Eric came out, assessed the job, and gave a quote. He gave us a reference, which we checked, and it was quite good. He arrived on time every day, and cleaned up every afternoon. He had all the necessary tools, equipment, and supplies for the job. He prepped the job thoroughly, including taping off edges and putting up plastic to contain dust (he also used a dust-containment attachment on his sander). He has a limited range of stains (Minwax brand), but that's understandable because ours is a small market in a remote region. He put down three stain samples, gave us adequate time to choose one, didn't rush, and was extremely helpful in discussing our options. He seemed to have a very good knowledge of basic techniques and materials. He stuck to the schedule and finished the job on time. The bill came out to be exactly what he bid, with no surprises, and no added fees. One small note of advice: I wish Eric had told us that the pre-existing nail holes, staple holes, and gouges (both the ones he filled and the ones already filled) would show up black after finishing the stairs. This is mainly due to natural tannins in red oak, though possibly amplified by wiping the stain off prematurely (rather than diluting it per instructions) to keep a light tone. If we'd known, we'd have tried to treat them beforehand, left them unfilled, or at least would have chosen a darker stain. If you have red oak, this is definitely something to read/ask about or at least experiment with, before choosing a stain. This staining only occurred on the red oak, not the white. Eric did a fine job with the floors. They look great, and I'm confident they were finished correctly. Furthermore, he was polite, honest, and treated our home respectfully. He was also willing to share some of his knowledge with us, which will help us as we continue renovations on our home. Eric's price isn't "cheap" but it's a good price for high quality work, and was comparable to another bid we received. I would definitely hire Eric again, and I definitely recommend him to anyone who needs to have an existing floor finished or refinished.
Description of Work: The job was small: Sand and refinish an existing red oak staircase (12 treads), and sand/finish a newly-installed white oak entry (about 50 square feet).
