Black Ox Standing Seam Roofing Inc

Roofing, Metal Fabrication & Restoration, Skylights

About us

Black Ox Roofing installs standing seam metal roofing on residential and commercial buildings using state of the art equipment. The fabrication process begins in our 5000 square foot work shop. Using accurate measurements obtained during a site visit, or from owner supplied architectural plans, we are able to compile a list of the necessary components for each roof system. We fabricate as many items as possible within the controlled environment of our workshop. The remainder of the components are roll formed on site and custom fitted to each individual roof dimension. In this way we are able to provide a "tailor fit" for each and every roof configuration. We will be happy to discuss any and all of the various options available to our potential customers. We realize that each roof project is specific to it's owner and we will try to guide you in the right direction for your specific needs. We are very proud of the fact that our steel product is "Energy Star Rated", and as such is eligible for any tax credit incentives offered at the Federal and State levels. All of our steel can be 100% recycled. Black Ox Roofing Inc. is fully insured. We carry full liability and workers compensation coverage. We will be happy to verify this for you. A job well done and customer satisfaction remain as our primary goals.

Black Ox did an outstanding job in some very rough Vermont winter conditions. Tom is a quality contractor. He was always in communication and kept me updated with the progress. I live almost 200 miles away from where the work was being performed on our vacation home. I needed someone I could trust and Black Ox and Tom fit the bill nicely. Quality workmanship at a fair price. I would definitely hire Black Ox again!

It didn't go.
Description of Work: Nothing, I tried twice to get Tom to come out and give me a bid on the project, but he never did come out after asking more than once. My last chat with him was that he was coming out by Friday to look at it and still haven't heard back from him five days past that Friday.

Response from Black Ox Standing Seam Roofing Inc
This customer requested an on site visit to formulate an estimate. We are very busy and told him that it would be a week or 2 before we could get there. On line discussions, via angies list, indicated that the porch roof job would require an on site visit to determine the exact dimensions and requirements of this project. The 'on site' visit was performed on 7/25/17,(Monday, but customer was told we would stop by Friday, which means we were 2 days past our promise, Sorry). The on site visit determined that the Porch structure was in need of a TOTAL reconstruction, due to rotted wood framing and a roof system that had been left incapacitated and leaking for many years. We took pictures and notes of the structure, to be used in reply to this customer....however, we were unable to return the findings to the customer until 2 days later, due to a busy schedule. So sorry that we could not be more responsive, or in a more timely manner, but, like they say, The good guys are always busy. At any rate, my apologies. Hate to see an F rating, but..... Oh, We have responded to [Member Name Removed] to inform him of our findings as pertains to the porch roof structure, And it's need for total reconstruction, which will need to be performed by a qualified building contractor, NOT a roofing contractor, such as ourselves. Whence the structure is rebuilt, we can move forward with installing a new metal roof system, which is the ONLY type of work that we, as Metal Roofing Contractors, perform.

The experience could not have been better. Although I was paying a little more than I might have paid to a different contractor, I could see from the start that I had made the right decision choosing Black Ox. I had every confidence the roof would be what I expected and am. The contractor and crew did everything they said they would do. They went about their work with remarkable exactness and efficiency and attention, throughout, to doing things right. They were also easy to have around and always respectful. And they were very, very tidy!

Started a couple of days late, but that is unavoidable in the roofing world. I am very happy with the whole experience. The bid for this job was much lower that their competitors, and the final price came in under the bid! Nice people, considerate workmen, made an effort not to trample the gardens. I have no complaints and I recommend them without reservation.

The 52' x 18' roof was installed in 6 hours. The 5 men that made up the team worked really well together. One on the ground doing the cutting and bending of the pans, the next passing the pan up to the 3 on the roof. The 3 on the roof then installed the pan. It was impressive to see them work together and make it happen. They worked around a chimney at the end of the house and 4 penetrations in the roof. The roof looks great. So far it seems to be performing well.

