Black Lion Heating & Air Conditioning

A chilly Saturday afternoon, about 3:30pm, my furnace quit working. I called to a friend who recommended I talk to Ben at Black Lion. Ben returned my call within twenty minutes and had the furnace working again within an hour of my call. In the process of repairing the furnace Ben pointed out other repairs I might consider; he mentioned the parts that are under warranty - helpful to know. He helped me understand the options for repair and replacement, including information about the high efficiency/environmentally friendly systems I'm interested in. He explained the cost vs benefit of the choices in a way that was easy to understand. I feel he treated me fairly and didn't take advantage of my situation. One of the good guys.

Great, great service provider. Brad was even early for my 8am appointment, which I so appreciated because usually people show up late & as a consequence, make me late to work. He was thorough & professional and explained the issues with my aging furnace clearly. I would call them again for sure & will definitely get a quote when my furnace does need to be replaced.

We purchased Angies Big Deal ($69 for furnace tune up) and received an appointment within a few days. Our gas furnace seemed to be working all-right, but we had recently moved into the house and wanted to make sure it was functioning properly and was safe. Ben arrived early, after calling to make sure that was OK. He carefully examined every part of the furnace and also showed us how to care for the filters. He was very careful, thorough, and knowledgeable, paying particular attention to some rust which turned out to be the result of a leak that had been previously repaired. He said the furnace was in good working order and did not require any work or repairs at this time. We were very pleased and would not hesitate to call this company again.

I called them many times and never got a response.

We made the decision to replace our 20 year old Payne gas furnace to upgrade to a newer, more efficient model. We were set to go with either a Trane or a Rheem system and asked for quotes from companies that dealt with them and had excellent reviews. We decided to ask for a quote from BlackLion because of the special offer they had on a Coleman system in addition to the excellent reviews they have here in Angie's list. All of the companies that came over were all impressive, as I expected them to be. When Ben came over the first question I threw at him is why are your prices less than your competitors. I had been previously told by one of the other companies that some installers offer a lower price because they use a Coleman system implying they are not as good although no specific installer was mentioned. Ben explained to me that they have a lean operation and thus have lower overhead so they dont have to charge as much. Him and his partner Jason are out in the field working so this is why their costs are lower. He assured me they make a good enough profit to where its a win/win for them and their customers. The next question I threw at him is how good are they in installing furnaces. His answer was good enough to keep us in business as his livelihood depends on it. They dont have an advertising budget and rely a lot on word of mouth referal. He pointed to the years of experience that he and his partner had installing furnaces. I took these information into context of my particular install which based on my research and consultation with an engineer friend, installation of an 80% furnace on a pre-existing system is not rocket science. Finally I asked him why should I select a Coleman over a Trane or Rheem system. He then explained to me how the Coleman fully modulating system was an excellent system in terms of comfort and economy. That is when I think he sensed that I had a strong preference for the Trane system. That is when Ben told me that hey, if you want the Trane we will put that in for you for the same price as the Coleman, no problem. Then I asked him what Trane model are you talking about? He told me since their offer is for the Coleman modulating furnace, then it will be Trane's equivalent model the XV-80. That is what really grabbed my attention considering I have read and been told that Coleman was a less expensive model but here was Blacklion offering the Trane for the same price. To keep the price in perspective, the other quotes I received for the Trane XV-80 was for $3,800. So after analysing the pros and cons, we decided to go with Blacklion and went for the Trane XV-80 instead of the Coleman modulating furnace. Told Ben Friday we had deal and we had the appointment set up for the install the following Monday at 1 PM. On the day of the install, Ben called me at noon and informed me that they were having difficulties with an ongoing install and they were going to be delayed. I am thnking it had to be the prior review talking about the difficulties of the install. In any case, receiving the notification made up for the delay. Ben and Brian came over around 5 PM and started work on the install. At some point in time, Jason came over to. Throughout the install, I had every question answered and they worked professionally. They had everything completed and tested around 9:30 PM. So, the brand new Trane XV-80 is humming along and warming the house just fine and Blacklion did everything they said they would do. I am obviously very satisfied with the whole transaction. I will say that the best reason why I went with them is they earned my trust the most!

Despite unforeseen difficulties during the installation, Black Lion's installers did a GREAT job, answered all of our questions and made certain we are completely satisfied. They refused additional compensation for what turned out to be an unduly difficult job. We are greatly impressed by the work ethic of Black Lion's representatives and would recommend them and their company without reservation. We will be using Black Lion again (when some other work is being done simultaneously) and will be telling others of the service we received. BLACK LION IS VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

After purchasing the cupon, I called Black Lion, it was in the afternoon when I called, they returned my call the next day, and an appointment was set up for the next week. Their employee was prompt and friendly. During the inspection he found there was a water leak, which had not been noticed or interferred with operation of the furnace. He advised I needed to contact the company that I purchased the furnace from, since our furnace is only 4 years old, he did not want to invalidate the warranty. He took the time to show us the leak so we could explain it to the dealer. The leak was in the part of the furnace I would have never looked even if I had replaced the filter myself. He finished his maintance and also suggested it might be a good idea to get the ducts cleaned. Thank you Black Lion and thank you Ben Ward. You saved me from more damage to my furnace. From now on I'm going to get the maintance done annually.

