We provided a $25K deposit for a job and were told the job would be started and completed the next month. The next month came and went with no communication. I called them. They said they needed two more weeks. I asked if we should prepare for the work. They said yes. We prepared for the work which also exposed part of the roof to the elements. Two more weeks came and went with no communication. It poured down rain on our exposed deck. I called them. They didn't have the material they needed to start the job (apparently they didn't order it when we sent them the deposit? Why did I need to call to learn this?). They needed two more weeks. Two more weeks came and went and I called them. The material was not there. They needed "a few more weeks". They said they would come a**** the situation today. They never called, they never showed up. I called and emailed them and received no answer. Now they have $25K. I have an exposed roof. I have zero communication from them that means anything. I don't know when the work will actually be started. I am starting to research suing them to pay for the $25k deposit and additional damage to my roof. Decide for yourself if you want to hire them.

This is very unfortunate. We have been in conversation with [Member Name Removed] and working out details on mobilizing for the work. Unfortunately, there has been material delays that were out of our hands and went longer than expected which did not help us in gauging the schedule and our lack of information we could provide our customer. We have not performed the work yet and deciding on that date now. Thank you.

Poorly. Contract signed end of February 2018, paid a $4765 deposit, with a promise to start in a few weeks. Quote was $9529 for a new ERS 26 gauge standing seam metal roof. Delay after delay, with work finally starting in June. We expected some rot, and owner ordered 2x6 t&g cedar at owner’s expense to cover material cost. Esary quoted $75 per hour to repair rotten t&g cedar. Unbelievably they managed to consume 79 hours at $75/hour for an additional total of $5925. This for labour only to replace less than 400 sq.ft. In the end the cost to us was over $20K for this roof. The quality of workmanship was poor. Cupped cuts on each and every eaves end, fascia boards carpentry very poor and sloped wrong way for our gutters to drain! Work site littered with nails, scraps, torn tarp pieces. And, they left with our new corn porchbroom and a large jar of tarp screws we had used to repair rips during a windy winter season. Very poor customer service! And confrontational.....

*** Final update: After more discussion DJ agreed to provide a full refund minus the cost of the tarp. He also finally became apologetic as well. I don't know what made him change his tune but it was nice to finally get this resolved so we can move on and find a new roofer for the job. I still stand by my original rating based on my experience and would not use them again, nor suggest them to anyone. ***Update: After many conversations via email with DJ and then reading his reply to this review the frustration continues and I am at a loss. He has claimed over and over to have maintained honestly but this is clearly not the case. When initially coming out for the emergency call they did not tarp the area to keep it dry. As stated previously this was done the next day by my husband after going out to purchase a tarp. If debris is a common cause for intrusion then why wasn't any debris at all cleared at anytime? This seems like the most simple and first step that should be taken. The explanation that their first evaluation was wrong was not explained to us after they started on the repair. This was done only when we called after the fact to verify that all the work was finished. This was after different (unauthorized) work had already been finished. The caulking he speak of was not there prior to their work, or at least not as severe. This is also the first I am hearing about a plan to reschedule them to come back to clean debris. When it was found to be leaking still (not even 24 hours later) DJ only sent a crew out to re-tarp at our demand. He has not been cut off in any shape or form. He attempts to blame our frustration on having a leak in a recently purchased home, the frustration with Esary comes from nothing but the failings of Esary to correctly bid and complete a job they had been paid to do. I am requesting a full refund since the wasting of their time and mine as well as their materials is no one's fault but their own and I should not have to pay for their lack of skills in assessment and planning. Original Review: After purchasing a home the beginning of October 2014 we quickly learned that we had at least one leaky skylight out of our 12. We contacted a few different vendors and ended up choosing Esary to handle the job. To say I am disappointed in Esary's communication, customer service and work ethics is a huge understatement. Originally to get a bid guys were sent out quite quickly and we were given a quote shortly after the fact. This required a down payment of $1000 which we promptly supplied. We were told initially that they were behind due to rain so that the job would not be completed for one month. Frustrating, but we understood. In the interim it would have been nice if they would have done something, anything to prevent further leakage and water damage while waiting. My husband ended up having to get up on the metal roof (in the rain) to set up a tarp to avoid further damage to the cedar ceilings. A month goes by and no word from Esary on a date for service. No updates provided whatsoever. Every time a call was attempted I was told the person handling my job would call me back, they never did. Finally able to get a hold of D.J. we were told the job would for sure be done before Christmas. Well, Christmas came and went without any communication from them at all. Every time I would call the main office they would tell me that "D.J. has you on the schedule this week" and more similar run arounds. Fast forward to the second week of January and workers finally came out to do the job they were hired for in October. They finished the work in half a day so when my husband came home I voiced my concerns. It didn't seem like they could possibly finish with 12 skylights in that amount of time and also I noticed the skylights weren't pulled and still had old debris on them. He spoke with Esary and was told that the job in fact was completed and that what we had given as a down payment would suffice for the entire job. This seemed too good to be true being it was half of the originally quoted total. The very next day the skylights started leaking again, in the exact same spot. My husband went up on the roof and noticed that no amount of $1000 worth of work had been done. The old filler that wasn't working to solve the problem before hadn't even been touched, let alone re-flashed as planned. All they did was do some major caulking that my husband could have done himself. They also left garbage from the job up on our roof. D.J. was contacted immediately and told about our concerns and that something needed to be done. It was suggested that at least they needed to come back and replace a tarp in the mean time to prevent further water damage. They once again came out and put a tarp up and my husband was given a new suggestion of work that would easily solve the problem (this was by the same employee who made the original bid). He declined and said he wished to continue with the original plans that we were quoted and agreed to. He then gets an email from D.J. discussing the bid for the new suggested work that we never stated interest in. More recently today we received an email from D.J. stating that the work originally quoted in the signed job bid cannot be provided with the skylights as they are. In a nutshell Esary has given us a detailed job quote stating they would remove old flashings, replace with new flashings and re-install our old skylights. They came out and did work completely opposite of what was originally signed off for. Subsequently the leak issue was not solved and continues to cause problems. They are now saying their original plans absolutely cannot be completed and will be keeping our $1000. They are obviously lacking in ethics and continue to jerk us around. We are asking that they come remove the extra flashing they added that did nothing but add bulk and refund our money so we can have someone else come out and finish their poor excuse for work. This review is also posted on Yelp and we are contacting the better business bureau.

