Wow! [Member Name Removed]'s review appeared here 20 years after we remodeled her kitchen and bathroom! We did the work in 1996 yet this review appeared in 2016. Must have been memorable. We like that.

This client purchased a 2 hour handyman deal through Angie's List. Sometimes squeezing a tiny project such as this into an otherwise busy schedule can be a tricky thing. Sorry we couldn't hop on to it any sooner! We tried! If there's a surge in our workload, would you, our client, rather wait for our tried and true, proven co-workers to perform the work or, instead, hire newbies off the street so as to shorten your waiting time. You know our answer, and this "C" is the price we pay. Sure, we might have been able to improve 'responsiveness' while 'quality' suffered. We prefer a safe and sane approach to our work. Quality trumps quantity.

This member must be referring to the design work we helped him with, which ultimately morphed into a rather large remodeling project for him that is now underway: major kitchen remodel; ensuite bedroom and bathroom remodel; alterations to the living room, dining room, entry, laundry, and other bedrooms. All is going very well!

Rodents can be a real issue around here... especially in areas more rural than urban. In this particular case eliminating the unused chimney chase was so smart. After all, the unused chase offered rodents a super-highway for traveling throughout their home, so why not get rid of it? Anything to interfere with unwanted creatures is a good move!

Description of Work: They performed repairs to our house and re-built our large deck to the equivalent of a new deck. We wanted the work done before the rainy season and they worked diligently to make that happen. The owner, Rick Dubrow, and his employees, Adam Yost and Patrick Martin, are first class individuals.

A tough choice for contractor and homeowner alike is whether or not to spend dough on repairing substandard or rotten deck components, as opposed to replacing the deck entirely. There's no right answer but the discovery process usually defines the best scope of work. In this particular case repairing the existing structure made the most sense and the repair project progressed well. This decision is so much like the 'move or improve' decision so many homeowners run up against... invest in one's existing home versus move into another home that may already be aligned with one's needs. A tough decision to make... one we're very experienced in helping our clients resolve.

We completed her project in October of 2014. 9 months later this review arrived (today is 7-14-15)... with no prior knowledge of a problem or issue with our performance. An overall "C" with no further comment makes it tough to know what's wrong or to make amends. 9 months after a $400 job is completed; so strange! Sure wish we knew more. I challenge the reader to study our other reviews. Formulate your own opinion about whether this review is consistent with what you read.

We found a leak in our basement in December in the Pacific NW (wet weather!!) and used a different company to help us find it. After getting inattentive service from them, we called A-1 Builders to help us. They responded immediately and thoroughly. A project manager came & poked holes in our wall to find the source and gave us all the possible options. We found a walled-in functioning water heater (!) and arranged to have it replaced. It soon became obvious that was not the source of the leak. After further investigation, we found the entire sewer line under our concrete slab was eroded. A-1 quickly came up with a plan to dig a trench the length & width of our home and replace the line. Much coordination was required with the plumber and flooring companies. The project manager and lead guy on site were very informative, helpful, and congenial during the entire 2 month process. The workers showed up every morning at 7am and worked until 5pm. They had Fridays off with this schedule. It was backbreaking work for them and I do not remember any complaining. One day, one of the regular guys did not come to work. He had been professional at my job but apparently had some unacceptable behavior elsewhere. Everyone was very professional about his removal and I was once again assured of this business's dedication to excellent service. Because of the walled-in water heater, a new cabinet and door had to be created to encase the heater. This was done with great skill and attention to detail. A small cabinet for my exposed fuse box was also made and was done in a way that matched the rest of the woodwork/handles in my house. Also, extreme care was taken to protect my furnishings from dust and dirt. The workers did a nice job cleaning up after themselves daily. If any of the workers smoked, they did not do so in my house & they did not leave any butts. I am starting another project now and am using their design division to help finalize the plans. I will have their construction division bid the project.
Description of Work: --identification of leak source in basement--very difficult and extensive --dug a trench in concrete slab the length & width of house, carried all concrete up hill --replaced sewer line --repaired concrete slab and outside concrete patio slab sections

Talk about a miserable project for a homeowner to have to tackle! Basically we had to redo all of the plumbing beneath an existing finished basement! Ugh. This meant they had to abandon the basement for the duration and allow us to problem solve as we went along. Talk about the need for trust between client and builder? This project fit the bill. We did what had to be done; did it well; did it efficiently. Got out of their hair as quickly as possible, finishing up a project we wouldn't wish on anyone.

