I am completely disgusted with Bruce Heating and Air. Less that two years ago I spent over $14,000 for a new heat pump. The unit arrived damaged beyond use. So my family had to wait another week in over 100 degree heat without cooling. Less than one year later, complete failure of the unit, leaving my home over 90 degrees for another week while we waited on parts for repairs. Now it is less than a year form that repair and I am without heat due to yet another broken part and am being charged over $1300 in repairs. I would avoid this company at all costs!

This business doesn't stand behind their work. They were the HVAC contractor on my new home. The condensate pipe broke/came loose inside of the wall. It probably was not glued, which is what other contractors I consulted with have said. But they denied they were capable of an error. They admitted that the pipe is disconnected, they wanted to rip my walls open and "blame someone else" so they didn't have to fix it. Their own words. I had to give them 30 day certified notice of my intent to file a complaint with the contractors board. So - they then called me and demanded that I work with their contractor. They told me that the contractors board sent this person, and that the contractors board wouldn't be contacting me. I had not FILED the complaint yet, the contractors board didn't even know I had sent the notice. This was a blatant LIE! They were attempting to threaten and intimidate me and force me to agree to allow them to work further on my home. They told me this wasn't "their contractor" it was the contractors board representative, another lie. Their suggesting to ripping my interior walls open, was to remove my siding. Options they never suggested, because it would mean they had to take responsibility would have been, run a new line, or put in the condensate pump and put into an existing drain. They refused to even consider these options, because they would rather rip my walls open then come up with a logical solution. I've consulted with four other HVAC advisors on my options, and they all have said ripping walls or siding off is the last resort. Ralph and Nick at their company both had the same story of how the contractors board was making me allow their contractor to come in and open up my walls. I asked how the contractors board new of my complaint, they said that they had received a letter from the contractors board, complete lies, as the contractors board didn't know I existed. As i said, I had NOT filed the complaint yet. Other problems in my home Bruce created.... I have a unit in my ceiling, I was adamant that I didn't want it there,. they refused to put it anywhere else. The filter for the attic unit is over my stair case and I have to have a ladder on the stairs to change the filter. My A/C lines outdoors are not insulated, I have bare pipes and open electrical wiring. The ducting was supposed to be hung in the rafters it's not, and I now have a dropped ceiling in my basement, which I didn't want. My range hood was installed so that every time the wind blows it sounds like gun fire in my home. The vent flaps so badly in the wind it's horrible, I've made several requests for them to resolve this, they refuse. They also cut a huge slice into my kitchen cabinet when installing and didn't make any effort to repair it. My bid included a condensate pump, which had they installed this unit correctly and with the pump, I wouldn't have had a line in my wall break lose or come apart. The drain line that broke also drains ON TO my cement patio. They never installed the condensate pump which I paid for, so when there is an issue with the condensate drain line, the won't even fix it with installing the pump which I have already paid for. Rather than standing behind their own work they want to fight me every step of the way. There is a simple, logical fix for this, they won't take that route, they want to lie, blame, accuse, whatever it takes to deny responsibility for their own actions. If they do it this to one customer they will do it to others.

After I placed call to dispatch, the repair guy was in the parking lot in about 40 minutes, just the time when I was starting to get worried they would not call back. The first two calls I had placed to another (24-7) repair company that did not even call back until 9 am. These guys just showed up in record time (at 3 am). After he determined the unit was bad and too old to get parts in a reasonable time, it was just a matter of finding a new unit that would do the job. They did not have the correct size of the unit they really liked in stock so I had to go with my existing brand (LG). The only issues I had were the fact that they did not have any stock of the units they were really confident with and had to find another dealer to find an LG unit. But they did the legwork and got my unit replaced and working before it got warm the next day. I am very happy with them.

The day before our annual maintenance service, our air conditioning stopped working. Our heat pump/furnace is over 14 years old and we thought we were going to have to replace it. Luckily, last year we purchased the $125ish bi-yearly maintenance service. Bruce came out immediately, performed their service and found that a fuse had burned out and that there was a loose wire. He replaced both. Since we were having the maintenance done and he was already cleaning the unit, we weren't charged. I was very grateful I purchased the maintenance plan last year. If you have an older home and an older furnace, I highly recommend you purchase this plan. It will save you $$$.

