Quality was excellent. Professionalism was excellent. Don't know the price of their work with respect to other providers, but we felt that they provided excellent value. The price exceeded the original estimate due to change orders so if you're not familiar with bidding or know exactly what you want completed, I would say to budget for an additional 10% to allow yourself some flexibility. Would highly recommend their services.
Description of Work: We used Devonshire Landscapes to design and build our front and back yard. They replaced and added retaining walls, built decks, removed and/or regraded, added sod and plants. We now use them for our maintenance and they do a great job with the maintenance and upkeep.

Will is professional and friendly. His team showed up promptly and the needed equipment was delivered. The team was well trained and did a great job. They worked late to complete the job in one day. They cleaned up the work areas and left everything in a pristine condition. We are very happy with the work and the way it all happened.
Description of Work: Lower the grade of back yard by 6", put in soil amendment and spread new grass seed. Lower existing flagstone and reset on new bed of compacted crushed gravel base. Remove existing lawn, regrade and install sod. Apply fertilizer to both areas and top dress with peat moss.

Great. Matt was responsive in returning my call and providing an estimate for the insurance company. Once the settlement came we scheduled the work and when they arrived it was done in two days. He also did some extras for me while he was here and was very fair in his prices for that work too. Recommend

We recently had a garage built and permeable pavers were required for the driveway. Devonshire Landscapes submitted the most reasonable bid for installing Ecopriora pavers and building two retaining walls using Manorstone blocks. Rick Fox, the installation manager, was attentive to the details of the design we had in mind. Frequently we have dealt with contractors who have listened to what we wanted and then failed to make sure their employees did the work as specified. That was definitely not the case with Devonshire, we got exactly what we wanted and in a timely fashion. Their workers were courteous, friendly and always willing to explain the work as it progressed. We would not hesitate to use them again in the future.
Description of Work: Installed two retaining walls and approximately 1,000 square feet of permeable pavers.
Devonshire has been fantastic. I have used them for 8+ years at the various houses I have owned. In addition to this backyard overhaul, they provide weekly services to keep our yard looking good. For this project the team had to rip out the grass we had which had drainage issues due to poor soil, and the paver patio. They then had to level the yard and custom cut flagstones to create a new patio and install a synthetic lawn. In addition they installed a different lawn in the dog run. The supplier of the synthetic lawn was difficult and relatively non-responsive due to high demand and odd scheduling, but Devonshire was able to work through the chaos and make it all work out. Over the years we have looked at other options, but have remained because the service cannot be beat. When there is an issue with a plant, they are very responsive to get it fixed, and they stand by the work that they do.

We've spent almost $100,000 on our house over the past 5 years... new decks, chimney repair, roof, windows, new fireplace, plumbing, concrete work, landscaping, etc. Needless to say, I've dealt with a lot of contractors. Working with Will and Rick at Devonshire was really great. The project was complicated because of slopes involved and because we were planning a deck installation at the same time that affected the landscaping work. Rick Fox, our installer, was super patient and provided valuable input at key decision phases. He has great feel for things and so I was able to trust him and never felt I had to micromanage anything. The work staff was timely, professional, hard-working, and competent. The only downside, if I had any, was that I had some issues with the sub-contractor they referred who did my concrete work. That didn't go well. Devonshire however was not responsible for that sub contract work. It was only a referral. Also, it appears their pricing may have gone up some since I worked with them, but that wouldn't stop me from using them again. Good value overall.
Description of Work: Full landscape installation: Rockery rebuild, flagstone patio and pathway installation, soil amendment and leveling, planting, sleeving, irrigation and drainage, additional sleeving for future lighting, accent rocks, custom BBQ pad off side deck, pavers along street, materials acquisition and delivery, property clean up, consultation and modifications to existing design/plans. Design provided by another contractor. Decks also done by another group.

