Did not have a very good experience with Hayes Roofing. First, I will say that the quality of work done on the roof seemed decent. The materials used seem to be of good quality. I had PABCO Premier laminated shingles in antique black installed on my roof. I was told the whole job could be completed in 1 day. I would have been fine if he said 2 days or 3 days. Since he said 1 day, that was my expectation. I scheduled a day off work when they were supposed to start the job (a Friday) so I could keep an eye on the work and progress. It ended up raining most of the day so they did not show. I received a call on Sunday evening stating they had to finish up a previous job, and should be able to start about noon on Monday. I received a call on Monday at 1:30pm that the crew tripped a breaker and lost power. Had to leave work and arrived at home about 2:15pm. Only one roofer was there. Reset two breakers to restore power and soon after the roofer left. I noticed they left a gate open (on a side of my house I never use) and also allowed themselves access to my crawlspace and propped the crawlspace door wide open. I have power outlets on the exterior of my house in the front and back but they accessed my crawlspace for an additional outlet. My crawlspace is used for storage and also my furnace and some networking equipment is down there. They shut off power to my network equipment! They never asked for permission to access this area, they just helped themselves. They also moved some chairs from my patio to a far back of my yard, set up a “break” area and left plastic bottles and travel coffee mugs. Overnight, a couple open packages of shingles that were on the roof, slid off and landed on my patio and in a flower bed. I have a dog and this could have caused serious injury to my dog or I if this happened while we were nearby. I informed the staff at Hayes of this safety issue and was told they would address the issue. On Tuesday, the roof seemed to be finished, except for new gutters that needed to be installed. On Wednesday, the gutters were installed and the owner sent me an email with the final bill attached and said he wanted to "pick up a check today". They don’t do a final walk-through with the customer. I looked over the complete job and noticed a few issues. They were supposed to install starter metal (written in the contract) but this was not done. I have an older home that does not have any overhangs/eaves. The roof ends at the exterior wall and I’ve had issues with water running behind the gutters and down the exterior walls of my house. They also did not clean-up debris very well. I found a few small pieces of sharp metal (snips from the drip edges) in the lawn, a coil of roofing nails in a flower bed, as well as small chunks of plywood, bits of plastic/cardboard from packaging, and several CIGARETTE BUTTS around my yard. On Friday, one guy from the crew showed up to install some special shingles for the ridge vent. I didn’t notice any were missing, but he said there was a small section that needed to be finished. I asked him about the starter metal and he stated they install everything delivered to the job site and no starter metal was delivered. He said he noticed the issues from water running down the exterior wall and installed the first row of shingles extended out so water should only go into the gutters. I am happy he noticed this and made an adjustment in the installation, but the job should be done as stated in the contract. On Saturday evening the owner finally got back to me and said he would take $100 off of the bill for the starter metal and asked to have the check mailed to their PO Box. Even though the roof looks good, there are too many negatives to give a positive rating.

It went very well. They found damage underneath the roofing and the head contact came and told us what they found before they proceeded and what it would take to fix it up. We said they could do it, so they did it. They cleaned up after themselves and were very neat. The crew members were very nice and polite. It was a good experience considering the problem and that it cost more than we anticipated. We researched and they were the best and most upfront about everything. We would definitely use them again.

They were suppost to come on a Wednesday and I took a vacation day so I could be home as they told me it would only take one day to do all the work. They came on Tuesday and when I got home all the roof was done except about 6 rows from the top. I was not happy but all looked good so I thought okay--- then I picked up my mail and found a registered letter from the roofing supply company telling me they would put a lean on my house if I payed Hayes roofing. I called and found out that Hayes was not paying for their supplies and I could indeed have to pay twice. Then the rooferes did not show up the next day to finish the roof, I found out they had run out of material and could not get more. After a long fact finding mission and some negotioations with the roofing supply company I promised to make my check to both the roofing supply company and hayes roofing so that I could get my roof finished. four days later I came home to find the last 6 rows finished. Then I noticed they did not put felt or shingles on an overlaping area (very small area) but I called and they came while I was not home and fixed it. Then I noticed that some of the metal starter at the gutters was missing and I called and they fixed it. Then about a year later I notcied that the roof in the garage area was leaking so I called, mean while I noticed it was leaking around the vent they had installed. They send out a man who did not speak very good english he came 2 hours late (7pm) and then he proceeded to tell me that it was due to pine needles on my roof. I have 5 large pine trees and they knew this when the sold me the roof ---- I was irate. I called and spoke with the owner. The next day I came home to find they had been there cleaned off some pine needles I called and they told me they had fixed the problem. To this day I am very worried about my roof and am saving to get another one.

Overall went very well. Started a little later than I hoped but once job started they did a very good job. However, problem cropped up in March, 2011 when the roofing material supplier notified us that they were filing a lien claim against us because Hayes roofing had not paid for the roofing material. Fortunately we had made our check payable to both Hayes roofing and the material supplier. Once material supplier (ADR) realized they had endorsed the check they removed the lien. Could never get a hold of the owner of Hayes roofing regarding the Lien issue - of course he was all over us to pay for the roof when the job was finished. I would warn anyone to make sure they are careful when paying that the Lien for materials has been satisfied.

They did a very good job. They have different crews that they send out and it really depends on what crew you get, whether it's a new crew or an experience crew. They kept the house water tight during the storm. They were well within the budget constraints in our bid. They did a good job. The whole job probably took a week and it was a fairly decent sized roof. No leaks so far. The crew had been working 12 years in the business.

It went badly on two counts. First the crew who came ripped 1/2 of the roof down to the sheathing. We got home expecting that the roof would be done, and it was only half-done, threatening to rain, and there was a mess in the yard. The crew evidently walked off the job for some unknown reason in the middle of the day. Neighbors said they were standing around talking and smoking much of the time they were there. The owner of the company had no explanation for why the crew left in the middle. When it began to rain and blow later in the evening, we called and the owner sent two guys over to tarp the house in the dark, windy rain. Some leaking did occur despite the tarping. I was afraid they'd fall off the roof in the dark! It took 4 days before a new crew could come and finish the job, luckily it didn't rain any more. The roof worked fine for a year. Then, a leak developed one year from the job. It took 5 weeks before someone came to fix the leak despite many calls.
Description of Work: Removed and re-roofed our house, about 1000 sq. feet.