Very pleased with the work and price. Tom is a stand-up person to deal with and his crew is professional, courteous and hard working. Our house has a lot of peaks and valleys, and they were dealt with very well. All debris was removed. The price was considerably less than another local contractor who quoted, and Black Ox was available four months earlier. It did take about eight months between my first contact with Tom and start of our job, but that's because standing seam metal roofers are in very high demand in our area. If your area is similar, start planning your replacement at least a year before you think you'll need the job done. Best way to communicate with Tom is via email, but since he's a really busy fellow I advise some patience when waiting for email replies. It'll be well worth it. Like I said, despite taking a while to get on the schedule, our job was done months before other contractors were available. Tom and I discussed the advantages and disadvantages of installing the roof over shingles or stripping the old shingles and putting down a new underlayment. In the end, I opted for installation over the old shingles. The cost difference is $10,000-$12,000, so it's a big part of the decision. The metal doesn't lie quite as flat as it would with no shingles underneath, but I don't think it's all that noticeable. There are also some advantages as far as noise abatement, extra installation and another layer of leak protection (got that info online.) As an aside, if you have gutters be prepared for them to be removed, and you'll need a gutter company to reinstall them. Some of our gutters had covers, but a different type of cover is required for standing seam roofs because they shed water much faster. So allocate some extra funds for this part of the job. And if you have antennas or a satellite dish, find someplace else to mount them. You don't want anything screwed onto that nice new metal roof! Bottom line, it was a pleasure doing business with Black Ox and I highly recommend them.

Overall it went extremely well. My house is about 150 years old and has a few eccentricities that required some ingenuity in installing the roof. For example, where the house and garage intersected was problematic, but they were able to fit the roof so that the snow doesn't build up there, which it did with the old roof. There are also dormer windows on both sides of the house, so the roof required special attention there to correct the problems of the old roof. Due to bad weather (rain and snow), the crew was not able to work for several days. To expedite the job, Tom Mullens, owner and President of the company, came to work with the crew when the weather cleared. That demonstrated real commitment to getting the job done and done well. I was very impressed his commitment and the extra effort he put in. Since there was still snow on the ground when they finished the job, Mr. Mullens said they would come back once the snow was melted to thoroughly clean up the grounds, pick up any nails, etc. I would most certainly used Black Ox Roofing again, should I need roofing installed.

Tom's team came in on time and did what he said they would in the expected time frame. I was on site for the whole installation. They obviously took pride in their work. A neighbor of mine who runs big commercial construction projects on a global basis noted that the roof looked like high quality commercial construction. I'm very happy with the details. I wish we had chosen a bit darker color gray for the metal but that is on us. I recommend trying to see actual samples rather than looking at internet pictures of colors. I would hire Tom's team again and I highly recommend them for a high quality standing seam metal roof installation.
Description of Work: Tom gave me a good bid to remove an old roof from our cabin in Vermont - we'd had lots of ice 'damns' with leaks - and put on a new roof with a layer of rigid insulation, new decking and ice/water shield under a fabricated standing seam roof cover. The bid was competitive and complete.

The Black Ox crew did a beautiful job roofing our 140 year old village house. Our house rambles a bit, so there are lots of valleys and some real funky spots where multiple eves come together, but Tom and crew did a great job getting things buttoned up. Because the house has a cold roof on it, Tom custom made flashing for the entire perimeter of the roof line to close in the space between the roofs--really impressive work. His team was courteous, professional and remarkably quick. You really can't go wrong with Black Ox if you need a new roof.

We solicited estimates for a roofing repair job. We found this contractor through Angie's list. The initial estimate was provided via email based on photos and "walking measurements." It seemed very low so we asked for an on-site estimate. This eventually occurred but the whole process was very lengthy. Every attempt to contact the owner (Tom) was met with prolonged wait times for a response. Most of his emails or phone messages were prefaced with how busy he was (good for his business, not good for us!) Unfortunately, this was true for a number of roofers as well. Eventually (after > 2 months) with the summer more than half over, and no clear evidence that the job would get done before the winter, we decided to move on to another contractor. Also note that the estimate was not detailed and itemized like some others that we received. This was our initial first choice to do the work, but the risk seemed too great with the poor communication.

