I was very surprised to see this report of only an average rating. When we completed our work and even during the project, I never got any indication this client was not delighted with any part of our service. So if this client was harboring any dissatisfaction, he kept it to himself. Hard to fix a problem I don't know I have. But I was concerned about the client's satisfaction level and experience so I immediately wrote an email, asking to meet and discuss why he felt our company earned only a "C" rating and what we could do to leave him with a more favorable opinion. I waited 5 days. I got no response. After the 5 day waiting period, I took the time to personally visit this client in the hopes of uncovering why we suddenly were having an issue. He was home and did politely meet with me. However, he did not want to engage in much conversation saying, "I am a tough grader." He also told me he thought all the "extra" work they asked us to do should have been included and he seemed agitated we left behind any remaining paint, which he paid for and owns. But even upon telling me these unreasonable comments, I offered to do what I could to make him happy. He only said, "We are done." I enjoyed working with this couple during the project and doing a complete repaint of their entire interior. On my end, the colors were beautiful, the quality was high end and the effort to do it all was top shelf. Unreasonable expectations or the refusal to discuss concerns will always lead to dissatisfaction on both sides. But either way, I did not deserve a grade of "C" just because a client is upset they did not get extra stuff for free. If I were grading this client, I would have to give him an F for failing to communicate, failing to set realistic expectations, failing to allow us a chance to compromise a win-win solution, failing to acknowledge my desire to meet after the fact. He is pleasant enough, but his passive-aggressive behavior is his chosen personality and the people who are hired by him will always be challenged to read his mind before he acts out and will not be able to ever make him completely happy. These clients exist and a service provider such as me can only do our best and just be forced to live with the outcome. And by the way, I graded on a curve. :)

I haven?t worked with a designer before my experience with Away with White and wouldn?t have, except for an Amazon Local coupon for a "Comprehensive Color Consultation," which was one hour of color consulting and $100.00 worth of painting time. I hadn?t planned to ask Ms. Amos to do painting, and so I have no opinion on her painting abilities. I had only planned for the one hour, but ended up paying for two more hours, at full price. After working with Cindy Amos I can say her color sense is good, and she is experienced and well-organized. Before we met, Ms. Amos asked about my goals and expectations. We met for three hours while I pointed out things I liked (and didn't like) in her portfolio of color plans, identified the furniture I was keeping, what I had done to the house, what I liked, and so on. While we discussed those things, she worked her way through the house with color chips considering palettes. Eventually she arrived at a palette I generally like. Up to this point, the experience was good, and I was planning to use Away with White for more work in the future. Unfortunately, Ms. Amos became argumentative and angry when I didn't accept her bid for exterior painting. She knew I'd already decided to use another contractor when she asked me to let her bid, even though that's not what I contacted her about. When I did select the other contractor, Ms. Amos became defensive, going so far as to imply insults about the other contractor (I didn't tell her who that is). Privately, I explained to her what the experience was like from my point of view as a customer, but she was unable to accept, much less discuss, any criticism. She was unwilling to accept that someone might prefer another company over hers. I told Ms. Amos that I liked her design sense and hoped to use more of that skill in the future with the interior. She took umbrage at even that implying it was unfair of me to propose it. She wrote ?I normally do not do any consulting that I do not execute.? This assumed that I wasn?t going to ask her to execute the design--I hadn't even gotten that far. In any case, her brochure and website (as of this writing) do not, in my opinion, make this clear. The Away with White website says ?Whether you are looking for color consulting, faux finishes or full service painting, Away with White can help you design and execute your interior or exterior color and paint needs.? The company?s brochure says ?regardless of the type of service you need, we will harmonize with the execution phase with your time and budget considerations.? This says to me that design is a separate service, as are painting and faux finishes. When I mentioned this to Ms. Amos, she disagreed and made it plain she wasn't going to consider my feedback. I don't care how Ms. Amos structures her business, although it affects whether I would use her. The way Ms. Amos responds to conflict is important since conflict is inevitable in remodeling or refinishing projects. I would find it hard to work with a contractor who is takes things personally. I believe it's more than just a conflict of personalities--I like Ms. Amos, actually--but it seems to be a pattern given the way she reacted to the negative Angie's List report. There were things I liked about working with Ms. Amos, as follows: - She has a bold, but not outlandish, color sense, which is helpful for clients wanting that. However, she also seems to be capable with a variety of different types of color schemes. - Ms. Amos is organized and experienced. The pre-interview gave her an idea of what I was looking for beforehand. Ms. Amos effectively uses her portfolio of color plans, divided into groups, to learn about her clients. I didn't felt rushed, nor did I feel like we wasted time during the consultation. - She is thorough. The three hour appointment was exhaustive. - Ms. Amos met with me when my house was in an uproar because of some work being done on the house. She was able to see past the disarray. These are qualities a good designer should have. Things potential clients might want to consider when deciding to use Away with White: - Ms. Amos seems to only, or prefers to only, consult on design for projects for which she is doing the work. A project like a faux finish fireplace might work for this arrangement. For larger, more complex projects, I would separate design from execution so that I can get competitive bids and stagger the work. Maybe all designers work this way, though. - Her promotional materials mention free consultations, but I am not sure she offers them, so clients might want to check that. - Ms. Amos subcontracts exterior painting. That will probably, and understandably, make her prices higher than if one contracts directly with a painting company. However, using her as a contractor for painting can be beneficial, too, if she is the contractor for several aspects of a project. - She reacted defensively and aggressively to even slight criticisms and comparisons to another company as if I attacked her. This makes raising any issue difficult. She was argumentative about everything that came up between us that she didn?t agree with. She was dismissive when I reported there were mistakes on the final color plan that she sent me. Communication may be more difficult than need be if a project has complications. - Ms. Amos freely voices contemptuous opinions of companies and people, needlessly so.
Description of Work: Cindy Amos came to my house and interviewed me to find out my taste and goals. My goal was to find an exterior house color for painting that will be done this summer, and to have a color plan for the interior which I will be doing next year. Through that process she developed a plan of colors for the walls, ceilings, mill-work, and exterior trim and accent.