It's December of 2014 when we're writing this response to this member's review. Since we did their first project, we've subsequently designed and rebuilt their master bedroom and bathroom. In a classic remodel we've seen repeated many times, their master suite was located in the space that used to be a garage. That earlier work was done by a prior homeowner on the cheap, so this created the need to deal with water infiltration and rot, so that the same thing wouldn't occur. Now they've got a very sweet suite; one that will not deteriorate at an accelerated pace. It's done right now. That's why they had us back!

A1 was was fantastic to work with. They told us what we could expect in advance, had everthing in writing including a time-line of when the work would be completed and progress payments expected. The lead on the job showed up on time every day, oversaw every sub-contractor and didn't leave our job until the day it was finished. He communicated with us daily and took care of every concern we had along the way. They were willing to let us help in the areas which we were able and if we had any problem, it was taken care of promptly and to our complete satisfaction.
Description of Work: Complete remodel of kitchen and bathroom. Bathroom - Stripped completely down and remodel included framing, floor, sheet rock, fixtures (toilet, shower & sink), paint, electrical, and plumbing (including moving the toilet to a different location). Kitchen/Living Area - Removal of a weight bearing wall in center of room to create one open area kitchen/living space. Remodel included complete tear down before framing, sheet rock, paint, all light fixtures, all cabinets, countertops, sink, plumbing and appliances, new wall tile, and center island.

Yes, it worked quite well to allow our clients to tackle that which they wanted to take on, thereby making the project affordable. We agreed upon things they could do before we took over the project, and then tasks they could take on after we accomplished our tasks. Smooth riding. And they didn't take on so much that they regretted it... it's now a year later and they also had us do a master bedroom remodel, gutting and redoing their bedroom and full bathroom. Again, they took on tasks such as non-structural demolition; painting and staining; final, professional cleaning. They held their costs at bay by providing sweat equity... and achieved their goals! You can too.

Their work was excellent. We provided them with work space and they are careful about not getting dust into our home. They put up plastic to prevent this. They have a schedule but sometimes things come up and they have to switch workers which was not a problem for us. They stand behind their warranties. They work hard and try to finish the project in the specified time. They hire good sub contractors. They are friendly and punctual. They do a good job cleaning up afterward and haul away all of their debry. They work with you if you want to do some of the work yourself. They bring out a port-a-potty for their workers so they do not need to use your facilities. We have used this company for various remodeling projects since 1996.
Description of Work: They came out to trade out 2 8 foot glass doors to windows and take care of the exterior and interior wall by finishing and painting it. They also replaced a waterproof decking material on our huge deck. They found dry rot in a carport wall and they repaired and replaced that as well to match the existing exterior.

We joke around with these clients that they should have a ceremonial desk at our office, given how many projects we've done with them! They have been consistently wonderful customers, something as important to us as it is for a property owner to find a consistently good contractor. It goes both ways. Imagine the hardship of us signing a contract for a large project with a dysfunctional property owner! Not good. So wonderful repeat clients are, well, WONDERFUL!

