We couldn't have been happier with our experience. Rich responded with a job quote promptly and then graciously managed to fit us into his schedule quickly, as we were about to put our house on the market. Rich was prompt, kept us informed of his schedule and timeline, and was careful and neat while working in our home. The work was meticulously done and we especially appreciated the extra effort that he made to obtain the correct color accessories and grout. Not only did Rich successfully remove our custom powder room sink, he even took the time to remove the old caulk so that it will be ready to be installed in our new home!
Description of Work: We hired Rich to remove and replace the ceramic tile-surround in a shower, remove the old vinyl from the floor and install porcelain tile and update the plumbing. We also contracted with him to remove, and preserve, a custom-made sink in another bathroom, repair the drywall and install a new countertop, sink and backsplash.

Rich was recommended to us by a neighbor. Rich was very responsive in responding to our inquiry. He was professional and listened well. He shared ideas and worked with the representative at Statements (GREAT ASSISTANCE there too) on finalizing the material order. Rich has a great manner about him. He has a lot of humility, however, he is very good in his approach and quality. His helper Matt was great. You could tell both made sure all the details were considered. The job was about a week long. Rich had a key and kept everything clean and all in place at the end of his work day. We will have Rich back when we do our fireplace and bathroom tiling.
Description of Work: Demo old and install new ceramic tile backsplash in kitchen - about 40 square feet, supplied by homeowner.

Rich Shaffer was recommended to my wife and I by another contractor, Brad from BA Construction, when we talked with him about doing some work for us. We originally hired Brad to work on a bathroom remodel for us, but the current job he was working on before ours got larger and b/c we were on a tight time budget Bard pointed us towards Shaffer who was available at the time. It all looks great and we would definitely recommend him to anyone. He is very detail oriented, and wouldn't stop working until everything was done perfectly, plus reasonable rates and quality work can't be beat. He is a super nice guy, likes dogs too and didn't mind them being around him while he was working.
Description of Work: We had a small, 3/4 bathroom done by Shaffer. He demoed the room, taking out the existing shower pan, tile shower walls, tile floor, sink, and toliet. Replacing them with a new tile floor, sink and vanity, custom river rock shower floor and subway tile walls, with a frameless glass door.

After our washing machine mal-functioned and flooded the laundry and hallway, we had to replace the flooring. We decided on ceramic tile down the hall, into the laundry room, and the bathroom. Rich Schaffer bid the job, and while his bid was a bit more expensive than I was expecting, I had seen some of his previous work, and knew he would do a quality job. I prepared the work area for Rich by removing everything and making sure he had clear access through the garage to the work area. Rich started by hanging a barrier at the end of the hall to prevent dust from spreading into the rest of the house. The first two days were spent preparing the area, removing the baseboards, staples from the sub floor where the carpet pad was fastened in place, linoleum and backing from the laundry room, and repairing rot in the bathroom by the toilet. The electrician Rich brought in came in on the third day and did a neat job of bringing electrical from the panel to the thermostat for the radiant heat. Everything was fastened properly as it was run in the crawl space and up into the wall box. He returned at the end of the job to power up the circuit and sign off on the final electrical work. Rich spent the third day laying the radiant floor heat wires and sensors, and covering it with a base of quick-set. The fourth and fifth days were used to lay the tile. Rich is meticulous, ensuring that each tile is precisely level with the adjoining tiles, and that the spacing is precise. He makes detailed cuts on the edges to make sure the tile wraps consistently around all corners, doorways, heat vents, etc. On the sixth day, Rich installed the epoxy based grout. This sealed the cracks, and combined with the ceramic tile, it ensured that the tile was pretty-much impervious to liquids and stains. On the seventh day, Rich returned to install the trim boards he had removed. A few of these didn't survive the removal, so I picked up replacements at the local hardware store, and Rich did a good job of cutting everything to fit and replacing them. All I was left to do was paint the trim and put everything back in the laundry. Of course, with everything out, it was a perfect opportunity to paint all three spaces, so I just painted everything. I did find out later that the radiant head added about 1/4 inch to the height of the floor. This made it so the bathroom door had no space to open over a floor mat. I took it off and trimmed it to provide more space. Overall, me and my wife are very happy with the work Rich did. It is nice to have comfortable feet when walking on the tile during the winter. We are saving so he can come back and do the same thing in the kitchen.
Description of Work: Removal of old flooring in laundry, bathroom, and hallway. Repair of water damaged sub-floor. Installation of 240V electric circuit (sub-contracted) for radiant heat, installation of radiant floor heating in hall and bathroom, installation of ceramic tile in all three locations, re-installation of all trim removed for installation.

The installation was a 3 stage process. First the wall needed to be prepped in order to properly retain the marble panels. This involved removing the old dry wall and replacing it with cement backer board to ensure it was level, plum and that the marble would adhere properly. Then Rich measured each section and created templates used in fabricating the marble panels. Stage 2 involved selecting the marble and fabricating the various panels and determining placement and how the grain would flow when installed. Rich personally helped me select the marble, he had each slab pulled out of it's stack and examined, ensuring quality and price. Rich's expert advice helped me pick the perfect marble - each slab was part of the same block originally cut in Italy. Stage 3 involved the installation of the marble on the wall. The marble was incredibly heavy and required 3 people to put into place. Rich's planning and prep work ensured that the marble panels were plum, level and the seams were perfect. Rich did a fantastic job, he is quite the artisan and a meticulous craftsman - his prices are fair and worth every penny - I don't think you can find anyone better at what he does in the Pacific Northwest. I plan to hire him to fabricate and install stone countertops/island in my kitchen.
Description of Work: Fabricated and Installed a 12 x 8 foot marble fireplace surround as part of a remodel of my living room.
