I definitely do NOT recommend using Hercules for any project and have not given bad reviews in the past. This one warrants it. They installed a 6 foot privacy fence for us. The installation was slow to start and then quickly finished in the rain. The fence looked good initially. After just a couple of weeks the pressure treated pine boards started to warp both vertically and horizontally. They started to split also. Some of the many knots started to come lose. The worst part is the gaps that continue to grow between the boards. In some cases it is almost 2 inches. The company is slow to respond to calls or emails to get someone to come look at it. After many unanswered requests they finally sent someone to look at it. They replaced a few boards and claimed it was normal for a #2 fence board to do this. They said we should have paid for a higher grade board if we wanted it to look better. After many months of back and forth with various visits all they will do is replace some of the boards. Of course even for that there were times they didn’t show up. We will now hire another company to do it correctly.

the day they were supposed to start, i get a email from the owner at 6:58am saying that it wouldn't be until the following week that they would start.. ok, cool... then when they do show up it took a full 5 days for them to put up a fence just in my backyard.. every time i looked out the window the workers were sitting out front on a smoke break... by the 4th day i called the owner and asked could he send another crew.. he said he would.. the last day the same crew showed up and finished.. less than 3 months of them completing the job, different parts of the fence were coming down, both gates were broken.. they were the highest quote i got but went with them cause of the transitional panels they offered.. I wouldn't recommend them to my worst enemy.. wish i went with a cheaper quote and probably my fence would be in tact with just 3 months after spending almost 10k

They did an outstanding job installing the fence. There were only two men and they worked through the rain, heat, and humidity, late into the day until the job was completed. A+ to those workmen. The only, and I want to make it clear, the ONLY problem we had was a lack of communication between us and the GM. It did cause an issue for us that resulted in lost wages and a wasted day for us. The workmanship so far has is beautiful, we love the fence, they were the most reasonable bidder, we had 4, and they supplied us with a quality product that the others could not. Very happy with Hercules Fence.

Horrible communication, unprofessional, slow, poor craftsmanship and dealing with the manager was terrible. Contract was signed on August 6th, work was not completed until September 10th. My husband expressed the fact that he had to report for school in Alabama on the 11th of September, Matt, the sales rep, assured him that the fence would be completed by then. August was a very rainy month and once again my husband talked to Matt about being in school during the installation and his concerns, Matt assured him that he would be involved throughout the installation process, every step of the way. Matt did not come back to our house, nor did he call once the contract was signed. So much for staying involved... I understand you cannot pour concrete in the rain, but when they finally did show up, they were unorganized, would disappear for hours and took their time. The work began on the 4th of September and they "finished" on the 10th of September. We were told it would take 4 days, maximum. On the 3rd day, they had to leave early because of a storm, the installer told me that they would stay late the next day or come on Saturday, either way, he assured me that the fence would be done by Saturday the 8th. At the end of the 4th day, it was a Friday and they weren't even 1/2 way done. The installer came to the door and said they would not be out on Saturday, they would be back on Monday, then he turned around and left. I called the office and was told to speak to Matt, he was the sales rep. I explained that I was upset, it was taking a long time and the installer had told me they would finish it by Saturday. Matt told me that he had spoken to the installer before returning my call and that he wouldn't have said that because we don't work on weekends. Matt also stated that the installer claimed they only had a couple of hours of work left. (Keep in mind they weren't even half way done) He then made excuses about being behind schedule and that this is normal. He said he would send an extra guy out with them on Monday, for a total of 3, and they would finish it then. I told him I was not happy about it. After they left on Monday the 10th, (They didn't say anything, just left, no walk through, no goodbye, nothing) I called the manager, Bill Underwood, to express my frustration over the length of time it had taken and the quality of the installation, there were many issues that had to be dealt with. Mr. Underwood blamed it on the rain, being behind schedule and then blamed it on us. He claimed it was because we chose to wait until after the holiday weekend (Labor Day) to have the original fence taken out, that it took so long. I was appalled! It was his crew who suggested that we leave it in, since we have a large dog and it would be 4 days before they got started, and assured us it was no problem and would not slow them down to take it out on the day that they planned to set the posts. Mr. Underwood claims we misunderstood them. He then assured me he would come out and take a look and "make things right" he was going to talk to his crew and call me back... This was on the 10th of September. I then walked the fence line and took pictures of the problems that needed to be fixed. *The gate was sagging, it wouldn't even close!! *I had expressed to the installer my concern about the gap at the bottom of the fence, I did not want anything coming into my yard, nor my pets getting out and there were a few places that had alot of space between the ground and the fence, he told me "don't worry about it, I will fill that in" he did not. *There were many pickets that had staples sticking out of them. *Some pickets were 4-6" too short. *There were so many nails that had not made contact with the intended picket and were just sticking out. *There were several damaged pickets. *One of the gates was missing a picket. *The bolts in the fence brackets were all in crooked, causing splitting. *One bolt wasn't even making contact with the post. *Our contract said 6" pickets, they used 3.5" pickets. I am a busy person, wife of an active duty Soldier, mom of 3 boys, household of 3 pets & very active volunteer. We had moved into the house 5 days before we signed the contract on the fence, so I had my hands full. I tied up the gate, resumed life and expected to hear from Bill. On October 10th, after a 15 hour drive to Alabama, I got a phone call about payment on the fence (it was not going to be paid for in full, until the work was completed to my satisfaction) I explained that I was still waiting to hear from Bill. Tammy said she would send the crew over to my house right away to fix it, I told her absolutely not, I am not there and I do not want them to let my dog out. I hung up the phone, within minutes, Bill called me back. He claimed he was not familiar with the job and does not remember speaking to me. Again, he said the crew was on their way to my house, again, I told them NO. I am 4 states away! I told him that my husband and I plan to be in his office the morning of the 12th and I will show him the pictures. He said there is no reason for us to come to the office and asked what time he should meet us at the house. He said that he and a specialist would meet us that afternoon... The same guy that installed the fence, showed up, no Bill... We called him and asked why he was not there, he said we misunderstood him. He was too busy to come out to our house. I cannot remember the name of the installer. He apologized, said he did not know there were any problems and that he would fix them that day. He spent about 4 hours repairing the gates and the fence. The gate still doesn't close properly. The following week Bill just showed up one day to take a look at it. He apologized for any misunderstanding and acted like a politician, he told us that he would speak with Tammy & Matt and they would agree on a percentage to take off of the total cost of the fence. He would call us on Monday the 15th of October to let us know what that percentage off would be. On November 6th, again we got a call about payment. We explained to Tammy that we were waiting to hear what the total would be with the discount. She explained that they had decided to give us a $150 gift card to Lowes. What an insult!! On the 12th my husband spoke with Bill and explained that the lack of communication and follow through has been very frustrating, he then requested a 5% discount. Bill declined and gave us $150 off the fence. That is 3% of the cost of the fence, what a joke. My husband then reminded him of a comment that he made about how negative news travels like wildfire, while you don't really hear about positive news. He then expressed how we would be sharing our experience with Hercules Fence Company. Bill then told him "if that's how you feel about it, go ahead"