I was sorry to learn that I earned only a grade of "C" from this client, however, in reading her comments, I would like to give my own impressions and reactions so potential new clients will have a complete and accurate picture. I have been in business for over 10 years with scores of happy and satisfied clients who may not have an interest in posting reviews to sites like this one, so this site can be a little misleading regarding client satisfaction levels. Nancy came to me by way of an Amazon Local Daily Deal, which I have never done before. In order to do a deal with these kinds of companies, a business owner has to agree to offer services with at least a 50% discount, then split that amount with the vendor. In short, business owners make no money on "deals," but run them in the hopes and expectations of getting more work. I am not sure voucher buyers know or understand that. I informed Member that I do not normally do consulting that I do not execute. That is correct. I am a full service color and paint company. I am not purely a consultant. However the "deal" structure set by Amazon might have given that impression, which is why I clarify my services up front. Member did not pay the full rate for the additional time. I normally combine the consulting rates with the job but made this pricing exception on behalf of Amazon. So perhaps Member was confused from the start. But we did have an enjoyable and productive 3 hours and we did arrive at a plan for a partial interior and exterior. I did not ask to provide a price quote for additional work. I did ask if Member would like me to offer a price because her deal included money to spend on painting. I was trying to give her the full benefit of what she purchased. I provided a thorough proposal of what her house would require and my price was competitive with what she expected. However, Member thought she could hire someone else to paint and keep me at the ready for color adjustments and additional consulting work. This is when I explained again that I do not offer consulting as a stand alone service. Again, I think Member took this personally because she was quoted several times as saying she thought I "wrote her off." All my communications with Member were professional and amicable. At no time was I angry or defensive. I will however, clarify misunderstandings if necessary so clients can make an informed decision. But I told Member I was fine with her using another contractor in this case because the house needed so much work and margins were very slim to make it even work. At all times, I was polite and professional. And in a final note, my completed color plan was correct. I think Member could not accurately remember some of the details of our visit. I keep extremely accurate notes and assembled a plan that was complete, accurate and beautiful for this client. I am sorry if there was a misunderstanding or miscommunication. I take pride in the creative and pragmatic work I do and am sorry to learn I somehow did not provide a delightful experience, as I have countless times with so many others. In business, sometimes there is more going on than anyone knows. I can only address what I do know to be fact. The rest is only speculation.

