I was referred to European Stone & Tile Design in Kirkland by a Designer friend of mine, and I am so glad I was. Working with Maria and her crew for some bathroom & kitchen updates was a great experience. Something I don’t often hear friends say when embarking on some remodeling. Maria met me at my home and together we walked thru my wish list where she provided expert advice on my projects and recos about what would work well, and what wouldn’t. She helped me pick the materials that fit my design ideas, and my budget along with providing inputs that were thoughtful and detailed. She offered me great suggestions for those items I was securing myself and was always willing to help answer all those additional questions you have when you’re not used to doing these types of things. Her team, including the project manager and onsite lead were also super helpful. I was really impressed with the professionalism of the prep, daily clean up and finish work. There was nothing I could find after the project that they missed or I needed follow-up on. The onsite lead was always willing to answer my questions and explain what was going on and how long it would take. They finished my project on-time and on-budget. I would use European Stone & Tile for all my future projects and recommend them to my friends.

Very well. Aaron Day was the repair person sent and he was very pleasant and, more importantly, experienced and competent. He was late because of traffic. The service wasn't cheap, but you get what you pay for (when you are lucky) and the job done was done very well. I had a serious crack in my granite counter-top near the sink and Aaron repaired it and had it looking as good as I could have hoped. Expensive, but much cheaper than replacing the granite. Good job

Demo went well; they were fast and cleaned up. Install went well. They did a great job. The Sales and Design Associate came out to inspect the job. Everyone was professional and friendly. They responded promptly to questions I had. I noticed a few small marks on the countertops which they came out quickly and fixed the problem. Overall, a good experience. I would recommend them. I booked job out about 1 month so as to get it done within 1 week. Only missed by 1 day. I noticed a leak around the garbage disposal and the plumber came out and it was a simple fix. This was the first remodel I had experienced. I decided it would be better to go thru one vendor for all that was connected to the countertops and sink install. I believe it was the correct decision.

Our kitchen and great room remodel process started over 4 months ago and is still not done. From Maria and her workers arriving hours or even days late without communication to products being told were available to us (and after pressing for weeks finding out that they never even existed), we sincerely regret choosing European over the competition. The majority of my phone calls and emails go unanswered. We paid in full months ago and we are still waiting for project completion, with no known project timeline. Our patio has been a mess of tile scraps and cardboard for weeks. Oh, and never mind the guy who showed up drunk to do the job... Our original bid came in a whopping $5k over the competition and Maria was able to "crunch some numbers" to price match. I should have gone with my gut instincts in the first place. Buyer beware.

