Description of Work: They power-washed and stained several hundred yards worth of community fencing. | |The job went smoothly from start to finish. They have a professional crew that was always on time and did a great job, even in several areas that were hard to reach with traditional staining methods. I'll definitely consider using Krause again on future projects both interior and exterior.

Steve Krause impressed me when he came to give me the quote, so even though it was the highest quote I got I chose Krause House Painting to do the work. I made the mistake of assuming that a hihgh quote meant that the job would be done to a high standard. Steve's crew came to pressure wash the exerior of the house a few days before applying the stain. There was one part of the siding were I had removed ivy, but the remains of the ivy were still visible on the siding. Steve's crew attempted to remove the remains of the ivy with the pressure washer. They were able to remove the remains of the ivy, but the marks in the siding left by the pressure washer were much worse than the original ivy remains. Also, during the pressure washing one of the crew broke one of the sprinklers in my backyard. They reluctantly promised to fix it, but never did. A few days after the pressure washing Steve's crew spent a couple of days applying the stain to the exterior of the house and then another day to do the decks. My main concern was that they took no regard for the quaility of their work. It seemed sufficient to them to apply the stain and move on. This meant that the stain was applied unevenly and they even missed quite a few places. They also painted over bird droppings and previous streaks and runs in the stain. They also added new streaks and runs were they didn't back brush properly, and they did a poor job of painting the edges of the doorway onto the upper deck. Steve didn't seem to monitor the quality of his crews work and it was left to me to point out all the mistakes. The worst part of the experience was that they were meant to fill old nail holes in the sidings. After completing the staining, I asked if this had been done. Steve said it hadn't and he'd do it now. The problem was that his crew used the wrong color sealant (they used a light yellowy-brown sealant on a dark stained wood). They then tried to cover this up by painting more stain on top. So now instead of having invisible nail holes in my siding I have about 20 big square patches of stain that don't blend with the first coat of stain. Steve attempted to fix the problem the next day by applying thinner. In some places he was able to make it better, in others he made it worse. In his defence, Steve pointed out that when he gave his quote it was for applying a slightly less transparent stain than the one we finally chose and that at my request he had applied a second coat to places that needed it at no extra charge. However, I don't think this is any excuse for the sloppy job that he did, especially considering I had quotes that included two coats of stain for considerably less.
Description of Work: Krause House Painting applied one coat of stain to the exterior of my house and front and lower decks.

Great job! We highly recommend Krause Painting for any paint job. The exterior painting and deck work went very smoothly. His crew was very professional, efficient and friendly. The clean up was excellent, they all paid attention to details and completed the job ahead of schedule. Steve?s bid was very competitive with the other bids we received and he was very responsive in returning phone calls and following up with us. Basically, he stayed on top of the job until it was finished and was on-site supervising the painting and taking care to make sure all the final touches were completed to our satisfaction. Also, Steve?s recommended color consultant, Renee from ColorWhiz, was well worth the couple of hours she spent working with us to come up with a new color combination that we are very happy with. We ended up with one cracked window after the painting was complete and paid for. Steve worked with a local glass company to replace the window in a timely manner and provided touch up painting all at no additional cost. We have recommended Krause Painting to friends and would definitly use them again.

To problem arose with the final bill. It turned out that the additional work quoted at $50/ per hour was actually $50 per worker per hour. Krause had three workers here the whole time. The quote should have been $150/per hour. I felt VERY misled and angry that this was not made clear to me upfront. I explained to Mr. Krause that when someone quotes you for an hourly rate that is what you would expect to pay. Hours were added into the bill with no way to verify that the workers were doing the painting work, the trim work, or the front door. This is too bad, because, otherwise the work was good. Anyone who uses this Company should make sure to ask for a final dollar quote, which with painting, is sometimes hard to do. Otherwise, you leave yourself open to cost overruns that as a customer you can't control.
Description of Work: I hired Krause to paint interior walls in our home. The bid came in at $3,100. We also asked that he perform additional work on the front door and to touch up the trim paint in the interior. On the quote sheet the additional cost for this work was $50/per hour no final amount was set. This was our mistake. They started the work and added on costs for paint color changes and materials, that were not in the quote. The color changes he told me verbally would be $100 to $200, the actual bill was $500 for these changes. They arrived on time and his workers were polite and hard working. They did a good job on the painting.