To tell the story 'from start to finish', as the prompt suggests, for our project would be next to impossible in this space. But the important information that we want to share is that overall, the project went splendidly. Yes there were a few delays..nothing unreasonable...and often due to changes we ourselves chose to make. Yes, the cost went up from the orginal discussion, but again...largely due to changes made by us, or un-foresee-able snags related to safety or code requirements. No more than is expected on any remodel or building project. By the way, at the outset of the project, A1 gave us a clear well-defined written description of what to expect and possible unexpected snags. We felt we had a good idea of what to expect on this project, and any 'snags' were handled forthrightly, promptly, and professionally by A1 Builders. Our experience with everyone working on our project was positive and acutally FUN. Workers were friendly and professional in their behavior to us (the consumers) and to each other...which we found to be equally as important. On a project this size, there must have been moments of tension and/or frustration for those involved in this project, but if there was, it was kept behind the scenes. We saw only a relaxed friendly demeanor....folks seemed to ENJOY their work. We would work with A1 Builders again in a heart-beat, if we had another project to do on our home, and we have heartily recommended the company to anyone we thought might be thinking of a remodel project. Perhaps the most important benefit we enjoyed working with A1 is that they were DEPENDABLE, IN CONTACT, and HONEST about anything that seemed like it wasn't going according to plan. They SHOWED-UP!! It was great.
Description of Work: A1 Builders worked on every surface of our home both interior and exterior, including but not limited to: Doors, windows, floors, countertops, shower tile, complete remodel and addtion of bathrooms, energy audit and recommendations. Replacement of furnace and water heater, restoration of and custom building of cabinets and storage, Finishing off the garage and addition of beautiful carriage doors. Use of reclaimed materials wherever possible and every effort was made to keep the project 'green'. Addition of a beautiful picket fence, custom gates and custom front entry door. Complete re-design and replacement of front porch with addition of a covered entry. The list goes on and on. We could not be more pleased with the results. The craftsmanship and professional quality of the work A1 did for us met and exceeded our expecations.

I guess I covered this in the above window...but please read the comments above...and again I say...from start to finish, Adaptations Design Studio was a joy to work with. I would add that from the financial perspective, Maggie and the Adaptations team were meticulous and tenacious about helping us find ways to re-claim and re-use materials (keeping the project green, and maintain the home's original feel and bones) , and to save on costs, without sacrificing quality. And again, we really valued the way Adapations showed respect for our ideas and helped us to implement them by using their expertise to bring it all together into a cohesive and beautiful space. We highly recommend Adaptaions Design Studios every chance we get, and would go to them without reservation if we ever needed to embark on a remodel/restoration project.
Description of Work: Adaptations Design Studio designed the remodel/restore project we did on our mid-century rambler/cottage home. This was a long-distance effort for the most part, as my husband and I were still living out of state at the time...and the remodel was being done here in WA. On behalf of my husband and myself, I can't say emphatically enough, how wonderful it was to work with Maggie and all the folks in the Adaptations Design Studio, to create the wonderful little cottage we live in now. The home needed extensive repairs and 'adaptations' in order for it to fit our functional needs as well as our aesthetic desires, and of course, to meet safety requirements. Adaptations Design Studio, by use of email, texting, phone calls, photo sharing, you name it, came up with a design that fit us perfectly. This was possible because of the designer's amazing insight, skill, and creative ingenuity. In nearly every room where there was no space to be found, Maggie found space for additional storage, closets, even my beloved vintage claw-foot bathtub, which had to fit into a particularly cozy corner of the newly designed, BEAUTIFUL, master bathroom. From bath fixtures to counter and floor surfaces to window coverings, to hardware inside and out...cabinet resorations (and custom built new), lighting, paint colors, window trim, interior and exterior doors....right down to the beautiful little chrystal doorknob I wanted on the door of my 'yoga/grand-kid' room.... ...The details of this project are endless, but let me just say that our home went from a sad little 1950s rambler with great heart...to a beautiful, but not ostentacious, charming sea-port-neighborhood cottage...also with great heart, great character, and an amazingly efficient use of space! High marks to Adaptations on many levels, but especially in their (Maggie in particular,as we worked most closely with her...but I know she had a great team to work with) dedication to LISTENING to what we had to say, and UNDERSTANDING the spirit behind our hopes for the 'feel' of our home...both for purposes of sharing it with others, and for our own sense of self-expression. Adaptaion design, at every step of the journey, was prompt to respond, dependable to do what was promised, and a JOY to work with!

The feelings are mutual, Customer. Your project progressed so smoothly because, in part, of your solid relationship with Maggie, your designer. A solid client/designer relationship is a critical success factor for a project to flow this well. Much like the client/Project Manager relationship. It's why we are a design/build company! In house we have designers and Project Managers so that communications are clear, timely and precise.