Things didn?t start off as well as expected. When the custom ADA shallow stainless steel sink was delivered to their shop it wasn?t inspected properly and was later discovered to be damaged. This held up the whole project for several weeks while we waited for Elkay to make a new sink and ship it from the East Coast. We weren?t in a rush so waiting wasn?t a problem for us. Everything went smoothly with the measuring and template process. Eugene was polite and efficient and I felt confident that the counter would come out the right size---which it did! It was great that the same person that came to measure turned out to be the some person that installed the counter. I had several concerns about ripping out the old counter and back splash and replacing it with the new product without damaging the wall. Maria assured me that her workers were experts and there wouldn?t be a problem. Despite their experience, the wall did in fact get damaged because of the difficulty they had removing my previously installed stone counter. There were a couple of gouges that needed to be repaired and painted over. It was impressive to see Eugene and Jose carry the heavy Silestone counter into the house and put it in place. They worked very hard and were quick as well as careful. They knew what they were doing and worked well together as a team. I had a bit of a shock though when Maria suddenly showed up during the installation to tell me Eugene had called her because the new backsplash didn?t match up with the remaining backsplash. It was an issue with the way the remaining backsplash had been originally installed. I felt that Maria or Eugene should have assessed the situation better before making the template for the new counter and backsplash. Of course, the new counter had been glued in place by then so they couldn?t redo anything without damaging the wall some more. Fortunately the installer, Eugene, was able to come up with a good solution to make the transition from the new backsplash to the old backsplash look acceptable and barely noticeable. In the long run it wasn?t a problem. We didn't have to rip anything out and start over. Once the counter was installed, I discovered a few problems with the caulking. They told me that they couldn?t fix it but did send someone around to remove the extra caulk that was stuck on the surface of the counter. They did a thorough job of cleaning some areas under the counter that had gotten dirty during the manufacturing process as well. I chose to fix the gouges in the wall myself and paint over the imperfect caulking so I didn?t have to have someone coming back and forth to fix it later. We love the durability of Silestone and don?t have any regrets about choosing a light color that makes our kitchen look so fresh and bright. European Stone Works did an excellent job. I wouldn?t hesitate to recommend them to friends!
Description of Work: We are glad that we choose European Stone Works (now European Tile and Stone Design) for our counter remodel work. The overall experience was great! There were times that Maria was not available when I needed to discuss various parts of the job with her. It was frustrating to work with such a small company since there was no one else that could help me. She was overly optimistic that everything would run smoothly. Unfortunately, there were a few bumps along the way. Even so, in the end we were very satisfied and felt it was worth picking a company that had a higher bid than the other ones that we looked at because the quailty of workmanship was exceptional. We ordered a Silestone counter to a replace a Formica counter that was 28 years old and an adjacent composite stone counter that was installed at a later date. Maria was able to come up with a plan for using a single slab and making it fit the L shape that we needed. Other installers told us we would need a seam because they couldn't make it as a single unit. There were other details in workmanship that her company made a special point of including in their finishing process. Also included in the bid was the removal of our old counters. We had to hire a plumber separately to remover our old sink and install the new one. This wasn't a problem because they had a plumber to recommend who was able to fit his schedule around the installation of the counter so that we were not without a sink for more than a day or so. They cleaned up the work area and hauled away the old counter top. Eugene and Jose were hard workers and a pleasure to have around. Ron came by to follow up on several occasions to make sure the punch list was completed. He gave me a few tips about caring for the counter and assured me he would come back to take care of anything else under the warrantee.

