+ -1 moreProvider did good work but was asking for money upfront and stating it was needed because someone didn't pay him for lumber on another job. He would disappear for a few weeks after taking my funds and told me his workers do not want to work so would bring his girlfriend to help. I honestly thought he would not complete the work but came he back and completed as I was going to report him as a contractor not work with. He did take time to remove each fixture and shutter and sand metal before spray painting. He then left things on site after completing job and disconnected his cell phone after picking the stuff up.
Description of Work: Paint exterior woodwork on house, garage door and remove metal lighting fixtures and shutters to paint.

+ -1 more8Ernie claimed to have a crew but showed up with only his girlfriend stating that workers find it easier to collect assistance than continue working. It was 50% down and then wanted more money claiming he used my downpayment to buy lumber for another customer. He then showed up with just his girlfriend and luckily both could handle ladders well. They would ask for a few hundred more dollars and then disappear for a few weeks claiming family sickness or vacation. He did do a good job with the metal fixtures taking the time to ensure sanded and did an even spray job covering the vegetation around. The painting was acceptable and used good quality paint and made sure I had the colors to match. This job took over two months to complete partly because of the rain but then them disappearing on me. I laughed when they claimed they would come back. But I left for the weekend and they came back to complete the job. He also helped me with grinding out a tree stump and finding a replacement screen door. Very helpful and careful when he was with it but definitely had issues and then changed his number after finishing as I had one small adjustment. I was also overcharged not having a lot of experience hiring someone.
Description of Work: Paint trim on the house and removed, sanded and spray painted metal lighting pictures. Removed shutters and spray painted on a two-story colonial.

Description of Work: I hired this person in 2000 after my husband died and needed to add an apartment onto my home. He came over, gave me an estimate, showed me pictures of things he had done etc. I had to give him 50% up front (I had never done anything like this on my own and did not realize that people would really take you for a ride). He was never one time, sometimes did not come and occasionally said he could not come because he had noone to take care of his child. After not being there for several days I told him bring the child over and I would take care of him. He did not have the appropriate tools to do the job, he would buy the material and say he needed more money and I would notice after I gave him the money he had a new tool. I finally fired him, brought him to Small Claims Court and he paid nothing out of the deal, noone could find him and now I notice he is around again. Advice--DO NOT HIRE THIS PERSON HE IS A TOTAL RIPOFF AND KNOW NOTHING ABOUT BUILDING, I CALLED HIS REFERENCES AFTER (YES AFTER) AND THEY LAUGHTED AND SAID HE NEVER BUILT ANYTHING FOR US AND IS NOT CAPABLE OF DOING THAT. HE TOOK ME FOR $10,000, I HAD TO HIRE SOMEONE ELSE TO FINISH THE JOB. I WOULD NEVER LET ANYONE DO THAT TO ME AGAIN WITHOUT GETTING VERY GOOD REFERENCES AND AM HOPING ANGIE'S LIST WILL DO THAT. THANK YOU. DO NOT HIRE HIM EVER, HE IS ALSO DOING DRUGS, HIS NAME HAS BEEN IN THE PAPER LATE LY.

+ 0 moreErnie estimated that only 20 slate pieces needed replacing. He wrote an estimate that would not go over $1500. I gave a $500 deposit. At the end of the day he calls me up and tells me the final bill was $1720. He left a dirty rag and a Budweiser cup on our property. He offered to replace another portion of our roof for only $1000.
Description of Work: They replaced 47 slate pieces, 23 bibbing and applied 2 coats of alumninum paint to the valleys and roof edge.