Overall working with A-1 was a breeze. they were always very responsive to us when issues or concerned came up. Every one on the job was friendly, honest and helpfull. Some days we felt the work could of been moving ahead faster but there were many elements of the project going on at various times, which all toke time. A-1 did stay with in the range of the bid, and followed a preset timeline almost to a T. We are extremely happy with the high level of quality A-1 provided us with. They are hold customer satisfaction in high regard, which is a rare find in todays world.

This project went smoothly because our clients understood that remodeling projects don't necessarily flow in a linear pattern as do new construction projects. Remodels are inherently non-linear, so a smooth project actually has whitecaps, or speed bumps. Therefore, a smooth remodel is characterized by a client and contractor who can comfortably navigate such curve balls as an effective team. We did just that. These clients got an "A"!

We needed someone to help us decide how to redesign portions of our house to better suit our needs. It was a harder process than either my husband or myself new it would be. All the choices were explored to the fullest. The result being a design that we felt sure about and were not second guessing during the remodel stages. That being said at times we felt there was too much tome spent "over designing" things. Perhaps we were more in need of lots of rough drawings and loose ideas then the finished drawings of so many ideas. Cindy always did a good job listening to what we wanted and what was working or not working and redesigning things. It toke quite a bit more time then we thought is would to get the plans to the final stages. Overall Adaptations did a great job and we are satisfied with the end results. We may not be fully appreciative of all the talent the team has at Adaptaions because we may not be the type of people that need all those details of design. they are good at what they do and we would recommend them toothers for sure.
Description of Work: Adaptaions helped us redesign our living space of our new home. We came in with bigger plans/dreams then were actually possible with our budget. Cindy worked with us to find a solution for adding a shower to our upstairs half bathroom. We worked hard to fix our steep staircase but were unable to do it without a huge major investment. Adaptaions helped us decide how to redo our kitchen to best suit our lifestyle. Walked us through many different options in cabinetry, counter tops, floors and lighting.

The Customer brings up a great point... how much design is just right, versus being over-designed? Finding the right balance is challenging. Because most of our production work is designed by our own designers, we're used to getting our carpenters the right amount of design work they will need. And this same design work must meet the needs of the permit center, and our subs, and our clients! Drawings and specifications need to adequately communicate our client's design intent to all affected parties!

Explained above. It went very well. I'm pleased with the results and feel safer in my home.
Description of Work: A1 provided a thorough inspection of my older home in response to my query about having rotted barge rafters replaced. Because of the age of my home, the inspection was recommended. I was provided with a detailed list of potential hazards, code violations, rotted areas and recommendations for repair/replacement. I viewed a slideshow of photos of the findings and we had a discussion about prioritizing the work to be done and the costs involved. The project manager met me at the house on several occasions (accommodating my work schedule) to discuss exactly what was to be done and to talk about choices I could make regarding materials. He explained the potential lead hazards with an old home and what I could expect in terms of a timeline and inconvenience. The contract was thoroughly explained. I was given notice of when work was to begin. The workers were courteous, respectful and hard-working. Neighbors viewing the project commented that the workers seldom took breaks. They arrived each day at 7:00 a.m. and often were still at the site at 6:00 p.m. They left a note for me each evening describing what had been done and what they expected to accomplish the next day. At one point they were going to replace a bathroom window and chose to wait until the following week instead of doing the work on a Friday in case there was a potential problem--they didn't want me to be without a bathroom over a week-end. I appreciated the consideration. The services included replacing 5 windows, an entire wall that had sustained water damage over the years, a front entrance that was not sufficiently sealed from the elements (new door, waterproof casements), several barge rafters and a back porch. They also arranged for some electrical work that was hazardous and plumbing for an out-of-code drainage pipe. My house is cedar shake. The workers used primed shakes to avoid water damage until painting could be done later in the year. The inside and outside window framing was done with pride and great care. I was consulted on the framing material, since exact replacements were no longer available. The workers took care with my pets. They cleaned up after themselves each day. The project manager checked in regularly.

