Black Lion Heating & Air Conditioning

I got bids from three companies to replace my furnace when the company that usually does my fall service told me the furnace was no longer usable. i called Black Lion based on Angie's List reviews, even though I was a little hesitant because thhe company is fairly new compared to better known companies. Black Lion's s representative, Brian, was punctual, polite, and very informative. The bid from Black Lion was also my lowest bid, $2000 less than the company I have had servicing my furnace for over 10 years. The installers came on time, and did a careful job, explaining my new high-tech wifi thermostat and cleaning up after themselves. Then the installation supervisor, Jason, came by and checked their work. I have signed up for their yearly maintenance service, which is also less than the cost of my previous provider. Although the weather has not required much use of the furnace yet, it has been working well when it turns on. I am very happy that I chose Black Lion for my new furnace work, and look forward to a good maintenance relationship as well.

We choose Ben from Black Lion heating after reviewing 4 other quotes. He presented himself as informed and professional and since Angie's List gave his company good ratings we felt somewhat reassured. Unfortunately the work began 3 weeks behind schedule. Ben did not schedule his team properly, one person showed up for a week when were told there would be a team. Ben told us the work would take 3-5 days, which was a huge understatement. From the first week there were some large holes left that had to be later repaired by a contractor we hired. Week 2, more help came but did not complete the installation until the end of Week 3. During this time an electrician subcontracted by Black Lion came unannounced and wanted us to pay him directly. He explained he no longer worked with Black Lion and needed to be paid for work he had done. To Ben's credit he did make sure the electrician did not return for payment. At the end of Week 3 our furnace was working but the sound was tremendous, like a jet engine. The co-owner came out and made fixes at Week 5. We paid for an AC unit but it was not ordered on time. Complete installation of the AC unit was one month later. List of problems: Did not submit rebate invoice to PSE on time as promised (loss of thousands to us) Final paid invoice received well past 30 day period to get rebate Did not begin job on time Job lasted much longer then quoted Left holes outside house and in house Did not install AC in timely manner Left mess up in attic Had to hire a contractor per their request, to fix holes left in ceiling from an intake not placed correctly and other holes around house. (They did pay for the contractor for the fixes) Pros: Units work well (furnace and AC) Employees kind and respectful Co-owner came out to fix problems after Ben did not reply to countless messages My family is challenged enough, as my husband is recovering from a traumatic brain injury. Ben knew of our situation and we are saddened that we had no choice but to write this review. We will not recommend their service. I can only hope they improve their management for the future. ______________________________ Update in response to Black Lion: It is unfortunate that you replied to a review instead of contacting us. We have left you countless opportunities to reach us. Your lack of contact gave us no other recourse. 1. Our biggest issue was the rebate after all the other fiascos. Ben specifically told us that your company takes care of the rebate. One less thing we would not have to worry about. Ben told us that your company has a direct contact person at PSE. If there was a problem at anytime with submitting said paperwork I would have been more then capable of sending it in. I never held payment back to not get rebate. I paid 1st half at beginning of job then 2nd half when job was complete. That is the norm to wait till the job is complete. I did not know it was going to take 2 months. If you recall I contacted your office for a paid invoice, all documented by texts & emails. 2. No personal belongings were in the attic where you did 98% of work. You never told us there was a problem with the storage area before getting to the attic. I asked techs and they always told me they had plenty of space and is was much better than what they were used too. 3. Your company relocated equipment in a different location, over our living room, then what Ben had originally discussed with us, over the kitchen. We were concerned and brought it to you, as we had jet engine sounds above the living room. You had to rework venting to get it quieter. If you remember you recommended we move the furnace over the living room, that is not what we wanted. We never made any changes it was always a straight install of Heating & AC 4. There was no help from your company with the plumbing leak as the person never showed up or called us back. Ben was kind enough to come out to take a look that night. He recommended someone but that was it. It impressed us at the time but that was not enough to make up for all the other mishaps. Yes, we did not know anyone yet to help us with the leak as we just had moved to the area. I resolved it with a call to our insurance company and they had someone out that night. 5. Woodinville inspector did come out and had gas lines secured under crawl space to code. No emergency tech, it was your regular tech he actually fixed a mistake of the first tech that started the job. Yes, it is true that Home Depot techs were uncomfortable installing the gas dryer to the gas line as it was set up. It was important to call your company for follow up because we did not know what they were talking about. I had lost faith in your company by then and asked an inspector to check the whole thing out. 6. We never asked the electrician to do any extra work for us. He did that all on his own. An extra outlet in the kitchen is what he put in. We had no problem paying him but that is not what happened. Your company broke ties with him and he showed up seeking payment and you told us not to worry about it. It was odd having 2 men show up at my home speaking poorly of their ties with your company. It made me very uncomfortable so I asked for an invoice and told him we would send payment after I spoke with your office. I have plenty on my hands caring for my husband. Your company knew of my circumstances, our daily trips to UW for Neuro rehab. You knew my focus was on helping my husband recover from a massive TBI. I left you and your techs in my home for countless hours hoping you would complete the work to help make our home more comfortable to aid him in his recovery. I feel you have taken advantage of our situation and in the end did not help me outside of the unit functioning properly. From your own reviews on yelp it shows that your company submits rebates for your customers, (well almost). All it takes is a little ownership when you have made a mistake, that is called having integrity. You know how to make this right, you can still contact us directly.

