Porter & sons are the real deal; honest, skillful, and with great professionalism and pride in their work. They are a pleasure to work with, and we love all the work they've done on our home. They take pride in their work, and are honest.
Description of Work: We did a substantial addition to our home (1992), then a kitchen renovation (2011), and finally a barn renovation for a wedding (2015).

My wife and I recently completed a sizable addition to our home after having received bids from three, well established local contractors. G R Porter & Sons was in on the bidding process and while their pricing came in competitive with the other two contractors we felt their level of commitment to customer service somewhat lacking in comparison. Realize we would not characterize their behavior as rude in any respect, it was simply that the other two contractors were a bit more detailed and responsive to our follow up questions and concerns.
Description of Work: Received a bid for work on an addition to an existing home. Prior to completion of the bid we discussed the building process, design options, pricing structure, and time lines.

We are very happy with them. We put the job out to bid, to about five companies. And we interviewed. It was a combination or bid and interview. We liked them personally. I mean, we liked them from there interview. And their price was competitive.
Description of Work: They carried out a renovation addition based on the architects plans. They supervised all subcontractors. They organized and supervised subcontracting. And built and addition on our house.

Let me start with the positive. Overall, Tim & Tom Porter are honest and mean well. From the minute they were hired, everything started to go wrong. Not a single aspect of this construction job went as planned, due in no small part to the total and complete disorganization of Tom Porter, his foreman Kevin and the subs. On two occasions, I saw Tom with a clipboard-that's it. Never saw the foreman with a list, action items, nothing! The Porters went out of their way to hire the CHEAPEST/ WORST subs you could ever imagine- see details below. -They poured the foundation wrong and had to fix that- and the framing mistake that went along with it. -Then they framed the kitchen window incorrectly. My husband caught that error. - Plumber- Nick Piper- was a TOTAL disaster. Not a single thing he installed worked correctly. Dishwasher, steamer, on-demand hot water heaters, venting to the outside, master shower install, master tub install, broken sinks, etc.etc. We didn't have continuous running hot water for 9 months! He plumbed the shower incorrectly until my husband caught it- right before the tile was going to go in. Also, we had a flood early on b/c Nick didn't install the tub correctly. He "forgot" to caulk. - Shower door installed incorrectly. -Tile/ grout problems everywhere. -Drywall/tape peeling/cracking all over the place. House wasn't dried in properly. -Painter- George Hadlock- was the worst! They failed to tape off anything and, as such, it looks extremely sloppy. No clean lines anywhere :( George had a temper tantrum on the job and I was on the receiving end. He was subsequently asked NOT to return to the site. -They ordered and installed the wrong interior doors throughout the house. Lucky we caught that one early, too. -We had radiant in-floor heat installed throughout the house. For some reason, heat wasn't run under the floor of both closets. In both bedrooms, they are freezing in the winter. -They accepted delivery for damaged appliances. -We had a wet basement half a dozen times. They couldn't figure out the problem for ages- until we discovered water pouring in from the electrical line (from the outside). I could go on and on but these are the highlights. Because the Porters rely on a "handshake" to manage their subs/ sub estimates, many subs went over their original bid. The Porters were kind enough to come back to us and ask us for more money despite our contract, making us look like the bad guys in the eyes of the subs. Every time we attempted to bring errors (ordering, shipment, foreman, etc) to their attention, we were treated as hysterical customers who've never built before. We were expected to let the "professionals" run the show. Because they dismissed our concerns, mistakes continued well past when they should have been fixed. It all comes down to supervision. I was told outright that the Porters thought their "job" was to manage the money and let the subs do their job. That, in essence, is the crux of the problem. If the Porters instead chose to manage and supervise the subs, many of these problems never would have occurred. Instead of being proactive and managing the schedule, they let things go wrong and tried to react as best they could. There were two bright spots- Larry Godfrey (excavation) and Mike Mann (electrical). Tom was on vacation every 5 minutes. Tim & Tom don't communicate so as the client you're stuck in the middle of their communication gaps. Put everything in writing!
Description of Work: The Porters built our home, from start to (interminable) finish.

It took them a long time to get a fixed start date, but once they began the workman were pleasant and very accommodating. The finish work was excellent took a little over three months. Problem was at the end they seemed to go off and start other jobs leaving us close but not quite done. When done they came back to make sure all was well and fix the one or two minor things that needed attention.
Description of Work: We had an entire kitchen torn out-no walls moved. New from ceiling down to new floors and reposition refrigerator, freezer, and microwave. Contractor worked with kitchen designer to redo the room.