I want to say my last service was two to three years ago –I think it was in the summer. It was a brick paver patio that they had to take up and reset because there were some sink holes in it. They are efficient and clean up well when they were finished. They did really a good job and the price was reasonable. I know a friend of mine around the corner he was using them for like weekly lawn but they don’t do it anymore in the east side. For any kind of project I would.
Description of Work: Devonshire Landscapes Inc came and reset my brick paver patio.
Will was pleasant to work with and had good ideas for our project. He was reasonably priced and kept to the budget we had agreed, subject to changes we requested. His workers were all very friendly and professional. At the start of the project the work went very quickly and efficiently. Towards the end of the project the pace slowed down quite a bit as workers were pulled to other projects. I spoke to Will about his and he was responsive in getting our project finished. All in all they did an excellent job and we where very happy with the result. We would definitely use Will and Devonshire Landscaping again.
Description of Work: Extensive landscaping of backyard. Retaining wall and leveling for lawn and trampoline area. Rebuilding steps on side of house leading to backyard. After removal of two old trees from my front yard, the small yard was a disaster zone and an embarrassment to me. I determined to remove the grass and moss and have just plants and bark. I had previously spoken to another landscape co. The communication with them was so frustrating that after two weeks I turned to Devonshire. Part of the problem was that my job was small (no less important to me) and the landscapers were all in the midst of end of summer projects. I was visited by Dan V. and we discussed what I wanted. He was helpful and personable and promised an estimate within a few days. I felt it was a little high but after they did the work I was so pleased and felt it was worth every penny. I can't say enough good things about the crew, Steve and Abel. They arrived at 8:00 a.m. on the terrible stormy day of Sept. 30 and worked as if the sun were shining all day. They were respectful and willing to listen to my concerns and suggestions. For the most part I left them alone as they obviously knew what they were doing. They went the extra mile with placing a bird bath and stepping stones in the yard for me. I also hadn't expected the care and attention they gave to the small planting area on the opposite side of the yard. They took away all debris, including old bricks (they asked first if I wanted to keep them) and a broken fence board. They left the area clean and took obvious pride in their work. They were here for two days, worked hard and got the job done.
Description of Work: Removed grass, old leaves and bark from planting beds, old shrubs and roots. Pruned large camellia, laid weed proofing, added amended soil to planting beds, planted owner-provided plants and spread bark over all. Weeded existing beds and added bark to that area. Also installed a drainage pipe.

The first visit just got the front and back yards mowed with 2 men working for just over 30 minutes. The second visit got the back yard mowed and the weeds pulled again with 2 men actually working for 20 minutes. They were to arrive for my third service between 2 and 4 pm but did not do so and there was no call to advise me that they were running late. I called Maintenance Manager Dan to advise the crew had not arrived. He appeared to be unaware that they were running late. He added that he had thought they could accomodate a 2 hour window to arrive for service but he felt they could not do so reliably. I therefore cancelled with them.

I apologize for the inconvenience. I have spoken to Dan about communicating with customers about expectations. I do feel that we have a good system in place to keep our ~200 accounts on schedule, and 2 hour window should be within reason the majority of the time. Things do happen, but Dan should have made it a point to contact this client if our crew was running late.

I chose Devonshire Lanscapes, Inc. based on their rating on Angie's list, their competitive bid, and because I got the impression that I could communicate well with them. They did major landscaping for me: built retaining walls, took out an old cement driveway, widened and rebuilt it with pavers and new retaining walls, put in a new drain, built new steps, extended a patio with new pavers, and built a new portion of fence to match exactly an older fence. They completed all that work while waiting for the city to approve a permit to build a large complicated retaining wall on another side of my property. Rick and his crew were meticulous, installed all the important drainage for the walls, and consulted me when questions arose. I am extremely pleased with the results and it was a pleasure to work with Doug, Will, and Rick and his excellent crew. The city permit office took all summer and autumn to finally approve the permit for the other side, after requiring all kinds of surveys, drawings, etc. Through all that hassle Doug and Will from Devonshire kept their patience, jumped through all the hoops the city required, and apologized to me for the delays even though it was not their fault. Work commenced on the big retaining walls a couple weeks before Christmas and was completed by January 2013. Rick and his crew, without me even asking, cleaned up their entire work site so it would look neat and clean during their short break for Christmas. They did quality work on every part of the project. The high retaining walls look beautiful, the driveway and patio pavers look great, the fence they built is perfect, they moved two good sized trees and replanted them, built garden boxes, built 3 sets of stairs, there's nothing they can't do and they do it all very well. And I'm happy to report that they were very pleasant and easy to work with. A+ Highly recommended!