The guys came right on time, were super friendly and did a wonderful job. There is no floor drain in our basement so they had to haul the old unit up the stairs full of water, but they did that without the hint of complaint. I even offered a little bonus to them afterwards, and they both refused, saying that's what we're paid to do!!! Way to go Trevor and Jack! This was one of the best interactions I've had. Bought the advertised deal for $949. After some questions to see if there were any hidden costs for expansion tanks, disposal of old tank, permits, earthquake straps, etc (No hidden costs) I scheduled a Friday 8-9 AM appt. I was worried that it would take too long since I had to be out the door for kids dental appt at 1 pm. The service person came out at 8:50 and promptly got to work. He was done in under 2 hrs. New expansion tank, flexible gas line, two nice earthquake straps, instructions on the pilot light. Very efficient. The only thing he didn't do was tell us to run the water for 45 minutes. The water came out brownish with alot of black sediment clogging the aerators on the bathroom sinks. I ran the water for about 45 minutes at the two bathtubs (no aerator) and had to remove the aerators on 4 sinks to rinse out the sediment. The source of the sediment was probably gunk that had settled in the 21 year old pipes that had been stirred back up during the draining of the pipe and fitment of the new connection. The 50 gallon tank only had a 6 yr warranty. The $949 + tax was as cheap as I could find on Angie's list. Still kinda expensive since the tank is only valued at about half that amount BUT... it's a business, they have fixed costs like payroll, trucks maintenance, insurance, etc. and the need to make some profit. Worthwhile since I didn't want to mess with natural gas. I would use them again.

From the first call, the follow up, and the installation, all went very well. When the original 50 Gal Tank wasn't going to fit, Jason (installer) resolved the issue quickly, and got the new water heater in place. The installation team (Jason and Jack) were friendly and professional, and explained steps, and answered questions afterwords. This was overall a great service.

They did good work. It was not any major work. They did what they were expected to do. I have no complaints.

Prompt and efficient are the two terms that describe the service Black Lion provided. We scheduled to have an estimate and Brian was at the door at the appointed time. Brian provided our options after a quick survey, gave a written estimate and followed up with official estimate in e-mail the following day. The day of installation went the same, the two installers arrived on time and completed the installation in less than the estimated time to complete the job. Jason and his assistant were pleasant and courteous. After the installation, Jason took the time to explain in detail how to work the new thermostat and answered all of our questions.

One of two water heater tank leaked all over the floor. Within 2 hours of me calling Black Lion, they sent someone out to help me get this massive nightmare under control. I scheduled to have them install two new tanks two days later. On the day of install, they were punctual, respectful of my house and property and three yapping dogs. They went at it non-stop for the duration of the day, approximately 6-7 hours. By the time they were finished, I went down stairs to check on everything and they were busy cleaning up the area. During the explanation of the work that was completed, one of the guys told me that the initial piping could have been done better, so they just went ahead and did it at no additional charge. They also installed a new pump for my A/C at no charge (they came out earlier in the summer to check out why my A/C was pooling water). It seemed like they just enjoy what they do and they have fun doing it as I heard lots of laughter during the day from their work area. The installation alone was done well and area left neat and tidy (if I had to give any critique, it would be that the smoke detector wasn't put back at the end. I asked them to take the thing off of the ceiling because it was going off during some copper pipe soldering). These guys went above and beyond with the install by doing more than needed because it was "the right thing to do." I'm thoroughly impressed and happy to have found a trustworthy a company that is local and one that I can call on in the future.

The person answering the phone was courteous and helpful. It was easy to book an appointment. They arrived promptly when they said they would. Fast, efficient and great work. We will definitely be using them in the future for all of our HVAC needs.

I purchased a hot water replacement on Angie's List when our water heater broke and started leaking. With guests in town for my son's wedding, hot water was a critical need! I didn't receive a MESSAGE from them by Monday morning - so I cancelled my purchase and called another family owned company who came out to my house on Labor Day and had a new tank installed within 3 hours. I know it was Labor Day weekend - but I feel that companies that supply critical infrastructure items in homes - like heaters and hot water tanks - need to monitor their Angie's List orders and at least e-mail or set up service - giving clients at least an option to pay extra for service on a holiday. They did call me the morning of Sept. 2nd and were very nice and professional.