My furnace worked but I felt totally taken advantage of on the pricing. I joined Angie's list as a result of this experience. Thanks for being in business.
Description of Work: The technician arrived and diabnosed the problem. He stated that a piece needed to be replaced. He returned with two and said that both should be replaced at once. This doubled the price quoted. After install I asked for the used pieces. THey appeared to be in good shape. Then I went on line to check the price I was charged. $125 each. I found the exact part, brand and part number for about $16.00 each. I called and said that there must be some mistake as I was over charged for the parts. I did not receive any justification for the pricing, no refund and thought their pricing was unfair.

My heat pump started making a funny noise when cooling. Called them up on a Friday afternoon and they said someone could come out first thing Saturday morning and that there would NOT be any OT charges associated with the weekend service call. The tech came out on time and diagnosed the problem and fixed it. He also added refrigerant which was a needed item. He gave me the invoice, I paid him, and when reviewing it in more detail later, I noticed that the amount charged was not what I was quoted on the phone. Turns out he charged me overtime on the diagnostic fee when I was specifically told when I scheduled that there would be no OT. I called about this twice and was told that they would research it and get back to me. They didn't call me back either time. On my third call, I was told that they would send me a check for the difference. I am still waiting for the check to be sent. On a side note, the service technician asked if I had a ladder handy and if he could us it (so he wouldn't have to get his off his van), acknowledged and appologized for getting dry wall dust on our shelf while removing the thermostat from the wall (yet failed to clean it up), and he also kep reminding me that Saturday was supposed to be his day off and he wasn't asked to work it until 4:00 Friday afternoon which made me feel very uncomfortable that he had to come out and service my unit, as if it was my fault he was there.

With winter weather quickly approaching, we decided we better hurry and have the furnace serviced to ensure no problems during the cold months. I called Bruce, Inc. after being referred by a co-worker. It was super easy to schedule their call; even with my busy schedule !! Michael was the technician. He was very professional, as well as explained everything to me for things which I needed described more fully. I was super happy with this company from the first phone call until the wave goodbye !! Coincidently, we made it through those cold winter months just fine as Michael said we would. J

The representative, John, showed up late for his appointment. When he did arrive he checked out the heating and cooling system and stated on his report (# 332106): “Checked heating and cooling system. A/C unit is in good shape, working great.” He found that three of our four coils on the furnace were not starting properly. To get them to work he said he "bypassed" some fuses. The entire house filled with smoke and smelled of burnt electronics. The day after he left the weather got warmer and I went to turn on the A/C. The outside compressor turned on fine, but the blower motor did not. I called the company and they sent out another technician...a very nice guy. He said the blower motor was "burned up." I called the owner or manager of the company (Ron) at the request of the technician. Ron was short with me and asked for the tech to be put on the phone. After a short conversation, he told the technician not to fix the blower motor. I sent Ron a letter asking him nicely to take responsibility and fix the motor and received no response.

Response from Bruce Heating And Air-Conditioning Inc
We received a request for inspection service on 9/8/09 and performed the inspection on 9/9/09. We met with him at the home and explained what was being done and why. If was also explained to him that there might be an odor, burning smell, since the heaters have not been on or may have not operated for a while. the other member was not present at this time and did not show up until later. John Stevens, service technician, did not rewire, change or alter anything in the furnace, other than jumper contacts for heating elements. I called and talked to him and asked him about the service and if there was anything John might have done to the motor. He stated that John did a thorough inspection and explained the system to him and that the system was running when they left. He stated if anything further was needed to call him. We received a call from the other member on 9/14/09 around 4:15pm. and scheduled a call for 9/15/09. George Massengale, service technician, went to the residence and found the blower motor out. I received a phone call when George was at the residence and it was explained to me that the motor was bad and needed to be replaced. In the member's letter, he stated I was rude and short with him. I did ask to talk with my technician so that I could ask him what the problem was and was it something we could have caused. George felt that the age of the system was more of the issue. I explained to member that I would look into the matter and gave them a more than fair estimate to repair the heating elements, sequencers and motor. I feel that John did not do anything that caused the motor to go out. I received both letters dated 9/16/09 and 9/21/09 when I got back in the office. I also asked John Stevens to write out what he thought and felt about the accusation of damaging the motor. Based on my conversations with John Stevens and one of the members, I do not feel that we have any obligation in any resolution. Ron Bruce-Sec./Treasurer