Member's project is a great example of why homeowners should keep up with 'wellness exams' for their homes. The logic is the same as why most people get annual, or near-annual, physicals, or wellness exams. We recommend that people do this for their homes every 5 years or so. Deferred maintenance simply costs more than continuous maintenance, but, hey, life gets in the way. So does rot, though. It catches up to you if you don't stay on top of it. So we often perform a pre-remodel condition evaluation to make sure our clients spend their money wisely. All too often a client may want a kitchen upgrade, for example, while, unbeknownst to them, there's active rot in their crawlspace. Let's tackle the 'have to' work prior to, or simultaneously with, any 'want to' work. We'll help you get there!

Rick Debrow, owner of A-1 Builders was hired by our temporary council as an "expert" regarding a severe drainage defect caused by the contractor that built our home. He recommended that we paint on a waterproof membrane material to take care of the problem. For this he made more than one trip out to our home and charged mileage and travel time as well as for time spent. Much of the time he joked with our attorney and discussed comparison of their hybrid cars at our expense. We wound up hiring an expert from Seattle who determined that the problem was much more serious and gave us the documentation we needed to obtain damages in the amount of $100,000 more than A-1 proposed we needed. The rate A-1 charged us for this "service" was outrageous.

Allow us to clear up the many inaccuracies that set this review apart from the other stellar Angie’s List reviews we’ve received to date. Know that our actual client was not the person who wrote this review. Our client was the reviewer’s attorney. Our client had agreed in writing to our payment schedule, which delineated all costs, including mileage and travel time. Our bill to our client matched this agreement. He wrote this brief email to us on 10-9-12… “I reviewed my file and located the signed copy of the Expert Witness Agreement which you dated June 27, 2011, in which I am identified as the ‘Client’ in the first paragraph, as well as in the signature block. I signed the Agreement. My cleints never signed it, as it was understood that I was your client and not them. I was responsible to A-1 for payment under the contract. Thanks again for your excellent work, Rick.” Here’s a brief description of why we were hired as an expert witness: a three story addition was added to a one story beach cabin by another builder and there was significant water infiltration into the basement of the addition. We were hired to understand the problem and to provide possible solutions to this water infiltration. But our investigation included 14 additional items besides the water infiltration issue; this, from the member's hand-written list given to Rick during our first visit on site on July 20, 2011. Our site investigation, summarized in an email dated 8-10-11 to our client, said that we discovered “…water… coming from multiple locations…” We then described four possible solutions, the most practical of which was to dig under the cabin, adjacent to the basement wall of the addition, creating a huge drainage plane that would intercept the water before it ever reached the basement wall and slab. Since this most practical solution was also, most probably, the least expensive solution, we were asked to provide a preliminary guesstimate for that work, pending further study. We did so, proposing a good faith estimate of almost fifty nine thousand dollars. Note, as well, that the single sentence in our 9-16-11 cover email that accompanied our Proposal read as follows “…. give a call and we can go over this if you have questions. Bit of a guess at the moment.” Did our Proposal suggest “…we paint on a waterproof membrane material to take care of the problem…” as the member’s review simplistically suggests? Yes it does. But this membrane is simply one of many parts of the solution. Much like saying that open heart surgery can be simplistically described as suturing closed the incision made to gain access to one’s heart! Additional parts of the solution included: 1. Providing a huge excavation behind the addition and under the cabin, on the order of 10’ deep, 5’ wide and 35’ across. 2. This trench, backfilled with numerous rigid perforated pipes and drain rock, would act as a curtain drain, allowing gravity to capture all of the water prior to reaching the addition and slab. These drains would then passively reach daylight without the need for any pumps. 3. In order to accomplish this excavation we would have to remove, and later replace, their main entry (covered porch), part of the cabin foundation, and some of the landscaping and hardscaping. 4. Perhaps last of all the remedies would be the least invasive and least expensive piece: cleaning the back side of the addition’s basement wall and applying the waterproof membrane. If our solution, as the member expresses, was simply to “…paint on a waterproof membrane material to take care of the problem…”, why would our Proposal show a good faith estimate of around $60,000? Sixty grand to paint on a waterproof membrane?! No further discovery was authorized after we submitted our Proposal; nor did we write a report because we never received authorization to do so. Our last communication was to request another 5 to 8 hours of time needed to continue the study and to prepare the report. Said request was not granted. Our bill was paid by our client, without dissent or concern, and that was the last we had heard about this project prior to this review on Angie’s List. After all is said and done, we provided a good faith estimate for one of numerous solutions which required further investigation and reporting. All of this was clearly articulated, using the same level of clear communication that has garnered the balance of our near-perfect Angie’s List reviews. And we charged exactly what was agreed upon to reach this level of investigation. Ultimately we more than satisfied our client–the member’s attorney, calling our performance ‘excellent work’. Why then does the member rip into us? Perhaps it’s because of poor communications between the member and his attorney? We don’t know. What we do know is that the member’s review is the only one he’s posted on Angie’s List; his one and only. Look at all the other reviews of our company, and those of our design division – Adaptations. These other reviews paint a near perfect record of what we do. {Feel free to email Rick Dubrow at rdubrow@a1builders.ws or call him at 360-734-5249 x108 for further input and/or documentation needed to dispel any fears sparked by this inaccurate review.}

