The crew matched the look of the house and the crafsmanship was superb. The porch is very solid looks great. The only set back was trying to get the roofer to complete the job as the project was started in the summer and they were very busy. Pete kept us infomrmed on the delay and in the end the quality of the work in the roof was excellent. Pete with Excel has quality sub-contractors that specialize in their craft and this is the second job they have done both with outstanding results.
Description of Work: Constructed a new front porch about six by eight feet with four steps and metal roof to match the house. We used Trex material for the decking and cedar for railings and post.

This was our 2nd job with Excel and were supremely pleased. Some highlights of our experience: 1. Pete is empathetic and reliably honest. We knew we wanted Ikea cabinets to keep our costs down, and we discussed with Pete the price of installation through Ikea's service vs. Excel, he told us frankly that we could save a little money if we went with Ikea. We did just that, and Pete was great about it. 2. The microwave we ordered was faulty, and even though it wasn't his fault or responsibility, Pete met the technician at our house to manage the repair process and ultimately help us exchange the unit for a new one. As crazy busy working professionals, this small act of kindness meant a lot to us -- one less thing to worry about, one less thing we had to do ourselves. 3. The old flooring in the kitchen was nearly an inch higher than the surrounding flooring it connected with. Pete and team demo'd probably 50 years worth of layers of tile, vinyl and who knows what else to get us the level floor we wanted. No small feat. It looks spectacular now. 4. The Excel team -- John and Javier in particular -- worked efficiently and coordinated a large project with multiple teams (Signature cabinets, Precision countertops) to make sure the project moved forward on schedule. 5. The only minor issue we encountered was some oversight on the paint job, a few spots needing touch up. I let Pete know and it was taken care of the next day. Overall another great experience with Excel. Priced fairly, great quality, and prompt customer service. We'd hire Excel again without question.
Description of Work: Kitchen remodel: demolition and removal of existing flooring and cabinetry, painting, appliance installation, new lighting fixtures, leveled floor and installed pergo, baseboards and transitions. ( Price does not include the cost of flooring, appliances, cabinets, countertops, lights)
This was the third time we hired Excel for work on our home and would do it again in a heartbeat. Here's why: 1. Pete, the owner of the company, is hands-down the most prompt, punctual and responsive contractor we ever met (and we met a great many). There were times when we were literally in line at Ikea with questions on an item, texted Pete and he replied within 3 minutes. He never failed to reply to an email within 24 hours, and he never showed up late for anything. Ever. 2. Pete's team - John and Javier in particular - are hard working, communicative, and trust worthy. By this time (our 3rd project) they were practically part of the family. They cared about us and our home and it showed in the quality of their work. When there was an issue, they came to us immediately and always proposed reasonable solutions that would save us time and money. If something wasn't done to our satisfaction (which only happened once, with a spot that needed some extra paint), they came back the next day and took care of it to ensure we were happy. 3. Excel isn't the least expensive contractor you could hire, but his pricing is fair and he's open to reasonable negotiation. Frankly, we hired the cheapest guy we could get for a previous project and learned that you pay for what you get. When we hired Pete, we knew we'd spend a little more but in the long run it would be worth the investment - and this proved to be 100% true. Plus he guarantees all his work, so if anything isn't up to par, you can rely on Pete to handle it. In terms of the basement project particulars, the Excel team came through as always. It was a short notice project on a tight budget. Pete, John and Javier made it happen. There was a lot of ambiguity with this project due to the fact that my partner and I were slammed at work and needed to get our house on the market in three weeks. So we just told Pete and the guys what we were going for -- a sale-ready basement that looked clean, bright and modern -- and let them handle it. There were a few things they had the attention to detail to notice that we had overlooked -- they came to us asking if they should address and made us aware what was out of scope and how much the extra cost would be. So we paid a little extra but were grateful these details weren't overlooked.
Description of Work: Numerous work items to fix up our basement to get it sale ready: prime and paint faux wood paneling and dark wood window casings, painting 2 bedrooms and hallway, install lighting in den and laundry room, bathroom face-lift (install new sink/cabinet, toilet, flooring, paint), painting brown bedroom and closet doors a nice fresh white + new hardware, replacing all electrical outlets and switches with modern white plugs and plates.

