As the prep work proceeded and the painting had begun I continually had to intercede and ask that it be done properly. The windows had old clips that used to hold the storm windows on long ago. Once the clips were removed it left rough areas where they had been and the window trim was supposed to be scraped and sanded to receive paint, as we had previously agreed. Instead, rather than doing the prep properly, the window trim was painted over without sanding the places where the clips had been. I pointed it out to Tristan and had to insist that they be done properly. Once told Tristan would do the work, but it was always on me to be the one to point it out. Tristan began backpedaling on his original statement, twice saying that he was “giving me a good deal”, as if to say that I shouldn’t expect the good job that he had promised. I replied that it was not a good deal at all if the work was not done properly. In order to protect my deck cover, which is made of a Poly material and susceptible to breakage if stepped on, I provided a four by six piece of plywood and a smaller piece to shift to help shift the larger piece around. I asked that the workers be careful to use the large plywood to step on to prevent breakage. Rather than honoring my request however, I observed one of the workers hop down from the roof above from about two feet onto the smaller plywood piece, which cracked the roofing material, leaving me with a leaky deck, which I now have to replace the panels to stop the leaks. I have a stress related condition (PTSD) which I brought up to Tristan in the beginning, telling him that I needed for the job to go smoothly as I don’t deal well with stress, which he assured me that it would. Needless to say, this has been extremely stressful to me , with my home in total disarray for over a month. Throughout the entire process I was careful to remain calm, always treating the workers with respect and dignity, providing drinks and snacks, while calmly insisting that the work be done properly. I was focused on the details of the job as mentioned and when the painting began in earnest, I was still having to point out mistakes that had been made to Tristan, who would have to backtrack and correct them. Tristan’s stepson was put on painting the trim around my windows and was getting paint all over the window frames and running over onto the body paint. He was missing complete areas of the trim and gutters and generally doing a poor job. It was not his fault, as he had been given no training and should never have been put in the position of trying to do finish work. Tristan was frustrated in having to go back and correct the mistakes as well. In the end the painting was finally finished, but not before the rains had begun and the painters having to apply paint to the house over wet wood after a rain. The South side of the house, which needed to be sealed and painted first, was not done until the last and areas which were needing to be sealed with caulk were not done until water had been pushed behind the wood by the wind and rain. The entire process, from beginning to end has been very traumatic to me and I now regret ever having contracted with Tristan. The most distressing problem of all is that, in the end, I have discovered that the paint that was applied to my home is completely wrong, which I did not realize until I had paid Tristan. I paid him with the understanding that he would return and correct some of the mistakes. I had told him that I wanted him to finish the work, rather than send someone else, which he promised that he would do on the following Saturday. In the meantime, while examining the house on a sunny day I finally realized that Tristan had painted the entire house in glossy sheen paint. I wanted to discuss the problem with Tristan in person, so when I spoke with Tristan on the phone during the week I told him that I would like to discuss something with him when he came over. Tristan assured me that he would be here the following Saturday and I took him at his word. However, when Saturday arrived, Tristan sent over the same worker that had made the mistakes I wanted corrected. I tried to call Tristan numerous times at that point, but he would not answer the phone. The worker said that he was going to see Tristan from here, so I showed him the problem I was concerned with and he agreed to tell Tristan and have him call me. He took the paint sprayer that they had stored in my garage, which I now realize that I should have not allowed to be removed until the work was corrected, as I felt uneasy. Tristan has never called me since that day. I have called him numerous times expressing my concern and requested him to please call me, but as of this time he has refused to return my calls. I left a several messages telling Tristan that I was willing to take partial responsibility, as I had not discovered the problem earlier. I stated that I would pay Tristan what he asked to come and only respray the main body of the house with the proper paint, and leave the garage the same as well as the trim on the house. Tristan has refused to answer any of my calls. In order to verify that the problem is not my mistake I have driven around Bellingham and viewed over two thousand homes and I have yet to discover one home that has been painted with a glossy sheen paint. The problem with glossy sheen paint is that it reflects every little defect, crack, or rough spot in the sun, especially on an older home that the wood has weathered over the years. It is my belief that anyone who knows anything about painting a home, in particular, a professional, should know that one does not paint an exterior of a home in glossy paint for the very reason I have pointed out. I reread the contract between All Aspect Painting and myself and it specifically states that the color and sheen would be determined by me. Before he started the job I showed the colors I had selected to Tristan in the order that I wanted the paint applied. The colors were flat with no sheen on the paint samples and at no point did Tristan ask me if I had any preference or if I wanted anything different than the norm. I had no idea that I had to specify that I wanted anything different than what all the other houses in Bellingham are painted. Once again, I did not discover the problem until I saw the paint in the sunlight and saw every flaw being reflected in the light. It is a horrible situation and I am now put in the position of finding and hiring another painter and paying for a job that should have been done correctly to begin with, as well as put up with the stress of having my home in disorder for even longer. I am seventy years old on Social Security so this is no small issue for me and creates a severe financial hardship for me as well as a taking a huge emotional toll. I am hopeful that Tristan, from All Aspect Painting will “man up” and work with me to correct the problem, but if not, I will be taking action with a small claims court action, which will create even more stress for me. I am very discouraged about this issue, as I trusted Tristan and treated him as a friend. I realize now that he misrepresented himself as a friend and as a professional and is not to be trusted. I understand that there are more people who have had issues with All Aspect Painting and I hope that, after reading this review, they will step up and speak out in order to prevent other people from having to be victimized. Regretfully Submitted, J. Dean Majors