I very much enjoyed working for the family and I regret the miscommunication. The job included two bedrooms, an entry foyer with stairs leading to an upstairs hallway, bonus room and back stairs. The bid was based on repainting the walls in these areas and a ceiling in one bedroom. The client brought in my colorist to help with the color selection. She did a fantastic job of bringing life into the home where there was your commonplace builder beige before. The bonus room was done in “Lego” colors to simulate the colors of a tree and sky. That room alone had four colors, which makes for a lot of cutting. The other areas also had multiple breaks as well as a wall inset in the hallway to be hi-lighted. My colorist always reminds my clients that an up charge will be included when the creative juices start flowing. There was most definitely more than your normal accent walls and I know the client loves the work and hope she can appreciate how much more work went into it than a couple of hundred dollars. The trim touch-up originally ordered by the client was supposed to originally include only the entry foyer and stairs. As they saw that we had an excellent work ethic, the client added a large solid mahogany door with side-lights. The door had extensive sun damage on the outside and was in need of sanding and three coats of oil based varnish, which takes 24 hours to dry between coats. The entire door had to be hand-sanded, vacuumed, tacked and masked. If I remember correctly, the job took 3-4 days. If I had just put on man on the door, it would have taken 2-3 times that long and we didn’t have the time; nor do I think it’s in the client’s best interest to string a job out any longer than needed. I always look to find the fastest most efficient way to complete a task. The client also added touch-up in the bedrooms and other trim in the house. I’d like to try to help clients understand what the cost is to the contractor for individual employee. On top of my employee’s wages, I have to pay FICA, Medicare, Fed unemployment, Washington Unemployment and workers compensation for every employee, every hour they work. This amounts to $20.00 to $25.00 per employee, per hour on top of their wages. My $50.00 hr rate is on the very low end of hourly rates when compared to the other trades. Especially when I know how hard my guys work. If the rate was $50.00 an hr. for three guys, I’d be paying the customer. So; my mistake was for not quoting “$50.00 per hr per person”. I appreciate the grades we received for the quality of work we did and I will definitely work on my communication with the customer. And just a side-note; Mr. and Mrs. D’Arcy decided the matter was worth taking to small claims court. The Judge sided with Krause House Painting.

They did the whole job in two days from start to finish with a crew of five that arrived punctually at 7AM and seemed concerned about the details and quality of their work. These were not guys that Steve (owner) had just picked up off the street. They knew what they were doing I was thrilled to have them in and out that fast. I had expected it would take a lot longer based on previous experience with painters. As a person with interests in small business myself, I talked with Steve about how he managed his business. He's very big on efficiency. The result seems to be that he does good work faster for less money and makes more himself.

They are doing the interior right now, and their work is spectacular. They?re doing meticulous jobs; they?ve refinished the walls, repaired all the popped nail heads, and re-taped everything. On the day of painting, I found it odd that Krause wanted me to take down the light fixtures, saying he was afraid of electricity. It was his job & I expected him to do it, after all he had been painting houses since 1973 & I doubt that my house was the first to have light fixtures. The next odd thing was asking me to pull back the gravel that lay against the house. Again I said, it was his job. Several days after the job was completed I noticed over-spray on plants, & outdoors table. The plants will live through it and the table can be scraped. There are also a few bubbles where the paint had lifted meaning water was trapped between the house and the paint. Finally, the flaked paint that his son removed still lay on the ground around the house. There was also quite a bit of paint left over so the job wasn t estimated properly. In the past, I ve always painted my house myself. In the future I will save my money and do it myself. I'm reminded of the saying "act in haste, repent is leisure". I should have waited until next year. It really didn't have to be done this year.
Description of Work: I have a one-story approximately 1200 square foot house to be painted. The house was in good condition with no major scraping to be done. I had already power washed the house. His price was about the same as others I had spoken to previously.

We had used Krause Painting for a partial painting of the exterior of the home, and had a good experience, so decided to use them for the deck as well. I contacted Steve via email (which is convenient), and he was out to the house and sent an estimate a few days later. He's not the cheapest, but for me I'd much rather pay a bit more for quality. His team was out to pressure wash on the day and time he said they would be there. Unlike other experiences, we had little water intrusion via a back door (water came in near the top where our door gasket has a gap). When they returned a few weeks later to sand and stain the deck, they took extreme precautions to protect the rest of the home and plants. It was like they weren't even there when they left. Time will tell, but from appearances, it's the best deck wash and stain we've ever had. I think his suggestion on color was also spot on.