The plumbers were on time, they worked cleanly & picked-up after themselves. The initial phone contact went smoothly. confirming phone call as the service date approached was problematic.

Excellent overall. Knowledgeable initial estimate, efficient workers. Only thing is that I had to call them to make appointments for mechanical and electrical permits through the state. They should have been proactive about it.

We asked for 3 quotes before going with Black Lion, their quote was the most competitive one. Normally I am a bit cautious about the lowest price but in this case there were a lot of recommendations for Black Lion and the interaction with the sales rep didn't feel like an unprofessional company's interaction so we decided to go with them to get a new AC and furnace. They were prompt on the installation day and explained the process, what they were installing. They did a good job at routing the AC pipes to minimize the impact on usable space on the garage (shelves etc) and overall installation looked very clean. Their installers were friendly and professional, and their office promptly scheduled the inspections on the dates I needed. There was a minor issue after installation which they promptly fixed. If you are getting an AC unit in an HOA area, note that Black Lion will not make the HOA request for your but their sales rep will help you fill the form regarding any details of the AC unit, placement etc.

They did a good job. They were on time and cleaned up. They were very responsive. The price was good.

That turned out great. One technician came out and he did the tune up for the furnace and AC. Their professionalism was good as well as their punctuality.

It went well. We had a hard time setting it up initally in January but once we got a hold of them in May it was fine.

It didn’t turn out. The guy came out and he said that it’d be worthwhile to take care of the tune up after our renovation had finished. He did clean out the filter and was open and honest. It was a pleasant experience all around. He was at the home for about 30-40 minutes.

The sales associated who came out was punctual, professional, and very knowledgeable. He did a quick inspection and made recommendation, and within an hour of leaving we had a digital proposal. We were super impressed because their bid was $1k lower than the other bids we had obtained. Their work men were very polite, punctual and professional. They worked with as much minimal disruption as they could manage, were fast in the installation, and their work was excellent. The one challenge we had is they completely forgot to schedule a city inspector to come out and review their work - that could have been a problem. Ultimately, we are very satisfied with our new system and wish that all vendors we hired could be as high quality as they were.

I was impressed with Black Lion from day 1. The salesman, Kevin was prompt, professional, answered all of our questions and seemed to genuinely like working for Black Lion. The install guys were also prompt and professional. The job took 2 days and I'm pretty sure the left our basement cleaner than when they arrived. I would HIGHLY recommend Black Lion. I think they charged a fair price and provided spectacular service (which in my book is most times more important than price).

The actual service was great. The plumbers were professional and worked cleanly. Getting a confirming call back was a bit more problematic. I made the appointment about 3 weeks in advance and called to confirm 2 days before. I left 2 messages and didn't get a call back. On the day of the scheduled service, I called again to find out what time the plumbers were coming and as I was on the phone, they were knocking at the door. So, in the end, everything went well, it just would have been nice to get the call back so I would know what in the morning meant.

We recently contacted Black Lion to perform the services noted above. Our experience with them was such a refreshing change in contrast to our former service provider; they provided us an exceptional service experience, while also being considerably less expensive than our previous provider. They were exceptionally quick to respond to our initial inquiry and were able to get us on their books the next week. On the day of service, they were able to arrive a little ahead of schedule (when does that ever happen?), and they set right to task on the furnace maintenance. While that was being done, Ben worked with me to get an estimate together on AC install. I actually wasn't sure it would even be feasible given our small lot, but we were able to locate a spot where the unit could be placed and work. He explained the two options we had, pros and cons of each and answered all my questions (and I had quite a few). He was extremely knowledgeable and helpful and wasn't looking to do the "hard sell", which I really appreciated. We got the quote we needed (which seemed very reasonable) and we are actively evaluating our decision. Its really just a matter of financial investment vs. planned term of stay in home. Additionally, they evaluated our gas fireplace for us as it would not ignite. They were able to clean it and get it working again in no time. While we don't need it right now, it will be great to have it in working condition again come fall. Overall, these guys were great. Timely, professional, knowledgeable, and just really nice folks to work with. I would highly recommend their services, and we will definitely be having them back again! ** UPDATE ** We've since had Black Lion back out to install the AC they quoted on the previous service ($~5,500). Again, these guys were terrific. New team of people this trip - all incredibly nice folks - very professional and personable. High quality work all around. They were here a good portion of the day completing the install and worked non-stop from arrival to departure. The install involved placing the compressor on the opposite side of the house from the garage/furnace and therefore everything had to be run through the crawl space out into the garage. While I understand this is actually fairly common, it was a ton of work regardless. The original install of our furnace when the home was built had the furnace rather slapped into place and hooked up. The re-installation they did for the furnace is super clean and tight! Electrical inspection was completed yesterday and the inspector said it was really excellent work - top-notch and perfect. We are loving the AC and will definitely be sticking with Black Lion for our Heating & AC services moving forward.
