I had called Black Lion two weeks earlier for an appointment. Their ratings in Angie's list were very good so I decided I would go ahead and accept the delay in getting service as the weather was still warm and the heating still worked. The technician arrived right on time on the appointed day and set to work. In a few minutes he called me over to look at the heat exchangers and showed me corrosion in them. He told me that if there was corrosion that it was probably from moisture getting in the system from cracks and so also it was likely that carbon monoxide was seeping out into the heated air. No other test were performed. He said he would provide an estimate for installing a new furnace and contact me later with that information, but that was never done. He completed putting the furnace back together collected his money and left. A few mornings later we set the heat on but now no heated air came out, just room temperature air. I then contacted another heating company.

Provider arrived on time and completed the work very quickly. All my questions were answered. While other companies I contacted told me that there would be an extra charge to move my clothes dryer out of the way, this company did not charge me to move my dryer and they did it with good humor. I would contact this company in the future if I needed heating/air services.

I wish I would have written down the name of the person who came out to perform the service. He was very professional and showed me how to maintain my air conditioning unit between servicing. Though the coupon was a choice for either air conditioning unit or furnace, he also looked at the filter in my furnace. I'd just changed it not long ago, so he left a new filter to use next time I need to change it. I'll continue to give Black Lion Heating & Air Conditioning my business even without a coupon in the future. I felt confident with the information I was given and didn't feel pressured for an upsell.

The work that they did was good quality work and the price was okay. I don't know whether the price was too high or too low. I did have a complaint. There were two instances that they failed to return my calls several times after the work was done. It was regarding questions I had. They never called back and this was on multiple occasions. They didn't follow up by returning my phone calls. They did work for me. They did a fine job. I paid them all for it. When I called them to ask questions because I had a problem, they did not return my calls. I don't know if I would use them again because of that despite their good work. They communicated fine whenever I need the arrangements but after the work was done, they did not communicate to me. They should communicate for them to get an A. I would probably give them an F in communication. When we contacted them originally, they were responsive. They were fine when we arranged to get the work done. They were on time. The work was good but I demand communication.
Description of Work: I purchased a big deal for Black Lion Heating & Air Conditioning. They replaced a motor. They did a furnace tune-up. We were aware that the air conditioner motor had a problem and so they came back a few days later to replace it.

I think a hundred dollars to do what he did was way a lot. He might have inspected something. Did he do anything? I don't think so. He changed the filter but I can do that for free. He was pretty responsive. I would have suggested that he'd give me a telephone call while he was on his way just to check out I was here. They liked to schedule those things online. They could have reminded me in some way that they were coming either by text or phone call. He was right here at 8:00.

I have nothing against the actual installation work. The work was done well on the scheduled day. The crew reached in time, I showed them all the access points, they kept working till late afternoon and were done around 6:30 PM. Almost 8-9 hours of work in total. The crew was friendly and professional. I am forced to write a bad review for the customer service of Black Lion. After the installation, there is a mandatory electrical inspection to be done by a WA State dept. inspector. I scheduled the inspection through Black Lion Customer Service, for a Friday. I requested for a morning window between 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM. Black Lion Service Rep. confirmed that I am on for a Friday inspection. So, I stayed home in the morning, waiting for the inspectors. Nobody turned up and I got an email from Black Lion a bit after 12:00 PM that they got call from inspectors that they are on the way. When I called to follow up at 2:00 PM, they were vague and non-committal. They said they have no control on outside agency. I called up the concerned state dept. and they said they don't have me on the schedule for the day !! So, I wasted a whole workday, but without any inspection. Long story short, I got a call from the Inspector that Black Lion scheduled me for the day, but dropped the ball by not including my contact number in the request. He was kind enough to reschedule me for another day with a precise time, not a customary 2 hours window. Black Lion customer service had mishandled the appt., never followed up to check the status of inspection.