The work was done in keeping with Excel's name, and since I'm retired I was there to watch it all. As someone who knows the basics of construction, having grown up around the industry and having built a few houses of my own on Whidbey Island, I was probably a nuisance now and then, but when I had a question I wanted it answered. It always was. The demolition was quickly done by two men knew what they were doing and went right at it. The framing itself looked almost needlessly perfect, so much so that I commented that it resembled cabinetry. That brought a smile, "We do that too." The big window went up and in without accident--I couldn't watch that--and the sheathing marks and cutting (which I could watch) were again so precise that I thought of machine work. Excel's men are good enough to do this near perfect work effortlessly, without trying, by force of habit. I may know the basics of construction but I have never had anything like their skills. Visually, the most critical job is always siding replacement, which must match existing siding course-by-course. I was not there when that final work was done, and despite the skill already shown I felt anxious when I came home and stopped at the top of our driveway. Worry became relief and pleasure. There they were, in perfect alignment, two stories high with the tall window making it even harder to maintain alignment side to side. If you've ever seen The Marine Corps Marching Band on parade you've seen my new siding. Regimental order. Though I didn't do it, and couldn't have done it, I take personal pride in it every time I see it. And may the neighbors eat their hearts out, a little. A personal note about Peter Lange, the owner of Excel Construction. Contractors are like lawyers, a blessing or curse that we call into our lives to do what we can't do. Our relative ignorance makes us dependent on their honesty and continued goodwill. We all know the contractor who drags out the job, seldom comes by himself, sends a different guy every time, and when questions arise stops answering the phone. Peter Lange is the opposite of that man. He is highly intelligent, well-spoken in ways that make communication both pleasing and precise, and very patient. He is a gentleman. He takes personal responsibility for his business and relations with his customers. Alas, I do think I taxed his patience now and then, the sign of which was that at such moments he became especially patient with me. I was at one time almost sure that the new window was delivered in error--what we had couldn't be what we'd ordered--and rather than taking a walk with a backward wave of one hand, as many contractors would have, Peter made an appointment to meet with me and the sales agent of the window company at our home. I was still sure we had a wrong window; the sales agent assured me that we did not; and Peter quietly moderated between us. It can't have been the way he wanted to spend a hour of his day--ours was a small job, three days for basics, and only six thousand dollars. Yet it had Peter's full attention. Now that it's up, of course, the window is exactly what he said it would be--"very acceptable." That's typical of his quiet careful choice of words. What the window is, is absolutely gorgeous. I've had neighbors tell me so. How's that for suffering? Excel Construction is a full-service company able to work in many craft fields. My wife and I will rely on them alone for upcoming bathroom tile work, exterior painting, and anything else that needs doing. It's a great relief to have found a company in which we have this level of confidence.
Description of Work: A tall "step out" section of our home, including a large window, suffered dry rot damage by two decades of slow drainage inside framing from an improperly placed roof diverter flashing. An old story in Seattle. Siding, sheathing, window and framing had to be removed and replaced to current code, with siding painted.

My wife and I met with Peter Lange on Friday, 5/24 to get a remodel quote for a downstairs half bath and also installation of a back splash for our kitchen. We also said that if the job went well, we would like to have the upstairs master bath remodeled as well at a later date. Mr. Lange said that he would email a quote to us "early next week". On June 1st, Mr. Lange sent an email to us stating that he was "overwhelmed with work" but that he would get our quote to us "this coming week for sure", and thanked us for our patience. This morning (June 16th), Mr. Lange sent us yet another email stating that he had "been a little overwhelmed with work these past few weeks" and wondered if we would still be interested in him submitting a quote to us. Why would we want to work with and trust a contractor who can't even provide a simple quote in a timely fashion? If Mr. Lange is that "overwhelmed with work" how in the world did he find the time to come out to our home for a quote in the first place? We will be taking our business elsewhere.

I had Peter come and estimate a project that included drywall for several rooms and a bathroom model. He took several photos of the rooms and said he will provide an estimate in a few days. It's been several weeks and I have not heard from them. Calling the number and leaving a voicemail did not get any response. Update: Peter called me today and informed me that he had sent me the estimate 3 or 4 days after he met with me. He said he'd sent a second copy after receiving my voicemail about not receiving the estimate. We think he might have an incorrect email address. I will be updating this review again once I receive the estimate. Update: Peter indeed had an incorrect email address. He sent an estimate to the correct address and followed-up with a phone call.

I was extremely pleased with the contractor and his willingness to work with me regarding the timing of the work to be done and the resources available to complete the projects. He was very helpful in helping me prioritize the repairs I needed and made useful suggestions on ways to save money. His workers were courteous, helpful and efficient in their use of time and most of all, I was very pleased with the results. All work was done with a minimal amount of disruption and everything both during construction and afterwards was left in a neat and clean condition. I would hire this company again in a heartbeat, and after several prior disasters dealing with other contractors, am very thankful I found Excel on Angie's List. I got more than my money's worth and was pleasantly surprised at how stress-free working with them was.