Response from Black Ox Standing Seam Roofing Inc
Hello, Tom Mullen speaking; president of Black Ox Roofing Inc. In response to this disgruntled review I will offer the following: I was contacted by this 'potential customer' via email and I responded to the best of my abilities. He was told from the onset that we were very busy...fielding many emails and phone calls. It is noteworthy to mention that I, as sole owner, operator, and president, of Black Ox Roofing Inc, handle all estimate requests via email and/or phone. I employ a small crew of 6 men; all very competent and well versed in my roofing techniques and attention to details. Most of these men have been under my employ for more than 7 years. We take great pride in our work and the satisfaction of our customers. That said, it is reasonable to expect that this small group of roofers is only able to perform a certain amount of work in any given period of time. When we are busy we must turn some potential clients away....simply due to the fact that we cannot complete more work than our bodies will allow....all while maintaining HIGH QUALITY work ethics. This is probably the 'preface' to which this potential client refers when siting my 'busy' emails to him. The long and short of this response is to let folks know my side of the story. I was contacted via email, I replied via email. I even drove 1.5 hours ONE WAY to do an ON SITE estimate for this guy. I met with his wife and discussed the roofing project (he was not home on the day i did the site visit...as seemed to always be the case). I then replied to his estimate request via email with "SPECIFIC" details as to my potential concerns and recommendations for his project. I told him that it would be best to contact a local contractor to address the removal and replacement of Trim and Siding that would be required...since the were several areas where our new roofing would need to be 'flashed' up under the trim and siding....and that this would be the only PROPER way to address these areas. I never had the chance to discuss these details since this potential customer was; either unavailable or out of town...and seemed not to be interested in conversing via email about these details. He refers to my estimate as being LOW. Seems to me that this would be a 'positive' thing! After all, who wants to pay MORE? Anyway, My estimate was provided to him in a reasonable time period and he knows it. Perhaps the most disturbing thing about this whole review is the fact that We Did NOT even perform any work for this guy!!! He feels the need to review my company in a derogatory tone simply due to the fact that we are so busy that we cannot keep up with the potential clients....sad... I wish that we were able to do more, but quality will not be sacrificed. I accept responsibility for not being as prompt as I would have been were times a little slower. After learning that this 'potential customer' would not be using Black Ox for his project,I responded to him in an email, wishing him and his family the Best Of Luck with their roof project. I never wish ill upon anyone, nor do I hold grudges; I sincerely hope that his roofing needs will be met. Again, it is unfortunate that I invested so much time and energy (not mention travel expenses) on this potential customer, but 'That's Business'. I (We) will continue to do our best to provide great roofing services to all of our clients. Quality Work and Customer Satisfaction will remain # 1 for me and my crew.

Tom kept me posted on their schedule and when they expected to get to my roofs via email. The day the crew did the work it was 9 degrees! I was amazed that they could work in such cold weather but they didn't even look cold. The crew member that I spoke with was very polite and professional and all of the work was completed in one day. They did a beautiful job and the invoice was the same as the estimate. Tom is easy to work with and very responsive to questions. I highly recommend Black Ox Roofing.

Our house is over 200 years old and have owned it for over 35 years. Up until the standing seam was applied we would have problems with water and ice even immediately after having a new asphalt roof applied. We were reluctant to use someone so far away but Tom provided local reference houses we could look at and provided a very reasonable price quote. The workers were very nice and professional, the product looks great, but most of all our water leaks are gone!

I was considerate that the weather has been especially soggy in our area with daily rain & thunder storms, so it has been very difficult for them to schedule exact dates for jobs. However, the owner, Tom Mullen, was very conscientious about keeping me informed as to the timing for my job and he was willing to discuss/answer any of my questions. I got estimates from 4 roofing companies and Black Ox cost estimate was not the highest or the lowest. I chose Black Ox because I had had very positive feedback from friends and/or former customers with assurance that I would be getting the very best quality product and installation. The crew of 3 were very courteous and professional. They finished the job in 2 days as promised and left the site clean and tidy of all debris. I would highly recommend Black Ox.

Excellent, couldn't be happier with the final results. Initial estimate amount was exactly what we ended up paying for the whole project. We were lucky to have cooperative weather throughout the installation. Total elapsed time for the work was about one week for a somewhat complex job - two peaks/valleys and two chimney crickets. Very neat and hard-working crew. Would definitely recommend to anyone considering a standing seam roofing.

They are a little bit out of town but they still have the best price; they were half the price of some of the local folks. They are excellent. I had them put metal roofing on my new addition which has skylights. About a week after they finished it snowed and rained a little and it leaked a little around the skylight. During a snow storm, the owner came out to look at it. He was a little upset with his people but about a week later they were there redoing the areas around the skylights. They really stand behind their work. It was an excellent price and an excellent deal.