Cindy is a truly gifted color consultant and faux painter. The project we did was big, and she did an amazing job of helping me pick out colors and color combinations for 3 bedrooms, 2 hallways, living room, dining room and kitchen. My house looks amazing! She contracted with a painter, who did a good job as well, and was very personable. She is particularly skillful at fireplace brick work. The job she did is beyond what I imagined! My only problems I had with her were when I wanted to change the contract the day after signing it. When Cindy gave me the estimate for the job, she knew my overall budget. She did not include the tax in the estimate, and I did not ask if tax was included. We did this over the phone and by email, so there was no formal written estimate. With tax, the job became almost $1000 more expensive, so I had to remove one room from the painting contract. My budget was firm, and I was trying to be responsible. I let her know within 24 hours of signing the contract, and though I knew she wasn't pleased, I didn't think it would be a problem. Our communication after that became, well, bizarre. At one point she accused me of not wanting to pay taxes.....which was absurd. Essentially, we got into a he says/she says email exchange that went nowhere. It ended when I let Cindy have the last word. At the end of the project, the hourly charges by the painter were not documented in any way. He had two very nice men working with him, but when he was not on the job, they worked pretty slowly. I have a feeling I was charged for their overall hours....but have no way to prove it. I also was charged for "extra materials". When I questioned the charge, she promised to send me receipts. I haven't received them yet....but it's only been a week since the job ended. If you want an excellent looking product, Cindy is definitely a person to look into. My advice is be careful about the contract you sign, and be very precise in negotiating around issues of pricing. Overall, I can't say the extra $1000 I ended up paying wasn't "worth it", because the house looks so great. But I felt a little "taken".
Description of Work: Cindy consulted with me on colors for 3 bedrooms, 2 hallways, living room, dining room, and kitchen. She then contracted with me to paint the living room, dining room, and kitchen. I had to cancel one of the bedrooms in the contract due to financial concerns. (see below). After the painting was completed (it took about a week), Cindy came in for 3 days and worked on faux painting my dining room walls, and painting the bricks by the living room wood stove. The work she did was fantastic and my house looks great!

I am very happy to read that this client was very happy with our work and felt that she got more than she paid for, which causes me confusion to read the negative comments. When a company quotes prices, whether that company is a service business or selling a product, it is customary to quote the work, not the sales tax unless it is specifically requested. It is assumed, or so I thought, that sales tax would be charged. I professional contractor will always have a written contract and collect sales tax. That is the law. I think the issue here was that this client had been used to using unlicensed contracts, who typically do not charge sales tax because they are collecting cash "off the books." There is a great danger in entering into a transaction of this kind for both the buyer and the contractor. In the end, it was my impression that this particular client did not expect to pay taxes. In addition, it is my company policy to complete all work included in the contract and any additional work will be billed on an hourly basis. All such work is approved prior to completion and billing, so I am unclear why this client felt "taken," when she had full control over what work was being done and approved same. In any event, I try to always give my clients more than they expect and I do believe on that issue I was very successful. I will consider the suggestions made by this client but I would also add as a suggestion to consumers....please read what you sign and be clear about your obligations as part of a signed contract. And if you have doubts or questions, raise them prior to signing a contract. After a contract is signed is binds both parties, which is the intent behind it.

She did not complete the project ?Due to Weather? (her words), telling us it would be better to do the master bedroom windows in the summer when the window casings would have fully dried out. She had not contacted us at any time after December when the weather had warmed up. When we contacted her in the summer to come back and complete the project, she stated that we would need a new contract. The statement on her final December invoice read "Temporary hold on master bedroom windows Due to the weather - Hold on balance $200." We held the $200 balance. She stated that this ? the ?Temporary hold?,? -- constituted an amendment of the contract, concluding that agreement, and that we would have to enter into a new contract with her for the windows for $370. The total project was for $9887.85, including the windows which she valued at $200. We felt that we were entitled to have the project completed from its ?Temporary hold?? status for the original contract price of $200 that was held by us ??on balance,? per her agreement as set forth in her final December invoice. She insisted that we needed a new contract, asserting that her ?price guarantees are offered for 30 days, not 9 months.? We declined to enter into a new contract and pay the additional money. She did not do the windows. If you make any modifications, or changes, to the agreement with her, you should make sure that you understand what the effect of those changes are and have that understanding reduced to writing.