We wanted the job to be a really small job. However, he found a lot of water damage during the work and it ended up being a big job. He did a super job of getting it back to shape. He was good at explaining everything and did a good job fitting us in even though it was a busy month for him. He was very conscientious with the needs of our tenants and he worked really well with both us and the tenants.

Fabulous! Pete came in early & under budget with an outstanding result. We were having our wood floors refinished & in adjoining room replaced; when the pergo floor came up, dry rot was on half the S. side of room at base of French doors. Floor guy only refinishes, no sub floor installation or repairs. After the reviews on Angie's list, we chose Pete & Excel to do the job; he was booked out until the following week with the rain due to set in on Friday (which it did). The French doors needed to come out to repair it properly. On Tues. he called & was able to squeeze us in on Wed. He had 2 men to complete the job in 1 day, Wed. They did a great job & came in early (before the rain)& under estimate! I'm so thankful & pleased with the outcome. We have an upper & lower deck replacement planned for this spring/summer; we plan to use them for this big project. All I can say is, "let it rain!" Thank you so much Pete!

Our bathroom/laundry room was flooded and after the dry out and remediation was done, we had some trouble getting the contractor that did the remediation to follow up and finish the repair of the bathroom portion of the job. I called Pete because of his high ratings. Pete came out the very next day to give me an estimate. He sub-contracted the tile work to an excellent tile team, and coordinated his people and a plumber to come in quickly so that we could get back to doing our laundry. Each step of the way Pete was very responsive via email and phone so I always knew where we were with timing and who would be coming on which day. The final product was beautiful. I plan on using Pete and his team again.

We own a rental home that was built in 1977. Our tenant told us that the acrylic shower pan in the master bath had cracked. We contacted two bathtub refinishing companies and were told that the damage could not be refinished or repaired. We decided to have a tile shower installed and received bids from three contractors that were highly-rated on Angie's List, including Peter Lange from Excel General Contractor. All bids were within a few hundred dollars of each other. We decided to choose Excel based on their Angie's List reviews and Pete's responses to our questions and concerns. Pete and his workers arrived promptly to demolish the acrylic shower pan and surround and hauled away all of the debris. We decided to upgrade to a tile shower pan and Pete provided helpful suggestions and advice regarding tile selection. After opening the shower walls he notified us of the decrepit shower valve and a two-foot square area of subfloor that had some water damage. He purchased and replaced the valve and repaired the damaged subfloor. He kept us informed of the progress throughout the entire project. We appreciate that he adjusted his work schedule to accommodate our tenants and agreed to raise the shower head and adjust the hot water setting at their/our request. Communication is very important in a remodeling project and we really appreciate that Pete answered our e-mails promptly and completely. Pete also graciously answered my questions regarding a bathroom remodeling project that was being done for my special-needs son who lives in Hawaii. We are impressed with Excel's quality of workmanship and attention to detail. Their work was completed on time and on budget and has increased the value of our home. Stay tuned for another review from us because we will definitely hire Excel General Contractor again!
Description of Work: Excel General Contractors demolished and disposed of the cracked acrylic shower pan and surround in the master bathroom. They installed a tile shower pan, cement board tile backer, and tiled the shower walls to the ceiling. Two corner shelves and a decorative mosaic tile stripe were also installed. The existing shower valve and water-damaged subfloor were replaced. Several pieces of water-damaged baseboard molding were also replaced. Excel installed a new chrome shower arm and head and raised the height of the shower head to accommodate a taller person. They also ordered and installed a semi-frameless chrome and clear glass shower door.

The crew showed up at a bit after 8 on the 17th and started the demo right away. While the demo was being completed, materials were assessed and picked up and brought back to sight. There was no wasted time as the framing and skirting were installed and the whole job was completed the next day. Jesse, the lead carpenter, was very skilled in his craft, and the rest of the crew was very competent in the completion of the project. Would I use them again? Without hesitation!!! Im having Peter Lange give me estimates on a few other projects around the house as I write this. If your looking for a crew for your next project, look no further than Excel.

