost. I let Jerry know what the issues where and he did not offer to reimburse us for any of the work he did. He told us that it might need a third coat after he was done, but a third coat was not what it needed. It had to be completely redone and a lot of clean up after he was done. He charged us $2000 and we spent $1200 to do that floor and the entrance to the house. The flooring is beautiful now. If you ever have someone refinish your floor, make sure to get recommendations to call and find out how their flooring turned out and use Angieslist to check on them too!
Description of Work: Jerry Sooter removed the finish from our kitchen hardwood flooring and then refinished it. He also was to check and remove mold and moisture in the crawlspace, check for dry rot where he could and dry out the flooring as required. He added flashing to the small balcony deck above. He was to replace the back door too, which we decided to have a door contractor do after Jerry had completed his work.

He has many good qualities that overshine any problems we have run into. Any problems we had were from the manufacturer, so I can't blame them on him. The job went over the original estimate, but he stuck to the original price.
Description of Work: He re-did a deck and re-built a chimney for me.