Response from Esary Roofing & Siding Co Inc
This is sad and unfortunate. When we came out on our emergency service call we initially tarped them to get the trouble area in the dry. I provided a proposal based on what we saw from the area of skylights that were leaking and the way the others were flashed and a roof cleaning of the debris since this sometime is the issue as well because of debris backing up causing water to run sideways or intrude. As per the schedule we were at least 4 weeks out to get out there to do the repair. The area of concern was in the dry till we returned. With the schedule, we base it on the projects ahead and we have to work around mother nature so it makes it a challenge to keep on schedule but we do our best. We experienced a delay with projects going long and mother nature keeping us from doing the work as well. This delayed us on getting out to start the repair until now. When we got to work, Our first evaluation of the skylights were wrong and I explained that to them after we stared on the repair. We then noticed that there was a lot of patching of caulking and mastic around the area of leaking skylights. We then found out that all the remaining skylights were veluxe and they require a kit to go with the skylights. We evaluated them and noticed that the skylight flashing was adequately done and we should not and I can not reflash them with out changing out panels, etc.... It would effect the warranty as well. We decided to install a new ridge piece at the trouble area. After discussing that with Matt, he agreed with the final invoice that I was going to mail out. What was forgotten was the cleaning of the debris from the roof and I was going to reschedule that with them. That is my fault but This is where it went sideways. The ridge piece did not work so water was still intruding. I could tell the frustration from the clients and I understood but I tried explaining the situation and I think the frustration was at another level then. I had a crew run out and tarp the area again to stop the water. From that point on we have been discussing a resolution to this and I was looking forward to helping them get this resolved. I can understand the frustration but I have tried to explain the situation.. I can understand there frustration with us but we try to do the best for the homeowner and if we can not help, I will try to help them in anyway possible to find a solution. That is where I have been cut off. I have called and emailed them on this. We have been a family owned corporation for over 47 years making it a priority to make our customers happy and satisfied with there home investment. I feel it is unfair to say we just took there money and that is not true. This is unfortunate and I have explained the situation and have been honest. I do understand that some frustration may be boiling over from purchasing a home and then all of a sudden water is coming into your home. I look forward to finding a solution.