I began working with Maria at European Stone and Tile Design around the end of March beginning of April. From the beginning I did have some warning signs. One of the first times I went to Maria?s show room to discuss granite, I waited at least 10-15 minutes as I watched her talk on her phone from a distance. When she finally came in she rolled her eyes and said ?family!? What?!! Really? She made a customer wait while she worked out a family issue?! That should have been my first clue about her customer service ethics. I almost walked out, but I blew it off and gave her the benefit of the doubt. Maria and I worked together on picking out a slab at Pental. I was told I only needed one slab to do the job. We met at my condo a couple of times the last one at which time we discussed at length the placement of the seam on the long sink-side of the kitchen. We discussed the pros and cons of different seam locations. After our discussion, we both agreed that the seam would be placed right at the sink allowing for one continuous piece of granite at either side. At no time was I EVER told that the location was only a ?potential? location and only indicated my ?preference?, and that the ultimate location would be decided by that of the templater and shop Forman at the time of installation. Neither Maria or the templater made any such statement at any time. As far as I was told this was the location for the seam. The job was originally set to go on June 4. I had scheduled my handy man, to demo the kitchen counter top, and my plumber to do their parts on the necessary days prior to and after the granite install date. On the very day, I mean hours before, my counter tops were to be removed, I got a call from Maria stating that they had some equipment failures and had to postpone my job. I had to scramble to reschedule the other workers. This was a huge inconvenience for me. Nothing was said of deducting anything from the bill which would have been a common customer service gesture. They didn?t even appear very apologetic. It was always all about European and not about the customer. The granite was then installed on Tuesday, June 19. That evening I came home and found the seam been placed in the middle of the counter directly where I do most of my work in the kitchen, not at the sink. BUT the aspect that makes it so unacceptable is that the direction or flow of the granite runs in opposite directions at the seam! My jaw hit the ground. It was so aesthetically incorrect, I couldn?t believe any company would do such a job. AND I was never told about the change in plans - never given the opportunity to prevent it. The following day I called Maria immediately and ask what was going on. She said she had e-mailed me the week prior to tell me there had to be a seam location change, and that she never heard back from me. I never received such an e-mail. Later she then admitted that the e-mail had never actually left her inbox. REGARDLESS, she needed to continue to contact me until she got an OK to proceed. Which I would not have given. She then stated that the location is always decided at the time of installation and that she always tells her customers that. This, as I stated earlier, did NOT happen. Besides, she said she e-mailed me prior so it wasn?t even at the time of installation! So many contradictions. Other things were unacceptable with this job that I need to mention. My back patio was left a mess where they cut the granite and did their work. They also gouged a small hole in one of my walls. I had to call and complain before they came back to and fix these things. They scratched my wood floor when they moved the stove oven. Then denied they did it! The granite in the kitchen does NOT measure 3 CM as I was told. It is shy and not what I had thought I was purchasing. Although, in the bathroom it was a good 3 CM! When I did questioned Maria about how this was possible, she said that my slab had broken and she had to supply a remnant from her yard to complete the bathroom. So I had to wonder, is that why none of it worked as planned? I am furious at this point. If my slab broke, she needed to purchase another one at her expense and get the job done as was contracted for. I had paid 50% up front and my remaining balance was $2034. In an effort to rectify the situation, Maria offered to reduce the bill 15% of the cost of the slab. Minimal! This would not have helped anything. It would not have fixed my kitchen or given me the funds to do so. I refused to pay the balance. I did try to settle this problem on our own, but she refused to be rational about it. About July 21st I received a Claim of Lien on my property. On July 31, I contacted Maria one more time to encourage her to settle on our own. She refused. During this conversation when I brought up the fact that my slab had broken she denied that my slab had broken or that she ever said that. My jaw hit the ground. Another blatant contradiction. Now the question: if it did not break, why did she not have enough to do the bathroom or complete the kitchen with the seams as we had planned? Around August 9 or 10, I received a Notice of Small Claim Court. It went to court on August 20th. I did not win. The fact that I lost in court does not prevent me from telling my story. The fact that I took it that far demonstrates how strongly I felt (and everyone I talked with from lawyers, to L& I, to other contractors, both in and out of the business) that European needed to take responsibility for making the job right. Although that particular judge judged in European?s behalf, I am positive that another judge, on another day, would not have. It was her word against mine about what was said and agreed upon. The judge even stated that he would not want granite like that in his kitchen, then proceed to judge in her favor! I KNOW that Maria knows she did me wrong. It sickens me as I put a lot of energy, time and consideration into the company to hire and the granite to install. This was an expensive project for me and as first time home owner, it is especially devastating for this to happen. It was simply the most frustrating, unsatisfying experience I have had with a company. I recommend you do not use European Stone and Tile Design!

Response from EUROPEAN STONE & TILE DESIGN
European Stone & Tile Design has over it's many years in business developed many steps and procedures to ensure that our custom process delivers every detail discussed and expectations of by our clients. From an initial consultation to the end result clients are informed and initials are collected along every step of the way. To note, I am deeply offended by [member name removed]'s recollection that her early arrival to our appt was responded by me insulting my family. I value being punctual and respecting my client's time and above all my family. The appt started on time as I recall noting to my Dr's office that I would call back to schedule my 5 month ultrasound. I find this important to note, because it highlights one of many inaccuracies in the above summary. Regardless, at every consult we are trained to explain how a project operates and in regards to seam locations that the ultimate decision is always that of the templater. The reason being a templater is the installer and knows how to best return for a quality installation. Therefore at time of measuring once that detail is explained, he will collect a signature from the client noting the agreement (as [member name removed] did). We worked for months with the client to resolve the issue. Her remedy was for European to replace the kitchen and start over. Per our contract when a client defaults on payment and puts in writing refusal to pay, legal action is taken. Prior to our court date, I received an email from a competitor of mine who said he had been called out to the jobsite to provide in writing that our installation was faulty. The irony is, he wound up writing a letter in my defense saying the workmanship was flawless. When in court, the judge placed no opinion on the finished product as the law does not give weight on his aesthetic opinion. We won our case because we proved in writing that the client understood that from the onset the seam (which was the subject of contention for payment refusal) was agreed to by the client. We proved this point with her signature on the template portion of her work order. There were no misunderstandings about the process as we pride ourselves in providing clear education and expectations of our procedures. Over eight years we have proven to be stone artisans with pride in our workmanship having successfully installed nearly 3000 kitchens to date- we are confident in our product and service.

