+ 0 moreI ended up paying Steve $4900 for tree work and landscaping around my home. That's a lot of money, but when I look at all the work Steve did, I don't feel that he overcharged me. I found him to be very competent, knowledgeable, and reliable. He obviously takes pride in his work. He always let me know in advance before he showed up, and work was completed in a timely manner. He did an excellent job of cleaning up when he was finished. Steve says he's been in the tree business for 37 years, and I found his expert advice very helpful in determining what work needed to be done. He is mostly a one-man operation, but says he brings in other contractors for specialized work such as stump grinding.
Description of Work: I paid Steve Lambert $3200 (before tax) for tree service and $1700 for landscaping. The landscaping work included the planting of a dogwood tree (1.5-inch trunk diameter) and two vine maple trees (each with dual 1.5-inch trunks), plus installation of a timer-controlled irrigation system for the new trees. The new trees require frequent watering during their first couple of years. Steve guarantees the trees he plants, but only if he installs the irrigation system, which he offers to do at cost. Steve serviced 8 existing trees on my property. Two large paper birch trees had succumbed to a bronze birch borer infestation; he cut them down flush to the ground but left the roots. He removed two very tall arborvitae (including their root balls) that had overgrown their space next to the house. He topped off another large arborvitae, and cut off a medium-sized arborvitae flush to the ground. A 25-year-old ornamental plum tree had suffered significant storm damage; Steve cut off the broken branches; he then pruned the remaining branches, but did so conservatively to ensure the tree's survival. A large ornamental cherry tree was sending a thick root under the driveway slab; Steve removed a foot-long section of the root next to the driveway; he also pruned this tree. BTW, Steve recommends pruning no more than 10 percent of a tree's growth to ensure the tree's health, whereas other tree outfits might prune up to a third. Finally, Steve hauled away all the tree debris, including a big pile I had collected after a big storm a few weeks before.

+ -1 moreWe contacted Steve Lambert, and asked him to take a look at several large conifers in our back yard. He responded quickly, set up time to stop by our house that was convenient for us, and arrived promptly. After looking over our trees, he asked us about our goals for having the trees worked on. He actually recommended a conservative approach, and suggested we not have the trees pruned. He gave us the reasons behind this approach, based on research he had read. If we wanted some work done on them, he recommended a fellow arborist who could do a "crown cleaning", removing dead branches. He appears to truly care about the health of the trees, and not pruning or cutting them unless absolutely necessary. We appreciated his expertise and advice as a master arborist, and for not trying to sell us on work that we did not need.

+ -1 moreIt took a few days to contact and schedule Steve (not unusual after a big storm). Steve is a certified Master arborist and risk assessor who loves trees and was conservative in his recommendations. He did agree that 2 trees needed removal, one quite urgently. His schedule was very booked (out 1 month), but because of our concern about the badly damaged sweet gum, he promised to try to squeeze us into his schedule within 2 weeks. About a week and a half later, he called to let us know that he and his son would be able to fit us in this week end. The arrived almost to the minute of when they promised. They were careful about safety and property during the work and diligent about cleanup. They also took great care to not damage any other plants that were growing adjacent to the stumps. Steve was neither the lowest nor the highest on his pricing, which I consider very fair (low-ball bids are a red flag and I tend to avoid them just as I do the high bids). I would definitely use Steve again as well as recommend his company to others.
Description of Work: Asessed trees on property, made recommendations, and ultimately removed 1 severely storm damaged sweet gum tree and 1 problem spruce tree encroaching on foundation.

He was also very generous about sharing his knowledge and gave us advice about what to prune in our yard. He guaranteed his trees for one year and provided some tree gator rings to help us with watering. I only wish we had hired him years ago!
Description of Work: Steve removed a dying Stewartia tree and replaced it with a Japanese maple, he build a stone ring around our weeping pussywillow, removed a diseased cherry tree to ground level and planted three arborvitae for screeing. He also removed a wisteria and wooden arbor and planted a vine maple in their place.

He trimmed a hedge of 60 (10'-13') pyramidalis trees that surround the three sides of my backyard and had never been trimmed. My lot slopes from side-to-side and front-to back. In order for the tree line to be the same as one looks out, the tree height needed to vary along the hedge. Steve is particular to detail and understands other people who are, too. As I look out at my yard, I really like how nice the hedge looks.

+ 0 moreIt went just great. I called him and he game me an estimate and came out and was meticulous about the work. Took a lot of time evaluating the tree and took off the dead part. What stood out was his knowledge. He was definitely an expert landscaper. He was an arborist in fact. He knew what he was doing. He didn't just come out and trim the tree. He knew enough about the tree and what was wrong with it and what needs to be done. He was very polite, did a great job, cleaned up after himself. Knew was he was doing. His price was high, but I think it was because of his expertise as an arborist instead of just a landscaper to prune the tree. I thought the tree wasn't salvageable.

I was fortunate that Steve's schedule allowed him to come out to give me an estimate on a Fri. within 24hrs of my call. We discussed the pruning work needed; he provided me with a fair estimate for his services and was able to start immediately. Some of the work required him to use equipment that he did not have on site, so he arranged to come out Mon. morning to complete that portion of the job. Steve is an ISA Board-Certified Master Arborist and, as such, he approaches his work not only to please his customer but with thoughtful expertise and artistry ? taking the time to evaluate and explain the impact his work will have on the tree and its surroundings over time. He was prompt, reliable and worked efficiently through all the agreed upon tasks. When Steve?s work was complete, my garden looked lovely and cared for. I especially appreciated all the care he took with the Japanese maple tree ? a favorite of mine and the focal point of my back patio. I would highly recommend Steve and Lambert Tree Care services to anyone and I will use his services again in the future as needs arise in my garden.
Description of Work: Pruned a mature Japanese maple away from a neighbor’s house – lifting the crown where it arcs over a busy alley and away from my roof in addition to thinning the canopy to allow for filtered light on my patio. Also shaped a dogwood to encourage mid-tier growth over time, thinned a small maple tree to allow filtered light to lower branches, pruned a hornbeam away from a neighbor’s house, crown cleaned a pine, pruned a birch away from my roof, redirected a grape vine on a trellis, pruned an Oregon grape back away from the garage and a couple of rhododendrons back away from a walkway.

We ultimately did not go with them because we decided to get the tree removed and they didn't do tree removal at least at that time but only did pruning. + -1 moreI sent an email on his website on Friday and Steve got a hold of me on Saturday. (I think he called Friday afternoon as well, but I had my phone off and was unable to take the call.) He was working in the area, offered to come by and give me an estimate. We discussed what my options were and what could be done. Steve clearly knows his business and was able to answer any and all questions to my satisfaction. It turned out he had a delay in his other job and was able to do all the work that day. I was impressed by his professionalism, the results, and he removed all debris so it looked as if no one had ever been here (except that the trees looked a whole lot better!). I'd use him again in a heartbeat. Highly recommended.