The overall experience was excellent with regard to quality, price and value. Of the three estimates I got, Black Ox was in the middle and came with excellent references for customer satisfaction. The roof had a number of complicated features and they did a great job with it. The crew was professional and courteous at all times. The site was cleaned up at the end of each day and final clean-up left little behind. I had an estimate from March 2011 that we finally decided to move on in July. I was informed that there would be a 3.5% increase as steel prices had gone up over the summer. I just received the bill and it was true to the estimate and increase as discussed. The crew was on site longer than expected but most of this can be attributed to numerous days of bad weather. I called one rainy day when a leak developed in an area that had been half-completed and the owner came out within a few hours to tarp the roof. I would definitely use them again and will recommend them without reservation.

They did a pretty good job with the roof. Their cleanup was terrible; they didn't cleanup. They also left our garage door open on the coldest day of the winter and our pipes froze and burst. They get a good mark for the roof itself but lousy marks for cleanup and for stupidity. Their communication wasn't very good either. We wouldn’t use them again.

Response from Black Ox Standing Seam Roofing Inc
In response to this customer, I, Tom Mullen, as president of Black Ox Roofing Inc., will respond with this statement: We contracted with this customer to remove the old roofing and replace with a new standing seam roof. The work was to be performed during the cold winter months, January I believe. While working in temperatures below zero degrees farenheit, we completed the work in a timely fashion. It was noted to the homeowner that there would indeed be a few scraps left behind due to the timing of the job and the abundance of snow that surrounded the building. Further, that we would come to clean this remaining scrap in the Spring as soon as all the snow had melted. (Which we (I, personally) did) The confusion about the Garage Door: During one of the coldest days on the job we left the garage door open to allow us access to the electrical power, which we needed to power our equipment. It was apparently and oversite on our part, as well as the homeowners', to forget to address the issue of the garage being a "heated enclosure". Thus, there was a lack of communication, that I share equally, in regards to the need for the garage to remain warm. It is unfortunate that the homeowners, (who actually were at the house during the day of the door being open) did not communicate to me and my crew that the Garage was in fact "heated". In conclusion, I would say that these homeowners failed to provide Black Ox Roofing Inc. with the necessary information (in regards to the heated garage) and thus a problem evolved. It is not uncommon for us to use power within a garage enclosure and leave the doors open during our time on the job. They forget to mention however, that I, as owner and president of Black Ox, provided financial coverage for the damage to their pipes. I pride myself on being honest and open when issues arise and to try to deal with them as professionally and courteously as possible. Further, I always look to the customers satisfaction as being of the utmost importance. It is unfortunate that this customer remains disgruntled even though ALL issues were handled to the best of my abilities. As for the cleanup of debris, This too was handled as professionally and timely as possible. I believe there was a tarp left on site along with some scrap asphalt that have gotten buried in the snow by an unforeseen storm which ocurred during the installation period. I, personally, went to the site (after the snow melted) and cleaned up all of this debris and left the homeowners site CLEAN. I can understand the homeowners dismay at pipes freezing, and at the remaining debris in the snowbanks. But I cannot understand their lack of understanding in regards to shared responsibility in communicating about the "heated" garage and their insinuation of "stupidity" on our part. I wish them the best with their new roof (as they stated, it is a pretty good job), and I will remain prudent in standing behind all of the work that me and my crew perform. Sincerely, Tom Mullen, President Black Ox Roofing, Inc.

I spent $6427 on that work. The work they did turned to be great. I decided to use them because they came in at half the price. I would recommend them to others as a good roofing company. They were definitely fast in having the work completed and they were in and out quickly. The only down side of them was that they did take a while to actually get here because of the bad weather and things like that, but they were transparent about it so it did not bother me much. I was actually really impressed with the price.

They were going to work for us this past week, but delayed, as they are behind schedule. There was a lot of rain earlier this month. Their prices seem to be very fair. I have not actually met the owner, Tom; I have only spoken to him over the phone. It took quite a while for him to get back to me after the initial contact, being their busy time of year, but I have mostly a favorable impression. I am nervous because I don?t know the company at all, and selected them based on Angie's list ratings and a price quote that was much cheaper than two others I received. The price they quoted me was about $5000, but they did not think it was necessary to remove the existing roof. They are going to do it, at my request, for another $1800, plus the dumpster.

Went extremely well. Tom cam out, inspected the roof, and gave an estimate during that first visit. We later contacted him and set up a date to put on the new roof. His two-person crew came out the week he stated and in two days the job was completed. The workers were extremely nice and professional. The roof looks great and at a great price.
Description of Work: A tin/metal roof was put over our aging shingles.