Overall, the project went really well. John did a great job or conducting the work as cleanly as possible. They put plastic on the carpet, used dropclothes daily and covered nearby areas with plastic daily to minimize the dust. I couldn't have been happier with this aspect of the project. Workmanship appears to be good and they did a great job of being responsive to any concerns or details that needed to be corrected (although there weren't many). My experience was so positive with Pete, John and their subs that I am considering using them for a much larger project of building a detached garage/shop.
Description of Work: Excel did a remodel on my master bathroom, replaced a deck with PVC decking and aluminum railing and did a "makeover" on a secondary bathroom. For the master bath it involved removing all the old tile and fixtures, making the existing shower area larger, retiling entire bathroom, replacing all fixtures, lighting, tub and toilet, installing radiant floor heating and frameless glass shower enclosure. I also had a granite countertop and undermount sink installed. They hauled away all debris. Deck project involved removal of existing rotting wood and putting PVC decking down as well as installing an aluminum railing system. They hauled away all debris. As an afterthought, I had them do a mini-makeover on the kids bathroom which involved removal and replacement of the existing linoleum, and replacing the sinks, faucets, and fixtures. They hauled away all debris.

They were flexible on scheduling, punctual and provided a fairly detailed bid in a reasonable amount of time. We did not choose them because they were about 75% more (45k vs. 27K) than the other two bids we received. We were surprised by this as the house is about 1 mile from their office. When I let them know we were choosing another and why, I was told that he thought I wanted nice materials used. Well I do and I am getting nice materials, but 203k loans do not allow for luxury items. (none were specified in any bid/quote we received) I am not sure what he was planning to do for the extra 18K, but the to-do lists were the same. They probably do good work, I just did not have a chance to find out. I will try him again in the future for more focused jobs when the need arises.
Description of Work: We had Excel (Pete) come out to do a 203k renovation loan bid/quote for our house. There was minor damage and a lack of maintenance everywhere, with no single wall without one or more holes in it.

The job went well. Major parts of the house were torn off and replaced in an efficient and timely fashion. Questions were answered, problems were delt with as they arose. Some subs better than others but all good. Peter Lange provided a really good value in a professional and honest manner. Excel saved me lots of headache and expense with their decades of experience in the area. All the various project options were clearly spelled out on a seperate line on the bid proposal which made it easy to pick and choose the prority items to fit our budget. I would reccomend Excel G.C. for any project. Even the painter that was suggested later, did a great job at a good price. Overall, Peter Lange and Excell GC deserves an "A".
Description of Work: General repair to a poorly mantained 1800 sf two-level house built in 1957. Excel acted as General and provided project consulting as well as coordination, bidding, and management of multiple trades including carpentry framing, roofing, and masonry. The repairs included a crumbling and leaking chimney with loose flashing and missing mortar joints and a sagging/ rotted low-slope roof. An exterior paint job was performed by a seperate contractor that was suggested by Excel after I tried to paint my own house.

Great job. In addition some of them needed support posts and trim pieces replaced. All of these stands needed to be painted. All work was completed in on-time and the work site (basically the streets) were kept very neat. Because these were mailbox stands, the contractor need to make sure that the post office could access all mailboxes at all times. I could not have been happier with the quality work and the professional work. I would hire them again for with community projects. I will also keep them in mind for any home projects that may come up.
Description of Work: Excel General Contractors repaired, reroofed, and repainted 17 multi-box mailbox stands for our community association. They were extremely prompt in responding to our request for a bid and then completed the work in a very timely and professional manner. All of the mailbox stands needed to be re-roofed. Some of them need to have new sheeting and all needed new cedar shingles.

The job went like clock work with Pete doing the sub-floor replacement and dry wall tear out to exposue the pipes for the plumber who came and completed his job the next day. Pete then came back and repaired the dry wall the following day. Over the weekend I textured the repair on the wall and painted the bathroom. The following week the tub refinisher I contracted came in for two days to do his job and then Pete scheduled in the flooring guy right after it. Pete was very accomodating with allowing me to do the projects I wanted to do around the services I need done by him and his crew. Pete and the two sub-contractors, that he uses apparently all the time, were all experts in their field judging from the quality of their work and I will definately use him again for my next project.