From the initial work estimate to the final work review, I was impressed with the professionalism Steve brought to the job. He was very clear from the onset what he would be able to do. Since there were several other repairs needed on our house, he assisted me in prioritizing what I needed to do (roof, gutters, get a handyman to assess possible dry rot) prior to the painting of our exterior. His bid was within range of others. He was chosen because he was confident in his crew and was able to schedule the painting within 6 weeks of the bid. There were a few changes and they were handled promptly. We are very pleased with the results.
Description of Work: Prepping the exterior of our 3 story house was the most time consuming. They power washed, scraped, sanded, primed, and then taped down covers prior to the paint application. His crew was punctual and we were impressed with their diligence. We appreciated their attention to detail and that they would ask questions for clarification.

When Steve came out for the bid, he was thorough, professional and efficient. He answered all my questions. He conveyed good impression of both experience and customer service. His bid was not the lowest I received, neither was it the highest. I was looking for quality first, price second. The pressure washing was done about 2 weeks before the rest of the job. Once Steve's crew came out to do the pre-work, the job went very much according to the schedule Steve laid out. It took 6 business days to complete (I think there was 1 day lost to weather). Steve's crew was very good at their job and they were respectful to my home and my neighbors. I was out of town for a couple of days during the job and needed to give the crew access to the inside so they could paint the front door. There were no problems with the security of the house and everything was left neat and tidy. At the end of the job, I did a walk-thru with the crew foreman. I noted 1 area of the trim that had been missed and some over-spray on one of the window frames. Both issues were taken care of immediately. The job turned out great. The house looks terrific. The job is high quality and I'm very happy with it.

Communication with Steve was great. He answered any concerns or questions. The work started when he said it would, and the crew stayed on the job until it was finished. (Approximately three days.) He and the crew also graciously and without complaint repainted the trim when I requested a change in the color midway through the job (which of course added to the length of time they needed to complete the job.) I would have no hesitation recommending this business again.
Description of Work: The bid included pressure washing the house, scraping, sanding, and caulking where necessary. The first coat was back-brushed or rolled, the second coat was sprayed. The trim received two coats. The front doors were sanded and sprayed. A fence adjacent to the house was also painted.

I was generally satisfied with the job. Highlights were professionalism of owner, Steve Krause and expertise of his lead, "TJ". Both very knowledgeable and did a very thorough job of prep, which is critical. Less satisfied with work (and required re-work) of less experienced painters on crew, who worked hard, but were less precise in paint application and clean-up. Some overspray, little spills which weren't cleaned up, and minor damage to plants and ground cover. Overall I would rate the experience as a 7.5 out of 10.
Description of Work: Wash, prep and paint exterior of two-story, 3,300 sq ft residence. Prep included securing loose soffits, caulking all open seams and joints, applying oil base primer to all soffits to stop knot bleed-through. Painting included two spray coats with back brushing, velvet finish on siding, eggshell finish on windows and hand-brushed, semi gloss on six exterior doors. All same color, using high-end Miller Evolution. Paint surfaces in good condition to start with.

He was on time for his bid. His crew was very thorough in their prep. They took their time and the final result showed. They finished our house in two and half days. Steve was easy to work with and I would definitely use him again. My wife was home alone while the painters were here and they were very well mannered and cleaned up everyday. We also used the color consultant he works with and she was great. She helped us pick a color to compliment the lot and our sense of taste. The only downside was he was a pricey quote. But for the job he did it was worth it.

HE ALSO GAVE ME SOME GOOD INFORMATION ABOUT REPAINTING THE EXTERIOR - SOMETHING I'M NOT PLANNING YET, BUT KNOW NEEDS TO BE DONE IN THE NEXT TWO YEARS - AND ANSWERED QUESTIONS I HAD ABOUT EXTERIOR PAINT, EVEN THOUGH I WASN'T DOING THAT JOB NOW. HE LOOKED AT THE ROOM, TALKED ABOUT WHAT I NEEDED DONE AND GAVE ME AN ESTIMATE ON THE SPOT ($800). I DIDN'T WIND UP HIRING KRAUSE PAINTING AS ANOTHER WAS SLIGHTLY LESS EXPENSIVE AND I HAD USED THAT PAINTER BEFORE. BUT I PLAN TO INVITE THEM BACK TO BID THE EXTERIOR PAINT JOB WHEN I GET TO THAT PROJECT.
Description of Work: I NEEDED TO HAVE FAMILY/TV ROOM REPAINTED. ROOM IS LARGE (19X24) AND HAS HIGH CEILINGS AND A STAIRCASE MAKING ACCESS TO WALLS COMPLICATED. WORK WAS ALSO BEING DONE AFTER SOME CONSTRUCTION, SO THERE WAS MORE THAN AVERAGE PATCHING AND PREP WORK TO BE DONE.