Maria at European Stone and Tile was a great help to us during our kitchen remodel. This was the first time we'd taken on a project like this and she was able to walk us through the whole countertop and tile process, including helping us pick out a beautiful granite slab that we are so happy with and a tile design for the backsplash. There was a miscalculation on the granite backsplash behind the stove because the pattern maker didn't realize we were putting in a slide in stove, but European Stone reduced the price of the tile installation to correct the problem. Overall, we had a good experience and really appreciate the care Maria and her team took with this job.

After reading the reviews, I eagerly contacted Maria and was initially impressed with her friendly and professional demeanor over the phone. Unfortunately, ESW has totally dropped the ball and has been unable to provide an estimate for the various projects we're interested in kicking off. What's most frustrating is the fact that I spent significant time to provide ESW with measurements, descriptions and even dropped by their showroom to provide color samples to try and facilitate the entire process. While Maria was very pleasant over the phone, there's been a complete lack of follow-through and I'm irritated that I wasted so much time to try and give them my business. I know we all have busy schedules, but c'mon. I'll be continuing my search elsewhere to find a company that is eager and available to assist me with my projects.
Description of Work: No work was done--although I had several phone calls, emails and even visited the showroom once, the company was unable to provide any estimates whatsoever. It's annoying since I invested a good amount of time to provide them with measurements, color samples and detailed descriptions of what I'm looking for. Overall, our anticipated budget spend would have been around $6-10K...not a trivial amount in my opinion.

Granite was chosen from slab at vendor. No flaws were acknowledged or pointed out prior to installation. Vendor pushed for immediate payment upon install completion. Due to heavily patterned granite, the flaw was not noticed for more than a week. Flaw is more than 1/4" in diameter, front & center and 2" from front edge. Multiple contacts were made with vendor but their response of righteous indignation that the flaw is due to manufacturing issues and not their problem flies in the face of logic since we contracted with them and believed their assurance of a professional and flawless counter. They only advised correcting and refilling of defect would cause enormous mess but have not acknowledged replacement may be the only correct action. Contrary to their pre-install claims, they do not stand behind their promises of quality workmanship.

Response from EUROPEAN STONE & TILE DESIGN
The review posted above is a rare situation that had a disappointing outcome for both parties and wanted to note that contrary to the member’s posting, ESW does stand behind all of our Craftsmanship, which entails: fabrication & Installation. European Stone Works is very disappointed in the outcome, since despite our best efforts the customer is still not happy with their counter top. Despite this review, we would like to assure a considering candidate that ESW has a very long history and list of very satisfied customers who frequently provide rave reviews. As quick overview for one who is considering natural stone, for all fabricators who purchase granite from a supplier the slabs are all provided to our industry in a “as is” condition. Meaning, when a granite quarry mines stone out of the earth and cuts the slabs into it’s final dimension they grind and polish the faces of the slabs leaving all the edges exposed and raw. The face of all stones are shipped to us fabricators in a finished condition and “fixing” the face of stone is rare option. Refacing a counter top is available to just a handful of colors, colors that include no movement and a very dark solid background. Other stones that are full of movement are what we call “exotics” because of their exotic nature/coloring and fabrication difficulty level. The remnant color that the members had chosen from our bone yard is called Golden Persa, which is a granite that is crystal based. This means that the stone when quarried it has a lot of pits (holes) in the face where crystals blew out during the splicing process. The factory addresses this issue by filling the face of stone slabs with layers of different colored epoxy’s (commercial grade glue). Factories will use clear as an overall coat but specific colors when the clear coat doesn’t take to all pits. In the member's situation, there was a very small area about half the size of a fingernail which the factory filled with a colored glue that in better lighting didn’t appear to be a very attractive match. Unfortunately, while the member and ESW were selecting the material no one saw that tiny flaw; because the material, Golden Persa, is a very unique stone with a great deal of movement. The busy nature of the stone prevented anyone from catching a fill that is less than an 1/8” in diameter. When ESW manufactures a custom counter top, we work on the raw edges and fabricate custom profiles, sink cut outs etc.- NOT THE FACE. Especially with a color like Golden Persa, we would never touch the face, because of the additional trouble digging out such a small fill would cause. We could cause more crystals that are being held together by epoxy to blow out or send a shiver through stone causing a crack, especially after the product has been installed. Moreover, the mess it would cause would be great inside of a home. In order to recreate any high polish gallons of water are needed to do so to add sheen to the stone surface and keep the polishing machines cool. This is not a process that can be done in a home. Moreover, removing the existing top is also not an option, because it is glued down to a plywood sub top using 100% proof silicone. The stone’s flaw was so minor that two months past before the customer noticed the issue and brought it to our attention. Lastly, ESW’s payment structure is outlined in our contract stating that we are to receive payment upon completion of the project; only after a walk through with a satisfied customer. Never do we demand payment, but reminders are sent by the accounting department about payments due.