It has been two years since Esary replaced the composite shingles with some new composite shingles. So far so good, no leaks and the new shingles still look great. We used Esary based on the work they did on the building I work in, and overall they did a great job. The workers were punctual and diligent, cleaning up each night and at the end. They also installed tie offs on the top of our roof (which is sloped at 45 degrees on both sides, classic A frame) - none of the other roofers who bid offered this. This single thing has helped other contractors immensely (we've since re-sided and painted). Much of our underlayment was dry rotted and needed to be replaced. Perhaps anticipation of such was built into their estimate, but this did not move the end cost very much, and we appreciate that. However, the bid was quite a bit higher than another we received. We chose Esary ultimately because we didn't want to screw around with our roof and used the "you get what you pay for" logic. Hopefully that holds over time.

Shingle roof installed on small home 2005 because roof leaking. First clue something wrong when workers had no means of mechanically loading materials onto roof and lifted them by hand! Appeared to have no supervision and my concern would have prompted me to complain, except that I had agreed to the hiring of this company at the insistence of my mother, who was adamantly convinced that this was a superior company. The roof leaked badly with rain immediately, D.J., one of the owners, came numerous times with caulking gun, which did stop some of the leaking, but he was unreliable and often stood me up. Also a preexisting skylight dripped copious amounts of water with hot weather (temperature above 87 degrees). D.J. told me he did not have time for my problems because he had to make a living and his wife was pregnant. He refused to answer my calls for five years. I reported the company to BBB and his brother Brett came in 2010 and wrapped chimney with plastic, turned the sprinkler on it and results were inconclusive. One of his crew took me aside and whispered that he would recommend a chimney expert inspect the mortar. I did, and problem was solved by replacing the mortar. It turns out that this is a common problem when roofs leak! Ridge vent shingles were replaced by Esary at the same time with solid shingles in 2010 to address skylight problem. This seemed to work until we got a very hot day two years later. No response again to my phone calls, but the problem was and had been very infrequent. In spring of 2013 I had further concerns when the smell of mildew appeared and the roof was sagging and warping. I called and received no response until sending a certified letter requiring response or I would contact the BBB. I also contacted five roofers and was told that I have a roof that is self destructing and I needed a lawyer and a roofing consultant. 7/15/14 Continuation - necessitated by earlier computer problems. Esary agreed to open roof in effort to ascertain source of problem in June of 2013. I arranged to have an expert roofing consultant company present. Their detailed report with photos outlined many errors and omissions, code violations, structural problems , defects including lack of necessary venting, improper kind of materials. Findings agreed with what manufacturers rep reported to me independently. Esary agreed to replace the roof, which by that time consisted of mushy pulp infused with mildew, but lapsed into the usual delays and and unlikely excuses. I was forced to engage another company to replace the roof. The skylights all function normally again, as they had before Esary's roof. Esary engaged a lawyer to dispute all findings and a decision to take this to court. My construction lawyer advised against playing along with further delays (two years for court date) and expense. He stated that Esary was invoking a six year statute of limitations on warranties in Washington State, which conflicted with Esary's ten year guarantee, and which had not been disclosed by Esary. This explains the incessant stalling and lack of cooperation. Also, the warranty was not voided by solotubes, but the solotubes themselves would not be warrented because they were installed by someone else. I tried for eight years to work with this company. The attitude and demeanor has left me feeling threatened for my personal safety. No resolution occurred. I have not encountered this type of behavior with any company in my 72 years of life. I feel that if I had not been a single female, the outcome would probably have been different. Allegations of abuse are bogus.