We found Black Lion Heating and Air Conditioning thru an Angie's List "Big Deal". The price was better than any of the quotes we had previously received. Our first contact was thru e-mail. We had questions about what the special included. Ben responded very quickly and thru e-mail and phone conversation he answered all our questions and we purchased the Angie's List Deal. We had been without hot water for a week and told him we were very anxious to get the instalation done. We had hot water later that day! They explained what they were going to do and why, did a great job and cleaned up before leaving. There were no surprise added costs. That had been a huge concern for us. It was a very positive experience. We would definitely use them again and also recommend them to our friends.

Black Lion did a great job of servicing our heating system, which hadn't been serviced in 5 years. They arrived right on time, and went straight to work. Our system needed a small part that was ordered and installed within a few days. I also wanted a high grade filter, which they brought back on the second visit. The serviceman was experienced and professional. The price was very competitive, especially since they made two visits to complete the work.

I learned the burners have not been able to be removed for cleaning since the master bedroom walk in closet was installed. When he removed the plate to attempt to remove the burners, he discovered a large crack in the face of the fire box. I did need to ask him what all of that meant exactly; I.e. did it pose a fire risk. His response was yes and that he would not use it. He then shut the furnace down recomending a new one. He promised to e-mail a report so I could give it to the home's co-owner.

Ben called to make my appointment, arrived on time (early after calling to make sure I was home) and was friendly and informative on how my gas furnace was working. He willing crawled under the house to perform the furnace tune-up. Glad to have a good furnace person now to help me take care of my house. I will certainly be calling Black Lion Heating again!

The individual from Black Lion performed annual maintenance on my furnace - he was very helpful in answering my questions - let me know our filter did not need to be replaced yet (rather than automatically replacing and charging me for a new one). I mentioned that we were having our hard wood floors refinished and provided me information to keep my furnace in good shape during this process. I was very impressed with Black Lion and will use them again.

I was skeptical going in to this cut-rate furnace tune-up deal. I expected I may be paying good money to be told how much I needed to spend on my furnace (which was working fine, but had not been serviced in several years). The service technician was the nicest guy. Very personable, and knowledgeable about my furnace. He went about taking apart and cleaning the parts. Then, uh oh, you have a cracked heat exchanger, and it's not worth fixing this kind and age of furnace. He wrote me up an estimate for a new furnace, installed. He told me scare stories about dying in the night of carbon monoxide. He told me about new standards that will make it much more expensive to replace a furnace in the near future. I told him I'd give him a call, then did some research. First, the heat exchanger and a bunch of other essential parts CAN be replaced on this furnace for about 1/3 of the cost he gave me for a new furnace. Second, there's a positive pressure situation in the furnace such that when there is a crack in the heat exchanger, clean air leaks into the fire box, NOT carbon monoxide leaking into the clean air. And if there's a really huge failure in the heat exchanger, the furnace is likely to shut down - not kill you in your sleep. Third, the particular type of furnace I was offered is seen as low end, and likely to need MORE service sooner rather than later. Lastly, after I told him I'd call, he called back repeatedly and left messages on our phone. Clearly he was anxious to close the deal. His messages were very personable and friendly, but unconvincing.

Bought an Angie's list coupon for a furnace inspection. Called and left a message. Got a return call that evening and was able to schedule an inspection for the following week (despite it being peak furnace inspection season). Was given a definite time (not a window of time). Ben showed up a bit early which was fine. He seemed thorough, efficient and professional.

Very professional technician. Was punctual and extremely polite. Tuned up both of our furnaces and cleaned up after himself. He even took a look at our gas fireplace which wasn't working properly and gave advice on what to do to fix it. Though it wasn't his area of expertise he gave some good tips. Their business is in Everett but I live in Burien so they cover a big area. I will definitely call this company again as I was very pleased with the job they did. Just in time for the crumby weather too!

Because our family room and playroom are an addition, there was no heating vents from our furnace to the rooms. Unfortunately, the way the addition was put on they weren't able to run ducts under the house through the crawl space but Ben came up with the great idea of putting in exposed ductwork which goes great with our eclectic style and we love it! Ben and Jason were on time, fast, professional and extremely neat. I highly recommend Black Lion!

They were very nice to speak with. Even though they are not going to perform the service from the Angie's List Big Deal that I purchased, they are going to give me an estimate on another service.

The furnace needed replacing so I was given a quote. I checked that out online and it seemed reasonable. I called and approved the replacement and they came out the next day and replaced it. I am happy with both the service and the new furnace. The only thing I was disappointed with was that a different person came out to conduct the replacement work instead of the person I already knew.

Jason scheduled us promptly, then on the day of work showed up about 15 minutes late, which was fine. It turns out there's not much tuning up to do on a system like this, so he basically did nothing, as far as I can tell. He didn't clean the fan motor or the coils, and in fact destroyed a little bit of the insulation around the interior from exhuberant soldering (which wasn't replaced). Perhaps this was my fault for scheduling unnecessary work. However, Jason did find a small leak in the pipe connected to the water pump inside the furnace. I had never noticed it before. He spent over an hour trying to fix it to no avail. He called in another HVAC company with more experience and proper tools, which we had to pay standard rates for. It took them 3 visits to finally fix it, by removing the pump and pipe and completely resoldering the joint. I'm happy with the other company's persistence to make it right, and I'm happy with Jason's attempt to fix it as part of the tune-up visit. I'm unhappy with the lack of "tuning up" done, and with the extra service charge and total of 4 visits by technicians required.
