Joel was great. We contacted him on July 3, he arrived on site on the 7th and emailed us a Proposal on the 11th. We asked that the work be completed by August 4. This was not a problem for him and proposed the week of July 20. Because that turned out to be a bad week for us, we were prepared to wait until the last week in July. So it was a terrific surprise when he said he would arrive on July 14. Once work began that morning, all went smoothly. During the time it took to complete the job, approximately five hours, he and his helper worked quickly, efficiently, and thoroughly while paying careful attention to not harm the yews boarding one side of the site. A rather tight urban site. We were also grateful that he did not create a level site as we had requested. He instead slightly sloped the ground away from the house in order to protect it from any rain water. Sounds obvious now, but in discussing the excavation process with friends and others, none mentioned this critical detail. All in all, it was great working with Joel. His professionalism, knowledge, and extremely pleasant nature would have us recommend him HIGHLY to anyone.
Description of Work: Excavated dirt and concrete pieces between house and row of yews along paved alley, sloping dirt away from house. Cut stand pipe from decommissioned oil tank. Loaded up dirt, concrete, and pipe and hauled all to dump site. (Two trips.)

Joel returned my call for assistance the same day; a few days later he came by to look at the yard. Joel was pleasant, professional, and knowledgeable. He provided us a couple of options with estimates, and was very willing to work on either option we chose. I was impressed how quickly and efficiently he worked. He filled the hole in with some great soil, raked, stamped, and returned the plants to the soil. Joel made that uneven space look wonderful, and provided information on how to keep the growing grass healthy. For a few days afterwards, I would take my morning coffee in the yard to look at the reclaimed space.
Description of Work: Brought in topsoil to fill a large depression (7ft across; 2 ft deep in some places) in the backyard. Removed plants from the area, filled with topsoil; replanted the plants we wanted to keep; graded out the soil for lawn; and took away the plants we did not want.

Joel was available to view on day I contacted and provided estimate and available to do job within a couple days. He arrived next day, completed the job in a very timely manner, and hauled away all the debris. He was very professional and job was well within our budget. Excellent customer service and quality. Definitely will call him again if needs arise and highly recommend to others.

Joel was easy to work with and had a more competitive bid than another party who competed for the job. Job was setup and completed quickly as I needed to comply with state insurance (PLIA) timelines in the event any soil was contaminated (which it was not).

Very well. Joel is earnest and responsive. He was tough to get lined up, but once I was in the cue, it was all business, and his price was very reasonable.
Description of Work: This was a very difficult job, involving removal of a concrete wall that was leaning towards a neighbor's house. Joel excavated earth behind the wall, coordinated with a concrete cutter, and removed the cut apart wall. It was a tough job to know the best way to handle the delicate job and after we created a plan he executed it perfectly.

Response from Martin Excavating And Construction
[member name removed] had a concrete wall that was leaning towards the neighbors house, it was taller than the space between the wall and house. We were concerned about the wall hitting the neighbors house if not removed carefully. This job was done in a number of steps to keep all parties and property safe. In the process we found the water service coming into the house and had to re-route the line to maintain coverage and to protect the line from future damage. [member name removed] and all the neighbors were understanding and easy to work with during the whole project.

Joel did a great job, very fast and extremely competent. After 3 days I had a whole new backyard and improvements to the side and front yard, as well as drainage fixes. I would hire Joel again and refer him in an instant. For the amount of work performed, hauling, dump fees and material required it was a good deal compared to other bids.

Joel was on time, on budget and knowledgable about this project and more. We would hire him again. In fact, we probably will do just that when it's time to pour a new patio!
Description of Work: Removed an old deck and the even older patio underneath. Then leveled the yard and hauled out excess dirt. Plus built a retaining wall out of the large stones left over from the excavation. When my sons asked Joel to pull some of the large rocks out of his truck and make a "wall" for them. He smiled and happily spent an extra time and care to make them a low "wall" for hide and go seek and nerf battles. Everyone in our family is happy with Martin Excavating.

This guy was amazing. We took 5-6 bids; he was way cheaper than all the other bids. He had guaranteed the best service, and he came through. We can't even tell that he was here. He carefully pulled all the bark off to the side on to a tarp, dug down, replaced everything and smoothed it out. I am so impressed. They were punctual and on time. They said that they would make the yard look like they were never there except for a little tiny cleanup cap, and they did it. They cleaned up everything after themselves; we would have never known that they were there. They dug out probably six feet of dirt, three feet wide and several feet deep, and we can't tell.

The job went just as stated. No problems or surprises. Joel diligently and carefully did the job.
Description of Work: Needed a hole dug that I would fill with rocks (French Drain) for drainage purposes. Joel called the proper people to come out and check for active lines below the area...which all concurred with his educated guess (gas, electric, etc). He was able to dig around the gas line and do the job on time, on budget and cleaned up everything.

Everything went better than expected. Joel is as professional as they get, and he works hard. His price was good too. Our homesite was a difficult one. Situated on a hillside, with lots of drainage issues to deal with, Joel took it on with no problems. He had good ideas where we weren't sure what to do, but he also listened closely. We had to handle city code / environmental / erosion issues, and came out of it looking great. The finish of the land grade left us with little to do besides start planting. The look of the place is completely different with the rockeries and improvements. After being a property owner for over 22 years, and plenty of excavating work done in the past, my first pick for future work is going to Martin Excavating.
Description of Work: Complete landscape prep on a 13000 sq ft lot with home. We had near three hundred feet of rockeries installed. Challenging hillside and within city of Bellevue. Also repaired downspout drains, repaired manhole access and installed catch basins.

Joel was polite and easy to talk to on the phone. He arranged to come out that day to give an estimate. I felt comfortable he knew what I was talking about. He took detailed notes and provided a professional bid by the time promised. The only problem was the work was going to cost a lot more than I expected. To be fair, I had no idea what this would cost. If the price would have worked out, I would have hired Joel. If I have excavation needs in the future, I would contact him again.

I called Martin for an estimate, and the company owner, Joel Martin, came out to look at the conditions and give me an estimate. He was very knowledgeable and resourceful, willing to do some research into tank types, and he was conscientious about not making a huge mess in my yard. The project took 3 days. I would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: Martin Excavating installed a new underground water storage tank (plastic). They also installed a pump and connected the power to the pump and the discharge pipe from the tank. The excavating was done in a lot of rain, and they brought a sump pump to dewater the hole while they were installing the new tank. They purchased the tank and brought it and a small backhoe to dig and backfill the hole.

He is very professional and very good. He was very tolerant of me because I can be very crabby when I am under stress. He and one other crewperson worked very, very hard and got done very, very quickly. He was great. The price was fair but it was not the lowest bid.
Description of Work: I used Martin Excavating to excavate the foundation for a guesthouse that I am having built. They also put in all the drainage pipes and they were able to tie the gutters into the storm drain, which was very helpful.