Response from Esary Roofing & Siding Co Inc
Unfortunately I am writing to answer to a sad situation and a total lie. The roof was installed back in 2005 and we offered her a 10yr. workmanship warranty. With in couple years she called because there was water intrusions BUT not when it rained, but when it got hot in the summer or cold in the winter, an obvious condensation issue. When I visited Ms. Hill I was made aware that there was two solar tubes cut in the roof and installed by someone else and we were not informed. Our warranty states that you can not cut into the roof unless you coordinate with us so it does not void the warranty. I informed her that the water was coming in those two locations and the cause was they may not have been cut in correctly. I informed her that this is a cause for your warranty to be void but would work with her on getting this fixed. That is when I started to feel uncomfortable. She started to abuse me verbally and tell me that this is my fault and we need to fix it but the issues were the tubes, not the roof. It only dripped through those two areas so this was obviously not a roof problem. There was no reasoning with Ms. Hill after that and she kept calling and verbally abusing me and my company in ways that I feel are wrong and inhumane. I then tried to meet her again at her place and see if we could help, again. That is when I felt uncomfortable and after not getting a word in and taking abuse after abuse, she then physically attacked/lunged at me. That is when I had to leave and then reached out to a third party, my manufacture rep, to help mediate this and supply her with more information that would maybe help her understand what is going on. She met with one of my roof techs along with the rep and once she was given the information that it is a condensation issue and not the roof, she again became abusive and made both of them uncomfortable. From that point on she has done everything in her power to make us look bad because of an unfortunate circumstance of not going by what your warranty says. Put the blame on someone else. I then contacted my attorney to send a letter to please stop saying things that are not true and to quit slandering my company and me. She then went after my insurance company for a new roof and hired a company last August to install a new roof. My insurance company kept me informed through out. The end result was that the roofing company she hired to replace the roof last august did not document anything from the roof that showed there was anything wrong and therefore she was held responsible for the roof. The bottom line is my company has been around for over 48 yrs. and we work in the best interest of our clients and I feel our 47 plus years in business as a family owned and operated professional company shows. It is unfortunate in life that you can't make everyone happy and some people just choose to not ever be happy.

Description of Work: Unfortunately, the person who arrived from Esary to do the estimate (for new siding) was continually distracted from our discussion by his phone and he seemed to forget several things we had already discussed regarding the project. The follow-up phone call that he said he'd make never actually came, and finally I had to call the office to get the estimate. He stated it was somewhere on his desk, gave me a "ball-park" number from what he could remember, and said he'd forgotten to mail the paper copy but would mail it the next day. I never did receive the estimate, and won't be using Esary for any future projects- this communication Fail was enough of a red flag; I wouldn't recommend using this company based solely on their poor communication. Perhaps in the future they will remedy this problem?

Our LP siding was buckling and swelling and needed replacing. We contacted Esary Roofing and Siding. Scott from Esary Roofing came to our home and gave us a quote to replace our existing LP siding with Hardiplank within 48 hours. We decided to have Esary replace our LP siding with Hardiplank. Scott gave us several great suggestions on ways to update the look of our home, which we implemented. Within 2 weeks of getting the quote Esary Roofing had begun the process of tearing off the old siding and replacing it with Hardiplank. This was accomplished in sections so that very little of our home was exposed to the elements for more than 24 hours. Our home was resided in 8 working days and we are very happy with how it looks and with the quality of the job done! We appreciate the suggestions Scott made and how patiently he answered our questions and concerns. He was efficient and professional.

I contacted Esuary about two months ago, and ended up talking to Scott. I'm replacing the door on my hangar in Concrete and I wanted to schedule siding work so I could get it covered and insulated as soon as possible after the installation. Scott assured me they could handle it, and asked me to check back a little sooner to when I needed the work to start. I contacted him again about three weeks ago. He'd lost my email and the spec sheet I'd sent him with all the details. Never having looked at it. I sent it again. Not hearing back from him, I called him again after a few days. and quot;Oh, that's Pat's department. I sent your information to him. He's on a job in Anacortis and will contact you when he canand quot;. That was a week ago, and I haven't heard from Pat. I don't really expect to. They've never contacted me. I don't know who Scott is, but I sure wouldn't trust him for anything, and I wouldn't want him working for me. I found another company on Angie's list. They came up right away, and checked out the job. Metal and insulation is ordered and they'll install it as soon as it comes in, hopefully in a few days. But until it's covered, I have a whole wall exposed. I have to camp out here for security, and Hopefully the plastic doesn't blow off.