How to Request an L&I Electrical Inspection If you obtained your permit from L&I: Expand/collapse Contractors. Expand/collapse Property owners. Dear Member, As we expressed numerous times.... Washington State Department of Labor & Industries DOES NOT "work" for Black Lion Heating & Air Conditioning. While we understand that the process can be frustrating we have NO CONTROL over the scheduling, dispatching and accountability of this Agency. The Dept. of L & I is very clear that they do not "guarantee" inspection requests will be honored. Their own website expresses this; {Quote} "We will strive to get to your inspection within 48 hours of the date of the request. However, due to staffing reductions, it may take longer, especially if you are in a remote area." We apologize for any inconvenience. However, it ultimately is outside of our control. The service appointment itself went well - the technician was friendly, punctual and professional. Since this was in summer, the quality of the work did not come to light until a couple of weeks ago (Labor Day weekend, when the temperatures actually dropped and the furnace should have started working). I realized that it wasn't working and when I called Black Lion, they didn't even want to entertain the possibility that it could be due to their service. As a result, I ended up hiring a different company to rectify it. The technician found that the transformer and the circuit board were fried. Upon investigation, the root cause was found - whoever (go figure) put the cover of the furnace back had used a wrong (longer) screw which ended up going too deep and short-circuting some of the wires. This resulted in the damage. The repair cost me about $700 and the initial appointment for diagnosis cost me $220 (since it was a long weekend). And yes, I do have the receipts for these and the damaged wires are clearly visible - the technician showed it to me (and has written that in his report as well). All in all, the total cost of my annual furnace service was $1000. Update 10/1: After the review, Black Lion Heating & Air Conditioning contacted me to apologize for the mistake and reimbursed the expenses. I was impressed by the integrity - mistakes happen, but Black Lion Heating & Air Conditioning took accountability. Hence, I am changing the overall review to A (gives me solace that even if mistakes happen, they will take accountability) - this is good customer service.

The person answering the phone was not very helpful and very short , in the deal it states that as an option for an upgrade. While the Angie's List Representative and I called and tried to get a rough quote the woman was not helpful in offering an upfront quote until I mentioned I got other quotes from different company. Because of the demeanor I will be going with someone else.

AVOID THIS COMPANY LIKE THE PLAGUE! They were responsive in getting the appointment scheduled. The guy was punctual. The price was very good. The problem was the guy told me I should replace the control board and add a surge protector for the cost of $700 even though my furnace had been working just fine. He said the part was showing signs of wear. My furnace is only 9 years old. Then, all the sudden, a few days later when it got cold one night, the furnace would not work! I scheduled a return appointment but it something seemed fishy. The furnace had been working perfectly! It has been serviced yearly, no one has ever said the part looked worn, and then all the sudden, after Black Lion services it, it won't come on at all? After close inspection, I discovered he rigged it so it wouldn't turn on!! He took the metal bar on the inside of the furnace door and reversed it so that when the door was put back into place, the bar no longer depressed the start button. I reversed the bar to the correct position and lo and behold, my furnace is working like a charm. I will be canceling the follow up appointment and reporting this company to the BBB!

Dear Member, Please accept our apologies. Our Technician should have tested your furnace one last time prior to leaving your home, to assure that it was functioning. However, your furnace features a Control Board that we frequently find to have Failure of the Blower Motor Relays. As we were performing "Preventative Maintenance" on the unit, we feel an obligation to inspect and make recommendations that would "prevent" break downs for the upcoming winter. Thus, the recommendation to address the Control Board and add a Surge Protector. I am confident that our Technician did not intend to "rig" your furnace. Black Lion was very accommodating when I had to reschedule 3 times and when we finally set a date they were on time and very courteous. They wore protective covering over feet to keep floors clean, quickly performed all services with an emailed summary, and did not push any products or maintenance, only suggested replacing the Oil before next summer. Will use them again for any AC needs.

I called around to multiple service vendors to get their normal rate for furnace and AC/HP annual maintenance. Black Lion was just below the 50th percentile for pricing among four companies, and I scheduled them for service. The tech arrived on time and performed the work cleanly and efficiently. He pointed out an out-of-spec dual rate run capacitor that was on its 8th year of service and likely going to fail soon. I agreed to have it replaced without going online or calling around to get the "going rate" of such a repair (something I usually do), and was happy to learn after the fact that they charged a fair price for this service. Quality service is rarely the lowest competitive price, but as Black Lion proves, it can be fair and reliable. I would definitely trust them with maintenance and repairs in the future

Ben came to our home and answered all of our questions about getting a heat pump vs. an air conditioner. We decided to go with a heat pump and Ben arranged for us to meet at a previous customer's home to view the model we were considering purchasing. We wanted a quiet system and appreciated seeing and hearing the unit before purchase. Installation went well and was completed in the time that was specified. There were a couple of minor issues with the electrical inspection, but the electrician fixed those quickly. The unit works great and has made our home so comfortable during the hot summer we just had! I would definitely recommend Black Lion to a friend for any heating/cooling needs.