We hired Devonshire because the company received such good comments on Angie's List. The company that I had used before had given me a quote of $6000 to perform the work that I wanted and, although they did very good work, I thought that they were trying to take advantage of us with those prices. I met with Will and specifically walked him through our property and explained that I wanted a profusion of color and plants in the yard and that I did NOT want any plants that were yellow in color. He provided me with an initial estimate of $900 -I was very surprised at the low cost and told him that I did not believe that price would provide enough plants for the large area and all of the pots that needed to be planted, given that I wanted a profusion of color. WIll assured me that he understood. The team showed up without Will to do the planting, and they obviously had no landscaping "plan" -- the plants were haphazard and very small for my large area. In addition, despite my explicit instructions, there were a very large number of YELLOW plants. I called Will and he apologized but did not offer any explanation. He and his crew came out a few days later to "fix" the problem -- although they removed the yellow plants, there still was no design to what they planted -- tall plants were placed haphazardly next to small plants. They re-planted a tree in a pot in an area in front of our garage that got afternoon sun that was very hot -- the tree died with 10 days after it was replanted. I would have expected that they would have known better. My nanny and I were required to go to our local nursery and buy $150 dollars worth of plants to fill in the areas that they considered "finished." Overall, I was extremely disappointed at the service and the product. I will never use this company again. In retrospect, I am very sorry that I did not go with my original landscaper.

I am sorry to hear that Mrs. M was unhappy with our work. This work was done in June of 12', which explains her mistaking myself (Will Anstey, owner) for Dan, our maintenance manager with whom she worked. I still accept ultimate responsibility for the unsatisfied customer. I understand that she expected more than what she received, and that there were some miss-understandings. After discussing this with Dan, it is apparent that he did not do a good enough job of communicating and understanding what the client wanted. He typically does smaller scale plantings (i.e. to add some curb appeal for a house going on the market) where a design for $500-$800 is often cost prohibitive. After reading the comments by Mrs. M, it is apparent that she was looking for much more. I am sure that we could have had a design done and installed a planting plan that she would have been happy with if we had a better understanding of her overall goals and budget. Dan also delegated the initial plant selection to an employee who purchased the wrong plants. He did go back and replace the plants that the client did not like. He said that she stated she was happy at that point. I have talked to Dan about doing a better job of asking the client questions to understand their goals and budgets, and referring jobs to our installation division when required.

The job went very well. Don't leave any windows or doors open during the work of cutting with the concrete saw. Even tho the saw used water there was still a lot of dust. Other thing we regret was that we did this job so late in the season because it started raining shortly after the job was finished. Did get a few sunny days to try it out. We are very happy!! Pleased with the excellent workmanship.
Description of Work: First job was to cut a CMU block wall that I had started at a 2% grade away from the house and then put rebar and concrete in to reinforce the wall. Then grade compact and put down a compacted gravel base before installing three sizes of pavers in a random pattern for the patio. At the same time removing the sidewalk and installing more pavers for the walkway. The job took 4 1/2 days, first day was earlier in the month because they had some time open to start work on the CMU wall, then the rest was started on the above date. Will had to return to apply a special sand with hardeners because the supplier had run out. Considering the scope of the job I thought it was very quick.

Overall, after some converstaions with Devonshire it went ok. the work was not initially performed to my expectation. Leaf removal was only partially performed, after several calls and paying more for the fact that it would take additional man hours it was. Weeding is not performed as it says they do or at least I cannot tell. They will do extra work outside of the monthly contract and this was done well. Purning: I would not trust them to prune as they do not send the most qualified plant people out for these types of jobs.
Description of Work: Services included raking, mowing, leaf removal, pruning. I initially hired the firm for assistance with various help in my large and hilly backyard. A walk though was performed by their lead staff after which some work was performed such as leaf removal. I signed up for a monthly maintenance contract for mowing, edging, weeding and clean up of about two 45 minute timed visits.

