NW Decorative Concrete

Our garage floor is aggregate concrete, with 50 years of use (oil, grease, etc.), and difficult to clean due to the peaks and valleys of aggregate. We were about to have an epoxy floor applied when we learned of a much better process. I read an article about decorative concrete floors, and how they are ground down, polished, and even waxed, if desired, to create a unique look. Jen came out to take a look, and said that they could grind the floor flat and smooth, and apply several different types of finish. She pointed out that once the aggregate was ground, the colors of the stones would stand out, and would create a unique design that could be sealed with a clear sealer to maintain the look. The floor would be easy to clean, and we would not have to worry about a coating peeling or fading as can happen with applied finishes. No "flakes" would be needed to create a design on the floor as you might do with epoxy. The job was scheduled for 3-4 weeks out, she called right on time to finalize a date, and her crew (Juan and Luis) arrived as scheduled. We weren't sure until the work started if all of the dirt/oil on the floor would come out, as it may have been absorbed into the concrete (in which case a clear sealer would show the stains). Jen called 2 days before we started to ask what color pigment I would want to add to the sealer if the dirt stains didn't come out. She was going to be out of town when the job started, and she wanted to have the right product on hand in case we wanted to add a color to the floor. How considerate to have a contractor think ahead for a change! The work took 3 days, hand grinding the floor to a smooth finish, in 2 steps as to avoid seeing any circular grinding marks, filling all divot and cracks, and applying 2 coats of clear sealer (they got the stains out!). Juan and Luis both worked hard, needed no supervision, and were very conscientious about explaining/discussing each step, and what the expected outcome would be. Everything went exactly as planned (how often does that happen?), and the floor now has a professional, and unique, look that will be easy to maintain. Much better than a cookie cutter color coating that may, or may not last. Great advice, great service and professionalism, and an owner and workers who are a pleasure to deal with.