In both cases the design and build quality were excellent, and we've been very happy with the results. A1 is a great company to work with. They listened and took the time before we started to understand our wants and tastes, and provided a thorough and professional proposal detailing everything from insulation to doorknobs. They then worked with us every step of the way to ensure our satisfaction. All their crew were prompt, thorough, and respectful of us and our property. They did quality work, and above all they accepted responsibility and held themselves accountable for their work. Nobody is perfect, but one of A1's best qualities is their willingness to make things right and even point out their own mistakes when they find them - no worrying about the contractor trying to cover things up until they're gone. We've had bad experiences with contractors in the past, and working with A1 was a breath of fresh air. Kudos to Rick Dubrow for creating a culture of quality, service and integrity; and to his team, especially Patrick and Shawn who worked with us on both our projects.
Description of Work: We have done two projects now with A1 in the last 4 years. The first was an interior remodel that involved turning an attached garage into a master bedroom and bath suite, and a complete remodel of two bathrooms. The second was the addition of a year-round livable, energy-efficient sunroom and surrounding patio.

As we write this response we're actively working on a third project for the Customer's. Once completed their home will be so much more energy efficient than when we started into this process a few years ago. Being in the foothills this energy efficiency should pay off big time with regards to their comfort... year round. Kudos to the Customer's for the stellar stewardship of their home!

In both cases the design work was excellent. Maggie of Adaptations took all the time necessary to get to know us and our tastes, made thoughtful and tasteful recommendations, and worked with us to develop and implement our own ideas. Working with Maggie was truly a collaborative effort: she listened, recommended, and incorporated our ideas into the design as well as her own. As with A-1 Builders that did the work, Maggie and Adaptations were never afraid to admit a mistake and take responsibility for making it right. They were also always flexible and effectively managed last-minute changes. On more than one occasion during construction, panic set in at the last minute when we realized we were going to have to live with our choices for years to come, resulting in us requesting last-minute changes. Maggie handled these changes with common sense, aplomb and good humor (one instance she dubbed "the backsplash meltdown"), either incorporating the changes or calming our fears. Adaptations has been great to work with on both of our projects.
Description of Work: We have done two projects with Adaptations. They did all the design work for us for two remodel projects, which were then executed by A-1 Builders. The first was an interior remodel that involved turning an attached garage into a master bedroom and bath suite, and a complete remodel of two bathrooms. The second was the addition of a year-round-livable, energy-efficient sunroom and surrounding patio, as well as a kitchen remodel including countertops and cabinets.

Adaptations' designers work hard before a construction project starts to make sure you are happy after the project is completed! You nailed it in your performance review, Customer... You clearly get the need for proper planning, and proper planning allows us to minimize headaches along the way.

