It was excellent! They were out here when they said they would be, they explained everything, they gave different options, and they were reasonably priced.

Description of Work: Installed a geothermal heat pump system. Had some issues during installation that were taken care of. About 5 weeks after install it stopped working, took about a week to get it fixed. About 5 weeks later it stopped working again, once again about a week to get parts and get it fixed, then heating season was over. Next heating season it goes out again. Thought we a 5 year warranty but was told that was the manufacture warranty and that the parts that they used to hook it up only had a one year warranty, but said they would replace that part again since it already failed twice. So they did that 2 more times and it still did not work. Then they finally figured out that there was stuff getting stuck in the flow regulator, and had me put a filter in line and they replaced the flow regulator and so far it has worked but it has only run for about 2 weeks, and now the heating season is over. So it only worked for a total of 6 weeks this season and we won't find out till this fall if it heat. And we paid for the new flow regulator and installation of it because they stated they could not help the fact that there may have been stuff in the water. We had to buy electric heaters and close part of the house off to keep it from freezing up the pipes. We also paid for the filter system that services only the geothermal system. I have checked the fillter and there is not much in it. So think most of the stuff that got in it was from the start up because they used a old existing stub out, in stead of installing a new one, that probably had collected some stuff in it when the new water line was put in. Also they knew that the water source was a spring and never mentioned that it could be very sensitive to anything in the water. Anyways what it boils down is they are not the cheapest but we thought we were getting a good warranty and good service for the higher price, which did not turn out to be the case. If have any questions you can call me at 509-684-5139.

Response from Norstar Heating & Cooling Inc
First off I am sorry in regards to the perception you have of our work. However we always reacted to your needs in a timely fashion and covered everything under warranty with the exception of the last invoice. We have heaters at our office which we loan out to our customers in emergency circumstances and you would have been more then welcome to borrow them from us. We got the call in mid February this year about 4 to 5 months into the winter, so I am not sure why you claim that the system only ran 6 weeks this winter, maybe 6 weeks after the repair? We eventually decided to replace the complete valve under warranty, unfortunately none where anywhere in stock and had to be specially ordered, This took longer then expected, but was completely out of our control and as soon as we had it we replaced the valve. At that time we discovered that the regulator was plugged with foreign materials and we finally discovered the cause of the problems we were having. I was told by you that you had great spring water, the fact that you do not use any filtration or any other equipment to treat you water made me believe that you were correct and there lies probably my mistake in assuming that was correct. The almost $2,300.00 I spend on the warranty repairs are technically not even warranty, because the failure were due to external factors and not due to a defective product. I decided to take that amount under warranty because I should not have make certain assumption based on the information I received and observations I made. I take my service and warranty serious, so next winter should not be an issue, because at the end of the day I take care of business and would cover any issue under warranty if related to the original issue. We installed a quality Geo-Thermal system at a very reasonable price and we covered everything, with the exception last invoice of $199.00 under warranty. We reacted to all your needs and we always communicated to you on a regular bases what was happening and kept you in the loop. In all the conversation we had during this process, you where always cordial and we did never received any feed back from you that you were unhappy with us, because I normally try to react to that kind of feed-back pro-actively. Your equipment is still under warranty and we will react, as always, in a timely fashion to deal with any issues you might have.

The owner is great. Came out to the house when he said he was going to. Gave us an estimate and we booked the job. We were told the whole process would take two and a half to three weeks. The job took twice that long. The owner went out of town unexpectedly. Once that happened, his workers would show up in the late morning and leave mid afternoon. Average work day for them was five hours, Monday through Thursday. At one point, we questioned where the unit was going to be put and the forman blew up at me. Completely unprofessional. Then about a week later, he brought it up again and blamed his blow-up on me. There was poor scheduling and time-management throughout. They were supposed to rent an excavator for a week to get the trench dug and filled. Excavator came Wednesday evening. Remember, they don't work Fridays, so the excavator had to leave the job before the trench was filled. They also ruined about 100' of my fence with the hoe. The crew ended up asking if they could use my tractor to help them fill the trench. I took time off work to use my tractor to help them, so I wouldn't be liable if they hurt themselves with my equipment. At no time did anyone from the company think it was unprofessional to ask to use my equipment. When the owner got back, I told him everything that had happened (minus the use of my tractor). He apologized and took $3,000 off the price, so I feel he "did right by me." He did say his guys would come fix my fence this spring, and I'm still waiting. I don't think they will ever show up. In then end, we are happy with the product and the quality of the work they did. Would I recommend this company? Yes, but with a serious warning...

Just recently moved to the area, the home I purchased had been vacant for some time.A/C unit was not cooling. Called Norstar and spoke with Kristen. She was very upbeat and a made my appointment for the service technician to arrive on 07/18/2012.Wayne (Service Tech) was very professional, answered all my questions and proceeded to work on the unit. It was extremely low on freon, and Wayne topped off the unit. Then he proceeded to check for leaks. There were three leaks, all on the valve cores. Wayne did not have any cores with him (and they did not have any at the shop) but he noted to order them and come back out on the following Thursday (07/26/2012) to replace them. Updated - they came and finished the service by replacing all three of the valve cores and topping the unit off. It has run like a champ since. Wayne was very conscientious and very thorough. My two Labrador Retrievers are good judges of character and both liked him alot, which is unusual as they are very protective of the house and my son. I would recommend them to anyone who asks.

Description of Work: I called Norstar to send a serviceman to find and fix the rattling noise coming from the vicinity of the propane boiler. He diagnosed it as a faulty heat pump, which he replaced, though it took him 2.75 hours instead of the 30-60 minutes he had earlier estimated. He also replaced a faulty zone board. I paid $641.20 ($39 for the service call, $189.75 for labor, $138.78 for the pump, and $213.38 for the zone board). The next day the rattling sound was back just as before. So Norstar sent a different serviceman who discovered that the pump had been installed upside down. So he took it out and reinstalled it correctly in just a short time as opposed to the first serviceman's lengthy labor time. There was no charge for this service call because it was their mistake. The next day we noticed the rattling sound was back. So the previous day's serviceman came back and determined that it was a faulty check valve, which he replaced. Voila! No more rattling sound. For this I paid $140.60. After talking to the owner, he did give me a refund of $120.75 for part of the labor charge of the original pump replacement. Since the original diagnosis resulted in the unnecessary replacement of a heat pump (which turned out not to be the cause of the rattling sound), I think it would have been ethical to not charge for the pump or for the labor to install it.