I contacted Esary roofing on July 10th for a bid on my leaking roof, and was contacted by his salesman/estimator to schedule an appointment. He was on time, seemed very professional and knowledgeable, answered some questions, made a couple suggestions, and said I would receive the bid in a couple days. On July 15th, I received an email from the owner, DJ Esary, with a quote in the form of an abbreviated contract, and after clarifying a couplet things, exchaging a couple emails, I signed the contract and returned it to him on August 10th. I asked about when it might be done, and DJ told me he would try to get it scheduled late in the week of 15 August, but we would definitely get it scheduled the week of 22 August since I was leaving town the week of the 29th. His assurance that it would be completed by the 26th of August was the reason I selected this roofer. After several attempts to reach him, I finally talked to DJ on Friday afternoon, the 26th of August. After listening to him explain that they could not find my paperwork as a reason he had not called me back, I inquired about why he didn't have me scheduled as "promised". He began yelling at me, telling me that he never promised anything, he had encountered rot on another job, was being held up by other contractors, etc. I can appreciate that he may have encountered some delays, but I feel he could have followed up and let me know he could not get the job done this week, and I don't think it was necessary for him to take out his frustrations on me, I felt that was very unprofessional, I don't need to be chewed out by someone I am attempting to do business with.
Description of Work: Needed to replace one roof vent, install four more vents. His bid for the job was $650.00

We are sorry for the inconvenience. The schedule did not work out for this project to be done at the time the customer wanted it finished. We offered to let him find someone else since we can not meet those demands and would rather have the customer happy to move on to get it done rather then be upset with the schedule we can offer. It's unfortunate we could not help out.

The company did as promised. They stripped off an old shake roof and cleaned up all the debris. The new roof was done in a professional manner. The workers were especially polite and communicated with me what they were doing at every phase of the job. They encouraged me to inspect their work. I was very impressed by their courteous manner professional work.