The entire process was handled in a timely fashion. The estimate was given and a date set for the work along with a scheduled completion date. More damage was discovered once the siding was removed and additional repairs were needed that were not part of the initial estimate. The workman showed up early and worked for 2-3 days to get the job finished. Where the story gets interesting and what has endeared A-1 to me as a contractor I have used 2 more times since the above mentioned repairs were done is as follows. After the repairs were complete I was anxious for our first wind driven winter rain storm which was the only set of circumstances that the leak manifested itself. It took a few weeks for this to happen and much to my dismay when the rain was driving into the south wall I still found evidence of water coming inside the house in the same spot as it had before. A call to A-1 the following day had the foreman back out to the house to investigate the problem. After some investigative work it was determined that one of the workman had damaged the flange of one of the vinyl windows that they had re-installed. This tear had caused the continued leaking. Now I am sure you are thinking to yourself, why would you recommend someone who make a mistake in a repair job? There is no way that I could have determined that the damage to the window flange was something that pre-existed the work that was done or if it was caused by the work that was performed by A-1. A-1's foreman theorized that one of their workman caused the damage inadvertently when re-installing the window. A-1's owner contacted me and said that they would cover the cost to remove the window and replace it with a new one as it was their error. As it turns out I upgraded to a better window and paid the difference on the window but that was it. A-1 took care of it as promised and the window has been trouble free for 5 years. I was so impressed by their honesty that I have used them for two subsequent repair jobs in the past year. Having dealt with unscrupulous contractors in the past, this was a refreshing change to find someone that actually stands behind their work. I have recommended them to several friends and co-workers who have been in need of repair services. And I would heartily recommend them to you as well.
Description of Work: After determining the possible source of a chronic (but occasional) window leak I contacted A-1 Builders after receiving a recommendation from a neighbor. The owner himself showed up to provide an estimate for the work needed and stated that he knew exactly where the problem area was based on other similar situations his company had handled. A-1 removed the siding on the southern facing wall of our home which revealed extensive moisture damage to the sheathing and some of the framing as well. The source of the water intrusion was from a half moon shaped window that was not flashed when it was installed at the time the house was built. All windows on this wall were removed and water damage was repaired and the windows properly flashed and re-installed.

There's a quotation we heard recently which so describes our attitude towards our work. No, we don't know who the author is but we sure know what he or she meant... 'trust is our currency'. Amory Lovins said that “...economies are supposed to serve human ends, not the other way round. We forget at our peril that markets make a good servant, a bad master and a worse religion." All commerce should serve real human needs and trust should be the foundation of it all. Trust should trump profit... always.

We met with the designer several times in order to outline our wishes, and then review her design details. We were given samples of tile to look at and compare. We visited cabinet and plumbing dealerships recommended by the designer to pick out our desired styles and fixtures. During the construction process, we met with the designer on a regular basis to review work in progress and go over questions. There were no unanswered questions. All expensed items were explained in detail. When a lighting detail appeared awkward in the 'new' kitchen, we were able to make the needed changes with no hesitation. The designer was able to conceptualize the log structure and adapt the design to fit. (The log walls are not flat or square. The designer made it easy for the carpenter to adjust the fitting of cabinets and counters)
Description of Work: Design the remodel of kitchen and master bathroom, including cabinets, countertops, lighting, tub and tiling for kitchen and bathroom. This was complicated by the log structure of both rooms.

Met and discussed project with project carpenter/supervisor. He took over with preparations (masking, draping plastic barriers) and coordinated floor refinishers and stone counter supplier. The process was well-planned and carried out. We were fully included in progress, and when decisions were required. The work place was kept clean throughout. There were no delays as the work progressed from the first dismantling of wall boards to final finishings.
Description of Work: Rebuilt kitchen and bathroom. Work complicated by the fact that this is a log home. Replaced counters, cabinets and lighting in kitchen. Replaced tub and tile in bathroom.

Quite a challenge doing finish work on a log structure! It's one thing to alter dimensionally built, stick-framed buildings that tend to move around in straight lines. Quite another to adapt to curves and logs. Not a problem; simply a bigger challenge. We adore challenges. Bring 'em on!