The two-man crew arrived a few days after I gave the go-ahead (a patio had to be completed first) and the weather had cleared (that took a week). The first day of work was to remove the old fence, the second day to mark out the new fence lines and to sink the new posts with concrete bases. (Some of the old fence posts were just in the ground with no concrete.) The third day was spent installing the fence and clearing up the debris. The work was done to a high standard -- the posts were plumb and in line, the fence pickets were trimmed to the ground clearance I wanted and straight, the lattice work was done well and everything was square and level. The only quibbles I had were about the gate: first, it was not exactly where I wanted it, but that was due to my not specifying it clearly enough. My drawing for the fence did not show the gate, and my on-site instruction was unclear. Second, the gate did not lock from the inside of the fence, a requirement I assumed would be met. When I let the salesperson know about the lock, a bolt was installed on the inside the next morning. All told, I am very satisfied with the result.
Description of Work: The job was to remove an old wooden fence (about 20 years old) that was partly outside the lot lines and had been repaired in amateurish fashion by previous owners. The new fence was to be in the same style as the previous fence (as required by the homeowners' association), and inside the lot lines. The old fence was to be removed and hauled away, along with any other job-related debris. The fence was 6 feet high: a 5-foot privacy fence with a one-foot lattice top, made of pressure-treated pine. Total length was 66 feet, including a 4-foot gate. The gate was provided with a latch.

I believe we hired them because of the price they quoted, but they also did the work very well, and finished the project in a short time. They were very professional and punctual everyday. We would consider this company for future projects.

In March 2008 we had our fence installed. Four months later a section of our fence fell down in the middle of the night and another section, a horizontal board was splitting in the middle, leading to another section that could eventually fall. Never a good situation when you have two dogs. Upon calling the company several times, we could not get the District Manager or Residential Manager to return our calls and when we did talk to the receptionist she was always incrediably rude, everytime. After two weeks with part of our fence missing the company finally came out only to question me again and then to tell me that he put the fence up himself and how he just could not believe that this could happen. "It did" I said," and now please fix it." The company started out good in the beginning, but once there was a problem the professionalism lacked greatly.

We actually had a contract with another company for this job, but they wanted to charge us an arm and a leg to take our old fence down. When we told this to Hercules, they said they would do it for free. They just seemed to be more customer service oriented and definitely treated us better. It took a total of two days to do it and the job was done very well. We are glad we ended up calling them.

Hercules has an excellent reputation, but we still shopped around before going with them on this project. Their prices were competitive and the service was phenomenal. They arrived on time, behaved well and had the whole fence built in one and a half days. It gives us added security, and looks great while doing it. They did a marvelous job building the fence.