The largest project was the most recent: Excel enclosed a backyard porch for us. This included installing a beautiful slate floor over our existing patio, plus the construction of semi-walls and a door, and the installation of screens between newly constructed columns. The entire project was handcrafted. We provided some sketches of what we wanted, and the Excel team took it from there, modifying the design to make it work, and even improving it. We now have a screened-in, roofed, backyard porch with a fireplace that matches the design and color of the house completely - it looks as though the enclosed porch had originally come with the house. Excel took the time to match the design details of the house perfectly: paint colors, small woodworking details, siding, baseboard, and columns. The screened portions were designed to be easily removable for cleaning and/or repair. We worked directly with Pete Lange and his brother John - they are easy to work with and they were always suggesting ideas and improvements so that the project came out exactly the way we envisioned it. Quality was our primary concern - and it was theirs too. It's a high-quality job. Neighbors remark on the work! In our previous home, Excel did numerous remodeling jobs and repair work. All top-notch quality. It was a very high-end home, so every job had to match the highest quality materials and craftsmanship that was already there - Pete and John did that, often exceeding the original work quality and/or correcting minor flaws that we didn't even notice before. One project: Excel built a long stairway through rockeries and trees, down a small hill toward a hot tub and waterfall that had come with the house. They surrounded the hot tub with a deck at the bottom of the stairs. The stairs also included a railing. Once again, the project fit the landscape and house design so well, everyone thought that it had always been there. Inside the house, Excel crafted a mantel for our fireplace - again making it look like it had always been there. We also had a laundry room door converted to a Dutch Door (the top and bottom halves of the door open and close independently). We could have bought a new door, but it would not have matched the other doors in the house. Pete and John cut the existing door in two, and finished it and hinged it so that it looked like it had always been a Dutch Door. We also used Excel to paint the house, requesting two heavy coats and really tight caulking - though we don't live there anymore, when we drive by we still remark on the quality of that paint job.
Description of Work: We have been using Excel for almost 10 years now, in two different homes that we have owned. Their work continues to be excellent. In every job we have used Excel for, we have found it easy to talk to Pete and John about our ideas. They do exactly what we want them to do - even improving on the ideas to make sure that what we envision in our minds actually gets built. The Excel team is very cooperative, too. You can do as much, or as little, of the work yourself as you want to - very easy to work with and very accommodative. While they are working on your project, Pete and John are always letting you know alternatives and always suggesting improvements. This is very important in remodeling work, because sometimes you just never know what you will find until the "wall is torn down." Then, it's nice to get alternatives clearly explained. Excel's pricing is clearly explained as well, and for us as always been spot on. If anything unexpected came up, Pete was always quick to bring it to our attention and to offer alternatives. We also think the pricing is fair for the quality provided. We have shopped around and compared Excel's work to other contractors. Sometimes Excel might cost just a little more, but the quality of the work is so much higher, and the service is so much more personalized - that it is worth every penny. We have had neighbors comment on the difference in quality delivered by Excel versus contractors they have used for similar work: it is noticeable. One more thing to note - and this stands out. Excel is neat. We have used other contractors who trudge through your house and leave a mess. Excel shows respect for your home and they clean up every day. It means they have to spend some time at the end of every work day to put the job site back in tidy order, but you really do come to appreciate that after a few days! And at the end of the job, you would never know they were even there. They vacuum. They use drop cloths. They even took all the trash with them.

The project went well and this was done with out disrupting the rest of the house. The crew from Excel was easy to work with and kept us informed as well as working with me so I could do painting myself. This was the best "bang for the buck " project that we have ever done and will be using Excel again in the future and will refer friends as well.
Description of Work: We remodeled the daylight basement that was formerly a 1960's paneling and cement floor into a warm and functional family room and guest room with bath. Excel tore out the 40 year old paneling and insulated and drywalled . Added new windows and doors throughout. A complete plumbing and tile update of the bathroom finished this formally unused level of the house into an area that we enjoy everyday.

We have seen firsthand , other kitchen remodels that have taken 6 to 10 months but the crew from Excel took our kitchen project start to finish in 7 weeks. Today we have a wonderful great room / kitchen that we love to entertain with, and proud to have.
Description of Work: We used Excel contractors for our kitchen remodel of our 1966 vintage home that brought it up to date. We started with removal of walls and reconfiguring the layout. The kitchen was replaced from the floor to the ceiling. Cabinets and granite countertops. Installing a full set of appliances. Plumbing and electrical updating. New windows and doors. Peter and John were great to work with and very agreeable to changes that we made during the process.

The project went very smoothly we are very pleased. The project moved right along with little disruption to our schdules. We had lots of discussions over the whole project. We felt very involved every step of the way. We needed the Garage to match the house. We did not want it to look like an afterthought. It matches the house perfectly. It is just what we wanted. Thank you.
Description of Work: We had a custom three car detached Garage with room for a shop built in our backyard. They handled the project from start to finish for us. From getting the plans drawn up, to getting the proper permits, dealing with the inspectors, arranging for materials delivery, kept the jobsite neat and orderly, minimal disruption to our schedules. They handled the foundation work all the way to finishing the roof. Handled all the sub contractor work, Plumbing and Electrical.