During the hot weather this summer we found it helpful to circulate the air in our house by running the fan in our furnace. We do not have air conditioning and this helped keep the house a bit cooler. We did this for a few weeks until we noticed that there suddenly was no air flow and we heard a high pitched sound coming from the furnace. As I thought there might be something wrong with our blower I consulted with Angie's List and based on the large number of very positive reviews they received decided to call Black Lion Heating and Air Conditioning. Black Lion sent out Braxten Tacbian, who identified himself as the person who was responsible for diagnosing and making recommendations, but not the person who would actually perform any repairs. He told me that I would have to make a separate appointment with Black Lion for someone else to come out to do the repair he suggested. I was a bit surprised that Black Lion would have to send out a different person to perform the repair, but understood at the time of making the appointment that I would be charged a fee of $68 (plus tax) solely for diagnosing the problem and providing an estimate. I also understood that this fee would not go towards any further work I might have them do. Mr Tacbian arrived within the expected time period. He was pleasant and congenial and my initial impression was that he appeared to be a trustworthy person with a professional appearance. Mr. Tacbian seemed to relate well interpersonally and interacted with me in a way that I was inclined to feel that I was getting good service. I was prepared to give his company high ratings based on my initial impression which would have been consistent with the many reviews I had read about this company on Angies List. After looking at my furnace Mr. Tacbian said the Blower Motor was "frozen" and that it had to be replaced. The written proposal for the repair included a Direct Drive Blower ($554) a Single-Phase Surge Protector ($218) and a Blower Assembly Cleaning ($166) which with tax added up to about $1,000. We also discussed the option of purchasing and installing a new furnace as I was told that my furnace being 13 years old was getting close to its life expectancy. They provided me with three proposals to replace the furnace with a brand new one that varied from $3,745 to $5,978. They also included an additional recommended option of installing a dedicated surge protector for a new furnace which they offered to do at a discounted price of $110 plus tax. Had this been the middle of the winter during the cold season which is when furnaces are more likely to go out, I would have felt compelled to act quickly to get the furnace fixed and probably would have gone along with Mr. Tacbian?s proposal to replace the Blower. I think it is likely I would have thought I was treated well and of course happy to have heat again in my home and may well have reviewed this company positively as so many others have done on Angie?s List. I may have also continued to take advantage of their yearly service which from what I can tell is less expensive than what other companies charge. Fortunately with it being summer I did not feel compelled to act quickly and decided to take the time to obtain a second opinion. I also had some concern about the recommendation of installing a dedicated Surge Protector which added over $200 to the proposed repair job. Mr. Tacbian said that the additional surge protector would protect my blower from going out again, but I noted that the current Blower had lasted 13 years without this additional protection and all I was hoping for was a few more years out of this furnace. I also didn?t quite understand why a dedicated surge protector was not used at the time the furnace was initially installed. So again after consulting with Angie?s List I decided to call a smaller company which also had a number of excellent reviews. When the serviceman from the second company came out to give me an estimate, which they indicated they would do without charge, he almost immediately noticed that the capacitor was leaking and determined that it needed to be replaced when he objectively tested it. Unlike the serviceman from Black Lion who would only perform a diagnostic service and give estimates, the serviceman from the second company was able to perform the repair himself without the necessity of scheduling another appointment for a different person from the same company to come out. The second company?s serviceman was also able to simply obtain a new capacitor from his truck and readily accomplished the repair which only took a few minutes on the spot. He said there was nothing wrong with the blower and that it was not "frozen." It started up immediately without difficulty after he installed the new capacitor. He also did not recommend a dedicated surge protector. It turned out the capacitor was an inexpensive $12 part and I ended up paying a total of $117 with tax to the second company for the service which also included a complete yearly service for which they generally charge $95. Since doing the repair I have started up the furnace several times and am pleased to report that the blower now appears to be operating flawlessly. I feel fortunate that my problem occurred during the summer when I had the time to obtain a second opinion and I am glad I did not just give Black Lion the go ahead to do what would have turned out to be an unnecessary and costly repair that did not directly address the problem. Although I would rather have not paid Black Lion for what turned out to be a poor and inaccurate diagnostic service I feel fortunate that I was able to avoid their costly proposed alternatives and consider the money well spent in learning to avoid calling them in the future.
Description of Work: They came out to diagnose and repair my 13 years old Bryant Plus 90 furnace. I understood I would be charged a fee of $68 plus tax solely for their diagnostic service. Fortunately I saved over $1000 by getting a second opinion from another company which ended up demonstrating that they misdiagnosed the problem.

Dear Member, To be quite honest and unfortunately very frank: From the sounds of it... 1. The Blower Wheel has still not been cleaned? 2. The Motor is still drawing excessive Amperage? 3. The Motor windings are still operating at high temperatures? 4. The 13 year old motor with a performance expectancy of 10 years is still in your furnace? 5. The $12 "fix" guarantees your furnace? We stand by our diagnosis; The Furnace needs a new Blower Motor, the Wheel Cleaned and a new Run Capacitor.
