Tech come out 3 times over 4 months for $674, did not diagnose problem causing double electric usage. A competitor said over phone ONLY one thing can do that, a problem with heat strip. Eylander never even looked at heat strip. Then Eylander gave me estimate for cost to replace furnace coil of $800-1000. But estimate went up to $3480 in writing. Eylander's competitor said that's horrible, we don't treat customers like that. MOST IMPORTANT, their competitor found that Eylander's used the wrong sized breaker for installation, and wrong sized wire for that wrong sized breaker. Each of those errors are serious fire hazards!!! No apology or acknowledgment of error. Nothing!

I had these guys come out in December 2015 and install a 50 amp RV receptacle and sub panel for my RV. I spoke with John and he informed me over the phone that it would be $800.00. I thought great, sounds good. They came out later in the week and preformed the work. They did a great job with everything. My credit card was charged for the agreed upon amount of $800.00. Mid March 2016 I get a bill from them for an additional $300+ in labor and supplies. I called and asked why and they explained that there were more supplies needed and more labor to install said extra supplies. Mind you none of this was explained to me at the time of installation. I then told them that I refused to pay based on the fact we didn't agree to the additional costs. John, informed me to "F" off over the phone. John, called for months along with multiple people from his office treating me like a scammer or something like that. Fast Forward to 11-16-16. I received a call again from none other than John, who was looking for money that didn't belong to him. I informed him that although I appreciate his persistence, I am not paying the additional costs. He then threatened me by saying, and I quote, "I have your credit card number, I'm just gonna charge it." WHAT!!??? He openly admitted to conducting fraudulent activity on my credit card. Try it. It's cancelled. I will never refer them or use them again. I will also make sure that I get a signed contract. Fast Forward to 06/19/2017. Now I'm getting harassing phone calls from some random collection agency. Business must not be doing so hot if you have to chase after 300 bucks that's almost 2 years old, and doesn't belong to you. Give it a rest, it's getting pathetic.

When Steve promptly arrived, taking advantage of the knowledge I had already paid others to find out, he proceeded as we discussed and found the leak within a few *minutes* and had it repaired in about as much time (a crack in a joint had developed and needed to be re-brazed; it was arguably a potential manufacturing defect, but the warranty had recently expired anyway). Recharging an HVAC system with refrigerant requires evacuating the system which is a time-consuming process. During this downtime, he was able to take care of another maintenance issue I was told needed to be done by a previous technician. Steve happily used the interim time to take a look. Although the issue -- vacuuming out the coils in the furnace-side -- wasn't as urgent as the previous technician was making it out to be, he happily took care of it. (And, also being an electrician, he even repaired a failed GFCI outlet.) I asked about several other potential issues -- ones that I knew some other firms would have jumped all over as additional profit opportunitie$ -- and he gave honest and credible explanation about the situation and why it was unnecessary to do. I was impressed with Steve's honest, straight-forward, up-front and professional approach. (His receptionist was too.) What I had feared could easily have been a $2k - $5k+ repair, in part, due to both outrageously inflated rates as well as unnecessarily complex troubleshooting processes, Steve was able to accomplish for less than $800 which included some bonus repair and maintenance in the same trip. Facing the expected hot summer months ahead, I can tell you that my family is incredibly grateful for having a repaired heat pump that didn't cost us our family vacation to fix. Although I did not find Eylander through Angie's List, my wife suggested that they could maybe benefit from a good review which I was more than happy to do -- they deserve it. Interestingly, "Eylander Electric", seems to have some rather negative reviews. While Eylander Sales and Service and Eylander Electric do appear related (they have the same address), all I can say is Steve Fields took care of me and I am a satisfied customer. *ALL* of the other HVAC contractors I talked with that are also on Angie's List have "A" ratings. A good review doesn't excuse you from staying involved in your project to ensure you and your contractor are "on the same page" and things don't sideways.
Description of Work: Last Fall, our heat pump failed. It was installed over 10 years ago by a "popular, well-known 'energy services' company" (with an "A" rating on Angie's List) and was, unfortunately, just out of warranty. When I had them out to take a look at it, I soon became alarmed at how the situation was unfolding. Having a technical background and good troubleshooting skills myself, it became clear to me that the technician was going through a convoluted troubleshooting process that increasingly appeared to be geared for maximizing labor (and parts) expense. The focus was put on replacing expensive parts (such as the controller board) that could easily be ruled out using a different troubleshooting approach. When I started asking a few questions, the defensive responses I received quickly led me to get another opinion. I had another, well-known, HVAC firm (also "A" rated on Angie's List) send out a tech who was helpful and a bit more open to detailed discussion about the problem. He was willing to work a bit more rationally and helped to rule out the expensive parts, but he didn't have a lot of time in his assigned schedule to do any more troubleshooting. We had definitively determined the system had a leak, but unfortunately it was not obvious where it was. It would take another trip out (and another "Trip Charge") to do a "leak detection" service which, at $200+/hour, could easily cost $1k - $2k -- not including the cost of repair. Being a bit frustrated with that, I called for some additional quotes to do a "leak detection." Every firm I talked with was quoting "at least $1k" and probably much more to repair -- or might even end up having to replace the entire system to the tune of $5k+. With Christmas around the corner and the heat-wave pretty much over, we decided to "deal with it later." When the weather started getting hot this year, I talked again with the company that did the original installation to explain what we had discovered through additional troubleshooting and asked how much they would charge to just pressurize the system enough to find the leak. They refused to listen to anybody else's findings -- even though they could be easily demonstrated -- insisting they must follow their own "procedure" using labor rates over $200/hr. (and grossly inflated parts costs too -- I researched them in anticipation of what might be required). After calling many different firms in the Seattle and Eastside area (nearly all of which have "A" ratings on Angie's List I might add), I was either not confident in their intended approach to identifying and solving the problem or would have to wait for many weeks to even look at it. I was beginning to lose hope in finding an affordable solution to repairing our system. My youngest son and I started praying for "an affordable solution." While sharing my Tale of Woe with my brother-in-law, he recalled that a firm he hired several years ago to do some electrical work, Eylander Electric, might also do HVAC work. He felt the guy he worked with was honest and straight-forward and suggested I give them a call. I am so glad I did. (And, it's probably a good thing I did NOT check Angie's List first as I explain below.) My initial call was quickly routed to their Service Manager, Steve Fields, who returned my call promptly. Even though they are based in Everett, coming down South was not a problem at all and an appointment was easily set up within the week. Still being wary of getting ripped off when I *knew* key components of the system were ok, I laid out the situation and asked how he would approach it. I knew within minutes that Steve "knew his stuff" and was being honest with me. He suggested a simple "divide and conquer" pressure testing strategy of isolating the outdoor heat pump unit from the indoor furnace side by taking advantage of valves that were already installed in the unit by the manufacturer for holding refrigerant when the unit is shipped. It was a straight-forward approach -- with the best labor rate I could find anywhere -- so I decided to give him a chance.