Response from Away with White
I am the owner of Away with White. If you have taken the time to read the above report, you may want to continue to read this response in order to fully understand the part of this report that is conveniently missing. I was hired by this client to perform the services of color consulting and painting. The job was designed, planned and executed during the month of November 2009. Everything went according to plan, the job was completed on time, as promised, with no issues. We were paid on time and given a glorious testimonial feedback report with very high marks on all counts. However, this client insisted on having us paint a few windows in a master bedroom which required opening the windows to do the interior jams. November's temperatures are too cold to perform this type of work where the paint job would be exposed to the elements just like an exterior. Typically, if a client wants to change a contract or postpone some work, my company policy is to fulfill the rest of the contract, collect the balance in full and retain the unused portion as a credit to be used at another time. This client did not want to abide by my contract and insisted that they get a refund if we refused to paint the windows. My response was that, as a responsible contractor, I could only advise that painting exterior work in November would void any product warranty from the manufacturer and waiting for temperatures to rise above 50 degrees, per the paint manufacturers warranty. We could do the windows in November and void the warranty or wait for temps above 50 degrees. At no time did I say they could wait until the end of summer 2010, 9 months after the initial work. They refused to accept the credit and demanded a refund of $200, which I agreed to do in spite of company policy, completing the contract. It was never my promise of obligation to contact this client again. If they wanted me to return to do additional work, they had the responsibility to contact me. Our contract was fulfilled and the job was done. They claim in their report that it was my duty to call them. When they requested and accepted a refund for the work not performed, that changed the contract. If they had left the amount on credit as the contract clearly states, then I would have had fiscal responsibility to complete work that is on credit with my company. This was not the case. No contractor or company is required to guarantee rates for 9 months. The standard price guarantees for most businesses is 30 days as is the case with my company. To expect that you can get work done for the same price quoted 9 months prior in just unreasonable. In summary, this client was delighted with our work, the color, the quality, as evidenced in their feedback report received on December 28, 2009. Likewise, they were sent a thank you and gift card in appreciation. This above report is nothing more than sour grapes that they waited to long to have these windows painted. It should be noted that the additional labor cost to paint the windows in question was a mere $100 for a very difficult job. But instead of paying a fair price for additional work, this client decided it was best to trash my good name on this website. I have been in business for almost 10 years, have an A rating with the Better Business Bureau, a clean record with Washington State Labor and Industries and multiple Angie's List reports with high praise feedback. I have dozons of hand written testimonials, this client included, which reflect grateful and appreciative comments. I cannot protect myself from slander on these kinds of sites, but I do stand up for my company and stand behind my work. Thank you for taking the time to read this response.

We've been wanting to have a color consultation and some rooms painted for quite some time. Her consultation was professional and well done. The crew she hired to do the painting was friendly and did a quality job painting. I would use this service again, but I would hang my own shades back up. I did ask Cindy to come back and give us another consultation and estimate. Also, these services cost more than the other estimates I received, but the work was quality work.

Fantastic! Cindy is very talented. She painted the fireplace tile to coordinate with the new mantle color. People think I have slate around the fireplace and are amazed when I tell them it is latex paint.

OMG! Cindy nailed my personality completely. By asking questions and observing my surroundings she came up with colors I would never have thought to put together, but the end result is amazing and I LOVE it! The room looks more spacious with the new colors. It's warm and inviting and has a "WOW" factor. And, it's NOT gold, beige, or tan! She truly understands how to use color to create a wonderful environment.

I enjoyed it. I like decorating anyway and was envious of her ability to connect colors to the person. It took more than a year to execute the actual paint job mostly having to due with my availability to be here while painters were here. She does faux painting and provided a bid for the proposed dining room wall and coving in my kitchen. There was what I call a wild card color used on one wall in my living area and I wasn't too sure about it. All of my friends like it the most. The colors are dark which make my place darker so I added lighting. I love my purple walls. The colors brought everything together. I did the faux finish myself. I wasn t too sure about it but the painters liked it and my friends all like it. I did not use the technique she quoted due to my limited ability.
Description of Work: I wanted to repaint my interior but was uncertain about what colors to use. I like color on walls as opposed to white. So she came out observed how I decorate, the colors in my art and furniture and devised a plan with a chip sample and a layout of which chip went to each wall.

Cindy was polite and professional. She was a big help to us in assisting us with a paint scheme for our home and interior painting tips. Prices could have been a bit lower, especially considering how much paint and all of the tools cost if you elect to do the painting yourself.
