+ -1 moreCarl is a crook. He appears to be a decent plumber though he allowed the excavator to backfill the water main with native soil. The city inspector said after the fact that the pipe needed to be bed in sand. By that time we were already in a dispute with him over the price of his work and we ended up re-digging the trench ourselves, bedding the pipe in sand, and backfilling. Carl also never got around to installing our shut-off valve. Carl's price for the water main was out of line with all other sources I consulted with but the real place he burned us was in the cost of the sewer line. He charged us $127/LF for a job that should have been AT MOST $50/LF. Even $50/LF is very generous given that he did no excavation or backfill, and other sources (plumbers, sewer contractors, and various construction pricing publications such as RS Means and others) quoted prices more in line with $25/LF or less. I would seriously caution anyone about using his services!
Description of Work: Carl, the owner of the one-man company, laid 70 LF of 4" side sewer pipe and lowered an additional 25 LF of existing pipe in order to get the fall we needed for the sewer line. Excavation and backfill was done by a separate contractor that I hired. He also replaced approximately 30 LF of 3/4" galvanized water main pipe with new 1" pipe. Again, he did no excavation or backfill.