It turned out better than I expected. Maria, who keeps the office going, is very good at keeping in constant contact via phone and email with the customer and takes the guess work out of the project. Eugene and his team are very good at the fabricating and installation. I had been trying for over a year to find a reliable fabricator who would work with me and return phone calls. After several bad experiences (one with another Angie's List member) I was very glad to come across European Stone Works and am looking forward to working with Maria and Eugene again in the near future.

It was smooth from start to finish. They showed us all of their remnant pieces and knew every single one of them by name. By using remnant pieces you can save yourself a lot of money! They were able to come out within a week and make the template and come a week later to install. The installer and the female employee who helped us pick out the granite had amazing personalities. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I can't wait to buy more granite from them.

The overall experience with this company was just satisfactory. They finished the work but with lots of issues. The project was supposed to done in a week. It took two and half week to complete the project. The delay was partly because of European Stone Works and partly because of the electrician sub-contracted by them to do the work. Not a professional installation. Left gaps between cabinets and granite. 4. Messed up measurements of counter tops and had to redo a big slab. 5. Granite was not cut properly and they had to do several modifications to the granite slabs creating more mess. 6. Costly for the quality of the work done.
Description of Work: The work involved making closet for fridge, removing a dry wall, rewiring electrical circuits, removing existing counter top, and installing new granite counter top. The electrical work and dry wall work was subcontracted. The granite counter top installation was done by this company.

Response from EUROPEAN STONE & TILE DESIGN
WHEN ESW TOOK ON THIS PROJECT THREE YEARS AGO, THE CUSTOMER MADE IT CLEAR THAT HE WAS NOT INTERESTED IN PAYING EACH SUBCONTRACTOR SEPARATELY AND WANTED TO PAY EVERYTHING THROUGH ESW. WE AGREED WITH THE UNDERSTANDING HE PICK HIS OWN SUBCONTRACTORS FOR THE DRYWALL AND ELECTRICAL WORK. HE HAD THREE ESTIMATES FOR ELECTRICAL AND THREE ESTIMATES FOR DRYWALL; AND THE MEMBER SELECTED EACH INDIVIDUAL HE WANTED TO WORK WITH. WE ADVISED THAT BY USING HIS OLD CABINETS HE WOULD RUN INTO LEVELING ISSUES, YET HE SAID NEW GRANITE WAS ALL HE WANTED AND WASN'T INTERESTED IN THE PURCHASE OF NEW CABINETS. WE STATED FROM THE BEGINNING THAT WE WERE NOT GENERAL CONTRACTORS BUT AS A COURTESY COULD HANDLE ALL THE PAYMENTS. WE DID TEMPLATE THE OVERHANG BY 1/2" OFF, SO WE QUICKLY REDID THE COUNTER AND WERE BACK OUT WITHIN ONE DAY. WE ARE SORRY HE WASN'T SASTIFIED 100%, HOWEVER, WE DID AN EXCELLENT JOB WITH THE COUNTERTOPS. REFERENCING OUR CONTRACT, HE UNDERSTOOD THAT ESW WAS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OVERSIGHT OF THE OTHER CONTRACTORS. AS A QUICK NOTE, WE CARRIED THE GRANITE UP THE 8TH FLOOR OF HIS CONDO, WHICH WAS QUITE A CHALLENGE.