Description of Work: I am writing this review due to unresolved issue with the painting of my home by All Aspect Painting. The issues have been many, but the main issue is that my home was painted with the wrong paint. Specifically, rather than painting my home with the usual flat, no sheen paint, it was painted with a glossy sheen paint, which with mine, being an older home with weathered wood, reflects the light off of any irregular surface showing every little rough spot and defect, as opposed to a flat surface, which does not have the same problem with reflections. I did not authorize the use of a glossy sheen paint and was not advised of their plan to use said paint. The house now looks horrible and the owner of All Aspect Painting, being apprised of the issue, refuses to answer any of my calls and refuses to acknowledge the problem or to return and correct the other problems that have also been left undone, which he previously promised to return and correct. I hired Tristan, owner of All Aspect Painting, after knowing him for about a year and having become on a friendly basis of acquaintance. Tristan had given me his business card and described jobs he had done for others. When I was financially prepared to have my home painted I called Tristan and inquired about having him do the work. Tristan came to my home and described the work that he would perform if he got the job. As we walked around the house and I pointed out my areas of concern, including the window trim which had old caulking and paint built up, and particularly, the South side gable of my home which has taken a beating from the weather and in great need of paint to protect it for the winter. Tristan assured me that he would take care of all my concerns and that the house would look great when he was finished; that the entire house would be prepped properly, with old caulk and loose paint scraped and all windows that needed attention would be scraped and sanded. Tristan also assured me that he would begin work promptly in order to be finished before the rains came. I informed Tristan that I would especially like the South side and my front deck to be finished first in order to be able to connect my dehydrator so I could start drying my abundant apple crop. We agreed on a price and I gave Tristan a deposit several days later after signing the contract with him. I then went to the local paint store where he has a account and chose the colors I wanted with the help of a design specialist at the store. I then showed the paint samples to Tristan, describing how, and in what configuration, I wanted the paint applied. We spoke at length, discussing the effect I wanted to achieve with the body and trim paint and I felt that we were on "the same page". Tristan later told me that he had ordered the paint for the job and made no mention of changing any of the details. When I gave Tristan the deposit I expected things to proceed as we had discussed. However, things began to “go South” almost immediately and I now wish I had let him go then. Upon returning home shortly after we made the agreement I found that the house had been spray washed but with many areas left dirty, including window sills and vent areas to crawlspace. I informed Tristan about the issue and he assured me that it would be corrected. I had to press the issue several more times before the cleaning was done before painting. A young man showed up a couple of days later and proceeded to prep the garage. I stated once again that I would like the front and South part of the house to be done first to beat the weather. The young man continued on the garage, doing a decent job, and after a number of days Tristan showed up and sprayed the garage and put his stepson to work painting the gutters. He stated that he was trying to help the young man out. No one else showed up during this entire time to begin work and the front deck and house were ignored. The young man who prepped the garage later proceeded to work on the house, but was moved to another job after one day, leaving Tristan’s stepson to do the prep work. Although a nice young man, he had no skills whatsoever, having had no training and did a terrible job, causing me to have to follow up and have Tristan address the issue and try to correct the mistakes.Sunny days continued, but still no one had started the painting or finished the prep work on the house. I expressed my concern to Tristan numerous times but he always told me not to worry and assured me that the work would be completed in time. Tristan began having random people show up to do the prep work who had been given no instructions on what had been discussed between us. I basically had to “ride herd” on them, attempting to get them to do the job properly. Old caulk was being primed over and window sills that were supposed to be scraped and sanded were primed over without removing the old caulk, leaving it to me to be the one to complain about it to Tristan. When I asked one of the workers to remove the old caulk before priming, he said that he had been given no instruction about that and refused to do it. I had to go in after him and scrape out the caulk myself. I later raised the issue to Tristan, but he assured me that he would take care of it when he began painting. I found that I could not leave the house if I wanted the work to be done as agreed. As a result, the most important part of the job (The house) received poorer treatment than the least important. (The garage) The windows got taped at one point and I thought work would proceed, but work again stopped and we were left in the dark. Later, after the painting had begun, I had to leave and was supposed to be gone for the day. However, my plans changed and I returned early, finding that paint was being applied to my gable trim in the reverse order that I had specified. Fortunately, only two of the gables trim had been painted, but it was obvious that the painter and Tristan were not happy with me for insisting that it be corrected, saying that it looked good their way. Had I not shown up the entire house trim would have been wrong. As things progressed Tristan was juggling my job with several others and would show up for an hour or two and paint a little but then leave, telling me he would be back in an hour or two after taking care of a problem with a hair dresser lady who he was having problems with. He would disappear and not return for at times, several days, not returning my calls of inquiry. Time went on and I became more and more concerned that the work would not be completed before the rains began. Neither the front deck nor the South side of the house were attended to as I had requested.

Response from All Aspect Painting
We painted this customers home for half price because we had a friendly acquaintence. I actually lost money on this one. I have been painting for 15 years and have never had a complaint. I do quality work and take pride in that. We painted the detached garage first with the satin paint we agreed on using because it holds up better to the elements than a flat paint. The garage got done and he was happy with the paint so we moved on to the home which got two coats, both back brushed. If the client had made the call to use a flat sheen early enough in the job I would have happily made the change, but at this point the job is finished and I was paid in full. It is a quality paint job that will last for years to come. We did a lot of extra things for him around the home including a third trim color for free he added later. I would like to warn other painters to be careful if ever working for this person. I feel like I got taken advantage of with this job. Anyone interested in seeing first hand how this job progressed and what the final product was is welcome to visit my company's website. Thank you.