First I would like to say I am not someone to give negative reviews. I haven't had too many negative experiences and when I have it wasn't much of a big deal and I've let them slide, giving everyone the benefit of the doubt. This was the first major job we had done to our house and it was expensive and it's just been bugging me that it just wasn't what I had expected. First - our neighbors did the research for the roof (and they wouldn't just hire anyone, they choose who they felt was best) - mainly because they needed to have their roof replaced and we didn't feel (right then) ours should be done but could wait another year. But then we decided we should get our roof done while we had the funds to do it so we got decided to go with the same company and they were going to do the neighbors roof one day and ours the next. Everything was fine to start - no set date was given as with all the rain, the company was backed up with work - again OK, we were fine with that. We rec'd a call (on a Friday I believe) from the company letting us know the work was going to start on Monday on our neighbors house and ours on Tuesday. We were still OK at this point even though our neighbors were out of town. The crew showed up for work the morning they were going to start our neighbors roof. I went to work expecting to see a new roof on their house. It wasn't done - which is not really a big deal, it's construction, the dumpster hadn't arrived until later in the afternoon so they couldn't do it. So I called Esary to find out if our neighbors house was now being done on Tuesday and ours on Wednesday (which I thought was logical), and because if so I would have to make sure cars were moved as we had family from out of town (their car) and we had our neighbors car in our driveway + our cars and they would be dropping off another truck to remove the debris from our house in our driveway. This is where the problem started. After telling the person who answered the phone why I was calling, I was told (not very nicely) "just a minute, I don't know". Well, it was an older woman and the end of the day and maybe it wasn't the best day for her?? Anyway she comes back on and says "yes". Because she only said "yes" I wanted to verbally confirm (so there was no confusion) that their house was to be Tues and ours Wed. and that the truck to remove the debris from our roof would be their Wed morning. Once again in not a very nice tone she told me "I don't do the scheduling, just a minute". So when she comes back on the phone she informs me both houses were being done the same day, surprise, good thing I called to check. OK great their both gonna get done, yippee! Well the next morning (8ish) I get a call from one of the owners wanting to know why I called the office. That we had talked and confirmed the days and I had no reason to call the office, he states it's construction and things change. I said I know and started to explain my reasons for calling the office. He interrupts me and starts talking (I don't really remember what but his tone was kind of like how a guy in a car lot talks to a girl - you know they think you're ignorant). Anyway, when he's done saying whatever it was, I again tried to tell him why I was calling the office and it was a good thing I did otherwise we would have had a driveway full of cars; once again he interrupts me - this time louder. My husband was across the hall laying down with the door closed, his sister was in another room next to the room I was in while talking to DJ. Both my husband and his sister ended up in the room I was in because they could hear DJ through the phone and wanted to know what the problem was. I took the phone away from my ear and told them what was going on, put the phone back to my ear and waited until DJ was done and once again tried to tell him what I needed to do with cars, etc. and when he tried to interrupt me again - I admit I wasn't going to have it - I told him to listen to me. DJ says under his breath "oh boy, I don't believe this". OK I hope that wasn't too confusing - another reason why I tend not to do this because it can be too wordy. Alright Tuesday morning the work starts, I leave for work, my husbands gone, I come home from work and start watching (inspecting) the work. I want to know the roof is being done the best it can, especially after the altercation with DJ that morning on the phone. I'm standing in my backyard watching. I watch one guy lay one of the roofing sheets. He puts 4 or 5 nails in then moves to placing the next piece down. He decides the pieces don't line up (I guess) then rips the piece off he just laid down, lines up the tile again puts a nail in to hold it and lines up the next piece (ok this time it looks good). Puts another 4 or 5 nails in the tile (that makes 11 nails for one tile) and on he goes. I have this bad feeling. I go into the house where he was just at and look at the ceiling. I can see where a nail almost came through. So I start walking around the house looking at the ceiling and found one more spot where a nail almost came through. (OK not too bad, it's construction and things like that can happen, I get that). But it gets me wondering about how many more places in the roof did they use 10 or 11 nails for one piece of tile??? We didn't have them replace the plywood sheets, they said they were in good condition (but still 15 years old). I gotta admit I am a little worried that it holds up through the winter and rainy months and I don't see any leaking. (I'm probably being overly worried??) After they were done, I wasn't real impressed with the cleanup either. They didn't use a broom to clean up. They used a blower and blew the driveway and patio areas into the yard. I have a dog and cat, they saw them. There are kids in the neighborhood. Why would you blow staples and nails into a persons yard. I know it's construction but come on - that stuff can hurt someone and I found quite a few staples and nails in my grass. Yes I looked. I have animals and my grandson at my house frequently and his friends playing in the yard. I don't want them being speared by these sharp objects. I also found staples in the siding of the house - what's up with that! Under the eaves in quite a few places the plywood was pulled apart from the nails. Was this because they used another 10 or 11 nails for one tile and nails were hitting nails forcing them through?? I am disappointed in myself for not contacting the other company I reviewed (Gurnee Construction) to see if they did this type of work. I honestly didn't think of it as this kind of came upon us last minute. I hope in all my ramblings you have gotten the gist of what I am trying to say. Over all, once the work started, I was not impressed with this company. The roof isn't the old three tab (I believe is what it's called) roof but a tab where every other piece is raised. Which on nicer high end homes, the professionals line these up nicely and the roof looks great. (we're middle class folks) I look at my roof and it's kind of curvy looking, mis-matched. I don't know how to explain it. It isn't horrible but enough for a home owner (me anyway) to see how it looks off. Everyone has to make their own choices, this company had a good, fair price, the salesman that came out was very friendly, DJ was even friendly until I called the office. This was my experience, maybe yours was better? Update 8/30/10 - I forgot to mention that our neighbors nor us received a call back from the company asking if we were happy with the job - no email either. I went out to their website and I could not find anywhere that stated they were licensed, bonded, and insured. They may be but maybe they don't give that information unless requested?? Don't know why it wouldn't be on their website though.
Description of Work: Salesman came out and provided estimate. Company tore off the roofing slates, hauled away and installed new roofing tiles.

We are so sorry for the inconvenience. We strive to make our customers happy. This project was in accordance with the neighbor as a special package we offered to them. The neighbor next door was very happy and satisfied with there new roofing investment. We installed the same product with the same crew and unfortunately we were 1 for 2 for customer satisfaction.

Esary Roofing may be in Burlington, WA. But they work in Seattle area and the San Juan Islands. Staff was Very professional and accommodating and communicated status through out the entire project. Roofing crew was very polite and really cared about their work. My house had some challenges because of an addition put on a few years back. The crew went the extra mile to make the roof look right despite the miss match where the old and new roofs came together. Crew was prompt and cleaned up the end of every day of this ten day project. Extremely happy with Esray Roofing from start to finish.
Description of Work: Tear off existing wood shake roof, install plywood over skip sheeting, install felt paper and 24 gage standing seamed metal panel roofing.