The bid was quick and similar to the amount I was charged the previous year. I sent a list of all the items to be done, including removal of a small Camelia in the front yard. My renters informed me that the workers were unable to remove the Camelia stump and cut it to the ground, which sounded fine to me. They also mentioned that one of the hedges that was to be trimmed was not completed and that the front exterior lights coming up the front steps no longer worked. I emailed the company to report the two issues and was advised not to call an electrician; they said they would send someone out to fix the lights. I advised that they ensure my renters were home to turn off the power so that the repair could be done safely. I was advised that this is not necessary for low voltage lights such as those on the stairs. I informed them I didn't know the voltage of the wiring in question. The workers said they would be out on two consecutive days but weren't able to make it. Finally on the third day, I emailed the company that for safety reasons, I needed to call an electrician. The repair was done and I sent the invoice to Devonshire. I then received a call from the office indicating they didn't think that they should have to pay for the repair (they said that it wasn't their fault that the wire was where it was). Additionally, I was told that my wiring was not up-to-code and that they weren't going to call an attorney, but they didn't think they should pay for the repair. They then asked that I pay half. The landscape office had gone by and spoken with my renter before calling me and also called the electrician who made the repair. I also called the electrician who said that the voltage was fine (up-to-code) and that the Cameila roots had grown through the wires and this made it difficult to remove the small stump and led to the slicing in two places of the wire. He also said that the depth of the wires could have be deeper. I wondered if the wires were pulled up during the attempt to remove the stump. I also found out that the landscapers could have had the front mapped (free of charge) for any pipes or other buried systems prior to digging. Given the tone of the communication with the office and their request that I pay half, I relented and paid for half of the electrical repair as I just didn't want to deal with them anymore. I also had to email the office again to determine that they had gone back out to complete the hedge trim that had not been completed, which they had.
Description of Work: I used this company last year for clean up of the yard and preparation for Spring including cutting back perennials, trimming back neighbors hedges back from the property line, weeding, mulching and mowing the lawn.

This was an unfortunate situation, and i do not fault the home owner for not completely understanding the complexity of the situation, building codes, utilty locating services, etc. I am frustrated by the electrical contractor that overcharged for the repair, and gave her mis-information. I thought that offering to split the bill was a fair solution for everyone, and thought i maintained professional integrity throughout. The electrical contractor was not interested in even offering to dis-count his over-charged bill. I understand that from the home owners point of view; her outside lights worked when our crew showed up to do the work, and then did not work after we left. I had assumed (in-correctly) that the lights were low-voltage (12V), as we did not do any digging, and any 120 Volt wire should be buried 24 inches below ground as per the National Electrical Code; - "NEC 300-5 Generally, cables approved for direct burial shall have a minimum cover of 24 inches. When wiring is installed at dwellings in approved non-metallic raceways, the minimum cover can be reduced to 18 inches." This was not the case at the home owners property. The 120 Volt wire was only about 2 inches below the garden mulch around the Camellia stump that she asked us to dig out. While trying to dig out the stump, our crew un-knowingly damaged the wire. I am glad no-one was hurt. The home owners does not seem to understand that she could be held liable for personall injury that results from un-safe conditions at her property. Being this is a rental property, i would think it would be more of a concern. I even sent her a quote from my legal advisor to help her understand her responsibilty in the matter. I assume the electrical contractor told her that everything ws "up to code" to avoid his responsibility of not repairing the damaged wire legally. I understand that doing the job the right way would have been more coslty, but it also would have prevented the owner from potential future liability, and more importantly prevented personal injury and/or electricution! Seattle Electrical code; "WAC - 80.13 Violations and Penalties. (A) Violations. It shall be a violation of this Code for any person, firm or corporation to: (1) erect, construct, enlarge, repair, move, improve, remove, convert or demolish, equip, occupy, or maintain any building or structure in the City, contrary to or in violation of any of the provisions of this Code;" "WAC - 80.12 Unsafe Conditions or Code Violations. (A) Unsafe Conditions or Code Violations. The authority having jurisdiction may inspect any new or existing electrical installation or equipment, and if the installation or equipment is found to be maintained or used in an unsafe condition or found to be in violation of this Code, the authority having jurisdiction is authorized to serve upon the owner or user a notice or order requiring correction. Any person served such notice who fails to comply with the order therein shall be in violation of this ordinance and subject to the penalties provided in this Code." The "free mapping" that i assume the electrical told the home owner about would NOT have located the wire that runs to the lights. They do not walk the entire property searching for anything anyone has buried in the ground. They mark the Utilities from the street to the meter. We do plenty of large jobs where we use this service before ripping out an entire yard, or digging more than 1 foot deep. The job we did for this client was a simply "yard clean-up". I assume this was another attempt of the electrical contractor trying to avoid responsiblity. I do not know if anyone has read this entire thing, but Devonshire Landscape will continue to provide Angie's List members with the quality service that has lead us to 85% "A" reports, and no "D" or "F" reports. Hopefully this member will re-consider the rating given to us, after fully understanding the situation. Hopefully the electrical contractor is not on Angie's List, and did NOT receive a good rating for their part in this.

I think I found them on Angie’s List. They responded to my phone call, and they came when they said they would. The people doing the work have been nice to work with, and they have good ideas. They clean up after themselves.
Description of Work: I use Devonshire Landscapes. They’re currently working on a project for me. They are also doing some outdoor electrical stuff for me.
